Book Banning: The Post-Pico Epidemic Upon Nationwide Academic Curricula, Brian Gomberg Jan 2025

Book Banning: The Post-Pico Epidemic Upon Nationwide Academic Curricula, Brian Gomberg

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This Note explores the growing wave of book bans across the United States, highlighting the increasing role of state legislators in advancing policies that restrict access to literature in public schools. While historically driven by private individuals or local challenges, contemporary bans are now often state-sanctioned, with states like Texas, Florida, Missouri, Utah, and South Carolina leading the movement. These actions not only suppress specific titles but also target entire genres, disproportionately affecting books dealing with race, gender, and LGBTQ+ identities. Drawing on sources such as the PEN America Index of School Book Bans, the Note analyzes the historical context …

Impacts Of Trout Stocking And Non-Native Trout Populations On Wild Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis In West Virginia Streams, Xander A. Lamping

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Understanding the extent that anglers targeting stocked trout end up harvesting wild Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis addition to studying how non-native trout species affect native Brook Trout populations is important for effective management and conservation in the central Appalachian Mountains. This thesis addresses these concerns in two parts. The first chapter used a combination of creel surveys and non-lethal morphometric methods to estimate wild Brook Trout harvest rates on four stocked streams during the West Virginia spring stocking season. A generalized linear model was developed to determine the origin (wild vs. hatchery) of Brook Trout harvested by anglers. This differentiation …

If You Build It: Using Ground Squirrel Risk Perception To Test Wildlife Crossing Structure Success, Sarah Sanz Jan 2025

If You Build It: Using Ground Squirrel Risk Perception To Test Wildlife Crossing Structure Success, Sarah Sanz

All Master's Theses

Roads and traffic present many risks for wildlife, and animals must be able to accurately assess risks in their environment. Animals can often perceive the level of risk they face, and their behavioral responses can alter their fitness and potentially even whole-population dynamics. However, animals may be unable to properly measure the levels of risk near roadways because roads present novel environmental conditions and alter predators’ behavior. To mitigate some of the ecological problems created by roadways, wildlife crossing structures (WCSs) are being incorporated into transportation projects. To understand whether WCSs provide quality habitat for wildlife, we compared the levels …

Esg Federalism: How State Regulations Shape Esg Performance, Kameron Eck Jan 2025

Esg Federalism: How State Regulations Shape Esg Performance, Kameron Eck

Molecular Dynamics-Based Two-Dimensional Simulation Of Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing Process For Unimodal And Bimodal Systems, Yeasir Mohammad Akib, Ehsan Marzbanrad, Farid Ahmed

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

The trend of adapting powder bed fusion (PBF) for product manufacturing continues to grow as this process is highly capable of producing functional 3D components with micro-scale precision. The powder bed’s properties (e.g., powder packing, material properties, flowability, etc.) and thermal energy deposition heavily influence the build quality in the PBF process. The packing density in the powder bed dictates the bulk powder behavior and in-process performance and, therefore, significantly impacts the mechanical and physical properties of the printed components. Numerical modeling of the powder bed process helps to understand the powder spreading process and predict experimental outcomes. A two-dimensional …

Novel Insights Into The Palaeomagnetism Of Serpentinized Peridotites From The Troodos And Oman Ophiolites, James Hepworth Jan 2025

Novel Insights Into The Palaeomagnetism Of Serpentinized Peridotites From The Troodos And Oman Ophiolites, James Hepworth

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Large volumes of mantle peridotite are exposed at the Earth’s surface in ophiolites, becoming vulnerable to the concurrent chemical alteration processes of serpentinization and carbonation. Serpentinization frequently results in the production of secondary magnetite that can record the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field at the time of its formation, allowing palaeomagnetism to be used as a tool to investigate this process. Many ophiolites also experienced large-scale tectonic rotations during their evolution. In some cases, the timing of these rotations is well-documented palaeomagnetically, potentially allowing the timing of different phases of serpentinization to be constrained if the magnetization directions of …

A Reflection-Spectroscopy Measured Skin Carotenoid Score Strongly Correlates With Plasma Concentrations Of All Major Dietary Carotenoid Species Except For Lycopene, Qiang Wu, Cheryl Webb Cherry, Stephanie Jilcott Pitts, Melissa N Laska, Neal Craft, Nancy E Moran

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Skin carotenoids can be measured non-invasively using spectroscopy methods to provide a biomarker of total dietary carotenoid and carotenoid-rich fruit and vegetable intake. However, the degree to which skin carotenoid biomarkers reflect intakes of specific carotenoids must be determined for specific devices. Previously, findings were mixed regarding the correlation between reflection spectroscopy (RS)-assessed skin carotenoids and individual plasma carotenoid concentrations. The current study expands on prior analyses to examine the cross-sectional associations between adult RS-assessed skin carotenoids and individual carotenoid species intakes and plasma concentrations, controlling for potential covariates. We hypothesized that RS-assessed skin carotenoid scores would strongly correlate with …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Tryptophan (Trp)-based radiotracers have excellent potential for imaging many different types of brain pathology because of their involvement with both the serotonergic and kynurenine (KYN) pathways. However, radiotracers specific to the kynurenine metabolism pathway are limited. In addition, historically Trp-based radiopharmaceuticals were synthesized with the short-lived isotope carbon-11. A newer generation of Trp-based imaging agents using the longer half-lived and commercially available isotopes, such as fluorine-18 and iodine-124, are being developed. The newly developed amino acid-based tracers have been demonstrated to have favorable radiochemical and imaging characteristics in pre-clinical studies. However, many barriers still exist in the clinical translation of …
