We report direct measurements of changes in diving and movement behavior for 53 goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) in relation to experimentally controlled mid-frequency (3–4 kHz) active sonar (MFAS) signals. These signals simulate powerful Navy sources that have been associated with multiple mortal stranding events for this species. We deployed a multi-scale combination of tags to monitor individual whales, including 50 long-duration (weeks), coarse-resolution satellite-transmitting tags and 3 short-duration (hours), high-resolution archival depth, orientation, and acoustic tags. We evaluated behavioral responses during 13 experimental trials (9 MFAS; 4 no-MFAS controls), resulting in 72 exposure events; some individuals were exposed in multiple …

Background Infants born to pregnant women living with HIV (WLHIV) are at greater risk for morbidity and mortality and may also have poorer developmental outcomes as compared with infants who are not exposed to HIV. Nutrition interventions in pregnancy may affect developmental outcomes.
Objectives This study evaluated the effect of maternal vitamin D supplementation on infant development outcomes.
Design We conducted a secondary analysis of a randomised, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial of maternal vitamin D supplementation from June 2015 to October 2019.
Setting Antenatal care clinics in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Participants Pregnant WLHIV and their offspring.
Interventions Daily 3000 IU …

The Doppler Wind and Temperature Sounder (DWTS) is being developed for flight on NASA’s Dynamical Neutral Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (DYNAMIC) satellite. DWTS will view the Earth limb orthogonal to the spacecraft ram and uses gas-filter correlation radiometry to detect the Doppler shift of atmospheric emission. The observations yield horizontal winds and kinetic temperature with high precision, excellent spatial resolution, and altitude coverage from 40–250 km. DWTS detects Doppler shifting of NO and 13CO2 atmospheric emission lines by passing the incident light through an onboard cell containing both gases that is cooled to near cryogenic temperatures. This work describes the DWTS instrument, …

Background: Many attempts to validate gait pipelines that process sensor data to detect gait events have focused on the detection of initial contacts only in supervised settings using a single sensor. Objective: To evaluate the performance of a gait pipeline in detecting initial/final contacts using a step detection algorithm adaptive to different test settings, smartphone wear locations, and gait impairment levels. Methods: In GaitLab (ISRCTN15993728), healthy controls (HC) and people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS; Expanded Disability Status Scale 0.0-6.5) performed supervised Two-Minute Walk Test [2MWT] (structured in-lab overground and treadmill 2MWT) during two on-site visits carrying six smartphones and unsupervised …

Prior work has shown that Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) data contains valuable behavioral information. Many existing methodologies rely on timing features or focus solely on workload classification. In this study, we propose a novel approach to malware classification using only TLB-related Hardware Performance Counters (HPCs), explicitly excluding any dependence on timing features such as task execution duration or memory access timing. Our methodology evaluates whether TLB data alone, without any timing information, can effectively distinguish between malicious and benign programs. We test this across three classification scenarios: (1) A binary classification problem involving distinguishing malicious from benign tasks, (2) a …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Preparing teachers for instructional change is no easy task. For content areas already under the national spotlight, such as mathematics, transitioning to new curriculum materials while concurrently enacting instructional reform creates both a challenge and an opportunity. This paper discusses how professional development (PD) partnerships between two cross-state universities and respective school districts designed and implemented graduate courses for elementary teachers targeted at curricular and instructional reform specific to each district. In this mixed methods case study, we examined the change in participants’ beliefs and practices following PD during mathematics curriculum reform. Our findings support a collaborative, district-university PD model …

Development Of Interactive Learning Media Based On Illustrated Word Cards To Improve Students' Reading Skills, Laila Nadya, Riris Nurkholida Rambe
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
To improve the reading skills of first-grade elementary school students in Indonesian, particularly in relation to reading, this project aims to create picture card-based learning materials. The five steps of the ADDIE development model, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, were used in the research and development (R&D) process. Pretests and posttests, expert validation, questionnaires, interviews, and observations were some of the methods used to collect data. Experts in content, media, and language verified the media that had been created, and feedback from teachers and students assessed its usefulness. With a feasibility rating of 94% from media experts, 91% …

This study investigates how a geometric plane with a similar area can have different circumferences, and how a geometric plane with the same area can have different areas. Classroom learning is TPS, with an emphasis on maximizing group work. Two students of 107 of 5th elementary school graders were selected by convenience sampling to be interviewed. The findings show that group discussions help students develop and improve their individual mathematical abilities; students can determine geometric planes with similar areas but different circumferences and geometric planes with different areas but similar circumferences; and 5th graders students can conserve length or area …

Teaching English For Net Generation Through Virtual Reality Assisted Language Learning In Efl Classroom, Sakhi Herwiana, Ahmad Munir
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This paper aims to give insight and recommend teachers to implement Virtual Reality in language learning, especially in EFL classrooms such as in Indonesia. In the digital era, the use of technology by young people cannot be separated from daily life. Therefore, teachers can use and create the course materials by implementing virtual reality in building language acquisition instead of using traditional methods and textbooks. Using interesting learning sources can enhance students’ motivation to learn. The use of Virtual Reality will give new experiences and environments for the students to learn a new language especially English.

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This research explores the influence of using open-ended worksheets in interactive demonstration learning on students' understanding of harmonic motion and scientific reasoning. It is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design. Data were obtained from conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning tests and analyzed using parametric and non-parametric tests. The results show that open-ended worksheets enhance students' concept comprehension and scientific reasoning. There was a significant difference in conceptual understanding between the two classes. However, there was no difference in scientific reasoning. These findings hold valuable implications for improving learning with open-ended worksheets and interactive demonstration models.

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues that Bangladesh’s post-crisis transition following Sheikh Hasina’s 2024 exit as prime minister marks a pivotal moment for democratization with implications for South Asia’s stability and the Indo-Pacific strategic framework. Using Stanley J. Wiechnik’s democratization framework, the study examines the phases of liberalization, transition, and consolidation in Bangladesh’s polarized and factionalized society. Drawing on news reports and policy documents, it examines domestic instability and pressures of geopolitical competition between China and India. The findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and military practitioners, emphasizing the need for strategic engagement to support democratic consolidation and manage regional security interests.
