Early Theories On Fluid Resistance And Translation Of Euler’S “Dilucidationes De Resistentia Fluidorum”, Sylvio R. Bistafa Sep 2025

Early Theories On Fluid Resistance And Translation Of Euler’S “Dilucidationes De Resistentia Fluidorum”, Sylvio R. Bistafa

Euleriana

In 1763, Euler published Dilucidationes de resistentia fluidorum (Explanations on the resistance of fluids), a memoir that challenges the fluid resistance theories proposed by Isaac Newton and d’Alembert. Euler's work explores the resistance experienced by solid bodies moving through fluids, critiquing both Newton's "common rule" and d’Alembert's paradox, which predicted zero resistance for non-viscous fluids. Euler's treatise is divided into two parts: the first focuses on the mathematical modeling of fluid flow patterns, while the second addresses the calculation of fluid resistance on surfaces. Despite significant advancements, Euler's work remains constrained by the limitations of non-viscous fluid assumptions, ultimately grappling …

Assistance For The Calculation Of Sines (Translation Of E246), Julian Schennach Sep 2025

Assistance For The Calculation Of Sines (Translation Of E246), Julian Schennach

Euleriana

Paralleling his famous relation eiφ = cos(φ) + i sin(φ), Euler establishes the equality (cos φ + i sin φ)n = (cos nφ + i sin nφ). He uses it to comprehensively derive trigonometric identities that convert arbitrary powers of sines and cosines of an angle (and products thereof) into sums of sines and cosines of multiples of that angle. Some negative and fractional powers are shown to yield infinite series. Euler further describes a general method to evaluate various infinite series involving weighted trigonometric functions. These results foreshadow Fourier series. As Euler points out, the scope of …

On Amicable Numbers, Jonathan David Evans

Euleriana

This is an English translation of Euler's 1750 paper "De numeris amicabilibus" (E152), the most substantial of his three works with this name. In it, he expounds at great length the ad hoc methods he has developed to search for pairs of amicable numbers, concluding with a list of around 60 new pairs.

Daniel Bernoulli's "Observations Concerning Recurrent Series", Stacy Langton

Euleriana

Daniel Bernoulli’s article "Observations concerning Recurrrent Series" is one of the gems of the mathematical literature. It describes a numerical method for solving polynomial equations. This method, now known as “Bernoulli’s method”, is still in use today. The basis of the method is the study of certain sequences of numbers that satisfy what we now call linear recurrence relations. Bernoulli’s article shows how to find solutions of these recurrence relations. A nice application is a now well-known formula for the Fibonacci numbers. Bernoulli also uses his theory of recurrence relations to give a proof of an early form of De …

Ada-Application Of Decision Analysis For Developing A Healthcare System To Predict Fetal Health, Melfi Alrasheedi, Theyazn.H.H Aldhyani

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

A fatal health condition involves an unborn baby that persists throughout the embryonic stage until delivery. The fetus grows and develops during each trimester of pregnancy. Obstetricians may detect fetal anomalies and select medical interventions based on cardiotocogram (CTG) data. However, the obstetrician's visual assessment of CTG data can sometimes be subjective or inaccurate. Therefore, automated analysis using machine learning approaches for CTG data is essential. This research employs decision analysis techniques, including decision trees (DT), gradient boosting (GB), and type-2 fuzzy neural networks (FNN), for prenatal analysis and prediction. The system was tested using a standard dataset consisting of …

Retracted: Hotspot Issue Handling And Reliable Data Forwarding Technique For Ocean Underwater Sensor Networks, Omar Adil Mahdi, Yusor Rafid Bahar Al-Mayouf, Sameer Sami Hassan Al-Obaidi, Bourair Al-Attar, Hamed Balogun, Suleman Khan

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) have emerged as a promising technology for a wide range of ocean monitoring applications. The UWSNs suffer from unique challenges of the underwater environment, such as dynamic and sparse network topology, which can easily lead to a partitioned network. This results in hotspot formation and the absence of the routing path from the source to the destination. Therefore, to optimize the network lifetime and limit the possibility of hotspot formation along the data transmission path, the need to plan a traffic-aware protocol is raised. In this research, we propose a traffic-aware routing protocol called PG-RES, …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Air pollution is a significant public health issue that impacts lung health, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Both natural and anthropogenic sources of air pollution give rise to a variety of toxic compounds, including particulate matter (PM), ozone (O₃), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to these pollutants is strongly associated with the development and exacerbation of respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Notably, early life exposure to pollutants such as …

