The Impact Of Early Life Experiences On Math Confidence, Nhu X. Hin Aug 2025

The Impact Of Early Life Experiences On Math Confidence, Nhu X. Hin

Master's Theses

Students form beliefs about their academic abilities through a combination of emotional experiences and early learning environments. While prior research has documented how math anxiety can undermine performance and how early experiences with math-typed activities can foster positive attitudes, less is known about how these factors collectively influence students’ math confidence. The present study investigates how math anxiety, engagement in childhood math-typed activities, and perceived support for math-related learning contribute to college students’ confidence in their math abilities. Participants (N = 102) completed self-report measures assessing each of these constructs. A multiple regression analysis revealed that the three predictors collectively …

High Temperature In Potato: Plant Responses And Adaptive Cultivation Strategies To Increase Production, Siska Rahmayani Gultom, Jajang Sauman Hamdani, Kusumiyati

Jurnal Kultivasi

Climate change, with global temperatures rising by 1.09°C from 1850–1900 to 2011–2020, threatens potato production, a critical staple crop, by exceeding the optimal temperature range of 15–20°C. This review synthesizes over 45 peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 from Google Scholar and ScienceDirect to evaluate the physiological, morphological, and tuber quality responses of potatoes to high temperatures and to identify adaptive cultivation strategies for sustainable production. High temperatures reduce photosynthetic efficiency through chlorophyll degradation and stomatal closure, increase respiration, and divert photosynthates to vegetative growth, leading to 18–32% yield losses globally by the 2050s. Heat-tolerant varieties, such as Atlantic …

Low-Tech Seed Enhancement Technology Could Improve Seedling Establishment Of Longleaf Pine Understory Perennial Forbs, Madeline E. Schmuck, Michael C. Disilvestro, Danny J. Gustafson

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Reintroducing native plants into restoration and revegetation projects could increase plant species diversity, increase floral resources for pollinators, and positively affect trophic-level interactions in the community. Direct seeding in restoration projects has generally had poor success rates due to biotic and abiotic factors, leading to significant seed wastage of the already insufficient native seed supply. Seed balls (aka seed aggregates, seed bombs, and seed pellets) are a low-cost, low-tech seed enhancement technology. The seeds are encased in a soil and clay matrix, providing good seed-soil contact, controlling seed planting depth, nutrients, and protection from seed predators. We conducted a greenhouse …

Investigating Techniques To Optimise The Layout Of Turbines In A Windfarm Using A Quantum Computer, James Hancock, Matthew Craven, Craig Mcneile, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper investigates Windfarm Layout Optimization (WFLO), where we formulate turbine placement considering wake effects as a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem. Wind energy plays a critical role in the transition toward sustainable power systems, but the optimal placement of turbines remains a challenging combinatorial problem due to complex wake interactions. With recent advances in quantum computing, there is growing interest in exploring whether hybrid quantum-classical methods can provide advantages for such computationally intensive tasks. We investigate solving the resulting QUBO problem using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) implemented on Qiskit’s quantum computer simulator, employing a quantum noise-free, gate-based …

Multi-Objective Optimisation Of Floating Offshore Wind Farms Based On A Real-World Case Study, Pawel Manikowski, David Walker, Matthew Craven

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, we used real data to predict the position of the floating wind turbines due to three external forces: wind, wave and current. We analysed data provided by energy company Equinor and applied two machine-learning techniques: Multilayer Perceptron and Random Forest. After demonstrating that machine learning models failed, we used a simple linear regression model and optimisation approach to solve the multi-objective optimisation problem. We minimised the perimeter of the wind farm and maximised its power output by applying the multi-objective optimisation algorithm NSGA-II. We also investigated how changing the length of mooring lines affected the optimisation. We …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project examines lumber and naval stores workers from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries along the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. After the Civil War, lumbermen who had exhausted the timber supply in the North and Midwest looked to the South’s pine forests as the national demand for lumber and lumber products increased. The creation of the lumber and naval stores industries along the Gulf Coast pine belt, however, coincided with labor abuses, including the convict lease system and debt peonage. Moreover, company owners and management structured the industries in a way that perpetuated the …

Modeling Dynamic And Static Earthquake-Induced Stress Changes Across Fault And Magmatic Systems: Insights From Finite Element Simulations, Luis Ivan Bazan Flores

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Earthquakes generate stress perturbations capable of influencing adjacent faults and magmatic systems across a range of spatial and temporal scales. This work investigates how dynamic and static earthquake-induced stress changes affect geological structures in two different tectonic settings: major continental fault systems and subduction zones. The first part of this study examines dynamic rupture interactions between the southern San Andreas Fault and an adjacent normal fault beneath the Salton Sea. Our results indicate that dynamic rupture simulations informed by high-resolution seismic reflection profiles of the normal fault help us uncover the direction of rupture propagation of past events on the …

Accelerating Gnn Inference On Multi-Core Systems, Binglin Ji

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are becoming increasingly popular, with their applications expanding across diverse domains. As the scale of graph data continues to grow, including larger numbers of nodes, edges, and higher embedding dimensions, standardized libraries such as DGL and PyG have been developed to facilitate GNN computation. However, with the rapid increase in the number of processor cores and the evolution of multi-core architectures, these libraries often show poor scalability and fail to execute GNN inference efficiently on the latest multi-core systems, particularly those with upwards of a hundred cores. To address this limitation, we present FGI, a Fast …

Coolness, Leisure, And Power : The Development Of Mokanshan Summer Resort In Modern China, 1890–1937, Xuyan Pan

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The concept of "coolness" (清涼) embodied fundamentally different bodily and cultural experiences in Chinese and Western traditions. With the introduction of Western-style summer resorts by foreign missionaries in the 1890s, these divergent understandings converged and clashed in new spatial forms. This study examines Mokanshan (莫干山), located in Zhejiang province and recognized as one of the Republican era’s “Four Great Summer Retreats” (民國四大避暑地), as a paradigmatic case of transnational leisure. Initially developed by missionaries as a health-oriented retreat, a transnationally managed enclave, and a nostalgic “overseas home” for expatriates, Mokanshan reflected a hybrid model of modern leisure shaped by foreign institutions. …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Nearby Branch Closures And Small Business Growth, Benjamin Ranish, Andrea Stella, Jeffery Y. Zhang Aug 2025

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Nearby Branch Closures And Small Business Growth, Benjamin Ranish, Andrea Stella, Jeffery Y. Zhang

Law & Economics Working Papers

Since 2010, the total number of commercial bank branches in the United States has decreased by about 20%. Do branch closures meaningfully affect economic activity? We investigate the impact of branch closures on small businesses, whose access to credit may be facilitated through local relationships with banks. Using exogenous variation in closures related to mergers and acquisitions, we show that the closure of nearby bank branches leads to decreased small business employment growth and entry while increasing business exit. Our results are robust to variations in our measure of employment, proximity, and construction of the instrument. We use subsample analyses …
