Teaching Methods And Receptions, Server Revikovich Sheikhmambetov Jan 2022

Teaching Methods And Receptions, Server Revikovich Sheikhmambetov

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

This article discusses teaching methods in teaching Russian literature. The work pays special attention to the fact that each pedagogical technique is an expression of a certain teaching method. Each method should be related to the teaching method. The article also notes the importance of the choice of teaching methods and their purpose in the educational process. The choice of teaching methods is determined by a number of factors, first of all, the composition of knowledge that is contained in a given subject, the logic of the foundations of science being studied. And since the composition of knowledge, the content …

Addressing Big Data Variety Using An Automated Approach For Data Characterization, Georgios Vranopoulos, Nathan Clarke, Shirley Atkinson Jan 2022

Addressing Big Data Variety Using An Automated Approach For Data Characterization, Georgios Vranopoulos, Nathan Clarke, Shirley Atkinson

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

AbstractThe creation of new knowledge from manipulating and analysing existing knowledge is one of the primary objectives of any cognitive system. Most of the effort on Big Data research has been focussed upon Volume and Velocity, while Variety, “the ugly duckling” of Big Data, is often neglected and difficult to solve. A principal challenge with Variety is being able to understand and comprehend the data. This paper proposes and evaluates an automated approach for metadata identification and enrichment in describing Big Data. The paper focuses on the use of self-learning systems that will enable automatic compliance of data against regulatory …

Predicting Hospital Readmission For Campylobacteriosis From Electronic Health Records: A Machine Learning And Text Mining Perspective, Shang Ming Zhou, Ronan A. Lyons, Muhammad A. Rahman, Alexander Holborow, Sinead Brophy

School of Nursing and Midwifery

(1) Background: This study investigates influential risk factors for predicting 30-day readmission to hospital for Campylobacter infections (CI). (2) Methods: We linked general practitioner and hospital admission records of 13,006 patients with CI in Wales (1990–2015). An approach called TF-zR (term frequency-zRelevance) technique was presented to evaluates how relevant a clinical term is to a patient in a cohort characterized by coded health records. The zR is a supervised term-weighting metric to assign weight to a term based on relative frequencies of the term across different classes. Cost-sensitive classifier with swarm optimization and weighted subset learning was integrated to identify …

Led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the initiative taken by the Tibetan Buddhist monastic community to connect with western science and scientists presents a unique opportunity to understand the motivations and engagement behaviors that contribute to monastic science learning. In this study, we draw on quantitative data from two distinct surveys that track motivations and engagement behaviors related to science education among monastic students. The first survey was administered at one monastic university in 2018, and the second follow-up survey was completed by students at two monastic universities in 2019. These surveys assessed the reception of science education related …

Policy Effects On New York City Early Education Centers: Ecological Case Studies, Maria S. Mavrides Calderon Jan 2022

Policy Effects On New York City Early Education Centers: Ecological Case Studies, Maria S. Mavrides Calderon

Theses and Dissertations

NYC’s universal Pre-K (PKFA) was implemented through New York Early Education Centers (NYCEECs) and public schools, without considering compensation parity across settings. This study investigates the impact of unequal compensation policies on the experiences of directors, teachers, and parents affiliated with NYCEECs, and how they compare or contrast with the policymakers’ discourse around those policies. While other studies have investigated the PKFA implementation (Akaba et al., 2019; Falk & Souto-Manning, 2020; Fuller & Leibovitz, 2021a; Reid et al., 2019), none have privileged the ecology of those working at and attending NYCEECs. Through critical policy analysis, this study utilized Bronfenbrenner's (1979) …

Flexible Facilitation: Coaching And Modelling To Support Inclusive Education, Danielle Lane, Sarah Semon, Nicholas Catania, Khalid M. Abu-Alghayth Phd Jan 2022

Flexible Facilitation: Coaching And Modelling To Support Inclusive Education, Danielle Lane, Sarah Semon, Nicholas Catania, Khalid M. Abu-Alghayth Phd

