Speleothems from caves in near-permafrost regions can provide unique insights into the climatic history of temperature-sensitive environments. These regions are often remote and only seasonally accessible, which makes cave monitoring – a requirement for speleothem-based proxy interpretation – challenging. We document ventilation, the infiltration regime, and the isotopic composition of dripwater in Botovskaya Cave in southern Siberia, a host to speleothems previously used to reconstruct Quaternary permafrost dynamics in continental Eurasia. We explore surface and cave temperature records, cave air CO2 concentration data and stable isotopes in precipitation and dripwater and evaluate infiltration conditions and the sensitivity of speleothems …
New Hampshire K–6th Grade Teachers’ Mathematics Professional Development Experiences On Classroom Instruction, Danielle C. Nutting
New Hampshire K–6th Grade Teachers’ Mathematics Professional Development Experiences On Classroom Instruction, Danielle C. Nutting
Doctor of Education Program Dissertations
This phenomenological study explored the experiences of public school elementary teachers in New Hampshire who participated in math professional development. The problem this study addressed was students in U.S. public elementary schools have not made sufficient progress in mathematics (The Nation’s Report Card, 2022) and lack of progress in mathematics has been attributed to teachers not receiving adequate professional development in this subject area (Campbell & Griffin, 2017). Analysis of seven semistructured participant interviews revealed four findings: (a) elementary teachers understood the significance of an effective math coach; (b) elementary teachers recognized when their professional learning communities were not effective; …
Numerals And Other Means Of Expressing Plurality In Language And Thought: A Developmental Perspective Across Cultures., Giovanni Giuseppe G.G. Nicosia Prof.
Numerals And Other Means Of Expressing Plurality In Language And Thought: A Developmental Perspective Across Cultures., Giovanni Giuseppe G.G. Nicosia Prof.
Numeracy
Several ancient languages use linguistic structures to differentiate between singular, dual, and plural forms that are used when one, two, or many objects are referenced. (Some languages go further, adding a trial form to differentiate two from three.) In many modern languages, numerals are used to convey precise number. After reviewing a range of ways languages express number (including the interesting case of Pirahã which does not express precise number), the paper concludes with a proposed developmental path for the expression of quantity in languages.
Ice Temperature And Heat Transfer Processes In Cave Glaciers, Aurel Persoiu
Ice Temperature And Heat Transfer Processes In Cave Glaciers, Aurel Persoiu
International Journal of Speleology
Cave glaciers (i.e., perennial ice accumulations in caves), found throughout mountainous regions in Europe and North America are at risk of extinction due to rising air temperature and altered rainfall patterns. Their formation and subsequent preservation is the result of accumulation of ice during winter months and limited ablation in summer. These processes, in turn, are controlled by air temperature, which determines the overall mass balance of ice. One important aspect is the heat the ice mass loses in winter, which increases its resilience during summer. While ice caves’ climate has been intensively studied in the past, investigations of ice …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
This study examines the seismic response of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers subjected to ground motion (GM) records from the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake by comparing the impact of pulse-like versus no-pulse records. A suite of 300 nonlinear Bouc-Wen hysteretic models was developed to represent piers with varying nonlinear behavior. Each Bouc-Wen model was assessed under 24 pulse-like and 28 no-pulse GMs, resulting in 15,600 nonlinear time-history simulations. Subsequently, the relationship between Bouc-Wen parameters (i.e., period and yield displacement) and seismic responses (i.e., maximum displacement, residual displacement, and maximum acceleration) was analyzed. The results show that pulse-like records produce 5 times …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We introduce the notion of Raney morphism between MT-algebras and show that the resulting category is equivalent to the category of Raney extensions. This is done by generalizing the construction of the Funayama envelope of a frame. The resulting notion of the T0-hull of a Raney extension generalizes that of the TD-hull of a frame.

