Translated Opinions

The appellant, an Israel Jew belonging to the Caucasian community, married in the year 1936. He married a second time in the year 1950 while the first marriage still subsisted. He was convicted of bigamy under s. 181 of the Criminal Code Ordinance, 1936 1) and sentenced to imprisonment for one year. On appeal it was argued that s. 181 was ultra vires the powers of the High Commissioner by reason of Article 17(1)(a) 2)2) of the Palestine Order in Council 1922 (as amended) in that the section introduced discrimination between the inhabitants of Palestine, namely, between Moslems and Jews, …

Alterations Of Accrued Dividends: Ii, Arno C. Becht Feb 1951

Alterations Of Accrued Dividends: Ii, Arno C. Becht

Michigan Law Review

If the present course of decisions is continued, it is a serious question whether investors can safely purchase preferred stock at a price above the common stock of the same corporation. In all frankness, such certificates should now bear on their faces a statement that they are subject to alteration in a great variety of ways, all to their detriment, and that if business is bad, losses will be visited upon them, regardless of the liquidation and other preferences which they have on paper. It seems not unlikely that corporations will find that the temporary expedients which they have adopted …

The Pessimism Of Ecclesiasties, Frederick W. Danker Jan 1951

The Pessimism Of Ecclesiasties, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Much of the literature published on Ecclesiastes in recent years stresses the pessimistic tone of the book. It is felt that the author's philosophy of life is permeated with a sense of futility and hopelessness in the face of historical events and the experiences of individuals. The purpose of this essay is to challenge the validity of such an interpretation and establish the proposition that Ecclesiastes is indeed pessimistic, but more profoundly so than is generally indicated. An analysis of his own statements indicates that his entire approach is based on a consideration of man's total depravity. God, however, aims …

119th Annual Report Of The Board Of World Missions, Reformed Church In America

Board of Foreign Missions Annual Reports

The Board of Foreign Missions (later, World Missions) was organized by the General Synod in 1832. The board was under the direction of the RCA but was also under the authority of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. David Abeel led the first mission of the RCA to the island of Borneo in the Dutch East Indies in 1836. Missions also sprouted in four primary target areas: Japan, India, China, and Arabia. In 1857, the board broke away from its ties with the American Board of Missions and established independent missions. Under its current name, the board is …
