Exploring The Implementation Of Social-Emotional Learning (Sel) Group Training With Student Leaders In Higher Education, Armani Guillama
Exploring The Implementation Of Social-Emotional Learning (Sel) Group Training With Student Leaders In Higher Education, Armani Guillama
OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
"The scholarly component of the doctoral experiential (DEx) project was to conduct a social-emotional learning (SEL) training with student leaders at Western New England University (WNE). The training was done with Orientation Group Leaders. The project's overall objective was to understand the participants' perceived stress, enhance SEL awareness, and educate on the benefits of on-campus involvement to combat mental health issues through the delivery of an SEL training. According to Horton (2015), developing students’ social-emotional skills is shown to improve academic performance and provide students with a solid foundation for achieving success in post-secondary environments and in the workplace. This …
Addressing Gaps In Care For Upper Limb Absence Through Teaching, Learning, And Research: A Doctoral Experiential Project, Anne Wepfer
OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
"The overall aim of this multi-faceted DEx project was to address gaps in education for individuals who are the upper limb absence (ULA) population and their healthcare professionals. Four separate, but related efforts were combined to compose this project: contributions to a learning management system for prosthetic technology, a white paper about ULA and prosthetic technology available, a research endeavor to determine how water damage affects prosthesis users, and a writing workshop for students within the Western New England University Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. These facets worked together to build my teaching skills and provide useful products for the …

Evaluation Of Text Transformers For Classifying Sentiment Of Reviews By Using Tf-Idf, Bert (Word Embedding), Sbert (Sentence Embedding) With Support Vector Machine Evaluation, Mina Jamshidian
Dissertations
As the online world evolves and new media emerge, consumers are sharing their reviews and opinions online. This has been studied in various academic fields, including marketing and computer science. Sentiment analysis, a technique used to identify the sentiment of a piece of text, has been researched in different domains such as movie reviews and mobile app ratings. However, the video game industry has received relatively little research on experiential products. The purpose of this study is to apply sentiment analysis to user reviews of games on Steam, a popular gaming platform, in order to produce actionable results. The video …
Modelling And Mitigating Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human-Avatar And Human-Robot Interaction, Na Li
Modelling And Mitigating Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human-Avatar And Human-Robot Interaction, Na Li
Dissertations
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is an important but challenging field focused on improving the interaction between humans and robots, to make the interaction more intelligent and effective. However, building a natural conversational HRI is an interdisciplinary challenge for scholars, engineers, and designers. Achieving successful conversational interaction with a social robot necessitates not only observing a user’s active participation in the interaction but also being aware of their emotional and attitudinal states as the interaction progresses. On the topic of attitudinal states, one field that has received little attention to date is monitoring the user for possible confusion states. Confusion is a …
Examining The Sociolinguistic Expression Of Moral Disgust, And Investigating The Role Of The Emotion In Inter- And Intra-Group Processes., Ryan Statton
School of Psychology Theses
Informed by Tybur et al’s (2009) Three Domains of Disgust Model, I used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to develop and test a prototypical model of Moral Disgust and investigate how the emotion functions in both intra- and inter-group processes. I conducted thematic analysis to construct a two-factor model of Moral Disgust informed by the sociolinguistic perspective (Sankoff, 1982). The new model identified the sub-factors Hierarchical Disgust and Third-Party Disgust and extend Giner-Sorolla et al.’s (2018) two-factor model by including considerations of group and third-party protection. The new model of Moral Disgust also supports an extension of the …

ANISHINAABEG NIIZH MANITOAG:
ASHAA A’MAA, WE WERE ALWAYS HERE
Abstract
This research is an in-depth exposé of Anishinaabeg knowledge surrounding niizh manitoag, two-spirit ways of knowing. General collections of two-spirit writings and contributions in the past thirty years uncovered a noticeable gap in the research around Anishinaabeg's two-spirit knowledge, stories, and teachings.
Using Indigenous research paradigms, this knowledge base posits a unique theoretical, conceptual framework identified as an Indigenous Relational Theory. The theory delineates a way of knowing and understanding Anishinaabe niizh manitoag, two-spirit identity. The Indigenous Relational Theory consists of four models, Relational Cultural Model, Relational Identity …

The Shortfalls Of Vulnerability Indexes For Public Health Decision-Making In The Face Of Emergent Crises: The Case Of Covid-19 Vaccine Uptake In Virginia, Lydia Cleveland Sa, Erika Frydenlund
VMASC Publications
Equitable and effective vaccine uptake is a key issue in addressing COVID-19. To achieve this, we must comprehensively characterize the context-specific socio-behavioral and structural determinants of vaccine uptake. However, to quickly focus public health interventions, state agencies and planners often rely on already existing indexes of "vulnerability." Many such "vulnerability indexes" exist and become benchmarks for targeting interventions in wide ranging scenarios, but they vary considerably in the factors and themes that they cover. Some are even uncritical of the use of the word "vulnerable," which should take on different meanings in different contexts. The objective of this study is …

Large language models (LLMs) excel in providing natural language responses that sound authoritative, reflect knowledge of the context area, and can present from a range of varied perspectives. Agent-based models and simulations consist of simulated agents that interact within a simulated environment to explore societal, social, and ethical, among other, problems. Simulated agents generate large volumes of data and discerning useful and relevant content is an onerous task. LLMs can help in communicating agents' perspectives on key life events by providing natural language narratives. However, these narratives should be factual, transparent, and reproducible. Therefore, we present a structured narrative prompt …