The Qualitative Report

The practices of education, such as separate and resource placements, pull-out services, scripted intervention programmes, an emphasis on diagnoses, and behaviorist discipline practices, are not conducive to the goals of inclusive education. This study demonstrates how one instructional coach worked to disrupt traditional special education practices and guide special educators towards the use of more effective research-based instructional strategies and collaborative practices to promote inclusion. Using Robert Stake’s intrinsic case study methodology, we explored the perceived roles of coaching and modelling to promote inclusion through the lens of one coach who modelled methods for the special education teachers in multiple …

Exploring Language And Cultural Disconnects: Learning From Bsw Students And Faculty Within An English As A Medium Of Instruction Environment, Beverly A. Wagner

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community

English as the medium of instruction (EMI) is a growing global phenomenon that impacts social work educators who are teaching in second-language environments. This study used action research to explore barriers to EMI learning and teaching among students and faculty in a BSW program at a United Arab Emirates (UAE) college. Cognitive load theory provided a lens to understand these obstacles. Participants included five students and seven faculty. Findings indicated communication deficits among students and faculty, which were further influenced by the cultural environment. This study contributes to an understanding of the obstacles encountered in social work programs that use …

Comment On Michael Kirby, 'India & Australia: A Neglected Legal Relationship And A Plan For Action', Theunis Roux Jan 2022

Comment On Michael Kirby, 'India & Australia: A Neglected Legal Relationship And A Plan For Action', Theunis Roux

National Law School Journal

Has much changed more than two decades after former Australian High Court Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG proposed his nine-point plan of action to solidify the legal relationship between India and Australia? This piece traces the evolution of that relationship from the time Kirby first envisioned a mutually beneficial legal partnership to the transformed landscape of the present day. After placing Kirby at the centre of initial efforts to reinvigorate the 'neglected relationship', this piece offers a structured explanation of how the association between India and Australia has progressed over the years. It presents a picture of how contemporary global …

India And Australia: A Neglected Legal Relationship, Michael Kirby Ac Cmg

National Law School Journal

Despite both being common law countries with some shared legal heritage, the legal relationship between India and Australia has not been adequately explored. Australia's legal system has strong links to that of England's Privy Council, and the Indian legal system also bears links to some English common law doctrines. There is no dearth of concept and legal theory that judges and lawyers in Australia and India can collaborate on. This article begins with the author's own experience as a judicial officer in the Court of Appeal in Australia where he invoked judicial precedents from other common law countries, including India, …

Ethnic Differences In Lbms Structure, Lisa M. Johnson Jan 2022

Ethnic Differences In Lbms Structure, Lisa M. Johnson

Faculty Publications

This poster reports on structural correlations between low back vowel merger/position and front lax vowel lowering/retraction (Low-Back-Merger Shift or LBMS). Based on analyses of word list recordings from two groups of Utah teens (Pacific Islanders and Euro Americans), I argue that the position of BOT affects the front vowels in the two ethnic groups differently: while the F1 of EA front vowels is inversely correlated with BOT F1, PI front vowels appear to be more sensitive to BOT F2. These results highlight the structural complexity of LBMS and the importance of recruiting ethnically diverse groups of participants for such studies.

"Nothing ‘Personal’ To Lose": Alice Notley’S “I” And The Poetics Of Encounter In Disobedience, Christina T. Baulch Jan 2022

"Nothing ‘Personal’ To Lose": Alice Notley’S “I” And The Poetics Of Encounter In Disobedience, Christina T. Baulch

Theses and Dissertations

Though the lyric-I has often been perceived as an isolated ego, Alice Notley's "I" in her long poem Disobedience (2001) necessitates plurality through what I call a "poetics of encounter." In response to the 1978 Language poetry manifesto "Aesthetic Tendency and the Politics of Poetry," and to the larger well-rehearsed debate about vocal homogeneity and persona centrism in poetry, this paper argues that Notley's poetics of encounter brings the "I" of Disobedience into continual and complex conversation with material history, politics, and mass culture, thus situating it within, and not sequestered from, the world and its mediation.

