Sagebrush, Wildfire, And Homeowners Associations: Climate Adaptation Opportunities In Summit County, Utah, Rebecca Ivans, Kendall Becker, Wesley Crump, J. Bradley Washa, Lewis Kogan, Scott Hotaling Sep 2025

Sagebrush, Wildfire, And Homeowners Associations: Climate Adaptation Opportunities In Summit County, Utah, Rebecca Ivans, Kendall Becker, Wesley Crump, J. Bradley Washa, Lewis Kogan, Scott Hotaling

All Current Publications

Environmental changes and rapidly expanding suburban developments are amplifying wildfire risk in Utah, including in mixed-sagebrush habitats like those in Morgan, Summit, and Wasatch counties along the Wasatch Back. Wildfire risk to people and structures is especially high in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), where homes and buildings intermingle with undeveloped wildlands and natural vegetation that can fuel wildfire. Much of this urban expansion is occurring in the form of large, dispersed developments managed by homeowners associations (HOAs), which often dictate standards for the homes and properties within their purview. Thus, HOAs can play a critical role in supporting wildfire mitigation …

The Next Frontier In The Study Of Noncovalent Bonding: Transition Metals, Steve Scheiner Sep 2025

The Next Frontier In The Study Of Noncovalent Bonding: Transition Metals, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

As work continues unabated in the study of noncovalent bonding, particularly σ-hole bonds, new challenges have emerged as the participation of transition metals in interactions of this sort is fast becoming appreciated. While there are certain similarities with the halogen, chalcogen, etc, bonds, in which the main group elements participate, there are certain unique properties of these metal atoms that must be analyzed before a complete understanding can be attained. As one example, these atoms tend to act simultaneously as both electron donors and acceptors, a synergistic action that amplifies the overall bond strength. Ideas are expressed in this paper …

Measuring Return And Volatility Interactions Across Gcc Equity Indices And Cryptocurrencies, Yasmin Sudan

Theses and Dissertations

This research is examining how volatility travels between major cryptocurrencies and Gulf stock markets. Using daily data for six GCC equity indices (ADX, BAX, DFMGI, KSE, QE, TASI) and five leading cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Dash, Monero) from 2017–2022. Our methodology contains a three-step framework consists of a univariate Garch (1,1) to assess the volatility of each asset. A bivariant BEKK Garch to measure shocks transmission and volatility transmission from cryptocurrencies to Gulf stock market. The last step is using the DCC Garch model to model the time varying correlation. We also split the sample before and after January 2020 …

Spatial Stochastic Frontier Model With Stochastic Weighting Matrix, Ming-Yu Deng, Levent Kutlu Sep 2025

Spatial Stochastic Frontier Model With Stochastic Weighting Matrix, Ming-Yu Deng, Levent Kutlu

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper develops a spatial autoregressive stochastic frontier model that allows the spatial weighting matrix to be stochastic. This approach captures spatial heterogeneity in the interactions among production units and quantifies random spatial dependencies arising from this variability. The model parameters are estimated using a simulated maximum likelihood approach. We propose a method to simulate spillover-corrected direct, indirect, and total efficiency estimates. Additionally, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the finite-sample performance of the proposed model. Finally, an empirical application to the efficiency of Spanish dairy farms is presented to demonstrate the practical implementation of our methodology.

Analytical And Numerical Approaches To Parameter Estimation In Damped Oscillatory Systems, Gracie Crooks, F. Ayça Çetinkaya Sep 2025

Analytical And Numerical Approaches To Parameter Estimation In Damped Oscillatory Systems, Gracie Crooks, F. Ayça Çetinkaya

CODEE Journal

We investigate the inverse problem of identifying damping and stiffness parameters in one-dimensional damped oscillatory systems governed by second-order differential equations. Focusing on mass–spring–damper models, we analyze the qualitative behavior of solutions across underdamped, critically damped, and overdamped regimes, and derive explicit conditions for parameter recovery based on time-domain observations such as equilibrium crossings and turnaround points. Two numerical estimation methods are developed and compared: a finite-difference least-squares approach based on central difference approximations, and a finite element formulation derived from a variational framework using piecewise linear basis functions. Computational experiments using synthetic data assess the accuracy, stability, and noise …

