Austroasiatic Loanwords In Austronesian Languages, Waruno Mahdi
Austroasiatic Loanwords In Austronesian Languages, Waruno Mahdi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper investigates lexical borrowing from Austroasiatic into Austronesian languages. It does so for the following contact stages and interactions between these languages following the Austronesian overseas dispersal: (Stage 1) early contacts between Austroasiatic and Malayo-Polynesian particularly in the early Neolithic in the area encompassing mainland Southeast Asia, Northwest Kalimantan, and Sumatra, often resulting in the transmission of faunal terms; (Stage 2) interactions between speakers of Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Chamic languages during the early development of statehood; (Stage 3) exchange of terms in the period of early Khmer, Cham, and Malay kingdoms. Some of these transmissions can be shown to have …
Malay (And Javanese) Loanwords In Frederick De Houtman’S Malagasy Wordlist, Alexander Adelaar
Malay (And Javanese) Loanwords In Frederick De Houtman’S Malagasy Wordlist, Alexander Adelaar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Frederick de Houtman’s Malagasy language material (1603) consists of a wordlist and short prose texts. It represents a dialect spoken more than four hundred years ago in the Antongil Bay region on Madagascar’s northeast coast, which does not have a documented modern descendant. This chapter investigates Malay and (to a lesser extent) Javanese loanwords found in this material. Most of these loanwords are demonstrably old and can be dated to an era preceding the Malagasy migrations to eastern Africa thirteen centuries ago. They provide invaluable insights into the world of the early migrants to Madagascar and the degree of their …

Korean Loanwords In Indonesian; A Corpus-Based Study, Suhandano Suhandano, Ria Febrina, Arina Isti'anah, Hwang Who Young
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The borrowing of foreign lexicon in Indonesian is well documented. However, to date, research on Korean loanwords has remained unavailable. Against the backdrop of the Korean Wave (hallyu), this paper discusses the phonological adaptation of Korean loanwords in Indonesian and the way these loanwords contribute to the Indonesian lexical landscape. By collecting data on Korean culture from a selection of Instagram and Twitter (now X) accounts from the Indonesian community, our corpus shows that besides nouns, Korean loanwords also include adjectives and verbs. We identified 52 loanwords related to the domain of popular culture, including film, music, and …

Preparing Students With Intellectual Disability For Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Careers, Yewon Lee, Mariya T. Davis, Eric J. Lopez, Gulnoza Yakubova, Ingrid Cumming
All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)
Research indicates that outcomes for individuals with intellectual disability in post-secondary education (PSE), employment, and independent living lag in comparison to the general population. Students with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual disability, are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers and face barriers in accessing STEM courses and career opportunities. Furthermore, students with intellectual disability are disproportionately affected by the impact of unemployment and underemployment and overall quality of life. Providing students with intellectual disability with opportunities for STEM instruction and access to STEM careers could help them with employment in the field. Therefore, the call exists for …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation On Post-Stroke Aphasia: A Single-Subject Design Study, Aswathy Anakkathil Pradeep
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Background: Anomia or word-retrieval difficulty is a common long-term language impairment for individuals with post-stroke aphasia. Several behavioral interventions like semantic feature analysis (SFA) have shown positive results in naming outcomes, but continue to face difficulty in generalizing the treatment effects to untreated items. With recent advancements in technology, researchers are developing newer neuromodulation devices that aim at promoting neuroplasticity and neural reorganization in post-stroke individuals. Transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a relatively new technology that aims at stimulating the auricular branch of the vagal nerve to promote neuroplasticity. Studies have shown taVNS to potentially facilitate positive improvements …
Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan
Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan
LSU Master's Theses
The present thesis explores the intensification strategies employed by bilingual Spanish-English speakers in Southern Arizona, focusing on six distinct devices: lexical, phrasal, repetition, reformulation, hyperbole, and code-switching. While previous research has largely centered on adverbial and lexical intensifiers in monolingual contexts, this study broadens the scope by examining how bilingual speakers leverage their unique linguistic repertoire to amplify their speech. Using a sociopragmatic framework, the analysis reveals a marked preference for lexical intensification, which accounts for more than half of the recorded instances, with phrasal intensification and repetition following closely. Despite its lower frequency, code-switching stands out as a particularly …

Remote Community Energy Insecurity – Some Preliminary Observations On Electricity Disconnections, Energy Costs And The Transition To Renewables In The Kimberley, Kathryn Thorburn, Anna Dwyer, Stephen Kinnane
Talking Heads Seminar Series
As Australia adopts a Carbon Neutral future, energy insecurity in remote Indigenous Australia remains a major impediment to equity and development.
“Energy security” is the term used to describe reliability of electricity connection, and for the vast majority of Australians, energy security is not a challenge. This is not the case for many remote Indigenous households, including approx. 1200 in the Kimberley, who have a prepaid system for their power connection.
Electricity disconnections are disproportionately high for households that have a prepay system, where consumers must pay in advance for their power. When their credit runs out, they are immediately …

Using Neural Networks For Learning Arabic Morphophonological Rules, Yahya Ali Aseri Dr.
Using Neural Networks For Learning Arabic Morphophonological Rules, Yahya Ali Aseri Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This study aims to investigate the extent to which artificial neural network models, specifically sequence-to-sequence (Seq2seq) models, can recognize Arabic morphophonological changes that occur to the lemma. The study focuses on four phonetic changes governed by the rules of Arabic verbal phonology. The results of this study reveal the ability of these models to learn phonological rules and recognize the contexts that constrain them. The model achieves a high accuracy when we test it on new datasets not encountered during the training process. Such results demonstrate the ability of sequence-to-sequence (Seq2seq) models to generalize over the contexts and learn phonological …

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
A growing number of studies have explored how students prefer Native English Speaker Teachers (NESTs) (e.g. Elyas & Alghofaili, 2019). On the other hand, research has also emerged to investigate the qualities that can help to develop an effective English teacher (e.g. Tatipang, Manuas, Wuntu, Rorintulus & Lengkoan, 2022). This paper tries to examine English teachers’ attitudes towards native-speakerism and teaching effectiveness, from the perspective of NESTs and Non-native English Speaker Teachers (NNESTs) working in Saudi Arabia. The findings reveal that an effective English teacher, as perceived by the teachers, is flexible, motivated, self-confident and builds rapport with students. Teacher …

Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall
Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Desperate to decrease problematic student behaviors and increase desirable ones, many teachers employ traditional behaviorist models of discipline through the use of rewards or punishments. Although well-meaning and perhaps temporarily effective, these transactional barter systems can do more harm than good, especially for students who are trauma-impacted. By disrupting these practices that can re-traumatize students and embracing trauma-informed practices, teachers can extend transformative care to students and promote healing. The purpose of this qualitative investigation was to explore the manifestations of trauma on student classroom behavior and learning at a Title I public elementary school as well as multipronged elements …

Translating And Piloting A Community Based Diabetes Prevention Intervention For Vietnamese-Americans, Taylor Annabel Fischer, Cindy Cao, Tam Nguyen
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:
Diabetes is a serious chronic medical condition that has well-established links to devastating health outcomes including heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. A large multicenter randomized clinical control trial (n=3,234) called the Diabetes Prevention Program has demonstrated that a lifestyle intervention focused on modest weight loss through dietary changes and increased physical activity can reduce the development of diabetes by 58%. However efforts to translate these findings to understudied and underserved minority populations, such as Vietnamese Americans, are lacking. Work in this area is important because the diets and cultural norms among …
