Recent aircraft observations of marine stratocumulus clouds consistently showed that cloud microphysical relationships vary with altitude, indicating inhomogeneous mixing characteristics near cloud top and homogeneous mixing characteristics in mid-levels of clouds. Here, we conduct model intercomparison of an idealized, non-precipitating stratocumulus cloud to evaluate model consistency and examine whether simulations can reproduce the observed mixing characteristics. The results show that eleven large-eddy simulations with various dynamics and microphysics schemes show good agreement on the thermodynamical, microphysical, and dynamical properties of the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer in a steady state. The inter-model spread in steady-state liquid water path is significantly reduced compared …

Ethical Controversies In Organ Procurement: A National Survey On Public Perceptions Of Thoracoabdominal Normothermic Regional Perfusion, Trevor M Bibler, Jill Oliver Robinson, Adam Omelianchuk, Tariq Nisar, Savitri Fedson, Ariel N Levchenko, Amy L Mcguire Apr 2026

Ethical Controversies In Organ Procurement: A National Survey On Public Perceptions Of Thoracoabdominal Normothermic Regional Perfusion, Trevor M Bibler, Jill Oliver Robinson, Adam Omelianchuk, Tariq Nisar, Savitri Fedson, Ariel N Levchenko, Amy L Mcguire

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion (TA-NRP) would likely expand the quantity and quality of organs procured after controlled circulatory death donation in the United States, yet its ethical permissibility remains contested. We surveyed a representative sample of US adults (n = 975) with the goal of assessing their perspectives on the ethical permissibility of TA-NRP. After reading a neutral description of TA-NRP, participants judged its permissibility, reviewed 5 critic and 5 supporter arguments (in random order), and chose which argument they found most convincing. Multivariable logistic regression examined predictors of agreeing with critics. Before exposure to the arguments, 51.5% stated that …

Background and purpose: Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic acidosis and Stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare multisystem mitochondrial disorder with clinical heterogeneity. Diagnostic criteria and management strategies for MELAS and mitochondrial stroke-like episodes (SLE) remain inconsistent. This work provides international consensus recommendations on the definition, diagnosis, and management of MELAS and SLE in pediatric and adult populations.

Methods: An international Delphi consensus process was conducted within the European Reference Network for Neuromuscular Diseases (ERN EURO-NMD), in collaboration with the US Mitochondrial Medicine Society, the ERN for Hereditary Metabolic Disorders (MetabERN), and patient representatives. Following a systematic literature review, 54 statements addressing diagnostic …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We report a complex case of recurrent, metastatic sex cord stromal tumor involving the pelvic vasculature and spinal nerves. Posterior and anterior approaches were required with redo iliac artery reconstruction using a temporary, redundant aortoiliac to right external iliac artery graft and iliocaval venous reconstruction. After completion of tumor resection from nerve structures, reconstruction of the right iliac veins was completed and the redundant aortoiliac arterial graft was shortened. The redundant graft minimized ischemia time, enabling meticulous dissection and tumor removal. This case underscores the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in managing rare, aggressive malignancies with complex vascular and neural involvement.

Confronting Domestic Violence, Jessica Miles Apr 2026

Confronting Domestic Violence, Jessica Miles

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court's modern Confrontation Clause jurisprudence has created a morass with profound consequences for domestic violence prosecutions. Prior Confrontation Clause scholarship from a domestic violence survivor advocacy perspective has favored prosecutions regardless of survivors' wishes or participation. This Article takes a different view based on a growing body of scholarship arguing that carceral approaches have failed to reduce rates of domestic violence and resulted in negative collateral consequences for many survivors, particularly those from historically marginalized groups. It makes a novel contribution by drawing on the Confrontation Clause as a mechanism to discourage domestic violence prosecutions when not desired …

Sex, Gender, And The Blogosphere: Looking Back At The Feminist Law Professors Blog, 2006-2024, Bridget J. Crawford

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The Feminist Law Professors blog began in 2006 as a modest effort to make feminist legal scholars more visible to one another and to the broader world. What emerged from this effort was a dynamic, collectively imagined space that bore witness to generational shifts in feminist legal thought, the rise and fall of blogging culture, and the enduring challenges of feminist community-building. This Essay reflects on the origins, evolution, and legacies of the Feminist Law Professors blog, situating it within its legal, cultural, and technological moments. It also offers my reflections--as one of two blog editors--on the risks and rewards …

