Multi-Ion Permeation And Dynamic Conductance Modulation In Connexin Gap Junction Channels, Bassam G. Haddad, Daniel M. Zuckerman, Steve L. Reichow
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Gap junction channels formed by connexins mediate direct intercellular communication and are essential for electrical signaling and tissue homeostasis. Despite their large, solvent-accessible pores, connexin channels exhibit distinct conductance, selectivity, and rectification properties, but the molecular mechanisms underlying these behaviors remain incompletely understood. Here, we performed ~67 μs of all-atom computational electrophysiology simulations of connexin-46 (Cx46), connexin-50 (Cx50), and heterotypic Cx46/50 gap junction channels based on high-resolution open-state structures, enabling characterization of both ion permeation and long-timescale channel dynamics. Simulations reveal a multi-ion, multi-pathway permeation mechanism governed by isoform-specific energetic barriers and transient ion coordination sites that shape conductance and …

Scattering Phase Shift In Quantum Mechanics On Quantum Computers: Non-Hermitian Systems And Imaginary-Time Simulations, Peng Guo, Paul Levan, Frank Lee, Yong Zhao
Research & Publications
To overcome the fast oscillatory behavior of correlation functions for extracting scattering phase shift in real-time quantum simulations encountered in the work of Guo et al. [Phys. Rev. D 113, 054512 (2026)], we propose and test two solutions in the present work. One is to simulate Hermitian systems in imaginary time, and the other is to simulate non-Hermitian systems in real time. We demonstrate that both approaches lead to the problem of nonunitary quantum evolution that can be solved by combining two quantum algorithms: block encoding and Hadamard test. The combined quantum algorithm does not require midcircuit …

Background: Discharge delay in resource-constrained Intensive Care Units (ICUs) remains a concerning and persistent challenge, resulting in delayed ICU admissions and after-hours discharges. These delays are associated with adverse patient outcomes and system inefficiency. While centralised patient flow centres and other strategies have been implemented to address these issues, their impact on ICU discharge delays remains unexplored. To improve patient flow, it is essential to explore organisational barriers and facilitators to ICU discharge.
Objective: To identify system factors influencing ICU discharge in a tertiary Australian hospital.
Methods: A mixed-method study was conducted in a 32-bed tertiary ICU in Australia. Between …
The Freedom Myth: How Ski Culture's Hidden Conformity Reveals The Unconscious Power Of Brand Belonging, Isabel R. Phillips
The Freedom Myth: How Ski Culture's Hidden Conformity Reveals The Unconscious Power Of Brand Belonging, Isabel R. Phillips
University Honors Theses
Purpose: Ski culture sells freedom and enforces conformity. This review asks what unconscious behavioral patterns hold that contradiction in place, and how brands capitalize on it to manufacture belonging.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A narrative literature review across consumer psychology, behavioral neuroscience, sociology, and ski industry research. No primary data were collected. Four accounts of consistency-seeking are synthesized into one framework, then applied to three ski industry cases at ascending scales and tested against a comparative case from Spanish football.
Findings: Belonging is a conditioned response, and conditioning requires a stable stimulus. Consistency is therefore the precondition of belonging rather than a constraint …

Teachers’ Communicative Experiences Of Media And Information Literacy (Mil) In Peri-Urban Schools In The Southern Philippines: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Analysis, Author Information Removed
JMLE Submissions Open for Review
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) has become increasingly important as education responds to an increasingly complex information environment, yet less is known about how teachers experience and make sense of teaching it, particularly in resource-constrained contexts. Guided by Gadamerian hermeneutic phenomenology, this study explored the lived communicative experiences of seven Senior High School teachers from five peri-urban public schools in the Southern Philippines. In-depth interviews revealed three interconnected, culturally situated meanings: pagsugakod (carrying on amid uncertainty), pagtagad (attentive responsibility), and pagkabalaka (ongoing concern). Together, these meanings show how teachers navigate limited preparation, respond to students’ lived circumstances, and teach within …

Treaty Hierarchy And Legal Pluralism In Cross-Border Governance: Comparative Study Of Jordan And France, Rola Nael Salameh, Numan Ahmad Elkhatib, Rami Ali Daradkeh, Mohammad Sulieman Issa Alhelalat
Hasanuddin Law Review
This study addresses the constitutional ambiguity surrounding the hierarchical status and domestic application of international human rights treaties, particularly in legal systems where treaty incorporation lacks explicit constitutional regulation. Though earlier researches have discussed issues such as treaty incorporation and constitutionality, there has been little analysis of the comparative role played by courts in bridging the international and domestic legal systems. The study adopts a qualitative doctrinal and comparative legal methodology, analyzing constitutional provisions, legislative frameworks, and judicial decisions across Jordan, France, and selected Arab jurisdictions, including Egypt and Morocco. The findings reveal that France adopts a hierarchical model granting …

Judicial Departure And Legal Certainty: A Comparative Study Of Us And French Law, Faisal Oklah Khattar Shatnawi, Abdulwahab Abdullah Al-Maamari, Yassin Ahmad Al-Qudah, Radeyah Ahmad Mohammad Amayreh, Muneer Ali Muhammad Hulaiel
Hasanuddin Law Review
In any constitutional system, it is difficult to reconcile the need for legal certainty and constitutional adaptation when there is judicial departure from constitutional precedent. In this paper, We develop a functional comparative approach that explains how constitutional systems maintain legal certainty in the face of constitutional adaptation enabled by judicial departure from constitutional precedents. Using comparative analysis of United States Supreme Court jurisprudence (1954–2023) and French Constitutional Council rulings (1971–2023), We examine how such systems preserve their constitutional stability in spite of judicial change. Conservation governance is frequently characterized as a rule-based system in which bureaucratic actors enforce standardized regulations to protect biodiversity. In practice, however, conservation policies are implemented within socially contested landscapes. Strict regulatory enforcement may generate conflict and undermine governance objectives. Although public administration research underscores the importance of bureaucratic discretion in policy implementation, limited attention has been paid to its influence on environmental governance in developing countries. This article investigates discretionary practices in Indonesian conservation area management using an ethnographic approach that incorporates interviews, field observations, and case studies across multiple sites. The findings demonstrate that discretion occupies a central, …

Recently, Dynamic Graph Neural Networks (DGNNs) have become a potent candidate to model time-changing graphs, although other solutions, including Temporal Graph Networks (TGN), Evolving Graph Convolutional Networks (EvolveGCN), and Dynamic Self-Attention Networks (DySAT), still have significant barriers to scalability, computational efficiency, and temporal embedding drift. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper presents a Topology-Aware Graph Neural Network (TAGNN) model capable of incorporating graph-topology encoding and the spatiotemporal memory mechanisms into the learning process of dynamic node representation. The proposed framework includes three key components: (i) returns global and local structural data such as graph Laplacian-based feature transformations and position encodings, …
