Multimodal Thermal And Mechanical Characterization Of Cryopreservation Effects In Biological Cells, Subhrajyoti Sourav Kumar Kundu Mar 2026

Multimodal Thermal And Mechanical Characterization Of Cryopreservation Effects In Biological Cells, Subhrajyoti Sourav Kumar Kundu

LSU Master's Theses

Cryopreservation is critical for long-term storage of cells, tissues, organs, and reproductive cells in medicine, biotechnology, and conservation. However, its success is limited by ice formation and cryoinjury, prompting extensive research into analytical tools for understanding and improving cryopreservation outcomes. We outline the principles of each technique and how they are used to detect key thermal and physical events such as ice nucleation, vitrification, devitrification, and cryoinjury. DSC enables quantitative thermal characterization including critical cooling/warming rates (ranging from 1-200°C/min for various systems) and glass transition temperatures. Cryomicroscopy provides direct real time visualization of ice crystal dynamics, distinguishing intracellular versus extracellular …

Molecular Origins Of Non-Frozen Water In Polyelectrolyte Brushes, Ali Dhinojwala, Saveen Jayaweera, Md Golam Kibria, George Mallinos

University Research

Polyelectrolyte brushes (PEBs) are promising coatings for reducing ice adhesion and regulating water freezing at interfaces, yet direct measurements of nonfrozen water retention at subzero temperatures remain scarce. Here, we investigate the freezing behavior of water confined in poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium) (PMETA) brushes with chloride, iodide, and sulfate counterions using a custom-built low-temperature attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy system. Furthermore, we quantify the fraction of water that was present within the brush that does not freeze as well as the changes in polymer volume fraction within the brush as a function of temperature. Spectroscopic analysis of water vibrational modes reveals that PMETA …

Strategic Theory And Clausewitz’S Trinitarian Test, Lukas Milevski Mar 2026

Strategic Theory And Clausewitz’S Trinitarian Test, Lukas Milevski

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Carl von Clausewitz’s trinity represents a qualitative test for strategy in both theory and practice. With the trinity, Clausewitz transforms competing influences into a mark of theoretical quality. Synthesizing several translations of Clausewitz’s On War and interpretations by experts such as Hew Strachan, Antulio J. Echevarria II, and Frank G. Hoffman, this article suggests that Clausewitz believed that good theory encompasses and accounts for all fundamental forces of war, whereas bad theory emphasizes the extremes of one force. The trinity compels mandatory considerations for students of theory, war planners, and practitioners.

Building A Better Landscape For Research Dissemination, Scott Horowitz Mar 2026

Building A Better Landscape For Research Dissemination, Scott Horowitz

Chemistry and Biochemistry: Faculty Scholarship

Let’s take a moment to think about where we’ve come to in scientific publishing. Once upon a time, journals and their publishers played an absolutely critical role in science’s growth and successes.  Many journal publishers are for-profit enterprises, and they still want to make profits even if they no longer serve an important purpose. By controlling the information, they can still force people to pay for services that are obsolete and manipulate the system in ways that stymie progress to maintain their market. Open access did not have the power to change this. Altogether, things are in bad shape. I …

Graph Labelings And Structures, Sumsets, And The Connections Between Them, Runze Wang Mar 2026

Graph Labelings And Structures, Sumsets, And The Connections Between Them, Runze Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The study of graph labelings and structures is a vital facet of graph theory, while the study of sumsets plays a central role in additive combinatorics. There are four chapters in this dissertation: Chapter 1 is an introduction, Chapter 2 is about graph labelings and structures, Chapter 3 is about sumsets, and Chapter 4 is about the connections between graph labelings and sumsets. In Chapter 2, we define the \emph{$(m,1)$-edge coloring game}, alternatively played by Maker and Breaker on a graph with a set of colors. Maker colors $m$ edges on each turn, but Breaker only colors one edge on …

Fluorescent Biosensor-Guided Engineering Of Enzyme Cascades For Electrochemical Applications, Nathan J. Ricks, Monica Brachi, Fnu Arun, Egor Baiarashov, Shelley D. Minteer, Ming C. Hammond

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Substrate channeling is a strategy for enhancing flux and yield in enzymatic cascades and is increasingly relevant for applications in biocatalysis, biotechnology, and bioelectrochemical systems. However, efforts to engineer channeling are limited by the lack of high-throughput methods to evaluate and optimize channeling efficiency. Here, we present a fluorescence-based screening assay to rapidly assess substrate channeling in a model system involving fumarase and malate dehydrogenase, two sequential enzymes from the Krebs cycle. By expressing genetic fusions in Escherichia coli, quantifying intermediate (malate) and product (NADH) formation in lysate using orthogonal fluorescent readouts, and comparing product-to-intermediate ratios, we screened a library …