Capacity For What? Elon Musk’S Doge, Public Value Destruction And The Darkside Of Policy Capacity, Adam Wellstead, Michael Howlett Apr 2026

Capacity For What? Elon Musk’S Doge, Public Value Destruction And The Darkside Of Policy Capacity, Adam Wellstead, Michael Howlett

Michigan Tech Publications

Purpose – This paper addresses a missing element in Wu et al.’s (2015) ninefold policy capacity framework: the ‘capacity for what’ question. Specifically, it explores the objectives toward which policy capacities are directed, focusing on how government capabilities and competencies can be utilized to either create or destroy public value. Design/methodology/approach – Through a literature review, the paper establishes the connections between public value and policy capacity. An illustrative case of value destruction, specifically, the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) experience during the early second term of the Trump administration, is used to demonstrate how policy capacity can be …

Evaluating The Collision-Coalescence Process In Idealized Cloud Convection Using Large-Eddy Simulations With Lagrangian Microphysics, Yangze Ren, Kamal Kant Chandrakar, Fan Yang, Raymond Shaw Apr 2026

Evaluating The Collision-Coalescence Process In Idealized Cloud Convection Using Large-Eddy Simulations With Lagrangian Microphysics, Yangze Ren, Kamal Kant Chandrakar, Fan Yang, Raymond Shaw

Michigan Tech Publications

Drizzle initiation through the collision and coalescence of cloud droplets plays a crucial role in warm cloud precipitation. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the influence of collisional growth on the droplet size distribution can be quantified by a non‐dimensional drizzle number (Dz). Here, large‐eddy simulations with Lagrangian microphysics are employed to evaluate the theory by simulating a tall convection‐cloud chamber under various conditions. Results show that the smaller the Dz, the larger the impact of collisions on the right tail of the droplet size distribution, consistent with the theory. The simulations confirm that the collision rate can be estimated from …

Scraping Bad: The Case For A Unified Scraping Framework, Eunchong Moses Park Apr 2026

Scraping Bad: The Case For A Unified Scraping Framework, Eunchong Moses Park

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

This Note explores the growing legal and regulatory landscapes of web scraping in the United States and argues that web scraping should be regulated through a unified federal framework tailored to its unique technological and economic realities. Web scraping allows organizations to collect massive amounts of data essential to their operational needs—often without the consent of data holders. Thus, web scraping has become a powerful engine of innovation used across virtually every sector of the economy but with a serious risk to privacy and property interests. Yet the current U.S. legal framework lacks a coherent regulating structure. Courts and litigants …

The Racial Implications For Black Claimants At The Federal Arbitration Act's Centennial, Michael Z. Green Apr 2026

The Racial Implications For Black Claimants At The Federal Arbitration Act's Centennial, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

On February 12, 1925, when President Calvin Coolidge signed into law an Act to make arbitration agreements "valid, irrevocable, and enforceable," no person could have expected that this new statute would ever apply to claims by Black litigants. A century later, that law, now referred to as the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), has evolved to encompass disputes involving a broad array of claimants and processes where businesses enforce pre-dispute agreements to arbitrate. In examining whether Black claimants (businesses, consumers, and importantly, workers) may benefit from using arbitration, this Article investigates how the FAA, as enacted, never intended to address their …

Trust, Transparency, And The Fragile Promise Of Data Governance In The Era Of Modernization, Fallon Julia Cochlin, Regen Weber-Fares, Jami Crespo, William M. Sage, Cason Daniel Schmit Apr 2026

Trust, Transparency, And The Fragile Promise Of Data Governance In The Era Of Modernization, Fallon Julia Cochlin, Regen Weber-Fares, Jami Crespo, William M. Sage, Cason Daniel Schmit

Faculty Scholarship

Public health data modernization in the United States has accelerated since COVID-19 exposed systemic weaknesses in fragmented data infrastructure and governance. Technical solutions have advanced, but legal and relational barriers still complicate data sharing across jurisdictions. Traditionally, interjurisdictional data sharing has relied on individually negotiated Data Use Agreements (DUAs), a process that is both resource-heavy and often opaque. To address this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have proposed a Core DUA to standardize terms and reduce administrative burden. However, its success depends on trust — a fragile foundation increasingly strained by politicization, perceived lack of transparency, and controversial …

