From Misconception To Inclusion: Policy Pathways For The Integration Of Migrants And Social Cohesion In Egypt, Ghada Abdullah, Haytham Shoman, Riham Bahgat
Papers, Posters, and Presentations
Egypt is located at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, with over 9 million migrants, including around 1.5 million migrants living in vulnerable situations (IOM, 2022) and around 992,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers from 133 countries (UNHCR, 2025a) according to the latest available data. Public and policy discussions, however, remain shaped by the widespread stereotypes and confusion in distinguishing between migrants and refugees. This can promote exclusion, disinformation, and social tension. Misconceptions can hinder integration, limit access to services, and erode social cohesion in a country navigating economic constraints and adapting to ongoing demographic changes.

Gay Rodeos, Western Wear, And Unresolved Tensions In 21st-Century North America Cowboy Culture And Esthetics, Kelly L. Reddy-Best, Malena Silva
Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences
In the 1970s, activists founded the International Gay Rodeo Association in the North American Midwest, disrupting traditional heteronormative and hypermasculine norms within cowboy culture. In this research, we critically analyze the intersections of cowboy manifestations and twenty-first century LGBTQ+ communities in North American queer cowboy portrayals via the gay rodeo. Specifically, we examine how the gay rodeo creates space for LGBTQ+ style, fashion, and dress embodiments in relation to the longstanding, heteronormative Wild West hero of the late 1800s. We analyzed two types of primary sources: the 2014 film Queens & Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo and …
Bridging Generations: Shou-Yi Ch’En, Yanshuo Zhang, And Their Contribution To Asian Studies In American Higher Education, Zhen Zhou
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the lives and academic legacies of Dr. Shou-yi Ch’en (1899–1987) and Dr. Yanshuo Zhang (b. 1988), two Chinese scholars whose contributions have shaped Asian Studies in American higher education across nearly a century. Dr. Ch’en, educated in both China and the United States, played a foundational role in establishing Pomona College’s early Asian Studies program, fostering East–West intellectual exchange through extensive correspondence, and mentoring a generation of scholars. Dr. Zhang, also educated in China and the U.S., represents a new generation of interdisciplinary scholarship, focusing on China’s Qiang ethnic minority through oral history and a multicultural lens. …
Lived Narratives Of Educators: Emotional Intelligence For Dei In Early Adolescent Classrooms, Colette Bozek
Lived Narratives Of Educators: Emotional Intelligence For Dei In Early Adolescent Classrooms, Colette Bozek
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This study explores how teachers with high Emotional Intelligence (EQ) integrate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles into their instructional practices in early adolescent classrooms. Using narrative inquiry, the research examined the lived experiences of seventh- and eighth-grade educators in the Crestview Heights District (pseudonym), who were nominated for their emotionally responsive and inclusive teaching approaches. Through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews, the study captured how EQ-based strategies—such as self-regulation, empathy, storytelling, and culturally responsive pedagogy— shape classroom climates and influence student engagement, emotional development, and academic resilience. Findings revealed that educators with high EQ not only fostered safe and …
¡Adelante Mujer!: Testimonios Of Chicana And Latina High School Principals, Blanca Rocio Esquivel
¡Adelante Mujer!: Testimonios Of Chicana And Latina High School Principals, Blanca Rocio Esquivel
CGU Theses & Dissertations
As the Latinx student population in U.S. public schools grows incrementally, equitable representation in school leadership remains disproportionately limited. Despite accounting for over 25% of high school enrollments nationwide, Latinas hold only around 4-6% of public high school principal positions (NCES 2022). This lack of proportional leadership representation restricts a school system’s capacity to provide optimized culturally responsive environments, benefiting Latinx youth. Furthermore, it limits advancement opportunities for aspiring Chicana and Latina leaders despite research confirming their effectiveness in spearheading academic improvements. While past scholarship has broadly explored facilitators and barriers for women educational leaders, few studies specifically document the …
“Sé Exactamente De Donde Vine”: The Rivera Sisters And The Development Of A Lamanite Religio-Racial Identity In Salt Lake City’S Rama Mexicana, Kelsee Walker
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the religious participation of three immigrant sisters, Agustina Rivera de Torres, Dolores Rivera de Torres, and Domitila Rivera de Martínez, who were long-term members of Rama Mexicana, the first known Spanish-speaking congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah. During Rama Mexicana’s existence from the 1920s through 1960 (when it was converted from a branch into a ward), many of its members believed themselves to be descendants of Book of Mormon Lamanites through their indigenous heritage. This belief in a sacred Lamanite lineage, in part, allowed Rama Mexicana to become a place of …
What Did Independent Study Do For Me? Perspectives Of Latine Graduates Of A California Independent Study High School Program, Monique R. Escobedo
What Did Independent Study Do For Me? Perspectives Of Latine Graduates Of A California Independent Study High School Program, Monique R. Escobedo
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The independent study model in K-12 education has rarely been studied as an opportunity to meet the needs of diverse learners who require access to education outside of the traditional school day and brick and mortar settings (Anderson & Amesse, 2022). This multimethod study (Cram & Mertens, 2016) explores the experiences of 15 Latine graduates of an independent study high school that serves four counties in southern California. The study takes a critical approach both theoretically and methodologically to understand how the independent study model as carried out at the school site met the intersectional needs (e.g. cultural, linguistic, geographic, …
The Impact Of Llms Usage On Learning Outcomes For Software Development Students: A Focus On Prompt Engineering, Mohammed Owaidh Aljohani
The Impact Of Llms Usage On Learning Outcomes For Software Development Students: A Focus On Prompt Engineering, Mohammed Owaidh Aljohani
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates the impact of large language model (LLM) usage, specifically ChatGPT, on student learning outcomes in programming education. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data from students and qualitative interviews with instructors. The study addresses three research questions: (1) the effect of LLM usage on undergraduate students' learning outcomes, (2) the influence of prompt engineering skills on this relationship, and (3) instructors' perceptions on these relationships. Quantitative data were collected from 159 students across two Saudi universities using a structured online survey with sections covering demographic information, LLM usage, self-reported programming understanding, and prompt engineering …
Humility In Practice: Examining The Ethical Alignment Of Evaluator Values And Reporting, Darrel Skousen
Humility In Practice: Examining The Ethical Alignment Of Evaluator Values And Reporting, Darrel Skousen
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Despite evaluation's professed commitments to the values of equity, cultural responsiveness, and community partnership, one overall question remains unexamined: do evaluation reports reflect the values evaluators claim to hold as a profession? This study addresses this question by operationalizing and assessing evaluator humility; a concept frequently mentioned in evaluation ethics literature but rarely examined systematically in evaluation practice. Drawing from intellectual humility, cultural humility, virtue ethics, and evaluator competency frameworks, this study defines evaluator humility as an intentional, ongoing commitment to self-awareness of one's limitations, openness to learning, respect for others' expertise, and critical examination of power dynamics in evaluation …
Writing As Survival: Uncovering How Students Understand Antiracist Writing Assessment Practices In The Community College Composition Classroom, Jason Torres-Rangel
Writing As Survival: Uncovering How Students Understand Antiracist Writing Assessment Practices In The Community College Composition Classroom, Jason Torres-Rangel
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The theory and practice of antiracist writing assessment ecologies (Inoue and Poe, 2020) emerged as a way to address and counteract the white, middle-class language norms that have dominated ethnically and linguistically diverse writing classrooms since at least the 1960s. Though social-justice and equity-focused teaching practices have emerged to empower ethnically and linguistically diverse students, writing studies scholars have observed the notion of Standard English or “academic language” still persists and privileges white, middle-class ways of languaging (Greenfield, 2011; Elbow, 2012; Inoue, 2014; Baker-Bell, 2020). At best, students of ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds learn they must code-switch for writing …