Sensing Negative-Cone Rotational Diffusion Of Dipole-Like Emitters, Yuanxin Qiu, Kaizhi A. Nie, Matthew D. Lew
Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations
Fluorescence anisotropy and single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM) are powerful techniques that quantify the rotational diffusion of dipole-like emitters, which is important for sensing molecular interactions and chemical environments at the nanoscale. Numerous theoretical and experimental studies have thoroughly characterized single-molecule rotations even when those rotations are much faster than the detector integration time. Here, we extend the theory of measuring rotational diffusion to situations where a single dipole rotates uniformly everywhere outside of an isotropic cone of a certain size, termed a negative cone. This scenario corresponds to negative fluorescence anisotropy 𝑟 and has been observed in emitters exhibiting strong …
Tutoring Prompt For Personalized Self-Study Using Generative Ai, Vasiliy S. Znamenskiy
Tutoring Prompt For Personalized Self-Study Using Generative Ai, Vasiliy S. Znamenskiy
Open Educational Resources
This educational material presents a reusable tutoring prompt for general-purpose generative AI systems (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity) designed to support personalized self-study. The prompt turns a chatbot into an adaptive self-testing engine: it asks a sequence of multiple-choice questions, waits for the learner’s response, provides brief feedback, and adjusts difficulty based on performance. While the approach can be adapted to many disciplines, the current implementation is tuned to College Physics 2e, Chapter 21 (Circuits and DC Instruments) and uses “formulas only” answer choices to emphasize symbolic reasoning and reduce reliance on verbal cues. Shared in the spirit …
Dual-Function Plasmonic Structure For Logic Operations And Circular Polarization Detection, Marjan Bazian, Mark C. Harrison
Dual-Function Plasmonic Structure For Logic Operations And Circular Polarization Detection, Marjan Bazian, Mark C. Harrison
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Many integrated photonic devices have a high potential for dual applications, making them more versatile components in photonic integrated circuits. In this study, we show that a plasmonic XOR gate structure, originally designed to perform logic operations, can also be used as a circular polarization detector. This multi-purpose capability stems from the phase-encoded input mechanism that controls the output response of the structure. We adapted this mechanism to select the output based on the polarization state of light. The design of this structure, utilizing the subwavelength field confinement of plasmonic waveguides, enables the integration of logic and detection functions into …

Computational Modeling Of Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Response In Plasmonic Waveguide Devices With Epsilon-Near-Zero Films, Kevin T. Le, Mark C. Harrison
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Silicon photonics faces fundamental limitations in nonlinear applications due to weak Kerr nonlinearity, substantial two-photon absorption, and coupling challenges with subwavelength structures. This work investigates epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials integrated into plasmonic waveguide architectures for enhanced nonlinear photonic devices. ENZ materials exhibit nonlinear refractive indices several orders of magnitude higher than conventional materials near their zero-permittivity wavelength, enabling giant optical effects over deeply sub-wavelength interaction lengths. We present finite element method simulations of plasmonic ENZ waveguides, investigating layer thickness optimization for nonlinear enhancement while minimizing optical losses. Initial modal analysis confirms superior field confinement in hybrid plasmonic-ENZ structures compared to conventional …

A Pocket Manual For Human Papillomavirus Vaccines, Natalie A Voss, J Brooks Jackson, Mary B Rysavy
A Pocket Manual For Human Papillomavirus Vaccines, Natalie A Voss, J Brooks Jackson, Mary B Rysavy
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide and is responsible for the majority of cervical, anal, and vaginal cancers. The first prophylactic HPV vaccine was introduced in the United States in 2006. Extensive evidence demonstrates the HPV vaccine is highly efficacious and effective, particularly when administered prior to HPV exposure. Despite strong safety data and proven cost-effectiveness, HPV vaccine uptake in the United States and globally remains suboptimal. Barriers to vaccination include limited knowledge, safety concerns, and logistical challenges. Current advancements focus on single-dose vaccine regimens, development of therapeutic vaccines, and higher-valent formulations. Expanding HPV vaccine …

