Silencio: The Hispanic/Latino Reticent Approach To Racism
Silencio: The Hispanic/Latino Reticent Approach To Racism
Florida A & M University Law Review
Many Latinos dream of coming to America in search for a better way of life but instead are faced with discrimination based on where they come from, the language they speak, and the pigmentation of their skin. Racial discrimination is one of the most ever-present issues in the United States of America today. Some look at discrimination and believe that it has been “fixed” through our political and judicial processes. However, others know that discrimination is still alive and prominent today. Today, discrimination has manifested itself differently –it is discreet and indirect but still prominent in the daily lives of …

Re-Examining Productive-Skills Anxiety Constructs In Online Instructional Contexts Involving Thai Undergraduates Following The Covid-19 Pandemic, Teaka Sowaprux, Chatraporn Piamsai
PASAA
This study reexamines various foreign language anxiety (FLA) predictors that may be applicable to the Southeast Asian and Thai contexts beyond the dimensions initially validated by Horwitz et al. (1986) and Cheng (2004). This study explores two frameworks, namely, the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) (Horwitz et al., 1986) that measures classroom speaking anxiety, and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) (Cheng, 2004) that samples writing anxiety across three factors (i.e., somatic anxiety, avoidance behavior, and cognitive anxiety). The present study sought to understand how the online classroom apparatus during the context of the COVID-19 pandemic affected the …

Many studies acknowledge that English proficiency contributes to academic performance, eventually affecting one’s career. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate whether English proficiency (EPT) could predict students’ academic performance at a state Islamic university in Indonesia. A quantitative approach was used, in which the data of students’ EPT and their Grade Point Averages (GPAs) were collected from 4,959 bachelor’s degree seeking students from various faculties. These data were taken from the university’s information center and then analyze using regression analysis to estimate if EPT significantly predicted GPA, whose finding was statistically significant (R2 = [.016], F (1, 4958) = [82.885], …

Turkish Efl Learnersʼ Receptive Affix Knowledge As A Diagnostic Tool To Predict Their Productive Derivative Vocabulary Knowledge, Mustafa Yildiz
PASAA
The present study sets out to measure Turkish EFL learners' receptive affix knowledge and productive derivative vocabulary knowledge. More specifically, the extent to which Turkish EFL learners recognize written form of affixes, know the meaning of affixes and determine the part of speech of the derivatives produced by means of affixes and how good such learners are at producing derivatives have been investigated. Sasao and Webbʼs (2017) Word Part Levels Test (WPLT) to diagnose learnersʼ receptive affix knowledge and the Contextualized Derivative Recall Test developed by Iwaizumi and Webb (2021) to measure EFL learnersʼ productive derivative vocabulary knowledge have been …

In India, where elementary education is a fundamental right, significant barriers stall the attainment of educational equity through linguistic inclusivity. This article explores student identities by examining intersections of language, caste, race, and socioeconomic class to make visible complexities of privilege, discrimination, and connections between social structure, identity, and language in education. From qualitative ethnographic research with a settled nomadic Tribal community in rural India, this article highlights contradictions between recent mother tongue language education policies and experiences of social disparities and stigma for Banjara Tribal youth, who speak a different mother tongue language than the language of education. I …
The Long Term-Failings Of Internally Displaced Person Status: A Case Study Of The Êzidi People, Sarah A. Johns
The Long Term-Failings Of Internally Displaced Person Status: A Case Study Of The Êzidi People, Sarah A. Johns
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Never has the term limbo been so appropriately used in modern history than as applied to the current situation of the Êzidi internally displaced persons (IDPs). As Dante’s first circle of hell, limbo separates its residents from God, leaving them in a state of eternal suffering and sadness. This in-between place is saved for just individuals who did not receive Christ as required in Catholic theology and are now doomed to reside forever in a place of separation from God’s presence. Limbo is a state of punishment that seemingly freezes one’s ability to progress or enjoy future happiness.

Machine Learning Models To Automate Radiotherapy Structure Name Standardization, Priyankar Bose
Machine Learning Models To Automate Radiotherapy Structure Name Standardization, Priyankar Bose
Theses and Dissertations
Structure name standardization is a critical problem in Radiotherapy planning systems to correctly identify the various Organs-at-Risk, Planning Target Volumes and `Other' organs for monitoring present and future medications. Physicians often label anatomical structure sets in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images with nonstandard random names. Hence, the standardization of these names for the Organs at Risk (OARs), Planning Target Volumes (PTVs), and `Other' organs is a vital problem. Prior works considered traditional machine learning approaches on structure sets with moderate success. We compare both traditional methods and deep neural network-based approaches on the multimodal vision-language prostate cancer …

Prevailing approaches to addressing environmental justice in Indian Country are inadequate. The dual pursuits of distributive and procedural justice do not fully account for the unique factors that make Indigenous environmental justice distinct—namely, the sovereign status of tribal nations and the ongoing impacts of colonization.
This Article synthetizes interdisciplinary approaches to theorizing Indigenous environmental justice and proposes a framework to aid environmental law scholars and advocates. Specifically, by centering Indigenous environmental justice in terms of coloniality and self-determination, this framework can better critique and improve environmental governance regimes when it comes to pollution in Indian Country.

