Pre-Service Teachers’ Development Of Four C Skills In Early Field Experiences Through Reflective Writing, Weihsuan Lo, Deborah Romero Aug 2025

Pre-Service Teachers’ Development Of Four C Skills In Early Field Experiences Through Reflective Writing, Weihsuan Lo, Deborah Romero

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

This longitudinal trend research study (Creswell & Guetterman, 2019) investigates how pre-service teachers (PSTs) in a K-12 licensure program that includes a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) added endorsement develop the 4Cs (creative thinking, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration) through reflective writing during early field experiences. The study involved five PSTs who submitted three reflective journals during the 2020-2021 school year and nine PSTs who participated in an online virtual focus group. Compared to the 2019-2020 school year, where PSTs observed in-person classes, the shift to online learning in 2020-2021 resulted in maintained Analytic skills (M = 39.40) and increased …

Understanding Hispanic Cultural Strengths Through Parents’ Voices: Insights For Interdisciplinary School Personnel, David Moran, Johana Rocha, Kristy Carlisle

Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration

Examining the strengths of Hispanic cultural values among K-12 school students is a generally understudied concept, and from their parents’ perspective specifically. This study sought to take a qualitative approach toward the exploration of Hispanic parents’ perspectives on how their cultural values promote strengths within their school-aged children. Hispanic parents (N = 8) participated in bilingual (i.e., Spanish and English) focus groups, with the results providing content that can inform culturally responsive prevention and intervention strategies to support the roles of interdisciplinary school personnel who regularly interact with the children. Findings pointed to (a) interaction with peers and school …

Book Review: Jonathan Gienapp, Against Constitutional Originalism: A Historical Critique, Timothy Smith Aug 2025

Book Review: Jonathan Gienapp, Against Constitutional Originalism: A Historical Critique, Timothy Smith

ConLawNOW

This essay reviews the new book, Against Constitutional Originalism by Professor Jonathan Gienapp. It shows how this important book complicates the legal theory of originalism and its understanding of the Constitution. Gienapp convincingly shows that Founding-era Americans had a very different understanding of the nature of constitutions—what they are and how they worked. The conception of the Constitution that feels natural to modern Americans actually developed gradually in the decades and centuries after the Founding and was not the original meaning. Gienapp contends that this creates foundational problems for the originalist approach to Constitutional interpretation. It exposes the fundamental misunderstanding …

Managing Covid-19-Related Stigma In Border Trade Communities: A Qualitative Study In Mae Hong Son, Thailand, Siwaporn Mahathamnuchock

Journal of Health Research

Background: In the border trade communities of Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand, misinformation and fear surrounding COVID-19 led to increased discrimination.

Method: This study aims to: (1) examine the different forms of stigma, (2) understand how affected individuals manage and cope with stigma, and (3) investigate community-based interventions to reduce stigma in border regions. An interpretative paradigm was used in a qualitative research design. A total of 18 participants—including local traders, housewives facing mobility challenges, a community leader, and healthcare workers were interviewed semi-structurally from August to December 2022. Key data patterns were identified by thematic analysis.

Results: There …

Yo Soy Minnesota: Bridging Health Equity Gaps With Culturally And Linguistically Inclusive Resources For Hispanics In Central Minnesota, Liz Damaris Vincente Berrios Aug 2025

Yo Soy Minnesota: Bridging Health Equity Gaps With Culturally And Linguistically Inclusive Resources For Hispanics In Central Minnesota, Liz Damaris Vincente Berrios

DNP Projects

Health disparities are preventable yet persist due to systemic inequities in social, economic, and healthcare structures. Rooted in historical injustices and social determinants of health, these disparities disproportionately impact minority communities, including Hispanics in Central Minnesota. Barriers such as limited English proficiency (LEP), provider biases, and inadequate health literacy further exacerbate inequitable health outcomes. Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) offer a modifiable solution to mitigate these disparities by ensuring healthcare resources align with diverse beliefs, practices, and linguistic needs. This project focuses on CLAS as a modifiable factor affecting Hispanics in Central Minnesota and explores the impact of "Yo …