Conducting Inclusion: A Udl-Inspired Approach To Choral Education, Maria Varvarigou Sep 2025

Conducting Inclusion: A Udl-Inspired Approach To Choral Education, Maria Varvarigou

Visions of Research in Music Education

In this paper I explore the possibilities of a Universal Design for Learning (UDL)-inspired curriculum developed over four years of teaching a module on choral conducting education in three formats: online, as blended, and in-person. The learners were primary school generalist student-teachers. They had diverse backgrounds, experiences, and levels of confidence in choral singing and conducting. Examining UDL through the theoretical lens of inclusive pedagogy offered a theoretical foundation to discuss my approach to creating inclusive choral conducting environments that promote learning and participation. At the same time, implementing inclusive pedagogy through UDL brought to the surface institutional challenges and …

Activity Design Principles To Support Engineering Engagement For Families With Preschool-Age Children From Low-Income English-And Spanish-Speaking Communities, Scott A. Pattison, Smirla Ramos Montañez, Viviana López Burgos, Gina Svarovsky, María Quijano, Amy Corbett, Catherine Wagner, Diana Contreras

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Existing evidence highlights the significance of family STEM learning experiences during early childhood. However, there is a lack of research specific to early childhood family-based learning in the field of engineering, especially with preschool-age children (three to five years old). To address this gap and inform engineering education programs for young children, we conducted a design-based research study in collaboration with 15 Spanish-and English-speaking families with preschool-age children from low-income communities. Our study aimed to develop and test a series of family-based engineering design activities while also identifying underlying design principles. Guided by an asset-based family learning framework, which acknowledges …

Valuing Fruit Tree Lease Contracts Under Uncertainty: A Probabilistic Framework For Fair Pricing, Abdurakhman Abdurakhman, Agus Sihabuddin, Kurniawan Chandra Wijaya, Evita Purnaningrum, Di Asih I Maruddani

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Fruit tree lease contracts are a prevalent economic practice in Indonesia, especially within rural communities. This study addresses the challenge of establishing equitable contract prices for both lessees and tree owners, specifically by integrating the inherent uncertainties associated with crop yield and fruit price fluctuations. To achieve this, we develop and employ two distinct models: Fixed-Time Discount Model (FTD) and the Dynamic-Time Discount Model (DTD). Each model is mathematically formulated, leveraging a Poisson distribution to capture yield uncertainty and a Uniform distribution to represent fruit price variability. Through computations, we evaluate the impact of key parameters - average yield ( …

The Social Aesthetics Of Recognition, Italo Alves Sep 2025

The Social Aesthetics Of Recognition, Italo Alves

Dissertations

The history of social philosophy is a history of suspicion toward the aesthetic (1). However, since we apprehend social reality fundamentally through its aesthetic appearances, an account is needed of how “the aesthetic” must enter the social-philosophical discourse, particularly in reconstructive models of social critique. I call this account “social aesthetics.” Social aesthetics illuminates how certain social experiences generate normative claims even in the lack of discursive articulation. (2) I argue that the philosophy of recognition, concerned with this relationship between social experience and normative claim-making, contains an unacknowledged aesthetic dimension, which I uncover through a critical reading of Axel …

Advancing Ckd Diagnosis: Race-Free Egfr, Cystatin C, And Genetic Insights, Halah Tariq Albar

Saudi Toxicology Journal

Globally, the rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are increasing due to the increasing incidence of hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. Early detection and treatment of kidney disease are essential in improving health outcomes. Estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is used to diagnose, stage, and manage CKD. CKD biomarkers are broadly categorized into traditional (serum creatinine), emerging (cystatin C), and disease specific (Interleukin-6). The purpose of this narrative review is to synthesize the current evidence regarding the use of eGFR in diverse populations. The initial eGFR equations included race variables, which created a controversial debate about their relevancy and has …

Fathers' Racial Differences In Perceived Workplace-Induced Stereotype Threat: Impacts On Sense Of Belonging, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover, Frances Evalyne Kealiimahiaiokalani Hampton Sep 2025