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
This chapter describes an instructional framework for culturally relevant and affirming teaching and curricula that addresses effective ways to interconnect cross-cultural content to expand cultural and content literacy in K-12. The Culturally and Linguistically Affirming Pedagogies for Local Context (CLAP-LC) Framework was developed to create culturally and linguistically affirming content, promote equitable education, and nurture student engagement. The framework centers on the intersection of cultural knowledge and lived experiences of students, families, and communities in content and curriculum to promote student achievement, especially students from minoritized and marginalized groups.

Semantics Of The Symbol "Z" In The Religious Ideology Of The Russian Federation, Ivan Ostashchuk, Volodymyr Litkevych
Semantics Of The Symbol "Z" In The Religious Ideology Of The Russian Federation, Ivan Ostashchuk, Volodymyr Litkevych
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article analyzes for the first time the identification and content of Russian military symbols and their use in Russian Orthodoxy. At the linguistic level, it was found that such word formation Z-Orthodoxy was taken from the publications and public speeches of Archimandrite Kyrylo Govorun. Our study focuses on the proposal to use the neologism Z-Orthodoxy to demonstrate some semantic interpretations in the context of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the entire democratic world. As a result of the analysis of the military symbols of the Russian Federation, Russian Orthodoxy found that after February 24, …

Sacred Architecture And Interreligious Dialogue In The Concept Of The “Russian World”, Oleksandr Lukyanenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article continues a series of studies illustrating the formation of the idea of the “Russian world” in the religious discourse of Orthodox Russia. The main attention is paid to ideological stamps used by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow during sermons and public speeches. The study summarizes the idea of the exclusivity of the Russian spiritual path in contrast to the West, which supports the annexation geopolitical policy of Vladimir Putin. The article provides examples of falsification of historical facts in the religious and political spheres in order to create a powerful propaganda background in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. …

Only recently has eye-tracking been used to investigate test-taker reading behavior, and results have been primarily used to confirm a range of cognitive tasks elicited by test items. This study explores test taker reading behavior for its own sake by describing how ESL readers of different proficiency levels behaviorally view multiple-choice passages and test items at different difficulty levels. Data were gathered from 51 students at three proficiency levels attending a university-sponsored intensive English program (IEP). Participants read eight validated reading comprehension items at varying difficulty levels while their eye movements were recorded on the passage, multiple-choice stem, correct answer, …
(2023) Charles Peirce And The Community Of Inquiry, Maughn Rollins Gregory
(2023) Charles Peirce And The Community Of Inquiry, Maughn Rollins Gregory
Collected Papers of Maughn Rollins Gregory
This article reconstructs and clarifies Charles S. Peirce’s conception of the relationship between inquiry and community, responding to the widespread use of the phrase “community of inquiry” in educational, philosophical, and civic contexts. After tracing the genealogy of the phrase, the essay offers a systematic account of Peirce’s theory of inquiry by identifying five central elements—anti-intuitionism, fallibilism, the belief–doubt–inquiry cycle, the logic of inquiry, and self-correction—and by explicating three indispensable roles that community plays within that theory: semiosis, corroboration, and mutual criticism. The article then examines the first educational adaptation of this idea in the work of Matthew Lipman, Ann …
The Underrepresentation Of Women In Japanese Politics: Through The Lens Of Sekuhara, Sexism, And Media Rhetoric, Elizabeth L. Whitmer
The Underrepresentation Of Women In Japanese Politics: Through The Lens Of Sekuhara, Sexism, And Media Rhetoric, Elizabeth L. Whitmer
Honors Theses
Despite being a democratic and economically successful country, women in Japanese politics are extremely underrepresented. Since institutional factors do not explicitly prohibit women from holding office, this project turns to cultural factors to analyze this problem. Issues such as strict gender roles, sexual harassment, and rhetoric surrounding women politicians are some factors contextualizing the lives of Japanese women. In order to better understand these cultural barriers, this project turns to content analysis of news media in Japan to consider the ways in which women politicians are framed to the electorate, which may thus explain the low rates of elected women.

