Pastoral Listening Skills Training In The Black Baptist Church: Equipping Clergy To Better Support Congregants, Regina Pair Allen

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

This study engages a historical survey of qualitative studies of perspectives of Black pastors regarding pastoral care, examining various avenues for training in pastoral listening and the role of ministers as theological clinicians in supporting church ministries and community needs. The findings highlight the ongoing need for professional development among pastors as primary educators and theological clinicians. The study underscores the importance of equipping Black Baptist pastors to address the clinical pastoral needs of African American congregants. The significance to this field of study is providing Black Baptist clergy with practical skills and tools, grounded in theological principles, to better …

Amefricanity: Latin America From A Black And Indigenous Perspective, Carolina Freitas

Bridgewater Review

Although the number of immigrants coming from Latin America to United States decreased in the last years, due to the aggressive immigration policies implemented by the current federal administration, the Latin American diaspora has been the main immigration driver to this country since the 1970s. According to the Migration Policy Institute, in 2023, nearly 45 per cent of immigrants in US (21.5 million people) reported having Hispanic or Latino origins.1 These facts alone have made Latin American one of the most significant cultural identities in US today. The decisive Latino vote in the last presidential election has come to reinforce …

Ta-Nehisi Coates’S The Message, Robin Tierney Apr 2026

Ta-Nehisi Coates’S The Message, Robin Tierney

Bridgewater Review

Ta-Nehisi Coates’s The Message came out in the fall of 2024. It had been ten years since The Atlantic article, “The Case for Reparations,” had propelled him into the national spotlight. Nine years since, his Between the World and Me won a National Book Award and began to be read in many U.S. high schools. Both of these works examined the history and realities of African Americans in the United States. The pillars of Coates’s journalism include examining historical documents, invoking African American intellectual traditions, and travelling to meet with people — frequently elderly — who personally experienced the travails …

Cognitive Warfare: Generative Ai, False Realities, And International Humanitarian Law, Gary Corn Apr 2026

Cognitive Warfare: Generative Ai, False Realities, And International Humanitarian Law, Gary Corn

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

This paper, written as a draft chapter for the Lieber Institute for Law and Land Warfare's forthcoming book on International Law and Artificial Intelligence in Armed Conflict: The AI-Cyber Interplay, explores the IHL implications of a specific subfield or category of AI—Generative AI (GenAI). This new and rapidly evolving technology does not merely analyze or classify data; it also generates original image, audio, and video content. This synthetic content can be highly deceptive and manipulative, as in the case of so-called “deepfakes.” Combined with other information and communications technologies (ICT) and AI capabilities, GenAI has the potential to drastically transform …

Speculative Spies: The Pinkerton National Detective Agency, Business, And Labor Conflict In The Gilded Age, Luke M. Gibbs Apr 2026

Speculative Spies: The Pinkerton National Detective Agency, Business, And Labor Conflict In The Gilded Age, Luke M. Gibbs

Tenor of Our Times

The Pinkerton Agency molded into an “arm of capital” used by the wealthy against labor during the Gilded Age. However, such a transition seems confusing given the life of the company’s founder. Allan Pinkerton, once a champion of workers’ rights in his home country of Scotland, seemingly used his agency to side with the wealthy elite. In explaining these shifts, historian Sean Paul O’Hara agrees with a “profits and negative image” narrative. The poor financial position of the agency, coupled with a battered reputation resulting from failures in the American West, would be remedied through the lucrative business that was …

From Stone Campbell To Brick And Mortar: A Look Into The Origins Of Restoration Colleges, Donald C. Matthews Apr 2026

From Stone Campbell To Brick And Mortar: A Look Into The Origins Of Restoration Colleges, Donald C. Matthews

