Picturing Self‐Harm: Investigating Flash‐Forward Mental Imagery As A Proximal And Modifiable Driver Of Non‐Suicidal Self‐Injury, Julie L. Ji, Michael Kyron, Lisa Saulsman, Rodrigo Becerra, Ashleigh Lin, Penelope Hasking, Emily A. Holmes Aug 2024

Picturing Self‐Harm: Investigating Flash‐Forward Mental Imagery As A Proximal And Modifiable Driver Of Non‐Suicidal Self‐Injury, Julie L. Ji, Michael Kyron, Lisa Saulsman, Rodrigo Becerra, Ashleigh Lin, Penelope Hasking, Emily A. Holmes

School of Psychology

Objectives: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is theorized to be reinforced by its emotional consequences. Mental images of NSSI are commonly reported as occurring prior to NSSI. Based on the known functional properties of anticipatory mental imagery as an emotional and motivational amplifier, this study investigated whether NSSI mental imagery constitutes a proximal and dynamic mechanism underpinning NSSI risk. Method: An intensive ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study was conducted to track the occurrence and characteristics of NSSI mental imagery alongside NSSI urge and behavior in naturalistic settings. A sample of N = 43 individuals aged 17 to 24 with a history of …

Evaluating Coll2-1no2 Level In Pre- And Post-Menopausal Iraqi Women With Osteoarthritis, Noor Basil Ghanim, Bushra Faris Hasan Aug 2024

Evaluating Coll2-1no2 Level In Pre- And Post-Menopausal Iraqi Women With Osteoarthritis, Noor Basil Ghanim, Bushra Faris Hasan

Baghdad Science Journal

Osteoarthritis (OA) is not an autoimmune but a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the joints of humans due to mechanical stress mostly in the knees and the hip. In OA a modification of the cartilage is encountered causing a pain in the joints upon movement. Coll2-1NO2 is a specific sequence of amino acids produced from the degradation of type II collagen, which is abundantly found in the cartilage, followed by a nitration in the tyrosine residue as a consequence of stress-inflammatory events. In this study, Coll2-1NO2 is used as a biomarker of OA to predict the inflammatory stress condition as well …

Baghdad Science Journal

Galangin (Gal) is a natural flavonoid sourced from the roots of the plant Albina Kalanga. It possesses a variety of pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory. The current study aims to enhance the efficacy of galangin through the use of gold nanoparticles as a drug delivery system against CCl4-induced toxicity in the testicular tissue of male albino mice. Forty-two albino mice were divided into seven groups (6 mice/group), treatment with carbon tetrachloride solution for two weeks by intraperitoneal injection, (1 ml/kg) once a week for all groups except the control group, after which a group was injected with …

Rural Oral Health Access Disparities In New York State, Renae Williams Atkinson Dmd, Ms, Stacy Mcilduff Cfre, Hayward Derek Horton Phd

The New York State Dental Journal

Disparities in access to dental care for those whose primary/only dental insurance is Medicaid is a known issue. The infamous case of 12-year-old Deamonte Driver from Maryland brought this great need for access to private dental care through Medicaid to the fore. Yet, to this date, there has been no resource to address this great need.

Dentists accepting Medicaid fall into two categories: those who practice in federally qualified health centers (FQHC), and those who practice privately. FQHCs are known anecdotally to have long waitlists, delaying access to needed care (as in the case of Driver). This is compounded by …

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

It is known that small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are released from cancer cells and contribute to cancer progression via crosstalk with recipient cells. We have previously reported that sEVs expressing the αVβ3 integrin, a protein upregulated in aggressive neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPrCa), contribute to neuroendocrine differentiation (NED) in recipient cells. Here, we examine the impact of αVβ3 expression on sEV protein content, density and function. sEVs used in this study were isolated by iodixanol density gradients and characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis, immunoblotting and single vesicle analysis. Our proteomic profile of sEVs containing αVβ3 shows downregulation of typical effectors involved …

The Twitter Blackout: Do Congressional Rules Influence The Cyberworld?, Carlos Gutierrez-Mannix, Thomas R. Gray Aug 2024

The Twitter Blackout: Do Congressional Rules Influence The Cyberworld?, Carlos Gutierrez-Mannix, Thomas R. Gray

Political Science Faculty Publications

Intro

Communication is understood to be a pillar of democracy. Therefore, governments around the world enact laws which make it easier for politicians to communicate with their constituents. However, some governments also restrict this ability during campaign seasons as a way of unclogging the media. In the United States, congressional election blackout dates are periods in which politicians are not allowed to engage in mass unsolicited mailing of political advertising. Because the prohibition only applies to unsolicited media, we theorize that we should see the transition from one type of communication to another.

Methods

To test this effect, we created …

Success Of Implants In Patients With Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Osman Khan, Kathryn Gauch, Alison Newgard Dds, Ezzard Rolle Dds

The New York State Dental Journal

With the development of effective antiviral medication, patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are living longer, with fewer comorbidities. Because HIV is a chronic disease, patients are looking for long-term solutions to dental care. As dental providers, it is important that we treat patients to the standard of care. Currently, implants are the standard of care for treating edentulous areas. Dental providers may be hesitant to recommend implants in patients with complex medical conditions like HIV. However, research has shown that if a patient with HIV is well-controlled, dental implant success is the same as with a healthy non-HIV infected …