Alternative Facts: The Strategy Of Judicial Rhetoric, Tonja Jacobi, Eryn Mascia

Studies have established the influence of ideology on the answers justices give to legal questions; this study shows that the questions themselves are often selected, framed, and phrased in a way that promotes ideologically-driven answers. By examining a variety of linguistic techniques used to describe just the facts of constitutional criminal procedure cases—separate from the legal analysis—we show the justices are engaging in highly strategic behavior. The facts included, omitted, or emphasized vary with the ideology of the justices and are predictable not just based on voting behavior in other criminal procedure cases but in all Supreme Court cases. Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Domestic, or household robots, are autonomous robots designed to make our home-life easier by performing chores and mundane tasks such as cleaning, or cooking. Currently domestic robots are specialized to complete a specific task and, therefore, are confined by factors such as mobility, size, and complexity. With the fast development of computer vision and robotics, the need for more compact, advanced and multi-task robots has emerged. Therefore, the robot needs to be multi-functional, able to discern the environment and the tasks. The aim of this paper is to categorize images in domestic robots as relevant to the culinary, laundry, vacuum …
Against Political Theory In Constitutional Interpretation, Christopher Havasy, Joshua Macey, Brian Richardson
Against Political Theory In Constitutional Interpretation, Christopher Havasy, Joshua Macey, Brian Richardson
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Judges and academics have long relied on the work of a small number of Enlightenment political theorists—particularly Locke, Montesquieu, and Blackstone—to discern meaning from vague and ambiguous constitutional provisions. This Essay cautions that Enlightenment political theory should rarely, if ever, be cited as an authoritative source of constitutional meaning. There are three principal problems with constitutional interpretation based on eighteenth-century political theory. First, Enlightenment thinkers developed distinct and incompatible theories about how to structure a republican form of government. That makes it difficult to decide which among the conflicting theories should possess constitutional significance. Second, the drafters did not write …

Improving Multiclass Classification Of Fake News Using Bert-Based Models And Chatgpt-Augmented Data, Elena Shushkevich, Mikhail Alexandrov, John Cardiff
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Given the widespread accessibility of content creation and sharing, false information proliferation is a growing concern. Researchers typically tackle fake news detection (FND) in specific topics using binary classification. Our study addresses a more practical FND scenario, analyzing a corpus with unknown topics through multiclass classification, encompassing true, false, partially false, and other categories. Our contribution involves: (1) exploring three BERT-based models—SBERT, RoBERTa, and mBERT; (2) enhancing results via ChatGPT-generated artificial data for class balance; and (3) improving outcomes using a two-step binary classification procedure. Our focus is on the CheckThat! Lab dataset from CLEF-2022. Our experimental results demonstrate a …

Language embeddings are often used as black-box word-level tools that provide powerful language analysis across many tasks, but yet for many tasks such as Authorship Attribution access to feature level information on character n-grams can provide insights to help with model refinement and development. In this paper we investigate and evaluate the importance of character n-grams within an embeddings context in authorship attribution through the use of attention scores. We perform this investigation both for English (Reuters_50_50) and Russian (Taiga) news authorship datasets. Our analysis show that character n-grams attention score is higher for n-grams that are considered to be …

Reading In Place: Ordinary Language Philosophy, Wendell Berry, And Post Critique, Calvin L. Coon
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The twenty-first century, marked by neoliberalism and suspicious, visibly violent far-Right politics, has presented new challenges to critical and literary theorists. In response, some theorists advocate for a postcritical turn, challenging both the surface/depth picture of language and the privileged status of suspicion in interpretation in order to explore alternative pictures of language and reading that can better address the challenges of our own day. In this thesis, I connect one of these alternatives, Toril Moi’s use of Ordinary Language Philosophy in literary studies, to Wendell Berry’s prioritization of place in environmentalist activism. In connecting these two thinkers, I contend …

The Antimicrobial Peptide Database Is 20 Years Old: Recent Developments And Future Directions, Guangshun Wang
Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
In 2023, the Antimicrobial Peptide Database (currently available at https://aps.unmc.edu) is 20-years-old. The timeline for the APD expansion in peptide entries, classification methods, search functions, post-translational modifications, binding targets, and mechanisms of action of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) has been summarized in our previous Protein Science paper. This article highlights new database additions and findings. To facilitate antimicrobial development to combat drug-resistant pathogens, the APD has been re-annotating the data for antibacterial activity (active, inactive, and uncertain), toxicity (hemolytic and nonhemolytic AMPs), and salt tolerance (salt sensitive and insensitive). Comparison of the respective desired and undesired AMP groups produces new knowledge …
