Targeting Cancer With T Cells: Preclinical And In Silico Insights To Improve Immunotherapies, Nina Obertopp Mar 2026

Targeting Cancer With T Cells: Preclinical And In Silico Insights To Improve Immunotherapies, Nina Obertopp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

T-cell–based immunotherapies are often constrained by limited trafficking and persistence in tumors and by functional exhaustion under chronic antigen exposure. This dissertation addresses these barriers through two distinct strategies: (i) preclinical studies testing how radiation therapy modulates tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) therapy, and (ii) agent based modeling (ABM) to optimize treatment day treatment-free intervals (TFI) in T-cell engager (TCE) therapy. (i) In a human papillomavirus–positive (HPV⁺) head-and-neck cancer (HNC) model, a single local-dose of RT (8 Gy) delivered five days before tumor harvest increased the success and functional quality of ex vivo TIL outgrowth from tumor fragments, enriching polyfunctional CD8⁺ subsets. …

How Euler Could Have Done It: Euler And A Heuristic Derivation Of The Prime Number Theorem, Alexander Aycock

Euleriana

We present an argument that leads to the formulation of the Prime Number Theorem that Euler could have given.

The Modern History Of The Basel Problem, John Campbell, Paul Levrie Mar 2026

The Modern History Of The Basel Problem, John Campbell, Paul Levrie

Euleriana

The \emph{Basel problem} refers to the problem of determining a closed form for the infinite series $\frac{1}{1^2} + \frac{1}{2^2} + \cdots$. If we consider what mathematical results have the most peer-reviewed papers devoted to new ways of proving such results, Euler's formula $\frac{1}{1^2} + \frac{1}{2^2} + \cdots = \frac{\pi^2}{6}$ is certainly among the top of such results. This motivates our historical study of peer-reviewed papers based on proofs of Euler's formula, and we introduce what appears to be the most comprehensive and up-to-date and exhaustive catalogue of peer-reviewed, published papers in the 20th and 21st centuries devoted to or mainly …

Even Repdigits Are Not Perfect: Conclusions From Triangular Numbers, Uwe Hassler

Euleriana

Are there nontrivial repdigits that are perfect numbers? This note gives an answer: not for numbers smaller than $10^{1500}$. This finding follows from results for triangular numbers. Passing by, I review Euler's contributions on polygonal numbers.

Euleriana

We present several results stated by Euler on what is today called the Gaussian hypergeometric function. For this purpose, we compare the results found by Gauss to Euler's results.

The Extent To Which The Earth's Motion Is Perturbed By The Moon, More Accurately Investigated: An English Translation Of E139, Patrick T. Headley Mar 2026

The Extent To Which The Earth's Motion Is Perturbed By The Moon, More Accurately Investigated: An English Translation Of E139, Patrick T. Headley

Euleriana

In Tabulae astronomicae solis et lunae (Solar and lunar astronomical tables) (E87), published in 1746, Euler made a first attempt to correct his astronomical tables for the gravitational attraction of the Earth toward the Moon, simply by accounting for the difference between the position of the Earth and the center of gravity of the Earth-Moon system. In this article Euler revisited the problem, noting that this center of gravity would not itself take an elliptical path around the Sun. To model the motion more accurately, Euler considered the separate gravitational attractions of the Sun and Moon acting on the Earth. …

About Infinite Algebraic Curves Whose Indefinite Lengths Equal An Elliptic Arc: An English Translation Of E780, Derek R. Aoki Mar 2026

About Infinite Algebraic Curves Whose Indefinite Lengths Equal An Elliptic Arc: An English Translation Of E780, Derek R. Aoki

Euleriana

Euler continues his study of algebraic curves with equal arc length, a subject to which he returned several times. After a brief review, he introduces an infinite family of curves with the same indefinite length as a given ellipse. However, this first family is by his own admission poorly motivated, so he derives directly a different but related family of curves with the same indefinite length as a given ellipse.