Scalable Monitoring Of Image And Video Quality Across Distributed Devices, Peijie Li, Ryan Chan Mar 2026

Scalable Monitoring Of Image And Video Quality Across Distributed Devices, Peijie Li, Ryan Chan

Defensive Publications Series

Conventional image and video quality monitoring requires the transmission of high-resolution telemetry or per-frame data to a central server for analysis, incurring significant computational overhead and network bandwidth. This disclosure describes techniques that enable scalable and automated monitoring of image quality (IQ) and video quality (VQ) on distributed devices. The techniques resolve the problem of blind spots that arise in offline-only evaluation and post-deployment performance by performing partial on-device aggregation and compression that yields substantial bandwidth efficiency. Quality regressions are proactively detected before public user complaints surface.

Using Paired Queer Literature To Foster Critical Literacy And Intersectionality, Ferial Pearson, Jennifer L. Lemke Mar 2026

Using Paired Queer Literature To Foster Critical Literacy And Intersectionality, Ferial Pearson, Jennifer L. Lemke

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

This article explores the use of paired queer literature as a tool for fostering critical literacy and intersectional understanding in K–12 educational settings. Grounded in the belief that literature should serve as both a mirror and a window for students (Bishop, 1990), the paper argues for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ narratives to challenge dominant heteronormative frameworks that pervade U.S. school culture. By pairing texts that reflect diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and intersecting social identities, educators can cultivate inclusive classrooms that affirm all students’ experiences. The paper provides a framework for selecting high-quality, developmentally appropriate LGBTQ+ texts across grade levels …

Knapsack Based Selection Of Scan Flip-Flops For Dynamic Voltage Reduction, Vishant Gotra, Prateek Pendyala Mar 2026

Knapsack Based Selection Of Scan Flip-Flops For Dynamic Voltage Reduction, Vishant Gotra, Prateek Pendyala

Defensive Publications Series

Dynamic voltage drop during scan-shift operations serves as a prominent cause of yield loss in advanced semiconductor nodes. This occurs when large numbers of flip-flops toggle simultaneously, creating a spike in current demand that results in localized voltage droops. These droops lead functional chips to fail manufacturing tests, resulting in false failures. Standard mitigation methods (e.g., reducing clock frequency or applying heuristic gating) provide a means of managing these voltage drops but often increase testing duration or lack a provable mathematical basis.

A spatial optimization framework is disclosed for selecting flip-flops for output gating. The chip floorplan is partitioned into …

Enhancing Low-Light And Noisy Images Using Gaussian Denoising And Clahe (Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization)., Daniel Adesoji Mar 2026

Enhancing Low-Light And Noisy Images Using Gaussian Denoising And Clahe (Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization)., Daniel Adesoji

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

In digital imaging Low light image improvement is a crucial issue, with applications in medical imaging, surveillance and digital imaging. Images captured under substandard illumination usually appear dark and noisy: contrast is lower, hiding crucial details, while ISO (international Organization for Standardization) settings introduce grainy noise that devalue quality. These issues make images a problem for both human interpretation and automated vision system.

Traditional improvement methods such as histogram equalization and Retinex -based techniques enhance brightness but usually cause artifacts to boost noise. Deep learning approaches achieve strong results but require large datasets, heavy computation, and may fail to …

Main-Chain Ion-Pair Polybenzimidazole Membranes Enabling Reduced-Temperature Ht-Pemfc Operation (Down To 120°C), Huina Lin, Brian C. Benicewicz

Faculty Publications

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are promising for clean and efficient energy conversion across diverse applications. High-temperature PEM fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) using phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) can operate up to 200°C, but at lower temperatures, water-induced PA loss often leads to performance degradation and reduced durability. In this work, we present a new class of main-chain ion-pair PBI membranes by integrating the imidazolium-biphosphate ion-pair units directly into the PBI backbone. This design results in membranes with high acid content, stronger acid-polymer interactions and stabilized acid retention. In single-cell tests, the Im+-PBI15-3 wt.% exhibits peak power densities …

Generation Of Inner Core Anisotropy By Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Of Iron Crystals, Prajna Paramita Das, Bruce Buffett, Daniel A. Frost Mar 2026