Tenor of Our Times

This article examines the paradoxical rise of Bible colleges within the Stone Campbell Restoration Movement between the early nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. Founded upon a principled rejection of human institutions, creeds, and ecclesiastical hierarchies, the movement nonetheless came to rely upon organized centers of learning to preserve its theological identity in a rapidly modernizing America. Tracing the movement’s intellectual roots through Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell, the article explores how early Restoration leaders reconciled anti-institutional convictions with an emerging commitment to disciplined biblical education. Particular attention is given to Bethany College and its influence on second-generation …

The Emergence Of Resistance Theory And Constitutionalist Thought: Political Thought In The French Wars Of Religion As A Response To A Body Politic In Crisis, Jacob Rooney Apr 2026

The Emergence Of Resistance Theory And Constitutionalist Thought: Political Thought In The French Wars Of Religion As A Response To A Body Politic In Crisis, Jacob Rooney

Tenor of Our Times

During the French Wars of Religion, both Huguenots and Catholics developed different models of resistance theory, as a response to the political and social crises that had been plaguing France. As a result of this, the theory, practice, and perception of French kingship, was greatly challenged and transformed, as both religious factions expressed their anxieties by calling for resistance against the monarch. Their conclusions, although often antithetical, draw upon a shared metaphor of the body, as a representation of the body politic. Their shared usage of this metaphor, was accompanied by a shared desire to see resistance against a tyrannical …

“Opening Up The Flood Gates:” A Review Of The International Response To The Hungarian Refugee Crisis 1956-57., Jacob N. Anderson Apr 2026

“Opening Up The Flood Gates:” A Review Of The International Response To The Hungarian Refugee Crisis 1956-57., Jacob N. Anderson

Tenor of Our Times

Following the suppressed Hungarian Revolution in 1956, there was a massive emigration from Hungary to surrounding European nations and the United States to escape oppression under the new Soviet regime. As a result, many of those nations faced large humanitarian debates about accepting refugees from Soviet tyranny and were forced to alter their refugee and immigration policy. Some of these alterations appear to be sincere and reflect popular sentiment, but some appear to be simply a false act of solidarity amidst the international stage, reflecting very conservative ethnic and religious reservations.

Semantic Entanglement In Vector-Based Retrieval: A Formal Framework And Context-Conditioned Disentanglement Pipeline For Agentic Rag Systems, Nick Loghmani Apr 2026

Semantic Entanglement In Vector-Based Retrieval: A Formal Framework And Context-Conditioned Disentanglement Pipeline For Agentic Rag Systems, Nick Loghmani

iSchool - All Scholarship

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems deployed in agentic environments depend on the geometric properties of vector representations to retrieve contextually appropriate evidence for autonomous reasoning. When source documents conflate multiple topics within contiguous text regions, standard vectorization pipelines produce embedding spaces in which semantically distinct content occupies overlapping geometric neighborhoods — a condition we term semantic entanglement. This paper formalizes semantic entanglement as a model-relative measure of cross-topic overlap, defines an Entanglement Index (EI) as a quantitative proxy, and argues that higher EI is associated with reduced attainable Top-K retrieval precision under cosine similarity retrieval. We introduce the Semantic Disentanglement …

The Effects Of Body Mass Index On Fertility And In Vitro Fertilization, Morgan R. Kidd Apr 2026

The Effects Of Body Mass Index On Fertility And In Vitro Fertilization, Morgan R. Kidd

Honors College Theses

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most widely used type of assisted reproductive technology for treating infertility arising from a number of conditions. As obesity rates continue to climb in the United States, infertility has been discovered to have a direct correlation. Individuals that fall below or above the healthy body mass index range are found to have disrupted regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, resulting in diminished reproductive health. Those that are diagnosed as infertile due to conditions caused by the effects of low body mass index or high body mass index may seek assisted reproductive technologies to intervene in achieving …

