The Ugly Side Of The Beautiful Game: The World Cup’S Impact On The Migrant Labor Crisis In Qatar And What It Means For The United States Of America As Future Hosts, Jack Richardson Nov 2024

The Ugly Side Of The Beautiful Game: The World Cup’S Impact On The Migrant Labor Crisis In Qatar And What It Means For The United States Of America As Future Hosts, Jack Richardson

Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law

The 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted in Qatar was mired in controversy.

From the corrupt bidding process to the sub-standard working and living

conditions, Qatar was heavily criticized for its management of the World Cup.

This paper explores two of the main critiques levied against the host nation:

its exploitation of migrant labor and the harsh and restrictive policies against

women and the LGBT community. Concerning migrant labor, the kafala

system is the primary cause of hardship. It is a labor sponsorship system, and

it requires migrant workers to invest time and resources to acquire a job in

Qatar, a …

Gray Advice, Keith Porcaro Nov 2024

Gray Advice, Keith Porcaro

Duke Law & Technology Review

Debates over economic protectionism or the technology flavor-of-the-month obscure a simple, urgent truth: people are going online to find help that they cannot get from legal and health professionals. They are being let down, by products with festering trust and quality issues, by regulators slow to apply consumer protection standards to harmful offerings, and by professionals loath to acknowledge changes to how help is delivered. The status quo cannot continue. Waves of capital and code are empowering ever more organizations to build digital products that blur the line between self-help and professional advice. For good or ill, “gray advice” is …

Programmes For The Protection Of Children Of Determination From Abuse And Neglect In The United Arab Emirates, Fakir Al Gharaibeh, Bakhita Alketbi

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the initiatives and policies implemented in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to protect Children of Determination (COD) from abuse and neglect. Despite global efforts to address child abuse, children with disabilities, referred to here as children of determination, remain particularly vulnerable. This paper explores the social framework, legal protections, prevention strategies, challenges, and necessary measures to ensure that such children are safe and empowered to protect themselves from abuse. The paper also explores approaches to enhancing the efficacy of the caregivers engaged with these children so that they can predict, prevent, and deal with incidents of abuse. …

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

In cities and towns across the United States, Asian Americans experienced the early 2020s health crisis as a dual pandemic of COVID-19 and anti-Asian racism. In Lowell, a large proportion of Cambodian American residents live in multi-generational households and are employed in working-class occupations with a high risk of exposure to the coronavirus. For this and other reasons, the pandemic had especially serious health and financial consequences for many members of the Cambodian American community. These pandemic challenges in Lowell mounted when a nationwide surge of anti-Asian racism swept through the city and surrounding areas.

Little information has been reported …

Lawyering In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Jonathan H. Choi, Amy B. Monahan, Daniel Schwarcz Nov 2024

Lawyering In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Jonathan H. Choi, Amy B. Monahan, Daniel Schwarcz

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

We conducted the first randomized controlled trial to study the effect of AI assistance on human legal analysis. We randomly assigned law school students to complete realistic legal tasks either with or without the assistance of GPT-4, tracking how long the students took on each task and blind-grading the results.

We found that access to GPT-4 only slightly and inconsistently improved the quality of participants’ legal analysis but induced large and consistent increases in speed. AI assistance improved the quality of output unevenly—where it was useful at all, the lowest-skilled participants saw the largest improvements. On the other hand, AI …

The Sec Spanish Consortium: Foundations For Linguistic Gratuity And Language Documentation Among Latinx Populations In New Destination Communities Of The U.S. South, Stephen Fafulas, Chad Howe, Rafael Orozco, Alicia Cipria, Erin O’Rourke, Nina Moreno, Matthew J. Van Hoose

Faculty Publications

Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered on scholarship and service involving Latinx populations in new destination communities of the U.S. South. We show that ongoing and future scholarly work in the U.S. South can act as a mechanism for documenting these emerging Latinx communities while simultaneously …

Application Of The Plithogenic Iadov Approach To Evaluate Satisfaction With The Implementation Of Indigenous Rights, Gıovanna Fernanda Vınueza Arroyo, Tanya Tupamara Camargo Martinez, Manuel Augusto Suarez Albıñol, Joffre R. Paladines Rodriguez

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

The present study addresses a crucial challenge in the evaluation of complex systems: the need to incorporate a holistic view that contemplates not only defined elements but also those that are intrinsically ambiguous or uncertain. The research focuses on the application of the Plithogenic IADOV approach, a model based on neutrosophic logic, to overcome the limitations of traditional methodologies that often fall short when addressing phenomena containing contradictory or unknown dimensions. In the existing literature, despite the wealth of approaches used for the evaluation of systems, there is a perceived lack of methodologies that effectively manage the indeterminacy inherent in …

Rights And Redress For Transgender Survivors Of Prison Rape: The Failures Of The Prison Rape Elimination Act, Natalie Hatton Nov 2024

Rights And Redress For Transgender Survivors Of Prison Rape: The Failures Of The Prison Rape Elimination Act, Natalie Hatton

William & Mary Law Review

This Note will argue that PREA [Prison Rape Elimination Act] provides meager protection and insufficient relief to transgender individuals who have been victims of sexual violence while incarcerated and that the existing mechanisms for relief are insufficient. Because PREA contains no private cause of action to allow survivors of rape to sue for violations of PREA, transgender rape survivors’ pain remains unredressed. To address this problem, this Note puts forth a combination of solutions to remove barriers to redress for transgender survivors of prison rape, including amending PREA to include a private cause of action and repealing provisions of the …

Dissertations

This study explored Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans (LGBT) employees’ perceptions and assessments of their firms’ organizational cultures and, in particular, the opportunities within the culture that can lead to upper management positions for those who identify as LGBT. The research sought to understand the extent to which inclusivity efforts are reflected in real career progression opportunities for openly LGBT employees working in San Diego County. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods research design, the study incorporated quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to achieve a comprehensive understanding of participant’s perspectives and experiences.