Generation Of Inner Core Anisotropy By Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Of Iron Crystals, Prajna Paramita Das, Bruce Buffett, Daniel A. Frost

Faculty Publications

Seismic anisotropy in the Earth’s inner core refers to the observation that seismic waves travel faster along the Earth’s rotation axis than in the equatorial plane, a feature inferred from decades of global seismological observations. This directional dependence of wave speeds provides important clues about the structure, composition and dynamics of the inner core. Here we explore a coupled thermo-mechanical mechanism for the generation of inner core anisotropy, focusing on the effects of anisotropic thermal conductivity in iron crystals as the inner core cools. We propose that the higher thermal conductivity of iron along the crystallographic c-axis compared with …

Factors For Patient Trust And Acceptance Of Medical Artificial Intelligence, Ana Bracic, Kayte Spector-Bagdady, Sophie Towle, Rina Zhang, Cornelius A. James, Nicholson W. Price Ii

Articles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in clinical care, but widespread adoption requires patient trust. Trust may be enhanced through systemic governance mechanisms or frontline clinicians providing a human in the loop for AI oversight. However, it is unclear how different approaches specifically influence patient trust in the use of medical AI. The objective is to determine the extent to which patient trust in and choice of medical scenarios involving AI are associated with governance mechanisms, clinician presence, performance, and data quality.

Do Emotions Matter In Ai? The Mediating Role Of Emotional Response Between Perceived Risk And Trust, Areej Babiker, Mohamed Basel Almourad, Sameha Alshakhsi, Magnus Liebherr, Raian Ali

All Works

Research shows that trust in AI is influenced by socio-ethical considerations, technical features of AI systems, and user characteristics. Yet, the mediating role of emotional response between perceived risk and trust remains underexplored, particularly across different AI contexts. This cross-sectional vignette experiment design aims to explore the relationship between users' perceived potential risk, emotional response, and trust in AI, and examine how these relationships vary across different levels of automation and criticality. An online survey included a total of 639 participants including 316 from the UK and 323 from Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Participants rated their perceived risk, …

Top-View Method As A Robust Alternative For Contact Angle Measurement, Bi-Min Zhang Newby, Emmanuel Agyei Mar 2026

Top-View Method As A Robust Alternative For Contact Angle Measurement, Bi-Min Zhang Newby, Emmanuel Agyei

University Research

This study validates the top-view method for contact angle measurement, based on the spherical cap assumption, as a practical alternative to conventional side-view techniques. It is particularly useful when side-view imaging is challenging, such as on rough, deformable, irregular, or confined areas where baseline visibility, meridian clarity, or drop symmetry is compromised. To address these challenges, this study details the simultaneous acquisition of top and side-view images of sessile drops along with precise drop volume via drop mass measurements. The contact angles were then deduced from drop volume and contact area based on the spherical cap assumption. Contact angles of …

Privacy Preserving Anomaly Detection System For Der Solar Inverters, Tanzim Jim Hassan, Prakash Ranganathan Mar 2026

Privacy Preserving Anomaly Detection System For Der Solar Inverters, Tanzim Jim Hassan, Prakash Ranganathan

Graduate Research Achievement Day Posters

Reliable operation of solar inverters depends on maintaining a stable frequency. Recent cyber attacks on solar DERs are concerning and increase the likelihood of such stealthy attacks leading to anomalies in DER. Therefore, a robust anomaly detection system (ADS) is crucial for solar inverters used in distributed energy resources (DERs), enabling timely detection and correction of frequency anomalies. Additionally, preserving data privacy is essential for the security and reliability of the power grid. This paper proposes a privacy-preserving anomaly detection system (PP-ADS) based on a multi-stage hybrid machine learning (MSHML) model specifically designed for solar inverter data in DER environments. …

Interfacial Structural Entropy (Ise): A Statistical Descriptor That Links Distributed Fluid Microstructures And Interfacial Properties, Zhu Jiahua, Mu Liwen, Ji Tuo, Ye Wenkai

University Research

Fluids at the nano/microscopic interface, particularly when influenced by external fields, exhibit significant variations in microstructures, resulting in complex properties that differ markedly from those of single molecules and bulk fluids. The diversity in microstructures leads to unique interfacial transport and reaction phenomena. Notably, the microstructure is a group of molecular clusters with different configurations distributed at the interface in a balanced state, yet the governing factors that determine the cluster structure and their distribution remain to be understood. Herein, we introduce interfacial structural entropy (ISE) as a metric to capture the combined effects of solid surfaces and external fields …