Fathers' Racial Differences In Perceived Workplace-Induced Stereotype Threat: Impacts On Sense Of Belonging, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover, Frances Evalyne Kealiimahiaiokalani Hampton

Dissertations and Theses

Black fathers (BFs) face unique workplace challenges due to racialized and gendered stereotypes that undermine their legitimacy as men, workers, and parents. Drawing on Stereotype Threat Theory (STT) and Stereotype Embodiment Theory (SET), this study examined how workplace-induced stereotype threat (WIST) affects BFs' job attitudes and turnover intentions (TIs). I hypothesized that BFs would report higher WIST than White fathers (WFs), and that WIST would mediate the effects of race-related perceptions on job satisfaction (JS), sense of belonging (SOB), and TIs. In addition, perceived organizational support (POS) was tested as a moderator on the relationships between WIST and these job-related …

The Effects Of Targeted Interventions On Student Engagement With Feedback: A Meta-Analysis, Andy A. Accettola

Dissertations

ABSTRACT This meta-analysis examines the effects of classroom interventions aimed at enhancing student engagement with feedback in K–12 and higher education settings. Drawing on the framework developed by Winstone et al. (2017), interventions were categorized into four major feedback engagement categories and 14 subcomponents. A systematic review identified eligible experimental studies published between 2014 and 2023, each reporting outcomes relevant to student feedback engagement. Effect sizes were calculated using standardized mean differences, and subgroup analyses explored the relative influence of intervention categories, subcomponents, and moderators. Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that targeted interventions to enhance student engagement with feedback generally …

Dynamical Regulation Of Blood Pressure And Cognitive Function, Joshua Sweigert, Tara Gruenewald, Margie Lachman, Teresa Seeman, Maxine Weinstein, Tse-Hwei Choo, Martina Pavlicova, Ramakrishna Mukkamala, Richard P. Sloan

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

BACKGROUND

Blood pressure (BP) is not steady. It varies over intervals from months to consecutive cardiac cycles, and this variation contains meaningful information beyond mean BP. Variability over multiple clinic visits (VVV-BP) and during 24-h ambulatory monitoring (ABPV) is positively related to risk of stroke and coronary artery disease and negatively associated with cognitive performance. Beat-to-beat BP variation, often quantified as low frequency variability (0.04–0.15 Hz, LF-BPV), is less well-studied. Here, we examine the relationship between LF-BPV and cognitive outcomes in 1953 participants from the Midlife in the US study.

METHODS

Participants completed the Brief Test of Adult Cognition by …

Singular-Perturbation Control Of A Tendon-Driven Soft Robot: Theory And Experiments, Lucas Novaki Ribeiro, Pablo Borja, Cosimo Della Santina, Bastian Deutschmann Sep 2025

Singular-Perturbation Control Of A Tendon-Driven Soft Robot: Theory And Experiments, Lucas Novaki Ribeiro, Pablo Borja, Cosimo Della Santina, Bastian Deutschmann

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The existing model-based control strategies for tendon-driven continuum soft robots neglect the dynamics of the actuation system. Nevertheless, such dynamics have an important impact on the closed-loop performance. This work analyzes the influence of the actuation dynamics in tendon-driven continuum soft robots performing trajectory-tracking tasks. To this end, we use singular perturbation (SP) theory to design controllers that account for such dynamics. We provide the analytical formulation of the SP controllers and their in-depth experimental validation. Additionally, we use high-and low-stiffness tendons to experimentally compare the performance of the proposed SP controllers against traditional feedback control schemes that disregard the …

The Influence Of Defects: Oxidation Of Non-Planar Transition Metal Model Catalysts, Maxwell Gillum Sep 2025

The Influence Of Defects: Oxidation Of Non-Planar Transition Metal Model Catalysts, Maxwell Gillum

Dissertations

Metal-catalyzed oxidation reactions are a major application of heterogeneous catalysis and are a widely applied synthetic route for the production of chemicals and reagents essential to modern society. However, as the intricacies of heterogeneous surface catalysis are slowly being unraveled, minute details of the catalytic environment have been revealed to play outsized roles in the catalytic activity of the surface. The experiments herein further investigate the interplay between surface geometry and the formation oxygen-induced surface structures. Understanding how defects influence surface reactivity is a necessary step in gaining the ability to accurately model heterogeneous catalytic environments. Two different aspects of …

