Applying The Sir Model: Can Students Advise The Mayor Of A Small Community?, Carrin Goosen, Mark I. Nelson, Mahime Watanabe
CODEE Journal
This is an account of a modelling scenario that uses the sir epidemic model. It was used in a third year applied mathematics subject. All students were enrolled in a mathematics degree of some type. Students are presented with the results of a test carried out on 100 individuals in a community containing 3000 people. From this they determined the number of infectious and recovered individuals in the population. Given the per capita recovery rate and making a suitable assumption about the number of infectious individuals at the start of the epidemic, they then estimate the infectious contact rate and …

The healthcare industry has transitioned from traditional healthcare 1.0 to AI-powered healthcare 4.0. However, overall cost for patient treatment remains high and challenging to manage due to the absence of a centralized cost evaluation mechanism before hospital visits. Therefore, in this paper, we devise a cloud-based mechanism to calculate hospitals' star rating based on questionnaire with the application of Z-score and K∗clustering algorithm. To evaluate disease severity at cloud, splitfed technique is utilized in coordination with Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN). Finally, the cloud calculates provisional treatment costs and finds a preferable hospital with a low payable treatment cost and …

The forces of evolution-mutation, selection, migration, and genetic drift-shape the genetic architecture of human traits, including the genetic architecture of complex neuropsychiatric illnesses. Studying these illnesses in populations that are diverse in genetic ancestry, historical demography, and cultural history can reveal how evolutionary forces have guided adaptation over time and place. A fundamental truth of shared human biology is that an allele responsible for a disease in anyone, anywhere, reveals a gene critical to the normal biology underlying that condition in everyone, everywhere. Understanding the genetic causes of neuropsychiatric disease in the widest possible range of human populations thus yields …

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease that can cause hydrocele and its associated stigma, loss of economic productivity, and depression. Hydrocele surgery is an essential part of LF morbidity management but can be difficult for national programs to implement. To improve access to hydrocele surgeries in Côte d'Ivoire, we provided a WHO-certified surgical training for six surgical teams from five health districts in Côte d'Ivoire. We then evaluated the surgical outcomes and assessed the impact of hydrocele surgery on quality of life of hydrocelectomy patients. Preoperative and operative records were reviewed to describe baseline hydrocele characteristics and operative …

A key component to achieving the global goal of elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is the availability of appropriate tools for disease mapping, monitoring, and surveillance. However, the development of these tools for a neglected disease such as LF can be a challenge. The lack of a commercial market and low familiarity with these diseases leave little incentive for diagnostic manufacturers to invest in this space. The Filarial Test Strip (FTS) development story provides a case study on how a multi-stakeholder, public-private partnership model facilitated the development, evaluation, and introduction of a new monitoring and surveillance tool for LF. This …

Offline Handwritten Signature Identification Based On Hybrid Features And Proposed Deep Model, Zainab Hashim, Hanaa Mohsin, Ahmed Alkhayyat
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
Handwritten signature identification is the process of determining an individual’strue identity by analyzing their signature. This is an important task in various applications such as financial transactions, legal documentverification, and biometric systems. However, verifying handwritten signatures is challenging even in the age of digital transactions and remote document authentication. The inherent variety in people’s signatures, which may occurdue to factors such as mood, exhaustion, or even the writing tool used, contributes to the problem. Furthermore, the proliferation of sophisticated forgery methods, such as freehand mimicking and sophisticated picture manipulation, necessitates the development of reliable and precise tools for identifying authentic …

Time Scale Theory On Stability Of Explicit And Implicit Discrete Epidemic Models: Applications To Swine Flu Outbreak, Gülşah Yeni, Elvan Akın, Naveen K. Vaidya
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Time scales theory has been in use since the 1980s with many applications. Only very recently, it has been used to describe within-host and between-hosts dynamics of infectious diseases. In this study, we present explicit and implicit discrete epidemic models motivated by the time scales modeling approach. We use these models to formulate the basic reproduction number, which determines whether an outbreak occurs, or the disease dies out. We discuss the stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points using the linearization method and Lyapunov function. Furthermore, we apply our models to swine flu outbreak data to demonstrate that the …

The American workplace is a fractured sphere of public life, in which white men often wield power at the expense of women and people of color. However, that power imbalance is no longer fully imbued with the active animus that characterized the first few centuries of American life; now, much of the damage done by discrimination is done structurally and implicitly. Consequently, the operation of bias and disadvantage is often invisible to employers and employees alike. The problem of discrimination in American life is thus larger and deeper than a few bad actors, and it will be impossible to solve …

Spine infections fall under one of two major categories, primary spinal infections as well as postoperative spine infections. Both of these events are rare but associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and the diagnosis as well as optimal intervention strategy utilized for management is not always clear. In particular, postoperative surgical site infection (SSI) is a rare but potentially devastating complication. Previous studies have assessed risk factors for postoperative spine SSI and one aimed to develop risk stratification tool to assess management options, but this tool has not been externally validated or regularly used. The current thesis had two primary aims: …
