A Framework Of Social Media Messages For Crisis And Risk Communication: A Study Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nic Depaula, Loni Hagen, Stiven Roytman, Deaundre Dyson, Dana Alnahass, Mihir Patel, Alex B. Hill Jan 2022

A Framework Of Social Media Messages For Crisis And Risk Communication: A Study Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nic Depaula, Loni Hagen, Stiven Roytman, Deaundre Dyson, Dana Alnahass, Mihir Patel, Alex B. Hill

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Social media are important channels for crisis and risk communication by government agencies. However, existing frameworks for studying these messages use loose and inconsistent terminology, making it difficult to build on this research and understand how message features impact message diffusion. In this study, we provide a framework based on textual and media dimensions of messages for improved analysis of social media crisis and risk communication. We apply the framework to a sample of Twitter posts from United States local, state and federal public health agencies during a year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Results show reasonable reliability levels for coding …

Sign Language Interpreter-Mediated Qualitative Interview With Deaf Participants In Ghana: Some Methodological Reflections For Practice, Stephen Baffour Adjei, Sarah Tara Sam, Frank Owusu Sekyere, Philip Boateng Jan 2022

Sign Language Interpreter-Mediated Qualitative Interview With Deaf Participants In Ghana: Some Methodological Reflections For Practice, Stephen Baffour Adjei, Sarah Tara Sam, Frank Owusu Sekyere, Philip Boateng

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research is adventurous and creative, and committed to understanding unique human experiences in specific cultural ecologies. Qualitative interviewing with Deaf participants is far more challenging for hearing researchers who do not understand sign language, and for this reason such interactions may require the use of a sign language interpreter to facilitate the interview process. However, the quality of sign language interpreter-mediated interactions is likely to be compromised due to omissions, oversights, misinterpretations or additions that may occur during translation. An unthoughtful and poor interpretation of a communicative event by a sign language interpreter during a qualitative interview with Deaf …

The “Oil And Wine” Of A Better Kind Of Politics, Cesare Sposetti Sj Jan 2022

The “Oil And Wine” Of A Better Kind Of Politics, Cesare Sposetti Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This essay aims to show how the rise of populist phenomena is a contemporary “sign of the times” that the Catholic Church must attend to carefully, in order to respond adequately while drawing from the rich treasure of her social teaching, with a particular attention to Pope Francis’ last Encyclical Fratelli tutti. The application of such an approach to the current Italian context proposes a concrete analysis of and a Catholic response to populism.

Conflict Of Allegiance: Professional Development Challenges In Transforming Science Teachers' Identities And Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis Jan 2022

Conflict Of Allegiance: Professional Development Challenges In Transforming Science Teachers' Identities And Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Case studies of two biology teachers, Cathy and David, from the same minority-majority, urban U.S. high school, provide insights into their instructional practices while they engaged in long-term professional development (PD). Findings suggest why science teachers engaged with PD may, or may not, adopt more adaptive pedagogical approaches in the service of reform-based teaching. Gee’s institution- and affinity-identity constructs were used as analytic lenses regarding teachers’ perceptions of teaching, learning, and agency in the dual contexts of their school’s institutional environment and PD community. Over time, Cathy adopted more inquiry-based instructional practices she learned through PD seminars in building a …

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim Jan 2022

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

In Morocco, debates over English language instruction have marginalized poetry as a distinct literary genre. The shortage of poetry events arguably makes poetry teaching both daunting and intimidating. Besides fostering trust, memorization, and empathy, helping students develop a penchant for English language, as well as humanity, poetry, and narrative poetry, in particular, proffers teachers ample opportunities to fully engage students in the learning process. Not only does it awaken their senses and make them establish connections but leads them to think in a critical way about the world around them. In this paper, the teaching of narrative poetry through the …

First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh Jan 2022

First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

As institutions look to improve student retention through first-year experience (FYE) courses, some have implemented courses targeted specifically to the international population. A quantitative comparison of international students who took an FYE course with international students who did not take an FYE course was completed to analyze the differences in retention and graduation rates between the two groups. International freshmen who participated in the FYE course were retained and graduated at significantly higher rates than international freshmen who did not take the course. Aspects of the course that likely led to student retention and graduation are discussed.

The Rice Theory Of Culture, Thomas Talhelm Jan 2022

The Rice Theory Of Culture, Thomas Talhelm

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

The rice theory of culture is the idea that rice farming societies developed into more interdependent, tight cultures in response to the demands of the plant. Farming in general is an interdependent subsistence style, but traditional paddy rice farming was starkly different from other major crops like wheat, corn, and potatoes. Paddy rice required twice as much labor per hectare as wheat farming. Farmers responded by creating customs to share labor. Paddy rice also depended on irrigation systems to flood and drain the fields. Once farmers controlled water, they now had to coordinate how much water each farmer got, when …

Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis Jan 2022

Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

In recent years, methodological and substantial progress has been made in the field of cross-cultural studies on implicit motives. We propose that cross-cultural studies on implicit motives are indispensable to understand universal and culture-specific variations in individuals’ mental processes and behavior. It is assumed that implicit motives represent the first motivational system to be shaped in a human being’s ontogeny and that they have far-reaching consequences for individuals’ development, their feelings and actions in everyday life across different cultural groups. Applying psychometrically sound measurements cross-culturally, researchers have revealed a number of universal relationships between implicit motives and psychological and behavioral …

Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha Jan 2022

Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha

Loyola Papers

This paper explores Johannine Mariology through an exegetical study of John 2:1–11 and John 19:25–27, highlighting Mary’s evolving role within the Fourth Gospel. It examines the symbolic and theological significance of Mary as “woman,” linking her to the figure of Zion and the new people of God. At Cana, she emerges as the first believer who mediates faith and points others to Jesus, while at the Cross, she is entrusted with a maternal role in the formation of the believing community. The study underscores Mary’s discipleship, faith, and representative function within the Johannine vision of salvation history.

Fusing Approaches In Educational Research: Data Collection And Data Analysis In Phenomenological Research, Pedro P. Aguas Jan 2022

Fusing Approaches In Educational Research: Data Collection And Data Analysis In Phenomenological Research, Pedro P. Aguas

The Qualitative Report

One of the aims of human sciences seeks to understand the essences and meanings of human experiences by focusing on philosophical, epistemological, methodological, and linguistic principles through transcendental phenomenology and hermeneutics, two philosophies and research methodologies central to qualitative research. Therefore, fusing approaches provides a space where both epistemology and methodology within both traditions can merge to yield meaning and understanding, and at the same time, offer a new approach to dealing with data collection and data analysis without neglecting or distorting original leading concepts. Fusing approaches comes into being as the merging of overlapping and deferring epistemological, methodological, and …

Borders And Migration (Pols 31) Syllabus, Osman Balkan Jan 2022

Borders And Migration (Pols 31) Syllabus, Osman Balkan

Aydelotte Curricular Grants

This course offers an introduction to the causes and consequences of international migration and examines how various countries have responded to it. We begin by considering the myriad reasons why people move from one place to another and analyze the different strategies through which political authorities have tried to simultaneously facilitate and obstruct migratory flows. The tension between mobility and containment is a central feature of migration politics.
Our first set of readings offer a broad, historical overview of the relationship between states and migrants within the dynamics of global capitalism. Students will learn about patterns of regular and irregular …

Beyond Bake Sales: Environmental Justice Through Superfund Removal Actions, Clifford Villa

Faculty Scholarship

Few people outside of EPA seem to be aware of the existence of the Superfund removal program, a program through which millions of dollars are allocated through EPA’s ten regional offices each year for cleaning up contaminated sites that are not designated 'Superfund' sites. This essay will provide a basic introduction to the Superfund removal program and particularly encourage consideration of Superfund removals to address growing concerns for environmental justice. Part II examines the legal authorities and limitations of the Superfund removal program. Part III provides examples of removal actions in environmental justice communities across the country. Part IV considers …

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz

Psychology Honors Papers

The present study investigated the relationship between social media posting behavior and sleep quality in a population of college students (N = 30) over 5 nights. Sleep duration and number of nightly disruptions were used to measure sleep quality using a smartphone app, SleepScore, that participants downloaded prior to the study. Every day after recording their sleep participants were presented with a “prompt word” and asked to make a post related to their respective prompt on the anonymous social media network Yik-Yak. A content analysis was then performed with the assistance of an independent coder in order to categorize the …

The Mushroom, The Frog, And The Rainbow Of Desire: A Participatory-Psychedelic Spiritual Emergence, Gregg Lahood Jan 2022

The Mushroom, The Frog, And The Rainbow Of Desire: A Participatory-Psychedelic Spiritual Emergence, Gregg Lahood

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This article will explore a spiritual emergency through a myth or fairy tale that emerged at the same time I had a frightening brush with death. Two days before the accident I had ingested psilocybin mushrooms. Michael Washburn, among other transpersonal theorists, will be used to interpret, amplify and re-frame this potential ‘psychotic episode’ with ‘borderline features’ into something more, perhaps, on the threshold of a shamanic initiation in a liminal state. The mythic sequence in my story anticipates the death-rebirth (perinatal pattern) and evolution of consciousness in the LSD research of Stanislav Grof; an evolution given epic participatory elucidation …

How Perception Meets Hermeneutics: An Empirical Investigation Of Tasseography, Elizabeth Avetisian Jan 2022

How Perception Meets Hermeneutics: An Empirical Investigation Of Tasseography, Elizabeth Avetisian

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Tasseography is a divination method to provide insight about the seeker’s past, present, or future life by interpreting patterns in the dregs of a liquid. Although it has been practiced with coffee throughout Europe and Middle East, particularly among women, no known studies exist on the seer’s perceptual process of the ambiguous patterns or how the roles of the seeker and seer, symbols, ritual, and cultural epistemology shape the divinatory hermeneutics. This study focused on the Armenian coffee divination ritual, asking what are the processes and conditions that enable experienced cup readers to obtain divinatory insight in tasseography? Two seekers …