Teacher Self-Efficacy And Resilience With Multilingual Learners: A Rural Secondary Story, Ellen Kae Horowitz
Teacher Self-Efficacy And Resilience With Multilingual Learners: A Rural Secondary Story, Ellen Kae Horowitz
CGU Theses & Dissertations
An educator’s effectiveness is critical for multilingual learners’ language learning and graduation. Educators of multilingual learners can be assessed for their self-efficacy and resiliency through their pre-service academic background, classroom practice, and community bonds, factors which have been studied by education researchers in California schools. However, there is limited research on educators of multilingual learners who serve rural secondary school sites. While there is a growing number of multilingual learners in rural sites, there is an invisibility of multilingual learners and the educators who serve them in education policy. This study explores the factors that rural Californian secondary educators from …
What We Talk About When We Talk About Race: Racial Discourses, Nationalism And Identity In Nineteenth Century Ireland, Timothy Werlinger
What We Talk About When We Talk About Race: Racial Discourses, Nationalism And Identity In Nineteenth Century Ireland, Timothy Werlinger
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The 19th century witnessed the rise of race and racism as a dominant framework of worldwide identity politics. These politics shaped the various social hierarchies and nationalist contexts across Europe and the world. Racial constructs adopted cultural, economic, and political components and did not rely exclusively on biological determinism. This had the effect of reinforcing or hardening boundaries between groups. This dissertation examines how racial identity was negotiated within an Irish context. It does this by considering social, scientific and nationalist discourses that engaged race as a device of inclusion and exclusion. By examining how racialized language permeated the Irish …

From ‘Me’ To ‘We’: How Perspective Shifts In Language Can Shape Children’S Judgments About Kindness, Caring, And Inclusivity, Ariana Orvell, Ella Simmons, Valerie Umscheid, Giulia Elli, Susan A. Gelman
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Core to kindness, compassion, or consideration of others is the ability to move beyond one's own perspective to imagine how someone else would think or feel. We reasoned that subtle shifts in language may facilitate this process, hypothesizing that speakers who adopted a generalized perspective (generic you, we) versus an individual (me) or specific (another's name) perspective would be viewed by children as more kind, compassionate, and generous. We conducted three experiments with children 6-9 years of age (N = 376) as well as adults (reported in the Supplemental Materials; N = 781) to test this hypothesis. In Experiment 1, …
Theories Of Child Development & Theories Of Religious And Spiritual Development (Rsd) In Children, Marjorie Lindner Gunnoe
Theories Of Child Development & Theories Of Religious And Spiritual Development (Rsd) In Children, Marjorie Lindner Gunnoe
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This essay introduces readers to the foundational theories of child development and the ways in which these theories have been applied or extended to children’s religious and spiritual development (RSD). By “foundational theories,” I mean the theories introduced in the opening chapters of developmental textbooks. This essay is not a theological critique of psychological theories (for this, see Gunnoe, 2022), nor a “state of the field” review of RSD (for this, see Boyatzis, 2023). Rather, it is a primer on the broad theoretical approaches that scaffold contemporary research on RSD.