Bruen As Heller: Text, History, And Tradition In The Lower Courts, Leo Bernabei

Fordham Law Review Online

The Constitution and conventional wisdom suggest that lower courts must follow the most persuasive interpretations of U.S. Supreme Court precedent. But that does not always happen. Scholars recognize judicial under enforcement of Supreme Court precedent in several fields. This Essay contributes to this scholarship by analyzing lower court applications of New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, in which the Supreme Court held that firearm laws must be consistent with the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. The lower courts vary widely in their approaches to analyzing gun laws under this standard. On one end, a small …

The Need For Developing Psychologically Informed Physical Therapy Education, Dustin Cox Mar 2026

The Need For Developing Psychologically Informed Physical Therapy Education, Dustin Cox

Journal of Applied Disciplines

Chronic pain presents a multifaceted challenge for healthcare providers, often impacting patients' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Research indicates that individuals with chronic pain process pain through emotional and reward pathways in the brain, underscoring the need for integrative treatment approaches. Evidence supports the effectiveness of combining psychological interventions with physical rehabilitation to improve outcomes. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a mindfulness-based behavioral therapy, has shown promise in addressing the psychological dimensions of chronic pain. However, physical therapists often lack formal training in ACT. This study protocol was designed to explore effective methods for educating physical therapists in ACT principles …

Gambling In Pre-Statehood Alaska, Robert M. Jarvis Mar 2026

Gambling In Pre-Statehood Alaska, Robert M. Jarvis

UNLV Gaming Law Journal

This article concerns gambling in Alaska in the period prior to statehood (1867– 1958). While the courts in this era did not generate very many gambling opinions, the ones they did issue provide a feel for what life was like in the region. In addition, Alaska’s current ban on most forms of gambling can be directly traced back to its first gambling law (1884).

Averaging Principle For A General Class Of Periodic Functions In Discrete Spaces, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert Mar 2026

Averaging Principle For A General Class Of Periodic Functions In Discrete Spaces, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline G. Mesquita, Sabrina Streipert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we develop a periodic averaging principle for arbitrary discrete time domains, leveraging a novel definition of periodicity. This definition does not rely on the classical requirement for the time domain itself to be periodic. We implement this averaging principle across diverse discrete time domains and explore a range of periodic functions within this extended context. The paper contains several examples with numerical simulations, providing visual demonstrations of our results. This highlights the versatility of our averaging principle and its potential to understand dynamics of nonautonomous recurrences with complex temporal patterns.

Controllability Of The Semilinear Benjamin–Bona–Mahony Dynamic Equation On Homogeneous Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Cosme Duque, Hugo Leiva Mar 2026

Controllability Of The Semilinear Benjamin–Bona–Mahony Dynamic Equation On Homogeneous Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Cosme Duque, Hugo Leiva

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work investigates the approximate controllability and free-time approximate controllability of a generalized semi linear Benjamin–Bona–Mahony type dynamic equation defined on homogeneous time scales, subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. To accomplish this, the problem is framed within an abstract setting, employing the -semigroup theory on time scales. Moreover, we apply a technique introduced by Bashirov et al. [1, 2], which enables us to avoid relying on fixed point theorems.

Road Salt Alters The Ecological Effects Of Atrazine-Cypermethrin Mixtures In Freshwater Microalgae Mixtures In Freshwater Microalgae, Arif Ahmed, Matthew S Schuler Mar 2026

Road Salt Alters The Ecological Effects Of Atrazine-Cypermethrin Mixtures In Freshwater Microalgae Mixtures In Freshwater Microalgae, Arif Ahmed, Matthew S Schuler

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Pesticides and road deicing salts are widespread contaminants in freshwater systems and frequently co-occur due to runoff and direct application. Atrazine, a triazine herbicide, and sodium chloride (NaCl), commonly used for road deicing, can independently alter water chemistry and affect aquatic primary producers. Atrazine can affect the freshwater algae, either inhibiting or stimulating their growth. The prolonged persistence of dissolved salts, ranging from decades to centuries, can lead to complex environmental scenarios characterized by multiple interacting stressors. Although many studies have examined each pollutant separately, their interactive effects have only recently gained scientific attention. This study investigated the individual and …

(Si16-04) Some Fixed Point Theorems On Chatterjea Type Contractions, Irom Shashikanta Singh, Y. Mahendra Singh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper establishes the existence of fixed points related to strict Chatterjee contractive mappings by relaxing the compactness of the underlying spaces and the continuity of the mapping involved, using altering distance functions and comparison functions in the general setting of metric spaces. Several non-trivial and illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate, support, and validate the obtained theoretical results. In addition, a theorem that can characterize the completeness of metric spaces through the existence of fixed points is rigorously proven and discussed. Furthermore, a theorem on strict Chatterjea-type modulus contractive mappings without continuity assumptions and with relaxed compactness conditions is …