Cultural Wealth: A Legacy To Actualize College Goals And Aspirations For Black First-Generation College Students From African Or Caribbean Immigrant Homes, Amina Gordon Jan 2022

Cultural Wealth: A Legacy To Actualize College Goals And Aspirations For Black First-Generation College Students From African Or Caribbean Immigrant Homes, Amina Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

National data reveals that college access is most challenging for traditionally underrepresented students, including minoritized, first-generation college attendees and students from low-income families (Gibbons & Borders, 2010). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how Black first-generation college students (FGCS) from African or Caribbean immigrant families capitalized on Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth (CCW) to create and pursue college goals and aspirations. Participants were recent graduates from a suburban school district outside of the metropolitan area on the east coast and who were enrolled in their first or second year in college. The researcher answered the main research …

Invisible Doesn't Mean Inactive: Perspectives And Recommendations Of An Arabic Speaking Community On Parental Involvement And Cultural Responsiveness, Aziz Elabida Jan 2022

Invisible Doesn't Mean Inactive: Perspectives And Recommendations Of An Arabic Speaking Community On Parental Involvement And Cultural Responsiveness, Aziz Elabida

Theses and Dissertations

An extensive body of research has established the positive impact that parental involvement has on student academic, social, and emotional performance and well-being. These benefits are, however, not enjoyed by all students due to a string of logistical, communicative, perceptual, and cultural obstacles. The purpose of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of parental involvement as perceived and practiced by Arabic speaking parents in American public schools. This research is guided by the six typologies of Epstein’s parental involvement model (1995, 2007, and 2012) and Khalifa’s four strands of culturally responsive school leadership (2016). Through a descriptive single case …

The Lived Experiences Of Second-Generation Nigerian Male College Graduates On Educational Attainment: A Narrative Research Study, Anthony Seriki Jan 2022

The Lived Experiences Of Second-Generation Nigerian Male College Graduates On Educational Attainment: A Narrative Research Study, Anthony Seriki

Theses and Dissertations

This narrative research study design was conducted to explore second-generation Nigerian males' perceptions of how family heritage influences college success. The streaming of immigrants from the continent of Africa has led to an influx of foreign-born Backs in schools in the United States. Many second-generation Nigerian youths in schools nationwide are from immigrant backgrounds, partly because of the streaming of immigration from the continent of Africa. The experiences in education from Black immigrant children from Africa, specifically Nigeria, have been understudied. This study captured the first-hand account of how second-generation Nigerian males navigated the United States educational system and how …

A Case Study: Determining Factors On Student Persistence In A Community College Spanish Program, Kristin Ea Peters Jan 2022

A Case Study: Determining Factors On Student Persistence In A Community College Spanish Program, Kristin Ea Peters

Theses and Dissertations

World language study exposes students to more than just language; they are also exposed to different cultures. After graduating, students will be exposed to different languages and cultures in the workforce, and they must be prepared. Students often leave their language of choice after the one or two semester course requirement; it takes more than those one or two courses for students to gain the cultural and linguistic skills needed to succeed. Institutions must start to convey the importance of those skills in order produce culturally aware and global students. Student placement, student motivation, and classroom pedagogy all contribute to …

No Family Left Behind: Nontraditional Methods Of Communication As A Tool For Equitable Family Engagement, Robin Ransom Jan 2022

No Family Left Behind: Nontraditional Methods Of Communication As A Tool For Equitable Family Engagement, Robin Ransom

Theses and Dissertations

Legislation outlined in ESSA (2018) pushes schools to address the needs of the diverse populations within the school community as well creating a place for equitable family engagement. This study focuses on the family rather than the parent. Due to changes in family dynamics it is necessary to incorporate not just the parent but all members of a student’s household who contribute to the academic, social, and emotional well-being. In light of the immediate halt to the educational arena as the world was faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, educators and administrators were forced to think of new ways to engage …

Controlling For Developmental Language Differences In Spanish-English Learners: A Comparison Of The Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test And Woodcock Muñoz Language Survey-Third Edition, Amanda Garcia Jan 2022

Controlling For Developmental Language Differences In Spanish-English Learners: A Comparison Of The Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test And Woodcock Muñoz Language Survey-Third Edition, Amanda Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in the vocabulary knowledge of Spanish-speaking English Learners (ELs) when controlling for developmental language norms. This research was essential given the multitude of literature indicating the connection between vocabulary skills and later academic success and the substantial achievement gaps between ELs and English Speakers (ESs). Considering the different normative standards in the Ortiz PVAT and WMLS III English, where the former includes bilingual, exposure-based norms, and the latter does not, this study evaluated the vocabulary knowledge of 27 Spanish-speaking ELs between the ages of 5 and 11 …