Understanding And Addressing Chronic Absenteeism: Interviewing Parents Of Chronically Absent Students, Patrick Stickley Aug 2025

Understanding And Addressing Chronic Absenteeism: Interviewing Parents Of Chronically Absent Students, Patrick Stickley

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Understanding and Addressing Chronic Absenteeism: Interviewing Parents of Chronically Absent Students The more any child is chronically absent from school, opportunities dwindle for growth academically, intellectually, and socially (Gottfried, 2014). The problem is finding long term solutions to chronic absenteeism. A large percentage of chronically absent students are from the marginalized Black and Latinx student groups, creating a dire social justice situation for those students and their communities (Allison et al., 2019). This purpose of this qualitative study was to find reasons for and suggestions to address the wicked problem of chronic absenteeism by interviewing parents of chronically absent students. …

A Quality Improvement Project Cultural Competency: A Project For Improving Culturally Competent Care Among Mental Health Providers, Lanre Olanrewaju Aug 2025

A Quality Improvement Project Cultural Competency: A Project For Improving Culturally Competent Care Among Mental Health Providers, Lanre Olanrewaju

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Cultural competence, knowledge, and awareness are essential for improving mental healthcare outcomes in diverse populations. Despite the need, the absence of structured cultural competence training contributes to reduced quality of care and health disparities. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to improve cultural awareness and knowledge among mental health providers at an outpatient clinic by implementing structured staff training. A needs assessment identified gaps in cultural competence knowledge, inconsistent practices, and limited provider confidence in addressing diverse patient needs. In the methodology, the model used to answer the PICOT question is Purnell’s Model, guided by a structured process …

Dyadic And Multiparty Turn-Taking In Two Deaf Preschool Classrooms, Savannah Tellander Aug 2025

Dyadic And Multiparty Turn-Taking In Two Deaf Preschool Classrooms, Savannah Tellander

Theses

Conversational turn-taking skills are needed to succeed in most conversational interactions. Timing of turn-taking is crucial for young deaf signers, who need early, accessible, and consistent input in a signed and/or spoken language. For deaf children who acquire a language in either modality, they must acquire appropriate turn-taking skills. Without these abilities, children may miss critical language input, and in a cascading effect–they may miss opportunities both for input (and thus new knowledge) and expressive language. In addition to documenting deaf children’s turn-taking skills across development, it is important to also document timing data for further understanding of cognitive language …

Artificial Ignorance: Understanding The Role Of Ai In Modern Agnotology, Amit Ray, Michael Nolan Aug 2025

Artificial Ignorance: Understanding The Role Of Ai In Modern Agnotology, Amit Ray, Michael Nolan

Articles

This paper explores the concept of agnotology, the deliberate production of ignorance, within the context of modern scientific endeavors, particularly in the corporate and technological sectors. It examines how industries use various tactics to manipulate public understanding of scientific issues, often to protect profits and limit liability. The rise of private sector funding and the increasing reliance on technologies like AI and machine learning have exacerbated this process by making scientific inquiry more opaque and less accountable. Ultimately, we argue that as knowledge production becomes more entangled with corporate interests and technological systems, traditional methods of oversight and regulation are …

Reimagining Read-Alouds: Fostering Critical Consciousness And Social Justice Through Children's Literature, Kylie Brigham Aug 2025

Reimagining Read-Alouds: Fostering Critical Consciousness And Social Justice Through Children's Literature, Kylie Brigham

Masters Projects

During this era of heightened political and social divides, it is more important than ever to provide elementary students with inclusive and socially conscious literacy instruction. While classroom read-alouds have been long valued for their impact on literacy development, they are often underutilized as tools for fostering student identity, empathy, and social justice. This project, grounded in the frameworks of critical literacy, culturally responsive pedagogy, and Frierian theory, positions the read-aloud as a powerful entry point for critical and age-appropriate conversations about social issues, representation, and power.