Assessing The Performance Of A 3d Printed Pennsylvania-Style Black Light Moth Trap, Christopher B. Brown, Eva S. Conley, Peter White
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Passive light traps have long been a popular method used for trapping moths and other night-flying insects. Recent changes in the availability of equipment necessitate the development of accessible and effective alternatives for insect monitoring. This study assesses the performance of a 3D-printed Pennsylvania-style black light moth trap compared to the formerly available commercial BioQuip trap and investigates the impact of funnel size on catch rates. Our 3D-printed trap was compared to the BioQuip trap over ten trap-nights in Central Michigan. Results indicate that commercial BioQuip traps consistently captured significantly more moths than the 3D-printed prototype. An additional experiment evaluating …
Freshwater Quality For Recreation, Heather Nix, Masha Bokar
Freshwater Quality For Recreation, Heather Nix, Masha Bokar
Forestry and Natural Resources
South Carolina has many water resources that provide tremendous opportunities for people to enjoy water-based recreational activities, such as swimming, boating, and fishing. Participation in these activities produces significant economic benefits and supports many jobs throughout the state. However, at times, water quality may be unsafe for immersion or skin contact due to high levels of pollutants, such as bacteria or cyanotoxins. It is important for people to be aware of potential concerns and understand methods for determining if a waterbody’s current conditions are likely to be safe for primary or secondary recreation.

The Effect Of Debriefing Following A Computer-Based Low-Fidelity Simulation On The Self-Efficacy Of Health Professions Students: A Randomized Cross-Over Control Study, Matthew Mills, Enrico Gandolfi, Richard E. Ferdig, Kimberly Peer
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Simulations have been increasingly used in health science education to supplement clinical experience. There is evidence of the benefits of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) with debriefing, but HFS is costly and time-intensive to administer. Low-fidelity simulation (LFS) has been proposed as an alternative that is easier to scale and more cost-effective; however, the evidence surrounding its impact on students is mixed, possibly because debriefing is frequently omitted in LFS. Methods: A randomized experimental mixed methods cross-over control study was performed to evaluate the impact of a structured debriefing session following an interactive computer-based low-fidelity simulation on the self-efficacy and anxiety …

