Gamification And Serious Games In Undergraduate Nursing Education For Disaster Preparedness In The United States, Jacob Fast
Dissertations
Disaster preparedness is a critical component of undergraduate nursing education, yet traditional instructional approaches often inadequately prepare students for the complexity and uncertainty of real-world emergencies. Emerging literature suggests that gamification and serious games may enhance engagement and applied learning; however, limited research has examined their integration within nursing curricula from the perspective of faculty responsible for instructional design. This convergent mixed-methods study investigated the extent of integration, perceived effectiveness, and practical utility of gamification and serious games in undergraduate nursing education for disaster preparedness. Quantitative data were collected through a national survey of faculty teaching in CCNE- and ACEN-accredited …

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) leads to profound muscle atrophy and weakness that remain resistant to rehabilitation. Although early recovery typically involves a brief period of limb unloading, the degree to which disuse alone accounts for muscle pathology after ACLR remains unclear. Here, we leveraged publicly available RNA-seq datasets of muscle biopsies from vastus lateralis obtained 7 days after ACLR or 10 days after unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS), each with matched control limbs, to directly compare disuse-driven and ACLR-specific early transcriptional responses. Despite similar periods of reduced loading, substantial transcriptomic divergence was identified using both intersection and interaction bioinformatic …
Threads Of Protection: Intellectual Property Protections For Fashion Designs In The Age Of Generative Ai, Nayomi Mendez Andrade
Threads Of Protection: Intellectual Property Protections For Fashion Designs In The Age Of Generative Ai, Nayomi Mendez Andrade
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
This Article examines the limitations of intellectual property law in the United States for fashion designers and their creations. In doing so, it considers the impact generative artificial intelligence technologies have had on such protections. Despite fashion’s cultural and economic significance, U.S. law offers only fragmented protection through copyrights, trademarks, trade dress, and patents. Copyright law is significantly constrained by the useful article doctrine and the separability requirement articulated in Star Athletica v. Varsity Brands. Thus, copyrights only protect separable artistic elements rather than garments as a whole. Trademark and trade dress protections are typically only effective for well-established brands, …
Generated Wills And Responsible Ai Use In Estate Law, Collin Peters
Generated Wills And Responsible Ai Use In Estate Law, Collin Peters
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Generative AI tools have been increasingly used by corporations and individuals to create documents quickly and cheaply based on short human inputs. The coming of widely accessible and cheap-to-use generative AI tools introduces the possibility of firms or lay testators using AI to generate wills. However, the risks of using AI to generate wills are largely unexplored and have not received much regulatory attention nor discussion in the literature. As a result, the question of how to manage the risks of AI-generated wills in a way that ensures their safe, accessible, and productive use has largely gone unaddressed. This article …
From Software To Models: Rethinking Open Source In The Age Of Generative Ai, Dana Beldiman
From Software To Models: Rethinking Open Source In The Age Of Generative Ai, Dana Beldiman
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Open-source software (OSS), a form of distributed and collaborative software development rooted in the ethos of early computer science, has evolved into an essential component of modern digital infrastructure. This article asks whether open source will assume a similarly transformative role within the emerging technological paradigm of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
Generative AI differs fundamentally from software: its constituent artifacts, architectures, generative capacities, and deployment contexts are distinct and substantially more complex. Despite these differences, foundation models continue to be released under licenses originally designed for software, which may not constitute a valid transfer of rights in the generative AI …

Strategic Resource Management In Pandemics: Integrating Capacity Planning With Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions For Covid-19, Ozlem Cosgun, Eyyub Kibis, Ali Dag, Burak Cankaya
Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for integrated healthcare resource planning to manage patient surges and reduce mortality. This study presents a novel optimization-based framework that jointly considers healthcare capacity planning and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), including mask mandates, social distancing, and quarantining. The framework extends traditional compartmental models by distinguishing patient categories—such as hospitalized non-ventilator patients, ventilated patients, and ICU admissions—within a mixed-integer programming (MIP) structure that remains computationally tractable. Applied to the COVID-19 outbreak in New York City, the model optimizes the allocation of hospital beds and ventilators while minimizing deaths. Results show that combining high-effectiveness NPIs with …

Let's All Go To The Lobby: Examining The American Cold War Experience Through Film, Renaldo Gonzales Jr.
GLI MA in American History Student Works
The films of the American film industry produced and released during the Cold War are as varied as the complex events that occurred throughout the entirety of the conflict. These films can provide an understanding of how the feelings and attitudes of the American people shifted and evolved as the Cold War progressed. This work will examine a small sample of these films, focusing on one film from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. By providing critiques and reviews of the film from the time of its original release, information about the motives of the director of the films being …

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Working Papers
We examine the effect of participating in a survey of constituents on student attitudes toward research and civic engagement and student confidence in several “soft skills”. Each student was trained in human subjects research and survey procedures and spent between four and six hours conducting an in-person survey at a location appropriate for the survey's target. We explore the effects of student outcomes through analyzing qualitative post survey experience reflection papers in one class, and a comparison of pre and post poll responses to an assessment in another. The results suggest that participation in the activity was correlated with an …

