Classifying Heterogeneous Cooperation In Social Dilemmas: Experimental Evidence And Simulation Insights, Sining Wang
Classifying Heterogeneous Cooperation In Social Dilemmas: Experimental Evidence And Simulation Insights, Sining Wang
Faculty Scholarship
In this paper, we introduce a revealed strategy method to capture heterogeneous behavioral patterns in repeated public goods experiments. This method identifies an individual’s strategic type—a stable decision-making tendency in interactive settings—by analyzing behavioral profiles. We conduct a repeated public goods game to collect participants’ behavioral data and then apply both k-medians and hierarchical clustering algorithms to classify them into five distinctive types: free riders, strong cooperators, above-average conditional cooperators, below-average conditional cooperators, and hump-shaped players. These classifications are then used to construct and calibrate an agent-based simulation model. Our simulation results suggest that policies targeting how conditional cooperators respond …

“I Have Never Enjoyed Writing…” Exploring Pre-Service Teachers’ Divergent Perspectives And Responding To Student Writing, Nicole M. Martin, Lisa K. Hawkins, Jennifer Cooper Mrs.
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
Understanding of pre-service teachers’ [PSTs’] growth in practice is foundational to making the most of available opportunities in writing teacher preparation programs. We sought to examine differences in PSTs’ changes in reading and responding to student writing when their perspectives diverge from each other. Three PSTs enrolled in one learning-to-teach-writing course participated. Our comparisons of PSTs’ initial and end-of-semester reading and responding revealed varied changes within their core practice. PSTs’ variations displayed alignment to their divergent writing attitudes and beliefs. The results highlight the need for more nuanced attention to PSTs' growth in practice in future writing teacher preparation coursework.

Numerical Simulation Of The Pitting Corrosion Behavior Of Stainless Steel Bellows Influenced By Varying Liquid Film Thicknesses, Lu-Jun Ren, Guo-Min Li, Zhen-Xiao Zhu, Hai-Yan Xiong, Bing Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
To advance the understanding of the corrosion behavior of stainless steel bellows in marine atmospheric environments and enhance the precision of service life predictions, this study employs finite element simulations to investigate the pitting corrosion rates and pit morphologies of bellows peaks and troughs under varying electrolyte film thicknesses. The model incorporates localized electrochemical reactions, oxygen concentration, and homogeneous solution reactions. For improved computational accuracy, the fitted polarization curve data were directly applied as nonlinear boundary conditions on the electrode surface via interpolation functions. Simulation results reveal that the peak regions exhibit faster corrosion rates than the trough regions. With …

The Nature Of Anthropogenically Driven River Drying: Spatiotemporal Causes And Consequences, Eliza Inez Gilbert
The Nature Of Anthropogenically Driven River Drying: Spatiotemporal Causes And Consequences, Eliza Inez Gilbert
Biology ETDs
Streambed drying naturally occurs in over 60% of rivers and streams worldwide. Climate change and human regulation of surface and groundwater have increased drying in naturally intermittent systems and caused perennial systems to transition to intermittency, impacting water security, water quality, and biodiversity. To understand human-induced drying dynamics, we used 12 years of daily drying data along a 154-km regulated reach of the Rio Grande. We conceptualized river drying as a regime analogous to the natural flow regime paradigm and quantified drying magnitude, rate of change, and duration. Although linear models predicting drying magnitude and rate of change were uninterpretable, …
Logic Enriched Over A Quantale, Alexander Kurz
Logic Enriched Over A Quantale, Alexander Kurz
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Many-valued logics have a long history in mathematical logic as well as in applications to the semantics of programming languages and to engineering more generally. Typically these logics are rich with features motivated by the particular applications they stem from. In his 1973 article "Metric Spaces, Generalized Logic, and Closed Categories", Lawvere argued that any quantale Ω gives rise to a generalized Ω-valued logic that has as its models the categories enriched over the quantale. This suggests developing a uniform framework for many-valued logics parameterized in a quantale. In this talk we will review some previous and ongoing work in …