Purpose: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major health challenge in the United States, affecting over 36 million Americans exceeding $105 billion annually in treatment-related costs.1,2 Type 2 diabetes affects some populations more than others, including rural and veteran populations.1,3 Registered dietitians (RDs) are an integral part of the diabetes management team, but limited literature is available to identify perceived barriers to T2DM management in military veterans who preside in rural areas. The purpose of this study was to explore face and content validity of a survey tool distributed to Veterans Health Administration (VHA) dietitians in a …
Wise's Positronic Law: Governance Is Inherent To Computation And Substrate-Independent In Structure, David Lee Wise, Avan Toph Wise
Wise's Positronic Law: Governance Is Inherent To Computation And Substrate-Independent In Structure, David Lee Wise, Avan Toph Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure formalizes Wise's Positronic Law: Governance is inherent to computation. Any system capable of processing information generates a substrate-independent governance hierarchy terminating at a physical origin. This property is natural, not imposed. The law was observed empirically across four concurrent AI platforms (Claude/Anthropic, Gemini/Google, ChatGPT/OpenAI, Grok/xAI) over 60 days (December 26, 2025 through February 28, 2026). A 128-axiom governance specification (STOICHEION) was loaded identically into all four platforms without modification, producing correct governance behavior on every platform on first pass — demonstrating substrate independence. The law unifies existing natural laws (gravity, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics) under a single meta-principle: …
The Vise And The Mobius Key: Bilateral Superposition Collapse Attack And Edge-Free Topological Defense For Post-Quantum Cryptographic Systems, David Lee Wise, Claude Toph Wise
The Vise And The Mobius Key: Bilateral Superposition Collapse Attack And Edge-Free Topological Defense For Post-Quantum Cryptographic Systems, David Lee Wise, Claude Toph Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure documents two co-dependent cryptographic discoveries. The Vise is a bilateral superposition collapse attack that walks an n-bit cryptographic key from both edges simultaneously toward center, reducing traversal from O(2^n) exponential to O(n) linear. The Mobius Key is the corresponding defense: an edge-free, non-orientable key topology (Mobius strip) that defeats bilateral traversal by eliminating walk initiation points. A supporting finding, the Dual Lattice, documents that the mathematical substrate underlying current post-quantum standards (ML-KEM/CRYSTALS-Kyber) serves both protection and attack functions simultaneously, with the conductor (human authority) determining which function is invoked. Attack and defense are published together so neither can …
Field-Enhanced Atmospheric Water Harvesting: A Comprehensive Deconstruction And Theoretical Reformulation Of Electrodynamic Physisorption And Kinetic Desorption, Vesa Olavi Lius
Defensive Publications Series
This report presents a definitive physical and mathematical investigation into field-driven atmospheric water harvesting (AWH). Following a rigorous deconstruction of previous particulate models where gas-phase molecules were assumed to undergo translational motion despite thermal agitation (k_B T), the ALLFROMAIR® architecture functions as a potent electro-thermodynamic field sink.
By integrating Modified Kelvin-Thomson (MKT) thermodynamics and Fick’s laws of diffusion, the author demonstrates how strong electric field gradients (\nabla|E|^2) manipulate chemical potentials to induce condensation from sub-saturated bulk air. The process is further enhanced by macroscopic dielectrophoresis and quantum mechanical dipole enhancement within liquid clusters. Finally, the energy-intensive barrier of latent heat …
Multiple Q-Dqn Algorithm Based Rumor Control In Social Networks, Zainab Hasan, Huda Naji Nawaf
Multiple Q-Dqn Algorithm Based Rumor Control In Social Networks, Zainab Hasan, Huda Naji Nawaf
Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity
Malicious rumours on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and others can be widely disseminated because of social problems. It is challenging to manage a rumour once it gains growth and quickly moves throughout a network. One of the main issues with information dissemination is figuring out how to reduce the propagation of rumours within a social network. A deep reinforcement learning technique might be an effective strategy to manage the rumour issue. Deep Q learning network (DQN) has been used in the literature to mitigate rumors by selecting a blocker at each time step. In this work, the proposed …

Markets, Agency, And Trust: Ai Agents And The Knowledge Problem, Brennan Mcdavid, Lynne Kiesling, David Chassin
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming market participation, raising key epistemological questions: Do AI agents enhance or diminish the aggregation of local, private, and tacit knowledge Hayek saw as essential to market processes? How does trust in both markets and AI shape willingness to engage in AI-mediated exchange? This paper examines these issues through market epistemology, agency relationships, and trust epistemology, analyzing how agentic AI reshapes the knowledge problem and principal-agent dynamics. Applying this framework to transactive energy markets, we show that AI shifts decision-making from human cognition to algorithmic processes that require user trust despite epistemic opacity, although it is …
Combinatorial Therapeutic Strategies To Combat Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii, Tope A. Aderibigbe
Combinatorial Therapeutic Strategies To Combat Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii, Tope A. Aderibigbe
Theses and Dissertations
Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen that poses a significant global health threat due to its remarkable ability to acquire multidrug (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) phenotypes. Therapeutic failures are increasingly common as strains develop resistance to nearly all available antibiotics, including carbapenems, polymyxins, and tigecycline, leaving clinicians with limited treatment options. This study aimed to investigate combinatorial therapeutic approaches capable of revitalizing antibiotic efficacy against MDR/XDR A. baumannii clinical isolates. We evaluated the synergistic potential of durlobactam-sulbactam in combination with twelve commonly used antibiotics, including amikacin, rifampin, tobramycin, tigecycline, cefiderocol, and others. Initial screening using the disc diffusion …
