Patients’ Perceptions And Knowledge Of Source Isolation For Multi-Resistant Organisms In An Australian Metropolitan Hospital: A Bedside Interview With Questionnaire Study, Alison Smith, Gillian Ray-Barruel
Patient Experience Journal
The aim of this study was to explore perceptions and knowledge of source isolation among hospitalised patients colonised or infected with multi-resistant organisms, to identify if information provided and delivery method are helpful and appropriate, and to identify areas for practice improvements. Purposive sampling was conducted. Between November 2019 and January 2020, bedside interviews with structured questionnaires (combining multiple-choice and free-text questions) were conducted with adult in-patients requiring isolation for multi-resistant organisms in a 180-bed metropolitan hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Data analysis included quantifying multiple-choice responses and thematic analysis of free-text responses. Thirty participants completed the interview questionnaire. Lack of …

Mystay – Development Of Nurse-Facilitated Condition-Specific Multimedia Resources To Facilitate Patient Participation In Postoperative Care, Jo Mcdonall, Anastasia F. Hutchinson, Natalie Heynesbergh, Bernice Redley, Richard De Steiger, Damien Khaw, Mari Botti
Patient Experience Journal
Improved postoperative outcomes and the global drive toward the provision of patient-centred care underpins efforts to enhance the nature and capacity of patient participation in acute postoperative hospital care. In this paper, we describe the design, framework and processes used to develop a modular, procedure-specific, digital health intervention platform aimed at improving the patient experience and patient participation in care following surgery. The intervention, a multimedia application MyStay, uses bedside delivery of audio-visual and text-based information to engage postoperative patients to better participate in their care. MyStay modules are developed using an iterative, multi-method approach intended to balance procedure-specific best …
An Overview Of Tour-Guide Training Literature In Türkiye, Nazım Çokişler
An Overview Of Tour-Guide Training Literature In Türkiye, Nazım Çokişler
International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research
The discussion of tour-guide training, which started in the 1990s in Türkiye has been taken up in the associated literature more than in any other country. No studies were previously carried out, however, to place the nearly-30-year-prolonged discussions in a historical framework and evaluate them. Yet, understanding the evolution of such training-related discussions has the potential to lead to remarkably useful information for future analyses of the subject. The purpose of the present research is to provide an overall evaluation of the literature about tourguide training in Türkiye. To this end, the literature was reviewed, and the issues addressed as …
Migration And Displacement In Twenty-First Century Magical Realist Fiction, Laura Duncan Fontenot
Migration And Displacement In Twenty-First Century Magical Realist Fiction, Laura Duncan Fontenot
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In “Migration and Displacement in Twenty-First Century Magical Realist Fiction” I discuss identity development and the search for belonging of displaced people within twenty-first century magical realist novels. In each instance, the characters undergo some form of change heralded by a magical moment or moments. The “magic” allows the authors to literalize underlying cultural tensions by physically altering some aspect of a character. The changes are not mere metaphors, they are literal, bodily transformations. The first stage of this process are magical thresholds that allow passage in space and time far beyond the conventions of reality. A magical threshold literalizes …

Standardized cross-cultural databases of the arts are critical to a balanced scientific under- standing of the performing arts, and their role in other domains of human society. This paper introduces the Global Jukebox as a resource for comparative and cross-cultural study of the performing arts and culture. The Global Jukebox adds an extensive and detailed global database of the performing arts that enlarges our understanding of human cultural diversity. Initially prototyped by Alan Lomax in the 1980s, its core is the Cantometric s dataset, encompassing standardized codings on 37 aspects of musical style for 5,776 traditional songs from 1,026 societies. …

This dissertation in practice documents the program evaluation of the Community Scholars (CS) program at the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities (FCIC), a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) at the University of South Florida (USF). CS is part of a diversity pipeline program that recruits youth with disabilities to engage in paid on-the-job training (OJT) with FCIC. Scholars are community members (youth with disabilities) that are enrolled as FCIC trainees and receive mentoring, development of basic administrative competencies, individualized career coaching, college counseling, and disability policy and self-advocacy training. Through the OJT experience, scholars gain skills that …
Translanguaging Views And Practices Of Indiana Dual-Language Bilingual Education Teachers, Amanda Shie
Translanguaging Views And Practices Of Indiana Dual-Language Bilingual Education Teachers, Amanda Shie
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
As of fall 2018, the United States had 5 million English language learners (ELLs) in the public K–12 education system (National Center for Education Statistics, 2021). Within this population, ELL students in Indiana number over 50,000, or 5.9% of all public K–12 students in the state. Dual-language bilingual education (DLBE) programs often neglect the strategy of translanguaging in the classroom, disadvantaging ELLs. Translanguaging is defined as drawing “on all the linguistic resources of the child to maximize understanding and achievement” and is demonstrated in the natural switching of languages in bilinguals (Lewis et al., 2012). Further, translanguaging attempts to correct …