Research Progress On Thermal Management Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Hong-Da Li, Qiu-Wan Shen, Zhao-Yang Zhang, Xin-Yue Zhao, Yuan Wei, Shi-An Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Nowadays, new energy technologies are developing rapidly, energy storage systems are widely used, and lithium-ion batteries occupy a dominant position among them. Therefore, it is also very important to ensure their performance, safety and service life through thermal management technology. In this paper, the causes of thermal runaway of lithium batteries are reviewed firstly, and three commonly used thermal management technologies, namely, air cooling, liquid cooling and phase change material cooling, are compared according to relevant literature in recent years. Air cooling technology has been widely studied because of its simple structure and low cost, but its temperature control effect …
Optimization And Model Averaging Of Histogram-Based Place Cell Firing Rate Maps Using The Point Process Framework, Murat Okatan
Optimization And Model Averaging Of Histogram-Based Place Cell Firing Rate Maps Using The Point Process Framework, Murat Okatan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The firing rate of hippocampal place cells depends on the spatial position of the organism in an environment. This position dependence is often quantified by constructing spike-in-location and time-in-location histograms, the ratio of which yields a firing rate map. The purpose of this study is to present a new method for optimizing the spatial resolution of histogram-based firing rate maps. It is pointed out that histogram-based firing rate maps are conditional intensity functions of inhomogeneous Poisson process models of neural spike trains, and, as such, they can be optimized through model selection within the point process framework. The point process …

Isar Imaging Of Drone Swarms At 77 Ghz, Remzi̇ye Büşra Çoruk, Ali̇ Kara, Eli̇f Aydin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The proliferation of easily available, internet-purchased drones, coupled with the emergence of coordinated drone swarms, poses a significant security threat for airspace. Detecting these swarms is crucial to prevent potential accidents, criminal misuse, and airspace disruptions. This paper proposes a novel inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging technique for high-resolution reconstruction of drone swarms at 77 GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency, offering a valuable tool for military and defense anti-drone systems. The key parameters affecting down-range and cross-range resolution (0.05 m), ultimately enabling the generation of detailed ISAR images are discussed. Here, we create diverse scenarios encompassing various swarm formations, …
Adaptive Backstepping Control With Real-Time Fuzzy Logic Parameter Selection Of A Field- Oriented Control-Based Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Driver, Fati̇h Bayir, Erkan Zergeroğlu
Adaptive Backstepping Control With Real-Time Fuzzy Logic Parameter Selection Of A Field- Oriented Control-Based Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Driver, Fati̇h Bayir, Erkan Zergeroğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This study proposes an adaptive backstepping control approach integrated with a real-time fuzzy logic parameter selection algorithm to enhance the robustness and stability of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) controller under parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. Although backstepping control performs well under varying disturbances, it must be supported by an adaptive control algorithm to effectively handle both variable disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Moreover, because the fixed parameters of the adaptive backstepping controller limit the dynamic performance of the velocity tracking loop, this study incorporates fuzzy logic control—a soft computing algorithm capable of real-time parameter adjustment—to achieve more robust outcomes. …

Excitation Of Synchronous Machine By Contactless Power Transfer - Review From The Perspective Of Electric Vehicles, Erhan Tuncel, Emi̇n Yildiriz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Electrically excited synchronous machines (EESMs) are one of the best choices for propulsion motor appli cation in electric vehicles (EVs) due to their wide torque-speed characteristics. Moreover, the air gap flux density can be easily controlled by varying the excitation current. Despite these advantages, it is difficult to transfer the current required by the rotating excitation winding into the motor under conventional methods, so it is not widely used in EVs. In this study, the emerging literature on contactless power transfer methods is reviewed for applicability to an EESM that can operate as an EV propulsion motor. Design criteria such …