Research has shown that many educators lack the training, tools, and confidence to …

Explicit Instruction’S Role In Phonemic Awareness And Phonics In Early Childhood Education, Sydney J. Fisher Aug 2025

Explicit Instruction’S Role In Phonemic Awareness And Phonics In Early Childhood Education, Sydney J. Fisher

Masters Projects

Research consistently demonstrated the impact that explicit instruction has on young children’s acquisition of phonemic awareness and phonics skills, critical foundations for later reading success. These skills are linked to achievement in reading in the upper elementary grades and beyond. Children reading below often face challenges across subject areas, and low literacy levels can limit meaningful participation in the community. This project examines research on developing phonemic awareness and phonics skills. With proper training and knowledge, teachers can improve student outcomes in these areas. However, teacher preparation programs and professional development does not adequately address these skills and how to …

Curriculum Accommodations, Modifications, And Differentiation Strategies: Equipping Teachers In Adapting Curriculum To Meet The Diverse Needs Of All Learners, Rachael Van Huis Aug 2025

Curriculum Accommodations, Modifications, And Differentiation Strategies: Equipping Teachers In Adapting Curriculum To Meet The Diverse Needs Of All Learners, Rachael Van Huis

Masters Projects

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) supports a free and appropriate public education for all students, yet many students with disabilities are not properly served in the K-12 public school setting. Teachers remain largely unequipped in providing appropriate educational experiences for students with complex learning needs, including the provision of academic accommodations and modifications. As a result, students with disabilities continue to be placed in segregated, alternative learning settings that hinder their academic progress, social connectedness, and ability to learn within their least restrictive environment alongside typically developing peers. This project aims to support both general and special education …

The Need For Updated Curriculum, Krahseeva N. Hugmeyer-Walsh Aug 2025

The Need For Updated Curriculum, Krahseeva N. Hugmeyer-Walsh

Masters Projects

The modern world requires a workforce equipped with diverse, adaptable skills, yet many students remain unprepared due to outdated curriculum models that no longer align with current societal and professional demands. This project explores the growing disconnect between traditional educational systems and the skills needed in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world. Current curricula often emphasize theoretical knowledge over practical application, leaving students ill-equipped to navigate real-world challenges. This project also proposes the development of a modernized secondary-level curriculum unit that prioritizes critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, ethics, and technological literacy. The proposed unit is designed to reflect student interests, promote engagement, and …

Effective Strategies For Mitigating Skills Gaps Postpandemic In The Automotive Industry, Neil Shah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Inadequate approaches to filling employee skill gaps can seriously weaken workforce stability and organizational performance. Canadian automotive sector leaders are concerned about the risk of persistent employment shortages, high employee turnover, and decreased productivity. Grounded in Alderfer's existence, relatedness, and growth theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to identify and explore the strategies employed by Canadian auto manufacturers to address skill shortages in their workforce in the wake of the pandemic and subsequent digitalization. Six senior executives from Canadian auto manufacturers who led successful skill-development and retention initiatives participated in semistructured interviews, complemented by a review of …

Educational Leaders’ Perceptions Of Disproportionality In The Identification Of Elementary Gifted Students, Vincent Corrigan Aug 2025

Educational Leaders’ Perceptions Of Disproportionality In The Identification Of Elementary Gifted Students, Vincent Corrigan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite years of research on best practices in gifted program identification, racially diverse, linguistically diverse, and socioeconomically disadvantaged student populations continue to be underrepresented in elementary gifted programs. Guided by Renzulli’s three-ring conception of giftedness and practical system for identifying gifted and talented students, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore local educational leaders’ perceptions of disproportionality in the identification of students for elementary gifted programs in a large public school system in the Eastern United States. For this basic qualitative design, data were collected through semistructured interviews with 18 educational leaders from the local elementary principal population. …

Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien Aug 2025

Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien

Masters Projects

Discussion-based pedagogy provides students with opportunities to practice collaborative and critical thinking skills that have proven impactful on reading and writing scores, interpersonal communication skills, and civic engagement. However, inexperienced discussion facilitators—as well as instructors who may not have clear purposes or objectives for discussion in their classrooms—may not be familiar with best practices and strategies for structuring rigorous, equitable, and engaging student talk. This project begins by investigating potential factors contributing to students' lack of interpersonal skills in the classroom, and ultimately identifies discussion-based pedagogy as a key solution. A theoretical basis for the merits of discursive learning is …
