The Effects Of Immune Regulation And Dysregulation: Helper T Cell Receptor Affinity, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus And Cancer Risk, And Vaccine Hesitancy, Deborah K. Johnson Jun 2020

The Effects Of Immune Regulation And Dysregulation: Helper T Cell Receptor Affinity, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus And Cancer Risk, And Vaccine Hesitancy, Deborah K. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Helper T cells direct the immunological response to foreign pathogens and cancer. To become activated, helper T cells must recognize unique peptides presented on major histocompatibility complex II (pMHCII) by antigen presenting cells (APCs) with their T cell receptor (TCR). While much is known about helper T cell activation signaling cascades and the subsequent roles of helper T cell subsets, the initiation of helper T cell activation by the TCR and other co-receptors is less well understood. Specifically, the affinity of the TCR for its pMHCII can change helper T cell subset fate, proliferation, and alter the risk for activation …

Safe And Effective Disinfection Of Show Cave Infrastructure In A Time Of Covid-19, Hazel A. Barton Jun 2020

Safe And Effective Disinfection Of Show Cave Infrastructure In A Time Of Covid-19, Hazel A. Barton

International Journal of Speleology

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has been responsible for over 650,000 deaths worldwide. Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs primarily through airborne transmission or direct human contact, demonstrating the importance of social distancing measures and the use of face masks to prevent infection. Nonetheless, the persistence of coronavirus on surfaces means that disinfection is important to limit the possibility of contact transmission. In this paper, the potential for various surfaces in show caves to serve as sources for SARS-CoV-2 infection is examined. Given the isoelectric potential (pI) of SARS and SARS-like coronaviruses, it is likely that they are …

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

The novelty and uncertainty associated with COVID-19 has created challenges for politicians, citizens, and healthcare providers, leaving no one unaffected. As members of the front line of defense, providers in Emergency Departments (EDs) face the momentous challenge of effectively identifying and treating patients with COVID-19, working with experts in Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Public Health, and other disciplines. We must coordinate these efforts while also protecting staff, implementing strategies to reduce transmission, and managing ED patients with conditions unrelated to COVID-19. Striving to maintain a grasp of the rapidly accumulating publications in medical journals and the media, we …

Simulation Analysis Of Beijing H1n1 Influenza Based On Spatial Clustering, Yitong Zhao, Mei Shan, Ma Liang, Zhang Wei

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Spatial cluster detection is widely used for disease surveillance, prevention and containment. In the early stages of illness, epidemics have similar symptoms to common diseases, making infectious disease data processing and analysis difficult. The Agent based modeling and simulation was used to generate H1N1 influenza data in Beijing. By designing a set of experiments, the epidemic monitoring results of two spatial clustering algorithms were analyzed. The results show that, using spatial clustering algorithms to analyze the simulation data of the epidemics can help to reveal the spread of the epidemic and play a positive role in the …

From Theory To Practice: Interdisciplinary Science In Undergraduate Education, Brie Tripp Jun 2020

From Theory To Practice: Interdisciplinary Science In Undergraduate Education, Brie Tripp

Dissertations and Theses

Science has undergone a major transformation in the 20th and 21st centuries with new fields emerging at the intersection of disciplines, such as bioethics, bioinformatics, and chemical ecology. Yet, opportunities to engage with interdisciplinary science, and the skills needed to work in these fields, are largely absent from undergraduate biology classrooms. As a consequence, students are potentially deprived of opportunities to think interdisciplinarily and engage with real-world issues that often necessitate interdisciplinary efforts. To be informed citizens in society and forward-thinking scientists in the workforce, undergraduate students will undoubtedly benefit from exposure to these interdisciplinary science experiences.