Not My Fault: An Original Play And Analysis, Samira Gharavi-Nouri

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

“For there is no friend like a sister / In calm or stormy weather” (Goblin Market, lines 562-563) I grew up with 1, 2, 3 sisters and even though my childhood was shaped by countless fights, hair pulling and scratching, it was equally formed by built-in best friends, advisors and bodyguards who would go to bat for me without hesitation. There are not many people you can fight with like no other on one day and be best friends with again the next without holding a grudge. While I can count myself lucky to have had this experience of unconditional …

Do Nothing Preemption, Lauren R. Roth Apr 2026

Do Nothing Preemption, Lauren R. Roth

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Do

nothing. That mandate from President Trump and the courts to the federal bureaucracy is the motivation behind budget and staffing cuts throughout the Executive Branch. Much has been said about the impact of these cuts on government services, with the White House encouraging states to pick up the tab and take responsibility for programs including education, Medicaid, and disaster relief. But what happens when broad preemption prevents states from picking up the slack in the face of federal retrenchment and inaction? In this Article, I define do nothing preemption as the inability of federal agencies to regulate, either because …

Trust: The Invisible Force Behind Effective Leadership During Times Of Change, Lindsay Atoro Apr 2026

Trust: The Invisible Force Behind Effective Leadership During Times Of Change, Lindsay Atoro

M.S. in Leadership

Workplace change is constant, yet most change management models focus on logistical, financial, and operational factors, overlooking the human aspects. Strategies to support employees often neglect the critical role of trust in effectiveness and success. To more deeply explore the role of trust, this study combined a comprehensive literature review with leader interviews to compare theoretical findings with real-world practices. Results revealed that while leaders acknowledged the importance of trust in leading teams through change, fewer than half explicitly identified it without prompting. Trust was consistently referenced, though often implicitly, reflecting a pattern in the literature where trust was acknowledged …

Evolution As Spatial Projection, Charles H. Smith, Ngoc Nguyen Apr 2026

Evolution As Spatial Projection, Charles H. Smith, Ngoc Nguyen

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

A theory combining explanations for the nature of three-dimensional systems and evolutionary processes is advanced, set to a geometric simulation, and then discussed in the context of several empirical studies bearing on its validity. The concept “evolution” is first discussed, then related to Baruch de Spinoza’s ideas on natural philosophy, including his concept of the conatus. These ideas are then extended by posing the possible existence of a general form of natural systems subsystemization leading to the extended space condition. A geometrical/topological simulation study projecting spatial relations among subsystem structures interpretable through entropy maximization and multidimensional scaling methods is presented, …

Writ And Roe: How And Why American Evangelicals Responded To Abortion And Roe V. Wade (1960-Present), Caiden Hooks

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Beginning in 1925, evangelical Protestants largely left American politics. During the late 1960s, the pro-life movement was a largely liberal, Roman Catholic cause focused on reversing liberal state abortion laws. After the Supreme Court's ruling on abortion in Roe v. Wade (1973), the political landscape changed dramatically. Over the next decade-and-a-half, evangelicals, including Southern Baptists, re-entered American politics, eventually becoming the face of the pro-life movement and the conservative Religious Right. Southern Baptists in particular, were motivated to join the pro-life movement by statements and material put out by prominent evangelicals, including books, documentaries, and biblical commentary material that laid …

Imidacloprid Effects On The Survival And Cutaneous Microbiome Of Northern Leopard Frogs, Evelyn Margaret Osterloo Apr 2026

Imidacloprid Effects On The Survival And Cutaneous Microbiome Of Northern Leopard Frogs, Evelyn Margaret Osterloo

Honors Thesis

Amphibians are experiencing population declines due to habitat loss, climate change, and diseases, particularly chytridiomycosis caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Protection from this fungal infection stems from the cutaneous microbiome. Pesticides have been shown to affect amphibians in a variety of ways, including reducing survival, locomotor performance, and accumulation in body tissues. Pesticides may also lead to changes in the cutaneous microbiome affecting amphibians who rely on these organisms as an anti-Bd defense mechanism. To investigate the effect of imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, Northern Leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) were subjected to sublethal concentrations (control = …