Book Review - The Fast Track, Darlene A. Kluka Apr 2026

Book Review - The Fast Track, Darlene A. Kluka

Global Sport Business Journal

This review examines The Fast Track by Jane McManus, a timely analysis of the commercial rise of women’s sport in the United States. McManus challenges the persistent narrative of low consumer demand, reframing it as a consequence of historical underinvestment and limited infrastructure. Drawing on industry data, stakeholder interviews, and economic analysis, the book highlights key growth drivers, including media rights, sponsorship alignment, and athlete-led digital visibility. It also situates these developments within broader social and political contexts, addressing issues of equity, representation, and governance. While primarily U.S.-focused, the book offers a compelling market diagnosis and underscores women’s sport as …

Child Support Factory: Racist History, Harm, And Unconstitutionality Of The Child Support System's Contractual Operations, Daniel L. Hatcher Apr 2026

Child Support Factory: Racist History, Harm, And Unconstitutionality Of The Child Support System's Contractual Operations, Daniel L. Hatcher

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Within America’s justice institutions, the child support system has become a business. The intended mission of aid has been traded and abdicated through contractual deals to churn vulnerable families into factory-like revenue operations. Juvenile and family courts across the country have partnered through countless intertwined interagency contracts with human service agencies, prosecutors, attorneys general’s offices, probation departments, and policing offices—all aimed at generating revenue from impoverished children and parents rather than serving their best interests. The resulting child support factory is vast, harmful, unconstitutional, unethical, and grew from a racist history that devastated Black families, and still operates with starkly …

Federal Extreme Risk Protection Orders: A Potential Pathway To Preventing Mass Shootings, Lilly H. Donahue Apr 2026

Federal Extreme Risk Protection Orders: A Potential Pathway To Preventing Mass Shootings, Lilly H. Donahue

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Note examines how the creation and implementation of a federal extreme risk protection order (ERPO) statute would impact federal investigations, mass shooting prevention, and the reduction of firearm deaths at large. While ERPOs exist in several states, there is currently no federal statutory scheme to allow federal law enforcement agencies to pursue ERPOs against citizens at risk of harming themselves or others with firearms. By examining the current legal landscape of state-level ERPOs, federal agencies’ investigatory procedures and failures, constitutional and racial equity concerns, and industry best practices, this Note aims to explore what a federal ERPO statute could …

Arkansas Cotton Variety Tests 2025, F. Bourland, J. Gann, B. Lovelady, B. Guest Jr, J. Mcalee, L. Martin, Z. Treadway, C. Henderson

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

The primary goal of the Arkansas Cotton Variety Tests is to provide unbiased data regarding the agronomic performance of cotton varieties and advanced breeding lines in the major cotton-growing areas of Arkansas. This information helps seed companies establish marketing strategies and assists producers in choosing varieties to plant. These annual evaluations will then facilitate the inclusion of new, improved genetic material in Arkansas cotton production. Adaptation of varieties is determined by evaluating the lines at five University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture research sites (Manila, Keiser, Judd Hill, Marianna, and Rohwer). The tests at Rohwer were abandoned due to undefined …

A Model Intercomparison Study To Investigate Mixing Characteristics In Non-Precipitating Stratocumulus Clouds, Fan Yang, Kyoung Ock Choi, Kamal Kant Chandrakar, Fabian Hoffmann, Pei Hou, Steve Krueger, Chunsong Lu, Mikhail Ovchinnikov, Yangze Ren, Shin Ichiro Shima, Peng Wu, Chongzhi Yin, Zeen Zhu, Seong Soo Yum

Michigan Tech Publications

Recent aircraft observations of marine stratocumulus clouds consistently showed that cloud microphysical relationships vary with altitude, indicating inhomogeneous mixing characteristics near cloud top and homogeneous mixing characteristics in mid-levels of clouds. Here, we conduct model intercomparison of an idealized, non-precipitating stratocumulus cloud to evaluate model consistency and examine whether simulations can reproduce the observed mixing characteristics. The results show that eleven large-eddy simulations with various dynamics and microphysics schemes show good agreement on the thermodynamical, microphysical, and dynamical properties of the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer in a steady state. The inter-model spread in steady-state liquid water path is significantly reduced compared …