Exploring The Purdue Teacher Education Program: Focus On Diversity, Equity, And Social Justice, Julia Pirrello
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
During this time of heightened awareness of social injustices via Black Lives Matter protests, the #MeToo movement, and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to ensure that teacher preparation curriculum includes attention to knowledge and skills related to social justice issues in education. Th e purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which social justice, diversity, and equity are addressed in the foundational courses of the Purdue Teacher Education Program (PTEP). McDonald (2005) proposed a framework in which social justice is integrated across all experiences (e.g., courses, activities, clinical placements) in a teacher education program. In an …

Mft Trainee Experiences Of Shame, Self-Criticism, And Self-Compassion In Their First Practicum, Mark Karris , Ph.D., Angela B. Kim Ph.D.
Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of MFT trainee shame, self-criticism, and self-compassion. Additionally, this study also sought to understand how those experiences may affect a trainee’s clinical work as a first-time practicum student. Interviews were conducted with 15 trainees in a graduate program who were performing therapy at a practicum site. Utilizing Moustakas’ transcendental phenomenology, six essential themes emerged: (1) shame and self-criticism are interrelated and can affect therapeutic presence; (2) self-criticism can have a positive impact on clinical work; (3) trainees use metaphors to describe shame and self-criticism (4) self-compassion …
Notes On Language In The Clinic In A Lacanian Key, Sean J. Carroll
Notes On Language In The Clinic In A Lacanian Key, Sean J. Carroll
Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review
There is no shortage of therapeutic modalities and interventions at the therapist’s disposal. Psychotherapy, because it claims to treat the individual, is necessarily multifaceted and complex. The dimension of language which structures much of our experience should be considered as a starting point for a psychotherapeutic technique. French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan developed a theory and technique of the talking cure beginning from this assumption: that language structures our experience. In the early 1950s he sought to recover a linguistic Freud: to re-center psychoanalytic psychotherapy on language itself. In this paper, I sketch the theoretical reasons for this turn in Lacan …

I work in the broad areas of computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, neural networks, machine learning, deep learning, game theory, mathematical logic, and natural language processing. I am also actively working in the area of algorithmic fairness and explainable AI (XAI). Currently, we are developing neuro-symbolic logic learning systems for common sense reasoning, which aims to augment the existing conventional artificial intelligence, which is logically based. The neuro-symbolic logic-based systems will provide more accurate results than their GOAI (Good Old Artificial Intelligence) version. We are also working on the area of abstractive summarization methods. We intend to develop an efficient abstractive …

Language Development And Disorders, Sudhin Karuppali Dr.
Health collection
The field of language development and its disorders is a widely researched area in the field of speech-language pathology. However, language development in the Indian population is vaguely studied, probably because of the diversity of languages and cultures in this country. This has time and again resulted in difficulties in estimating the language levels of children with language impairments, consequently becoming challenging to prepare customized interventional plans. The lack of standardized language assessment tools has always been a concern in clinical practice. This lacuna in establishing accurate language levels has been observed in the adolescent population as well, which is …

Chinese Consumers’ Attitudes Toward Animal Welfare: Behaviors, Beliefs, And Responses To Messaging, Jo Anderson
General - Animal Protection
Despite being comparatively neglected until recently, the suffering of animals in Asia is starting to command more attention from global animal advocacy activists. In particular, as the largest country in the world by both human and farmed animal population, and among the largest when measured by economy and land mass, China plays a central role here. However, the key question of how best to improve outcomes for farmed animals in China remains difficult to answer, due to the recency of the movement and a comparative lack of research on the topic.
Although China’s per capita meat consumption is lower than …
Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek
Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The article describes a cross-cultural study comparing bicultural identity and bilingualism of first-generation Poles and high school students in the Rhône Alpes Region (France), high school students in Brussels (Belgium) as well as Polish university students of French language and culture in Poland. The study results portray the contrast between Polish students and three other groups acculturating abroad so that French identity appears stronger than Polish among the university students, and Polish identity stronger than French among the migrants. Secondly, acculturative context (home vs host country) is a moderator between Polish-French bilingualism and bicultural identity. Results are discussed in the …
Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio
Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This research project aimed to discover how English monolingual speakers interpret the idea of grammatical gender, and if they have an innate bias toward associating common English nouns to the masculine gender. My hypothesis was that participants would assign a masculine grammatical gender to words at a greater than chance due to an existent internalized genderism/sexism within the participants. To gather data, a Qualtrics survey was designed to test participants. Said survey was limited to people who only speak English and contained 10 different common nouns. After the presentation of each noun, participants were given two options: masculine or feminine. …

SAIPAR Case Review
This was an application in terms of s 145 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1966. Toyota sought to have the decision of the CCMA, ordering the re-instatement of Mr Lungile Njini - then an employee of Toyota for 17 years – be set aside, and that his dismissal be declared fair. The case represents an interesting interplay between the quest for discipline and productivity in the workplace and the right to exercise one’s constitutional right to culture as provided for in s 30 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act. This note is divided into …

