Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are common viruses that are present in the general population. However, it is uncommon for both viruses to coincide at the same time and location. These viruses infect the nervous system to establish latency and have been associated with neurological disorders. We discuss a case of co-occurring VZV reactivation and recurrent HSV infection with subsequent VZV encephalitis following an insult to the neurologic system.

Bats harbor viruses that can cause severe disease and death in humans including filoviruses (e.g., Ebola virus), henipaviruses (e.g., Hendra virus), and coronaviruses (e.g., SARS-CoV). Bats often tolerate these viruses without noticeable adverse immunological effects or succumbing to disease. Previous studies have largely focused on the role of the bat’s innate immune response to control viral pathogenesis, but little is known about bat adaptive immunity. A key component of adaptive immunity is the humoral response, comprised of antibodies that can specifically recognize viral antigens with high affinity. The antibody genes within the 1,400 known bat species are highly diverse, and …

BACKGROUND: Better understanding differences associated with antibiotic prescribing for acute sinusitis can help inform antibiotic stewardship strategies. We characterized antibiotic prescribing patterns for acute sinusitis among commercially insured adults and explored differences by patient- and prescriber-level factors.
METHODS: Outpatient encounters among adults aged 18 to 64 years diagnosed with sinusitis between 2016 and 2020 were identified by national administrative claims data. We classified antibiotic agents-first-line (amoxicillin-clavulanate or amoxicillin) and second-line (doxycycline, levofloxacin, or moxifloxacin)-and ≤7-day durations as guideline concordant based on clinical practice guidelines. Modified Poisson regression was used to examine the association between patient- and prescriber-level factors and guideline-concordant …

Overview On The Most Common Microbial Causative Agents Of Diarrhea, Wafaa Ayad Al-Nuaimy, Dhay A. Azeez
Muthanna Medical Journal
In all parts of the world and among all age groups, diarrhea is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. However, compared to high-income countries, low-income countries have fewer resources and a less resilient infrastructure, which makes them more susceptible to an unfair share of diarrheal morbidity and mortality. The word "diarrhea" originates from the Greek word "dia rEo," referring to "flow through." When the volume of colonic fluid crosses this segment's absorptive capacity due to decreased absorption and/or increased secretion, diarrhea achievements. In infectious diarrheas, the abnormal function is brought about by microorganisms that colonize the intestinal mucosa and …

Exploring The Dark And Gothic: An Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe And Nathaniel Hawthorne’S Gothic Elements In American Literature, Alejandra Serna
Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the significant contributions of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne to the development of American Gothic literature. Poe’s stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” are renowned for their psychological elements and exploration of the human psyche, while Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark” questions the nature of evil as a universal human experience. By examining the ways in which these authors engage with themes of mental disorders, symbolism, and science versus nature, this thesis explores how such work by Poe and Hawthorne play in shaping the readers' understanding of the darker elements of American Gothic literature and its …

Antifungal echinocandins inhibit the biosynthesis of β−1,3-glucan, a major and essential polysaccharide component of the fungal cell wall. However, the efficacy of echinocandins against the pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus is limited. Here, we use solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) and other techniques to show that echinocandins induce dynamic changes in the assembly of mobile and rigid polymers within the A. fumigatus cell wall. The reduction of β−1,3-glucan induced by echinocandins is accompanied by a concurrent increase in levels of chitin, chitosan, and highly polymorphic α−1,3-glucans, whose physical association with chitin maintains cell wall integrity and modulates water permeability. The rearrangement of …

Prion diseases result from the misfolding of the physiological prion protein (PrPC) to a pathogenic conformation (PrPSc). Compelling evidence indicates that prevention and/or reduction of PrPSc replication are promising therapeutic strategies against prion diseases. However, the existence of different PrPSc conformations (or strains) associated with disease represents a major problem when identifying anti-prion compounds. Efforts to identify strain-specific anti-prion molecules are limited by the lack of biologically relevant high-throughput screening platforms to interrogate compound libraries. Here, we describe adaptations to the protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) technology (able to faithfully replicate PrPSc strains) that increase its throughput to facilitate the …

Studies show that individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity also experience trauma and mental illnesses. Despite this evidence, many resources provided through state welfare services seldom allocate sufficient funds and personnel to help address mental health. This study investigates the relationship between housing insecurity and trauma for adult women who have tried to access assistance throughout Southern California. To do this, I conducted in-depth interviews and DSM-5 questionnaires with twenty-six women during the summer of 2023 and 2024 via Zoom. My findings show that adult women who have experienced homelessness and housing insecurity in Southern California were more susceptible to …

Adaptive Immune Profiling Of Sin Nombre Hantavirus And Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection, Tonilynn M. Baranowski
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Hantaviruses are causative agents of potentially fatal respiratory illness and/or organ failure in humans worldwide. In the United States, the predominant hantavirus species, Sin Nombre hantavirus (SNV), causes a severe disease pathology, called hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). Infection with SNV and subsequent clinical manifestations of HCPS lends itself to case fatality rates approaching 40%, even under supportive care. This is partially due to the lack of FDA-approved vaccines and antivirals, in addition to a deficit in our knowledge regarding the human immune response to SNV. Further investigation of the adaptive immune response may reveal key targets to mediate disease outcome. …

Abstract
Problem: Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (nv-HAP) is increasingly becoming a significant concern in healthcare settings. Studies have indicated that nv-HAP accounts for a substantial portion of hospital-acquired pneumonia cases, with a high associated mortality rate. The prevalence of nv-HAP underscores the importance of implementing robust HAP prevention bundles. Prevention, early recognition, and appropriate management of nv-HAP are essential to improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on healthcare facilities.
Context: A 28-bed capacity Stroke Telemetry Unit incurred six nv-HAP incidents in 2023. Patients needed to be more compliant with the nv-HAP prevention bundles. Patient care technicians (PCTs) are instrumental nurses’ …

Pins aims to portray the societal landscape observed and experienced by me as an international student, highlighting sociological concerns like hatred and hate crimes instead of focusing on surface-level metrics such as the risk and fatality rates of COVID-19. Through this work, I want to remind the audience of the multifaceted nature of society and the emotions evoked by COVID-19, prompting reflection on the role of art during times of crisis. While transforming my original medium of metal objects into an installation art format, I explored concepts such as spacing, installation, cognition, narrative, and multiple senses. UNLABELLED: Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Nepal, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) accounts for ~5-20% of AES cases, but ~75% of AES cases are of unknown etiology. We identified a gemykibivirus in CSF collected in 2020 from an 8-year-old male patient with AES using metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Gemykibiviruses are single stranded, circular DNA viruses in the family
IMPORTANCE: Viral encephalitis is a devastating disease, but unfortunately, worldwide, the causative virus in many cases is unknown. Therefore, it is important to identify viruses that could be responsible for cases of human encephalitis. Here, using metagenomic sequencing …