How School Psychologists Narrow The Socioeconomic Opportunity Gap: The Practices And Beliefs Of School Psychologists In High-Performing, High-Poverty Schools, Nora Durgin

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the practices and beliefs of school psychologists working in high-performing, high-poverty (HP/HP) schools in order to make recommendations for how their practices can be replicated in other high-poverty schools to help narrow the socioeconomic opportunity gap. Results indicate that school psychologists engage in the major professional activities of school psychology practice to a similar degree as is documented in the existing literature. Despite relatively lower levels of engagement in delivering mental and behavioral health services, school psychologists view the practice to be highly impactful on students’ academic achievement. The school-wide activities commonly …

Parental Autonomy Support And Children’S Affect As Predictors Of Children’S Stem Engagement In An Informal Educational Context, Bianca Martins Aldrich Sep 2025

Parental Autonomy Support And Children’S Affect As Predictors Of Children’S Stem Engagement In An Informal Educational Context, Bianca Martins Aldrich

Dissertations

In this project, we examined relations between parental talk and children’s affect on children’s STEM talk during an engineering-related activity (i.e., tinkering) in a local children’s museum. We characterized children’s affect in terms of valence (positive or negative) and activation (activating or deactivating), and parental talk was characterized as autonomy supportive or directive, as well as STEM-related or not. Parents and their 4- to 10-year-old children were recruited at the entrance of the Tinkering Lab exhibit at Chicago Children’s Museum. Parents and children were video and audio recorded during the activity. We coded parents’ and children’s behaviors using a time-sampling …

Experimental Assessments Of Second-Hand Battery Degradation Under V2g Operation For Electric Vessels, Olamide Olagunju, Tamer Kamel, Sarah Fear, Lee J. Durndell Sep 2025

Experimental Assessments Of Second-Hand Battery Degradation Under V2g Operation For Electric Vessels, Olamide Olagunju, Tamer Kamel, Sarah Fear, Lee J. Durndell

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Vessel-to-Grid (V2G) technology offers significant potential for supporting grid stability, boosting renewable energy integration, and increasing the profitability of electric vessels (EVs) through intelligent energy management. However, concerns linger regarding the impact of frequent charge-discharge cycles on battery health, especially with the further inclusion of the V2G power cycles. The impact of this approach has been well-studied for road-based electric vehicles, where the concluded outcomes are particularly customised based on the road vehicle operational duty cycles. However, this approach remains largely unexplored for marine EV batteries, due to their unique duty cycles and implementation of second-hand battery systems for use …

Continuous Pump-Probe Experiment To Observe Zeeman Wave-Packet Dynamics, K. L. Romans, K. Foster, S. Majumdar, B. P. Acharya, O. Russ, A. H.N.C. De Silva, Daniel Fischer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we study the coherent dynamics of an atomic Zeeman wave packet using a continuous pump-probe scheme. A polarized Zeeman wave packet is created in laser-cooled lithium atoms via few-photon excitation by a femtosecond laser pulse, producing a state with a magnetic moment tilted relative to an external magnetic field. The subsequent Larmor precession of the atomic magnetic moment is probed via continuous ionization by an optical dipole trap (ODT) laser. The resulting ionization fragments—photoelectrons and photo ions—are detected in coincidence using a cold target recoil ion momentum spectrometer (COLTRIMS). While the ODT facilitates further cooling of the …

Euler’S Original Derivation Of Elastica Equation, Shigeki Matsutani Sep 2025

Euler’S Original Derivation Of Elastica Equation, Shigeki Matsutani

Euleriana

Euler derived the differential equations of elastica by the variational method in 1744, but his original derivation has never been properly interpreted or explained in terms of modern mathematics. We elaborate Euler's original derivation of elastica and show that Euler used Noether's theorem concerning the translational symmetry of elastica, although Noether published her theorem in 1918. It is also shown that his equation is essentially the static modified KdV equation which is obtained by the isometric and isoenergy conditions, known as the Goldstein-Petrich scheme.
