Scaling Pedestrian Crossing Analysis To 100 U.S. Cities Via Ai-Based Segmentation Of Satellite Imagery, Marcel E. Moran, Arunav Gupta, Jiali Qian, Debra Laefer

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Accurately measuring street dimensions is essential to evaluating how their design influences both travel behavior and safety. However, gathering street-level information at city-scale with precision is difficult given the quantity and complexity of urban intersections. To address this challenge in the context of pedestrian crossings — a crucial component of walkability — we introduce a scalable and accurate method for automatically measuring crossing distance at both marked and unmarked crosswalks, applied to America’s 100 largest cities. First, OpenStreetMap coordinates were used to retrieve satellite imagery of intersections throughout each city — totaling roughly three million images. Next, Meta’s Segment Anything …

Assessing Abuse And Neglect In U.S. Nursing Homes: A Comparative Analysis Across Pre-, During, And Post-Pandemic Periods, Katherine Gane Jan 2026

Assessing Abuse And Neglect In U.S. Nursing Homes: A Comparative Analysis Across Pre-, During, And Post-Pandemic Periods, Katherine Gane

Theses and Dissertations

Nursing homes are among the most closely regulated providers in the U.S. healthcare system, with both federal and state agencies working together to monitor care and help protect residents. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, introduced unprecedented challenges for facilities and survey agencies alike, disrupting normal operations, limiting in-person visits, and temporarily shifting regulatory priorities. The purpose of this study was to examine how these pandemic-related disruptions were reflected in the severity and reporting patterns of substantiated abuse and neglect deficiencies in U.S. nursing homes. Using publicly available data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), this study analyzed 39,607 …

Multilevel Analysis Of The Food And Physical Activity Environment And Adult Obesity Across U.S. Counties And States, Ann Mary Abraham, Michael D Swartz, Alexandra E Van Den Berg, Stephen H Linder Jan 2026

Multilevel Analysis Of The Food And Physical Activity Environment And Adult Obesity Across U.S. Counties And States, Ann Mary Abraham, Michael D Swartz, Alexandra E Van Den Berg, Stephen H Linder

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Adult obesity rates have risen steadily across the United States over the past decade, with more than 40% of adults affected. Persistent geographic and demographic disparities exist in obesity prevalence across the nation. While prior research has examined individual or environmental associated factors of obesity, limited studies have addressed both physical activity and food environments across the nation using multilevel approaches. This cross-sectional ecological study (2014-2024) used a two-level random intercept model to assess the association between county- and state-level factors and adult obesity prevalence across over 3000 U.S. counties nested within 51 states. County-level associated factors included food insecurity, …

Review Of Bootstrap Applications, Joshua Russell Jan 2026

Review Of Bootstrap Applications, Joshua Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

We investigate the bootstrap methodology and current applications. The bootstrap is a non-parametric resampling method that has universal applicability thanks to the statistical concepts of weak convergence, the law of large numbers, and the central limit theorem. Modern applications of bootstrap methodology have demonstrated time and time again that it is computationally efficient and robust. The earliest days of the bootstrap saw it validated by generating statistics, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests. It is important to note the universal application and efficiency of the bootstrap, especially when researchers are tempted to utilize the more financially and computationally expensive techniques of …

Finite Element Model Of Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge, Patrick Boateng Jan 2026

Finite Element Model Of Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge, Patrick Boateng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques based on ambient vibration measurements offer a non-destructive and effective way to assess the dynamic behavior and condition of bridge struc-tures. This study describes the development and analysis of a detailed finite element model of the Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge, a cable-supported pedestrian bridge at the University of Mem-phis. The numerical model was created in SAP2000 using construction drawings and includes the reinforced concrete tower, steel floor beams, concrete deck slab, and stay cable system with the correct material properties and boundary conditions. Modal analysis was conducted to find the natural frequencies and mode shapes …

Determination Of Residues Of 9 Herbicides Of International Concern In Dairy Products By High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Yan Wanying, He Minheng, Li Mingming, Huang Shiying, Chen Wenjing, Shen Yingtao, Huang Jiale Jan 2026

Determination Of Residues Of 9 Herbicides Of International Concern In Dairy Products By High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Yan Wanying, He Minheng, Li Mingming, Huang Shiying, Chen Wenjing, Shen Yingtao, Huang Jiale

Food and Machinery

[Objective] To establish a rapid and precise determination method for 9 herbicides (asulam, hexazinone, indaziflam, norflurazon, pyrasulfotole, pyroxasulfone, sulfosulfuron, tebuthiuron, and tepraloxydim) in dairy products that are of international concern but without established maximum residue limits (MRLs) in China. [Methods] The samples are ultrasonically extracted with acetonitrile-acetone mixed reagent (v∶v=8∶2), and the extract is purified by the dispersed solid-phase extraction adsorbents Florisil, N-propylethylenediamine (PSA), and anhydrous MgSO4. A high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method is established for determination. [Results] The nine herbicides are completely separated within 7 min. Their linear relationships are good within the range of 2.00~100 …