Given these considerations, …

3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetate 2,3-Dioxygenase Modulates The Ability Of Enterobacter Hormaechei To Induce Cryptococcus Neoformans Melanization, Amy Nelson

Honors Scholar Theses

In this study, we performed transposon mutagenesis to create a library of Enterobacter hormaechei mutants and developed a melanization assay to identify mutants that could not induce the typical melanization phenotype in Cryptococcus neoformans. Relevant phenotype labels included: “hypomelanizer”, a total lack of melanization; “hypermelanizer”, an increased melanization; or “abnormal”, an increased melanization with complete color change of the assay plate to a reddish-brown. Genomic sequencing of 47 mutants and bioinformatic analysis allowed us to pinpoint the transposon insertion site in each E. hormaechei mutant to identify the genes that were affected. A single mutant that induced the abnormal …

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Poor treatment outcomes due to nonadherence and consequent high levels of drug resistance continue to challenge efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB) in India. Mobile health‐ or mHealth‐based reminder cues have been considered in multiple health behavior modification interventions, including TB treatment nonadherence. We conducted a quasi‐experimental study in Ahmedabad, India, to examine the effectiveness of mHealth‐based reminder cues customized to meet diverse patient needs. Results from this experiment indicate that the potential of customized mHealth reminder cues may remain unrealized unless addressed in conjunction with the multifaceted drivers of TB treatment nonadherence. The perspective we present here has broad relevance …

Energy Efficiency Evaluation Of Discrete Manufacturing System Based On Improved Entropy Method, Zhuqing Peng, Wang Yan, Zhicheng Ji

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: For the characteristic of dynamic change randomness, variety, complexity and diversity in discrete manufacturing system, nine evaluation indexes were concluded from four aspects including product, equipment, economy and task flow, and energy efficiency evaluation index construction of discrete manufacturing system was structured. An improved entropy method was proposed. As the discrete degree of an index was too large when the entropy method was used to assign weight, the weight of the index would be very large. The idea of Analytic Hierarchy Model was used to improve the entropy method. So the improved entropy method could evaluate the discrete manufacturing …

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

In light of the growing realism of 3D bioprinted organs, legal issues arising from these concerns can easily bleed into our society. This bleeding demands exploration. Should 3D bioprinted organs be regulated as natural organs or as medical devices? Are 3D bioprinted organs patentable? What happens if a 3D bioprinted organ is subject to a successful patent infringement suit? Does the recipient face a Repo Men fate?

The beginning of this note dissects the scientific underpinnings of 3D bioprinted organs. Part II explores statutory authority and controlling, or otherwise persuasive, case law that pertains to subject-matter patentability. Current rights associated …

Leishmania major is the causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). No human vaccine is available for CL, and current drug regimens present several drawbacks, such as emerging resistance, severe toxicity, medium effectiveness, and/or high cost. Thus, the need for better treatment options against CL is a priority. In the present study, we validate the enzyme methionine aminopeptidase 1 of L. major (MetAP1Lm), a metalloprotease that catalyzes the removal of N-terminal methionine from peptides and proteins, as a chemotherapeutic target against CL infection. The in vitro antileishmanial activities of eight novel MetAP1 inhibitors (OJT001 to OJT008) were investigated. Three compounds, OJT006, …

Preventing The Corruption Of Healthcare Algorithms, Philip M. Nichols

Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies

The intersection of technology and healthcare will radically change the provision of healthcare services. The full extent of the changes cannot be known now, but the direction is clear: collection of voluminous data and tools powerful enough to analyze that data will facilitate the design of algorithms that will enable machines to make important decisions regarding diagnoses and treatments. In addition to the possible benefits, policymakers and scholars have focused on issues of privacy and potential bias. The potential for corruption of the design of healthcare algorithms has been ignored, but the potential for corruption is real and dangerous. This …

Multiscale Model For Hurricane Evacuation And Fuel Shortage, Sirish Namilae, Dahai Liu, Scott Parr Jun 2020

Multiscale Model For Hurricane Evacuation And Fuel Shortage, Sirish Namilae, Dahai Liu, Scott Parr

Center for Advanced Transportation Mobility

Hurricanes are powerful agents of destruction with significant socioeconomic impacts. High-volume mass evacuations, disruptions to the supply chain, and fuel hoarding from non-evacuees have led to localized fuel shortages lasting several days during recent hurricanes. Hurricane Irma in 2017, resulted in the largest evacuation in the nation affecting nearly 6.5 million people and saw widespread fuel shortages throughout the state of Florida. While news reports mention fuel shortages in several past hurricanes, the crowd source platform Gasbuddy has quantified the fuel shortages in the recent hurricanes. The analysis of this fuel shortage data suggested fuel shortages exhibited characteristics of an …