Progress Towards Confinement Of An Ultracold Neutral Plasma With Electric And Magnetic Fields, Ben Farley Sep 2025

Progress Towards Confinement Of An Ultracold Neutral Plasma With Electric And Magnetic Fields, Ben Farley

Theses and Dissertations

Ultracold neutral plasmas represent a regime of plasmas that is not entirely described by theory, but is critical to our understanding of many phenomena. Though their low temperature makes observing them more manageable, even "confined" ultracold plasmas do not remain contained for more than a few hundred microseconds. No steady state or long-term confinement of an ultracold plasma created by pulse ionization has ever been demonstrated. In this thesis, the construction of a Penning trap for calcium ultracold neutral plasma is presented. The trap consists of a uniform magnetic field to trap the electrons radially and a quadrupole electric field …

Building Multimodal Knowledge Graphs: Automation For Enterprise Integration, Ritvik Garimella, Hong Yung Yip, Revathy Venkataramanan, Amit P. Sheth

Publications

As enterprises increasingly aim to incorporate artificial intelligence into their workflows to tackle complex, multimodal tasks, the demand for intelligent, robust, and trustworthy systems is paramount. While multimodal large language models offer initial capabilities for processing diverse data streams, their dependence on embedding-based representations limit their effectiveness in delivering semantically grounded explanations and reasoning, as well as qualities essential for enterprise-grade applications. Neurosymbolic approaches provide a promising alternative by enabling traceable, context-aware decision making. However, constructing enterprise-level multimodal knowledge graphs (MMKGs) that enable neurosymbolic approaches remains largely impractical. Although prior efforts have explored MMKG construction, they fall short in addressing …

Evidence links air pollution to dementia, yet its role in Lewy body dementia (LBD) remains unclear. Here we showed in a cohort of 56.5 million individuals across the U.S. that PM2.5 exposure raises LBD risk. Mechanistically, we found PM2.5 exposure led to brain atrophy in wild-type mice, an effect not seen in α-synuclein (αSyn)-deficient mice. PM2.5 exposure generated a highly pathogenic αSyn strain, PM-PFF, with enhanced proteinase K-resistance and neurotoxicity, resembling αSyn LBD strains. PM2.5 samples from China, the U.S., and Europe consistently induced proteinase-resistant αSyn strains and in vivo pathology. Transcriptomic analyses revealed shared responses between PM2.5-exposed mice and …

Perspectives On Mathematical Modeling Education: Conceptions And Research, Geena Taite, Joseph Dinapoli Sep 2025

Perspectives On Mathematical Modeling Education: Conceptions And Research, Geena Taite, Joseph Dinapoli

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Mathematical modeling is a cyclical process in which mathematics is used to represent, explore, and better understand real-world situations by mathematizing a problem and validating the results. Unlike traditional word problems, modeling tasks require learners to make assumptions, define quantities, apply mathematics, interpret results, and revise solutions within authentic contexts. Mathematical modeling is increasingly recognized as essential in mathematics education, highlighted in standards such as the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics through mathematical practice 4 (MP4): model with mathematics. This entry explores the evolving landscape of mathematical modeling education. First, it reviews the diverse conceptions of modeling and the …

The Causal Pivot: A Structural Approach To Genetic Heterogeneity And Variant Discovery In Complex Diseases, Chad A Shaw, C J Williams, Taotao Tan, Daniel Illera, Nicholas Di, Joshua M Shulman, John W Belmont

Center on Aging Staff Publications

We present the Causal Pivot (CP) as a structural causal model (SCM) for analyzing genetic heterogeneity in complex diseases. The CP leverages an established causal factor or factors to detect the contribution of additional suspected causes. Specifically, polygenic risk scores (PRSs) serve as known causes, while rare variants (RVs) or RV ensembles are evaluated as candidate causes. The CP incorporates outcome-induced association by conditioning on disease status. We derive a conditional maximum-likelihood procedure for binary and quantitative traits and develop the Causal Pivot likelihood ratio test (CP-LRT) to detect causal signals. Through simulations, we demonstrate the CP-LRT’s robust power and …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Effective staff collaboration in schools maximizes educators’ collective capacity, improves educator and student outcomes, and facilitates school-wide improvement efforts. Yet, many school team members struggle to collaborate effectively. Previous studies have demonstrated individual and school-level factors that influence school-based collaborations. This study expands former research by comparing the varying administrative and environmental tools employed by two schools to shape relational networks and foster interpersonal capital. Specifically, this case study explores how school-level factors shape the development of school social networks and staff collaborative behavior. We use comparative case study analysis to explore how differences in individual-level and system-level factors influence …