(Si16-06) Equations Of Geodesics In Two-Dimensional Finsler Manifold With A Special Cubic (Α, Β)-Metric, Sejal Prajapati, Brijesh Kumar Tripathi, V. K. Chaubey Mar 2026

(Si16-06) Equations Of Geodesics In Two-Dimensional Finsler Manifold With A Special Cubic (Α, Β)-Metric, Sejal Prajapati, Brijesh Kumar Tripathi, V. K. Chaubey

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Geodesics represent the shortest path between two points in curved spacetime and are vital in the study of Finsler manifolds. Matsumoto and Park first derived the geodesic equation as a secondorder differential equation in a two-dimensional Finsler manifold with Randers, Kropina, and Matsumoto metrics. Building on this foundation, our paper presents the geodesic differential equation for a two-dimensional Finsler manifold using a special cubic power metric. In this two-dimensional setting, this work also looks at certain well-known geometric curves and analyzes their variants as solutions to the geodesic differential equation. Additionally, this work examines the geometric applications of the geodesic’s …

(Si16-07) Computing The Kirchhoff Index And The Wiener Index Of Spiro Para Hexagonal Cylinder Chain, Md Selim Reja, Sk. Md. Abu Nayeem

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In graph theory, the Kirchhoff index serves as a metric to evaluate the complexity of a graph. It is determined by adding up the resistance distances between every pair of vertices in the graph. In a network created from the given graph by substituting each edge by a unit resistor, the resistance distance between a pair of specified vertices is equivalent to the electrical resistance between them in the constructed network. Basically, it measures the convenience with which data or flow can move between various locations in a network that the graph represents. In terms of graph matrices, the Kirchhoff …

(Si16-11) Seasonal And Temporal Optimization Of Solar Energy Harvesting In Smart Iot Lighting Infrastructure, Abhijit Paul, Rishabh Pipalwa, Sabyasachi Mondal North - Eastern Hill University, Shillong, India

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study investigates the seasonal and temporal optimization of solar energy harvesting in a smart IoT-enabled streetlighting infrastructure by focusing on the theoretical determination of optimal solar panel tilt angles. The proposed system incorporates auto-adjusted solar panels integrated with an IoT network comprising sensors, microcontrollers, and streetlights. A key innovation lies in the implementation of a modified MQTT communication protocol, which enables efficient, localized decision-making and data exchange among components. Simulation results indicate that the modified MQTT protocol significantly reduces communication delay and power consumption compared to the conventional MQTT approach, thereby enhancing the overall system performance. Detailed analysis of …

(Si16-21) Dynamical Study Of A Hassell-Varley Model With Nonlinear Harvesting And Fear Effect In Prey, Aditya Bhattacharya, Anindita Bhattacharyya Mar 2026

(Si16-21) Dynamical Study Of A Hassell-Varley Model With Nonlinear Harvesting And Fear Effect In Prey, Aditya Bhattacharya, Anindita Bhattacharyya

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, a one predator-one prey model incorporating Richards’ type growth in prey population, Hassell-Varley type functional response and Michaelis-Menten type prey harvesting is proposed and analyzed. Richards’ type growth with fear factor is incorporated in the proposed model to generalize the reduction effect of predator-induced fear on the rate of growth of the prey population. Positivity and boundedness of the system’s solutions are first established to ensure biological feasibility of the model. Existence and stability conditions of various types of equilibrium points associated with the model such as trivial equilibrium, axial (predator–free) equilibrium and coexistence equilibrium are obtained …

The Impact Of Human Myoblasts On Macrophage Polarization In A Coculture Model, Elisabeth Ann Stodola Mar 2026

The Impact Of Human Myoblasts On Macrophage Polarization In A Coculture Model, Elisabeth Ann Stodola