“Tea, With Roti And Butter, Mister?” An Examination Of A Single Phrase In A Sentence From Finnegans Wake, Sudarshan Ramani Jan 2022

“Tea, With Roti And Butter, Mister?” An Examination Of A Single Phrase In A Sentence From Finnegans Wake, Sudarshan Ramani

Living in Languages

My paper discusses issues of translation particularly in relation to the untranslatable as understood by Jacques Derrida in “Des tours de Babel.” A single sentence from Finnegans Wake by James Joyce: "cha kai rotty kai makkar, sahib" sheds light on the issues of polysemy in a novel that deliberately overturns assumptions about the English language. Finnegans Wake as can be seen in the study of this sentence, was composed in anticipation of a non-European reader and a non-European audience. Joyce in this instance is performing an act of translation, one which translates a sentence of Hindi (albeit grammatically suspect) in …

Perpetual Emergency: The Self, Translation And Border Crossing, Umar Nizarudeen Jan 2022

Perpetual Emergency: The Self, Translation And Border Crossing, Umar Nizarudeen

Living in Languages

In the contemporary cognitive militarism, which is fast gaining ground in terms of its popularity, self-narratives are sought to be pitted against the practice of translation. The `self’ in this sense is that which is produced as a result of a process of self-narration or autopoiesis. What is foregrounded in cognitive militarism is not poetic subjectivity, but rather an instrumental subjectivity in the form of auto narration and self-apprehension in the form of self-narratives.

Rewriting And Retranslation In Fernando Arrabal’S Exiled Cinematic Memory, John D. Sanderson Jan 2022

Rewriting And Retranslation In Fernando Arrabal’S Exiled Cinematic Memory, John D. Sanderson

Living in Languages

The rejection suffered in Spain by Fernando Arrabal’s cinematography, specifically by his films dealing with the Spanish Civil War, Viva la muerte (1971) and L’arbre de Guernica (1975), stands in contrast with the international appraisal received in France or the United States. The Spanish playwright and filmmaker, exiled in France since 1955, confronted with his cinematic memory the established historical master narrative in Spain both during Franco’s dictatorship and the newly born democracy, and experienced accordingly a fierce national critical backlash.

The fact that Arrabal wrote both film scripts in Spanish, based on his previous literary and theatrical work, had …

Documentation And Preservation Of Endangered Manuscripts Through Digital Archiving In North-Eastern States Of India, Dibanjyoti Buragohain, Manashjyoti Deka, Amit Kumar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The preservation and conservation of traditional manuscripts is an age old practice. But for the past two decades or so, preserving the endangered manuscripts through digitization has become the prime concern of governments so that such manuscripts can be kept safely for future generations as manuscripts are considered to be an important asset to know our culture and tradition better. The present study primarily highlights the conservation and archival policies adopted by the British Library to digitize the ancient manuscripts of the North-Eastern states of India. The analysis highlights that the state such as Mizoram, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh …

Cancel [© Opyright] Culture: A Legal Analysis Of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Tracy Reilly Jan 2022

Cancel [© Opyright] Culture: A Legal Analysis Of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Tracy Reilly

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

In this article, I present a combined legal and literary analysis of one of the most destructive themes in contemporary intellectual property scholarship: the putative death of the copyright author. For decades, the vast majority of scholars in all academic disciplines have widely accepted that the conceptual death of the author announced in 1967 by French literary theorist Roland Barthes is today a conclusively proven fact. This piece, however, offers a unique and unquestionably controversial challenge to such a purported denouement: it boldly, and not without trepidation, theorizes that the true goal of some anti-author scholars is the outright annihilation …