Rescon: Residual Consistency For Real-World Super-Resolution, Erdi̇ Saritaş, Hazim Kemal Ekenel
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Real-world super-resolution is a highly challenging problem in the field of computer vision. Besides enhancing image resolution and improving visual details, information loss due to complex real-world degradations is desired to be restored. One of the primary hardness of this problem is finding sufficiently large paired datasets for training. Researchers have developed techniques that generate synthetic low-resolution pairs using high-resolution images with a generative adversarial network-based degradation generator to address this issue. In these approaches, the degradation generator is trained by utilizing real-world low-resolution images as the target domain, generating a degraded low-resolution counterpart of the high-resolution input. However, in …

High Spatial Resolution Crop Type And Land Use Land Cover Classification Without Labels: A Framework Using Multi-Temporal Planetscope Images And Variational Bayesian Gaussian Mixture Model, Minh Tri Le
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Previous studies often combined high spatial resolution data (e.g., PlanetScope) with wider spectral range data (e.g., Sentinel-2) and relied on supervised classification methods to produce land use and land cover (LULC) maps. This study proposed a new unsupervised framework to generate crop type and LULC maps at high spatial resolution (< 5 m) using available PlanetScope data solely without requiring ground truths. We used PlanetScope surface reflectance images and their derived spectral indices during growing seasons to create multi-temporal input features, which were fed into an unsupervised Variational Bayesian Gaussian Mixture Model (VBGMM). The VBGMM, unlike the traditional unsupervised classification methods, (1) first estimated optimal parameters that are most suitable based on the input features and then (2) assigned pixels to the cluster with maximum posteriori probability of a mixture of several Gaussian distributions. The crop type and LULC maps were then generated by labeling the derived clusters using the best possible assignment method, referring to the existing crop type or LULC products. We evaluated the produced PlanetScope-based crop type and LULC maps using true labels, corresponding reference maps, and other unsupervised classification methods. The results demonstrated the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed framework in mapping crop types and LULC at 3–5 m pixels across various ecosystems, climate zones, and human-managed landscapes. The spatial patterns of PlanetScope-based maps were (1) highly comparable with all the reference datasets at 10–30 m spatial resolution and (2) better than the traditional GMM and K-means clustering methods. The VBGMM produced classification maps with high confidence, yielding class probabilities above 0.9 for over 90 % of all study areas. The area percentage for all crop type and LULC classes agreed well with their reference maps, with R2 of 0.95 and RMSE of 1.04 %. The confusion matrices using true labels indicated that PlanetScope-based maps achieved a higher overall accuracy of 84 % than the supervised referenced maps of 81 %. Besides, the entropy comparison showed that our framework-based maps were better at capturing fine-scale features such as developed areas within cities that commonly mix with open space and vegetation, deforestation and cropland conversion in South America, smallholder croplands in Africa and Asia, and generating homogeneous crop fields in North America. This study further highlighted the potential for future research to implement our proposed framework to generate timely and extensive annotated datasets, which can be used for operationally training machine learning models to map crop types and LULC, track deforestation, detect wildfires, and delineate flooded areas at larger scales using medium/coarse Earth observations.

Ionic Liquid Enhanced Proton Transfer For Neutral Oxygen Evolution Reaction, Ming-Xing Chen, Nian Liu, Zi-He Dua, Jing Qi, Rui Cao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The development of highly active catalyst in pH-neutral media for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical in the field of renewable energy storage and conversion. Nevertheless, the slow kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) hinders the overall OER efficiency. Herein, we report an ionic liquid (IL) modified CoSn(OH)6 nanocubes (denoted as CoSn(OH)6-IL), which could be prepared through a facile strategy. The modified IL would not change the structural characteristics of CoSn(OH)6, but could effectively regulate the local proton activity near the active sites. The CoSn(OH)6-IL exhibited higher intrinsic OER performances than the pristine …