Biomedical Engineering

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the lower extremities that occludes blood flow, and affects over 200 million people worldwide. Without effective treatment, PAD can lead to claudication, ischemia, ulcers, and gangrene. PAD causes more amputations in the United States than any other condition, and for severe cases that require revascularization, procedures benefit fewer than 50% of patients. This demonstrates a clear need for alternative therapies. Potential therapies for PAD target expansion of collateral blood vessels around the area of occlusion – a process called arteriogenesis to compensate for loss of blood flow …

The Use Of Video Modeling To Teach Algebraic Equations To Secondary Students With And At-Risk For Disabilities, Maria Mcgrath, Emily Hornung, Shannon Gormley Budin Mar 2026

The Use Of Video Modeling To Teach Algebraic Equations To Secondary Students With And At-Risk For Disabilities, Maria Mcgrath, Emily Hornung, Shannon Gormley Budin

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Identifying mathematics interventions that are efficient, effective, and increase independence are vital for students with or at-risk for mathematics disabilities. Interventions used in general education or instructional support settings must also be feasible and allow teachers to meet both individual as well as whole-class needs. Digital technologies such as video modeling can embody several high-leverage instructional practices at once to facilitate the learning of fundamental mathematics concepts, such as algebra. A multiple baseline across participant design with an additional nonconcurrent replication in an applied setting was used to evaluate the effectiveness of video modeling on student ability to solve two-step …

Stress Management And Resilience Among Students Enrolled In The Entry Level Master Of Science In Nursing (Elmsn) Program, Pius Omolewa, Adekemi Adedipe, Nassrine Noureddine, Destiny Roberts

All Faculty Scholarship

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of mindfulness exercises on stress management and resilience among ELMSN students. Methods: The study was a quasi-experimental design that used a paired samples t-test to compare pre-test and post-test of students’ scores on both GAD-7 anxiety screening tool and short version of Grit-scale. Statistical tests were conducted with significance set at p < 0.05 (two-sided). All analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 31.0 to compare pre-/post-test scores, determine differences, and statistical significance of interventions among the cohort. And a priori power analysis was conducted to determine the required sample size for a paired samples t-test. With an alpha level of 0.05 and a medium effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.50), a total sample size of N = 34 was determined to be sufficient to achieve a power of 0.80. Results: A convenience sample of 40 students (35 females and 5 males) participated in the study. Students had more anxiety before mindfulness exercises (M = 7.00, SD = 5.5) compared to after the mindfulness exercises (M = 6.2, SD = 3.4), t(39) = 1.41, p = 0.17. The effect size was small, d = 0.22. However, the difference in the students’ anxiety levels after the mindfulness exercises was not statistically significant, with a p-value of 0.17. On the resilience, students were less resilient before mindfulness exercises (M = 3.58, SD …

A Diffuse Interface Model And Fully Decoupled, Energy-Stable Scheme For The Two-Phase Ferrofluid Flows In Porous Media, Guo Dong Zhang, Shuai Zhou, Yunqing Huang, Xiaoming He, Xiaofeng Yang Mar 2026

A Diffuse Interface Model And Fully Decoupled, Energy-Stable Scheme For The Two-Phase Ferrofluid Flows In Porous Media, Guo Dong Zhang, Shuai Zhou, Yunqing Huang, Xiaoming He, Xiaofeng Yang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a new diffuse interface model for two-phase porous media ferrofluid flows, employing the phase-field method and establishing an associated energy law. This thermodynamically consistent multi-physics model integrates the Cahn-Hilliard equations, Darcy equations, the magnetostatic equation, and magnetization equations. To efficiently solve the system by addressing its inherent nonlinearities, coupling, and saddle-point structure, we incorporate several advanced techniques, including the SAV-ZEC method to handle nonlinearities and couplings, a reformulated approach to decouple the linear coupling of the magnetic potential and magnetization, and the pressure projection method to decouple velocity and pressure. This results in a numerical scheme that is …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 39. What About Wallace's 'Agnosticism'...?, Charles H. Smith Mar 2026

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 39. What About Wallace's 'Agnosticism'...?, Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) seems to have distinguished his earlier years of agnosticism from his later period as a spiritualist, but a closer look at the situation suggests he actually remained an agnostic all the way through to the end of his life. The confusion is occasioned by a lack of terminology that can be applied to his position, which most closely resembles a Spinozian manner of thinking.