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Many refugees moving into Greece and other European countries often struggle to adjust to their new life. Over and above other factors, social isolation seems to be a major contributor in their poor adjustment outcomes, yet the underlying psychological mechanisms of their links are not well understood. Based on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change, we conceptualized refugees’ adjustment as a major life transition that depends on (i) the maintenance of existing pre-migratory group memberships (social identity continuity pathway), (ii) the development of new post-migratory social identities (social identity gain pathway), and (iii) the perceived compatibility between pre- and …

The 1921 Founding Of The International Missionary Council In The Life Of John R. Mott, Benjamin L. Hartley
SPU Works
The 1921 beginning of the International Missionary Council (IMC) at Lake Mohonk, New York represented a “pivot point” in the life of John R. Mott (1865-1955). It symbolized for him and other participants a bold initiative in international missionary collaboration that had ramifications for liberal internationalism well beyond the Christian movement itself. World War I was devastating for millions throughout the world, but for Mott it was also a time where his influence in world affairs grew. This article focuses on the years after the war as a time of many challenges and disappointments for Mott as he struggled with …

Public libraries are trusted community hubs that foster connections with individuals of different socioeconomic statuses; ages; ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural backgrounds; and sexual and gender identities. Located in diverse settings, library branches offer resources and programs that meet the specific needs of their communities who are navigating the effects of our increasingly asocial society. Libraries have been shown to cater to individuals contending with higher levels of social isolation and loneliness, as well as increased rates of mental illnesses and antisocial behaviours. The shift to online environments during COVID-19 has exacerbated feelings of disconnection. During these times of change, …

A Cross Cultural Perspective Of Adherence For Racial/Ethnic Minority Women With Hiv, Living In The United States, Lunthita M. Duthely, Olga Villar-Loubet, Sneha Akurati, Alex P. Sanchez Covarrubias
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
HIV persists as a global public health tragedy, as more than 36 million lives have been lost to HIV/AIDS. A diagnosis of HIV can be treated as a chronic disease, for those who adhere to their medication regimens and other health recommendations. However, for racial/ethnic minorities living in the United States, many of whom face a multitude of barriers, adherence to medications and medical appointments can be a challenge. For racial/ethnic minority women, specifically, gender roles, HIV stigma, racism, inconsistent access to healthcare, financial and food insecurity are just a few of the barriers they experience, which may interfere with …

Building Research Initiatives By Developing Group Effort (Bridge): Patient-Partners In Aphasia Research, Alejandro Brice, Jacqueline Hinckley
HPD Articles
Researcher-initiated research often has little or no input from the groups who will be affected by the results of the research. The aim of this project was to describe practices of embracing patient-partners (i.e., individuals with aphasia and spouses/family members) in research. Six webinars were developed for both researchers and patient-partners that were required prior to participating in a joint conference that focused on collaborative research teams. The conference was designed based on an appreciative inquiry approach. Including patient-partners into research priorities and planning has been accomplished across various health domains in the United States, but this was the first …
Interpreting State Statutes In Federal Court, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Interpreting State Statutes In Federal Court, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article addresses a problem that potentially arises whenever a federal court encounters a state statute. When interpreting the state statute, should the federal court use the state’s methods of statutory interpretation—the state’s canons of construction, its rules about the use of legislative history, and the like—or should the court instead use federal methods of statutory interpretation? The question is interesting as a matter of theory, and it is practically significant because different jurisdictions have somewhat different interpretive approaches. In addressing itself to this problem, the Article makes two contributions. First, it shows, as a normative matter, that federal courts …
Against Secondary Meaning, Jeanne C. Fromer
Against Secondary Meaning, Jeanne C. Fromer
Notre Dame Law Review
Trademark law premises protection and scope of marks on secondary meaning, which is established when a mark develops sufficient association to consumers with a business as a source of goods or services in addition to the mark’s linguistic primary meaning. In recent years, scholars have proposed that secondary meaning plays an even more central role in trademark law than it already does. Yet enshrining secondary meaning in the law undermines the ultimate goals of trademark law: promoting fair competition and protecting consumers. The dangers of enshrining secondary meaning include the problematic doctrine that has built up to assess it or …

Technology, Artistic Collaboration, And Performance Practice In Bella Voce’S 2019 Recording Of Brahms’ A German Requiem, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
How do the recordist, conductor, and performers work together to create a unique recorded statement within the discourse between a 19th century composer and a 21st century listener in Bella Voce’s 2019 recording of Brahms A German Requiem (1871 London Version)?
The complexity of preparing a musical work and creating a recording of its performance encompasses many disciplines and the collaboration of many individuals. The process involves questions of performance practice, recording technique, applications of digital technology, and artistic choices on the part of all involved. The 2019 Bella Voce recording of Brahms’ A German Requiem is an …