Examining How Trauma-Informed Behavior Support Strategies Influence Teachers' Confidence And Instructional Decision-Making In Elementary Settings, Suzan L. Grover
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The purpose of this practitioner inquiry was to examine how trauma informed behavior support strategies influence teacher confidence and instructional decision making in an elementary school setting. This study was conducted in a low socioeconomic status K–4 school and included general education teachers, special education teachers, and interventionists. Data were collected using a mixed-methods approach, including a pre-survey, classroom observations, and teacher reflection journal entries. Survey data assessed teacher confidence and perceptions of trauma-informed practices, while observational and reflection data provided insight into classroom implementation and teacher mindset. Findings indicated that teachers value trauma-informed practices but demonstrate varying levels of …
Improving Student Behavior Through Physical Activity Breaks, Raymond Duve
Improving Student Behavior Through Physical Activity Breaks, Raymond Duve
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Students struggle to remain on-task throughout long periods of time in class. This results in off-task behaviors and a lack of focus. As a result, this keeps students from maximizing their achievement. Research has shown that classroom activity breaks can help reduce off-task behaviors and improve on-task behaviors for students. This inquiry-based research study aims to find out if classroom activity breaks can improve on-task behaviors, classroom enjoyment for the students, and student behavior. The study used a quantitative approach via a student survey, a tally chart, and behavior log. The findings showed that students had fewer off-task behaviors and …

This inquiry-based capstone project examined the impact of explicitly teaching behavioral expectations on student behavior and overall classroom functioning in an elementary classroom. The study was conducted in a third-grade classroom with 17 participating students over a six-week period. The identified problem was the loss of instructional time due to frequent minor disruptions, inconsistent transitions, and unclear behavioral expectations. The intervention focused on proactively teaching, modeling, practicing, and consistently reinforcing classroom expectations. Data was collected using quantitative behavior tracking logs, including the frequency of minor disruptions, major incidents, teacher redirections, and instructional time lost. Findings indicated a consistent decrease in …
Hypersonic Missiles: Evaluating Modern Warfare In The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Bill Christopher Arputharaj, Amit Mukherjee
Hypersonic Missiles: Evaluating Modern Warfare In The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Bill Christopher Arputharaj, Amit Mukherjee
Journal of Strategic Security
The Russia-Ukraine war represents the world’s first theatre where hypersonic missile systems have been employed in combat operations. However, there is insufficient literature on the comparative analysis of Russian hypersonic missiles launched during the conflict, namely the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, 3M22 Zircon, and Oreshnik intermediate-range missile systems. The article evaluates their technological complexity, survivability against multilayer air and missile defence networks, and their overall impact in this conflict. The research establishes a doctrinal framework for translating theoretical deterrence into applied battlefield outcomes for hypersonic weapon systems. The study uses a qualitative approach that draws inferences from defence reports and media coverage …
Asset And Deficit Thinking In English Instructors’ Mindsets And Feedback On Student Writing, Rebecca R. Simataa
Asset And Deficit Thinking In English Instructors’ Mindsets And Feedback On Student Writing, Rebecca R. Simataa
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Educators are trained to diagnose and fix gaps in students’ skills and knowledge. This pedagogy often leads to deficit thinking, where instructors blame students’ identities or backgrounds for challenges in school. With deficit thinking leading toward inequitable outcomes, recent research has responded with asset thinking to recognize students’ strengths, yet its intersection with instructors’ feedback remains largely unexplored. Drawing on deficit thinking scholarship (Davis & Museus, 2019; Valencia, 1997) and Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth model, this qualitative phenomenological study explored asset and deficit thinking in instructors’ mindsets and feedback practices. Participants consisted of five higher education English Language Arts …

Playing The Hermès Game: Quota Bags, Antitrust Law, And The Limits Of Consumer Protection In Luxury Markets, Madeleine Chou
William & Mary Business Law Review
Luxury fashion retail has become a behemoth of an industry. Through acquisitions and strong brand recognition, some brands have developed significant market power in the luxury retail space. Chief among these brands is Hermès, a luxury leather retail boutique known for its highly sought after quota bags, like the Birkin and the Kelly. Quota bags are handbags that can generally only be bought by customers who have developed a substantial purchase history and relationship with the brand. Through this sales model, Hermès has created what plaintiffs have alleged to be an antitrust tying scheme, in which the purchase of one …

Oncology Articles
AIMS: Prospectively confirm use of the integrated 31-gene expression profile test (i31-SLNB) in patients with cutaneous melanoma to predict sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) positivity and assess recurrence rates in those considered low risk by i31-SLNB who did not have an SLNB.
METHODS: Patients with T1-T4 tumors being considered for SLNB who received 31-gene expression profile (31-GEP) testing in the multi-center, prospective DECIDE study were included (n = 912). Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate recurrence-free survival (RFS).
RESULTS: Among 430 patients with T1-T4 tumors who had an SLNB, the positivity rate was 2.6% (3/114) in those with < 5% i31-SLNB-predicted risk versus 21.4% (28/131) in those with >10% predicted …
Women With Will: The Power Of The Women Of The Renaissance, Madeline E. Stewart
Women With Will: The Power Of The Women Of The Renaissance, Madeline E. Stewart
Tenor of Our Times
Women of Italy in the Renaissance period were not powerless. They may or may not have had articulate power, but in many cases, they wielded an inarticulate power or influence that is more complex and difficult to define by modern terms associated with feminism. Feminism is simply anachronistic for this time, and the people of this time cannot be expected to have upheld ideals that had not been developed yet. Claims that women had no power or development in this era are false. Some excellent examples of some of the most powerful people in Italy politically were women, and they …

A National Security Strategy For The Middle East, Vanessa Rice, Rudy Torres, Addy Horgan, Joy Omosa, Mark Westfall
School of Public Policy Capstones
This National Security Strategy addresses the persistent national security challenges the United States faces in the Middle East, a region vital for global energy supply, economic connectivity, and a source of anti-American extremism. Recognizing the failures of past "haphazard experimentation," the strategy proposes a thoughtful, pragmatic plan prioritizing five distinct and congruent interest areas: Maintaining Regional Access, Supporting Regional Stability, Ensuring Energy Security, Defending American Citizens and Personnel, and Preserving and Protecting Western Ideals. The strategy outlines actions such as: countering Chinese and Russian influence through intelligence sharing and defense incentives; containing Iran via a new, permanent nuclear deal and …