Tracking Sentiments Toward Fat Acceptance Over A Decade On Twitter, Sadie Bograd, Benjamin Chen, Ramakanth Kavuluru Jan 2022

Tracking Sentiments Toward Fat Acceptance Over A Decade On Twitter, Sadie Bograd, Benjamin Chen, Ramakanth Kavuluru

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

The fat acceptance (FA) movement aims to counteract weight stigma and discrimination against individuals who are overweight/obese. We developed a supervised neural network model to classify sentiment toward the FA movement in tweets and identify links between FA sentiment and various Twitter user characteristics. We collected any tweet containing either “fat acceptance” or “#fatacceptance” from 2010–2019 and obtained 48,974 unique tweets. We independently labeled 2000 of them and implemented/trained an Average stochastic gradient descent Weight-Dropped Long Short-Term Memory (AWD-LSTM) neural network that incorporates transfer learning from language modeling to automatically identify each tweet’s stance toward the FA movement. Our model …

Social And Emotional Needs Of Emergent Bilingual High School Students: Perspectives Of Teachers, School Counselors, And School Social Workers, Elizabeth Vera, Amy J. Heineke, Anna Schultes, Plamena Daskalova

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Thirty-three school professionals, including teachers, counselors, and social workers (70% female, 20% persons of color, 18% bilingual) shared their perceptions of the social and emotional experiences of emergent bilingual learners (EBLs) attending high schools in the Midwestern United States. In this pre-consultation data collection, themes were identified in qualitative data derived from six focus groups . Analyses revealed a variety of school and family influences tied to EBLs' social and emotional well-being, along with peer and individual factors. Participants recommended that schools should focus not only on instituting culturally-specific structures and initiatives to better support EBLs, but also intervene with …

Minorcan Population Of St. Augustine In The Spanish Census Of 1786, Philip D. Rasico

Florida Historical Quarterly

Nearly half a century ago the noted historian of Spanish colonial Florida, Joseph Byrne Lockey published a transcription, accompanied by a preface and notes, of the Spanish census of St. Augustine and its vicinity which was prepared in December 1786 by the Salamanca-educated Irish priest, Thomas Hassett. An incomplete draft of this document is in the East Florida Papers in the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress. Lockey’s translation of the draft is also incomplete; he omits the lengthy section which contains the largest and most ethnically-diverse sector of St. Augustine’s civilian population during the early years of the …

Twilight Of The Mocamo And Guale Aborigines As Portrayed In The 1695 Spanish Visitation, John H. Hann

Florida Historical Quarterly

The natives of Mocamo and Guale on the coasts of Georgia and northern Florida were the first with whom the French and then the Spaniards established steady contact in the 1560s and among the first to be missionized. Yet, as scholars have remarked, surprisingly little is known about these people during the historic period either archaeologically or historically. Only for the years 1597-1606 are there detailed published accounts of events in the Guale and Mocamo missions in the works of John Tate Lanning, Maynard Geiger, OFM, and Manuel Serrano y Sanz, and in Kathleen Deagan’s chapter on the eastern Timucua …

Language Interfaces In Adult Heritage Language Acquisition: A Study On Encoding Of Nominal Reference In Mandarin Chinese As A Heritage Language, Jing Jin, Sihui Echo Ke, John Chi-Kin Lee

Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Publications

According to the Interface Hypothesis in the field of bilingualism, the interface connecting a linguistic module with a language-external domain (e.g., syntax-discourse) will present prolonged difficulties for adult bilingual learners, as compared with the interface connecting language-internal modules (e.g., syntax-semantics). This study tested whether the Interface Hypothesis is applicable to the acquisition of Mandarin Chinese as a heritage language. An internet-based acceptability judgment task (AJT) was administered to 58 advanced and intermediate adult Chinese heritage speakers to collect data in accuracy and reaction time to investigate the adult heritage speakers’ mastery of referential nominal expressions regulated at the syntax-semantics and …