Impact Of Targeted Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion (Dei) Initiatives On The Retention And Graduation Rates Of Students Of Color At Community Colleges, Momoh Sekou Dudu
School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations
In the United States of America, students of color (SOCs) encounter significant barriers when they seek higher education. As a result, many institutions of higher learning pursue diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to enhance these students’ chances at social and academic attainment. For community colleges across the nation, because they enroll a disproportionately large number of SOCs due to their combination of open enrollment policies, low tuition and geographic proximity, targeted DEI initiatives are a strategy of choice in dealing with their abysmal retention and graduation rates among this student demographic. This dissertation, anchored in sociological-based theoretical frameworks—specifically William …
Threshold For Learning: The Case For Prioritizing The In-Between Spaces In Education, Xiaodi Zhou
Threshold For Learning: The Case For Prioritizing The In-Between Spaces In Education, Xiaodi Zhou
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
In this paper, the author analyses learning as a function of the threshold between parties and ideas. Using Bakhtinian dialogic theory, literacy learning in particular is envisioned as a dialogue of the threshold. This instructional threshold is viewed both in pedagogical and biological terms. The physiological process of learning is described, making a biological case for instructional scaffolding and the gradual release of responsibility in the classroom. The dialogue of different disciplines serves as integration of several thresholds and further strengthening of learning. Curriculum integration is then promoted as a means to lasting learning.

Plant Sentience Revisited: Sifting Through The Thicket Of Perspectives, Paco Calvo, Miguel Segundo-Ortin
Animal Sentience
In our target article (Segundo-Ortin & Calvo 2023), we proposed the intriguing possibility of plant sentience, drawing parallels with non-human animal studies. This response aims to sift through the rich thicket of perspectives offered by our commentators. To do so, we assess the risks of employing double standards, as well as the tendencies of anthropomorphizing and zoomorphizing in plant studies. We also emphasize the need for clarity in linguistic and conceptual terms, examine the neurophysiological evidence for plant sentience, and discuss the ethical implications of such recognition.

Growing Sustainable Quality Dual Language Immersion Programs: The Impact Of Key Leadership Preparation, Training, And Support, Vera Woolard
Doctor of Education Dissertations
As principals take the lead on planning, implementing, and ensuring the sustainability of their dual language immersion (DLI) programs, there is extant literature on the appropriate actions for conducting such work. However, there is a lack of research on principal preparedness and training for those leading bilingual education programs, specifically DLI programs. This mixed methods study explored specific leadership behaviors and/or practices necessary for program preparation as well as the internal and/or external support and professional development that is paramount for principals to lead and maintain successful and sustainable DLI programs. Subsequently, the study was designed to help identify key …
Perceptions Of Paraprofessionals On The Grow Your Own Teacher Program In Three Rural School Districts In Eastern North Carolina, Tony Faison
Doctor of Education Dissertations
The Grow Your Own Teacher (GYOT) program addresses the shortage of qualified teachers by recruiting and training community residents to become qualified teachers. These programs look and feel like community-building strategies instead of teacher pipeline strategies. The GYOT initiative is not new, but the mainstream absorption of the GYOT initiative presents an exciting opportunity to link education policy and neighborhood revitalization more closely. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of paraprofessionals on the GYOT program in three rural school districts in eastern North Carolina. The conceptual framework was based on Yosso's (2005) Cultural Wealth Model, …

Silencio: The Hispanic/Latino Reticent Approach To Racism
Florida A & M University Law Review
Many Latinos dream of coming to America in search for a better way of life but instead are faced with discrimination based on where they come from, the language they speak, and the pigmentation of their skin. Racial discrimination is one of the most ever-present issues in the United States of America today. Some look at discrimination and believe that it has been “fixed” through our political and judicial processes. However, others know that discrimination is still alive and prominent today. Today, discrimination has manifested itself differently –it is discreet and indirect but still prominent in the daily lives of …

This study reexamines various foreign language anxiety (FLA) predictors that may be applicable to the Southeast Asian and Thai contexts beyond the dimensions initially validated by Horwitz et al. (1986) and Cheng (2004). This study explores two frameworks, namely, the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) (Horwitz et al., 1986) that measures classroom speaking anxiety, and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) (Cheng, 2004) that samples writing anxiety across three factors (i.e., somatic anxiety, avoidance behavior, and cognitive anxiety). The present study sought to understand how the online classroom apparatus during the context of the COVID-19 pandemic affected the …

Many studies acknowledge that English proficiency contributes to academic performance, eventually affecting one’s career. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate whether English proficiency (EPT) could predict students’ academic performance at a state Islamic university in Indonesia. A quantitative approach was used, in which the data of students’ EPT and their Grade Point Averages (GPAs) were collected from 4,959 bachelor’s degree seeking students from various faculties. These data were taken from the university’s information center and then analyze using regression analysis to estimate if EPT significantly predicted GPA, whose finding was statistically significant (R2 = [.016], F (1, 4958) = [82.885], …

In India, where elementary education is a fundamental right, significant barriers stall the attainment of educational equity through linguistic inclusivity. This article explores student identities by examining intersections of language, caste, race, and socioeconomic class to make visible complexities of privilege, discrimination, and connections between social structure, identity, and language in education. From qualitative ethnographic research with a settled nomadic Tribal community in rural India, this article highlights contradictions between recent mother tongue language education policies and experiences of social disparities and stigma for Banjara Tribal youth, who speak a different mother tongue language than the language of education. The Long Term-Failings Of Internally Displaced Person Status: A Case Study Of The Êzidi People, Sarah A. Johns
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Never has the term limbo been so appropriately used in modern history than as applied to the current situation of the Êzidi internally displaced persons (IDPs). As Dante’s first circle of hell, limbo separates its residents from God, leaving them in a state of eternal suffering and sadness. This in-between place is saved for just individuals who did not receive Christ as required in Catholic theology and are now doomed to reside forever in a place of separation from God’s presence. Limbo is a state of punishment that seemingly freezes one’s ability to progress or enjoy future happiness.