45 Is The New 50: Evaluating Colorectal Cancer Screening Practices In Primary Care, Shemille Flinta, Madison Long, Brittany Wiggins
MSN Research Projects
Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for adults in the United States. There have been significant advances in preventative medicine for CRC, but screening completion lags behind other cancers, with only 61% reported adherence based on USPSTF guidelines. About two-thirds of the patients who are diagnosed with CRC already have distally spread disease. Detecting CRC early is vital, as early detection is linked to smaller tumor sizes and better outcomes. The current research study asked three questions with the objectives of assessing the frequency of CRC screening in primary care clinics, evaluating documented barriers to …
Liberatory Motherhood: A Framework & Praxis For Caring And Scholaring Otherwise In The Neoliberal Academy, Bhavika Sicka
Liberatory Motherhood: A Framework & Praxis For Caring And Scholaring Otherwise In The Neoliberal Academy, Bhavika Sicka
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
This article contributes to the emergent literature on motherhood in neoliberal higher education by proposing liberatory motherhood as a theoretical framework and praxis to deconstruct and reconstruct motherhood in the neoliberal academy. The author, an early-career immigrant woman scholar of color, uses feminist autoethnography to critically examine the disempowering, disembodying, and departicularizing effects of neoliberal subjectivation on motheracademics, foregrounding her lived experiences of caregiving in her analysis. She approaches academic motherhood through a prismatic lens of a pluralistic feminist rhetorical analysis that emphasizes interrelationality, tracing her experiences of caring and producing otherwise as a way to signal opportunities to reembody …

Filipinx Americans In U.S. Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Critical Study Of Student Engagement Using The Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Model, Gerald Ariston Doton Corporal
Filipinx Americans In U.S. Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Critical Study Of Student Engagement Using The Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Model, Gerald Ariston Doton Corporal
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
Who are Filipinx American college students and what are their experiences in U.S. higher education? The academic literature emphasizes the importance of disaggregating empirical data on sub-populations within the Asian American and Pacific Islander racial diaspora to fully understand their experiences in a variety of contexts (Teranishi et al., 2015). In higher education administration, there is limited empirical data on Asian American and Pacific Islander college students and it is further limited when examining specific racial subgroups, such as Filipinx Americans (Museus & Maramba, 2011). This has implications for administrators in U.S. postsecondary institutions, particularly regarding their capacity to appropriately …
Textual Sediments: Genre And The Planetary Novel, William Bowden
Textual Sediments: Genre And The Planetary Novel, William Bowden
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how twenty-first-century prose fiction navigates the ecological and temporal dimensions of planetary crisis. In response to accelerating pressures - climate change, ecological collapse, and the intensification of capitalist modernity - literary studies has turned increasingly to the planetary as a conceptual frame. Yet this shift has often outpaced the development of adequate critical vocabularies and narrative methodologies. By drawing on ecocriticism, narrative theory, phenomenology, and related fields, Textual Sediments proposes a new framework for reading what it terms the planetary novel: a sedimentary genre characterized by temporal layering, formal hybridity, and a recursive engagement with scale. Through …
International Students’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Institutional Diversity Initiatives And Self-Authorship Attainment: A Mixed Methods Study, Sandra Ayivor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Higher education institutions in the United States have responded to years of discrimination through several diversity initiatives. Although research has indicated the merits of such initiatives on student development, the outcomes are not uniform across all student populations. Moreover, student development discourses have often excluded the experiences of international students. Employing a convergent mixed methods approach, this study investigated the perceptions and experiences of international students at a flagship land-grant higher education institution in the Appalachian region of the United States regarding institutional diversity initiatives and their self-authorship based on some demographic characteristics (i.e., gender, age, marital status, religion, continent, …

A Critical Narrative Inquiry Into The Experiences Of Latino Male Graduate International Students Attending A Pwi, Cesar Miguel Castellon Gort
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This qualitative study examines how Latino male international graduate students navigate identity, belonging, and exclusion within U.S. higher education. Although international enrollment has increased, the experiences of this student population remain largely invisible in research and institutional practice. Guided by Intersectionality and Latino Critical Race Theory (LatCrit), this study investigates how intersecting dimensions of race, language, age, gender, and immigration status shape these students’ academic and social experiences. Using a critical narrative methodology, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and identity web exercises with four participants. Employing story chaining to link individual narratives, four central themes emerged: 1) Racialized and …
