Assessment Of Healthcare Waste Management In Hospitals Of South Lebanon, Mona Tfaily, Salim Moussa
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Healthcare wastes (HCW) are produced in any healthcare setting during diagnosis, medical care, operation or injection process or during research studies. The management of such wastes is becoming a great issue since they pose many health risks and environmental damage. Hence, this study was carried out to assess the level of healthcare waste management in hospitals of South Lebanon. A cross sectional study was conducted in five hospitals located in South Lebanon (A, B, C, D and E). The Individualized Rapid Assessment Tool (I-RAT) developed in 2009 as part of the UNDP GEF Global Project on Healthcare Waste, was the …

Hospital-Acquired Infection Role In Unplanned Extubation Of Endotracheal Tubes In Critical Care Units In Lebanon, Ahmad El Tassi
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Controlling Hospital-acquired Infections remains the cornerstone for improving patient safety during hospitalization. It continues one of the most common and costly problems facing critically ill patients in intensive care units. Disrupting mechanical ventilation, commonly performed in the intensive care unit, via unplanned extubation, whether deliberate or accidental, is a nightmare to any critical care practitioner. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the role of Hospital-acquired Infections on unplanned extubation in adult critical care units at a Lebanese university hospital. A Case-control design was implemented. All medical records of patients admitted to critical care units over the last …

Effectiveness Of A Health Education Intervention About Influenza And Vaccine In Secondary Schools In South Lebanon, Israa Assaf, Salim Moussa
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Seasonal influenza is an intense respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that circulate all around the world. In Lebanon, there is a lack of national flu awareness campaigns. Schools’ students are truly outstanding and viable sources to spread the awareness and strive for the conduct change in the general population. Hence, this study was carried out to test the effectiveness of a health education intervention in improving the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward influenza and its vaccine among secondary schools’ students in South Lebanon. This is a Pre/Post research study conducted in four schools located in South Lebanon. A …

Inclusivity Of Minorities In The U.S. Healthcare System, Sophia N. Trujillo
2020 Symposium Posters
Throughout the evolution of U.S. healthcare, the inclusivity of minorities has been a discussion amongst many communities. With healthcare being unaffordable and inaccessible to many, including minorities, it can influence their responses towards it. From research and in-depth observations, it has been revealed that certain ethnicities carry a trend of disabling illnesses and infectious diseases. This paper intends to identify the patterns that occur amongst ethnic communities that increase the risk of obtaining these conditions. Social determinants govern the health and lifestyle that have led to life-threatening illnesses. It has been found that factors such as eating habits, social environments, …

The human circulation contains cell-free DNA and non-coding microRNA (miRNA). Less is known about the presence of messenger RNA (mRNA). This report profiles the human circulating mRNA transcriptome in people with liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to determine whether mRNA analytes can be used as biomarkers of liver disease. Using RNAseq and RT-qPCR, we investigate circulating mRNA in plasma from HCC and LC patients and demonstrate detection of transcripts representing more than 19,000 different protein coding genes. Remarkably, the circulating mRNA expression levels were similar from person to person over the 21 individuals whose samples were analyzed by …

COVID-19, a novel infectious disease, was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Unlike the world’s persistent, high-burden infectious diseases—such as tuberculosis and malaria—that are more prevalent among the most vulnerable in low and middle-income countries, COVID-19 is unique because of (1) its wide geographic spread across a range of populations, (2) its partially asymptomatic transmission, (3) a disproportionate effect on older people and those with underlying morbidities, and (4) potentially, the level of intensive care required when geographic areas experience a large number of severe cases. Many countries and states have chosen to place entire …

Aerococcus urinae is increasingly recognized as a potentially significant urinary tract bacterium. A. urinae has been isolated from urine collected from both males and females with a wide range of clinical conditions, including urinary tract infection (UTI), urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), and overactive bladder (OAB). A. urinae is of particular clinical concern because it is highly resistant to many antibiotics and, when undiagnosed, can cause invasive and life-threatening bacteremia, sepsis, or soft tissue infections. Previous genomic characterization studies have examined A. urinae strains isolated from patients experiencing UTI episodes. Here, we analyzed the genomes of A. urinae strains isolated as …

Breastfeeding Classes: A Quality Improvement Project To Increase Intent To Breastfeed, Latonya Thomas
DNP and Student Works
Breastfeeding education has been shown to improve a mother's intent to breastfeed and self-efficacy rates. The PICOT question developed was as follows: "In prenatal and perinatal women, how will the participation in a community-based breastfeeding program compared to no program improve the intent to breastfeed and self-efficacy rates in 12 weeks?" The gap in practice was a lack of community resources and educational classes to support the longevity of breastfeeding. A quality improvement design with Bandura's social learning theory was utilized.

The Kinetic Signatures Of Antibody Binding To M. Genitalium Adhesin Protein Fragments, Margaret C. Lunn
The Kinetic Signatures Of Antibody Binding To M. Genitalium Adhesin Protein Fragments, Margaret C. Lunn
Honors Projects
Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually-transmitted bacterial pathogen that persists in patients by adherence to cells through matrix glycoproteins and evasion of host antibodies. The MgpB and MgpC adherence proteins consist of variable and conserved regions. Variable regions undergo antigenic variation to avoid specific antibodies. However, the C-terminus (MgpB-4a) does not vary, is highly immunogenic, and antibodies to this region inhibit attachment and promote bacterial killing in vitro. To better understand how M. genitalium avoids clearance by antibodies to MgpB-4a in vivo we used surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to measure kinetic values of binding events. Binding of polyclonal rabbit antibodies (3935 …

Patients with COVID-19 may have co-infections with other microorganisms. Here we report a case of a patient with an Escheria coli bacteremia secondary to a urinary tract infection, who experienced fevers while on active antimicrobial therapy. The patient was eventually tested for COVID-19 and found to be positive. This case emphasizes the need to suspect COVID-19 even in patients with documented bacterial infection.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an endocrine disorder that affects the metabolism of glucose, for which there were an estimated 415 million cases world-wide. There are two common types of DM, Type 1 and Type 2. A significant difference between the two types of DM is the underlying cause of the disease but the two disease processes have similar characteristics. Both Type 1 and Type 2 DM can be associated with severe complications. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) are two of the most common medical emergencies. DKA is commonly found in those with Type 1 DM and can …

Isothermal Inactivation Of Salmonella, Listeria Monocytogenes, And Enterococcus Faecium Nrrl-B 2354 In Peanut Butter, Powder Infant Formula, And Wheat Flour, Adam Robert Quinn
Theses and Dissertations
Pathogens in low-moisture foods are an emerging food safety concern due to increased survival and thermotolerance in matrices with low water activity. However, limited data is publicly available for the thermotolerance of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 (a Salmonella surrogate). The aims of this study were to identify differences in thermal inactivation rates between these organisms in three different low-moisture foods. Three model low-moisture foods (peanut butter, powder infant formula, and wheat flour) were inoculated with either E. faecium, a Salmonella spp. cocktail, or a L. monocytogenes cocktail using a dry inoculation method for a total …

Lymphatic filariasis is a very painful and disfiguring helminth disease caused by the tissue nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. This parasitosis is considered a Neglected Tropical Disease and it is a major public health burden for 72 tropical countries of Africa, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and South America. Despite the effectiveness of many control programs, there remains the need to develop new pharmacological agents to treat lymphatic filariasis, as most programs rely on a limited variety of drugs that are expensive, logistically difficult to obtain, and can lead to drug resistance. The Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic …

Magnitude Matters: The Impact Of Pandemic Threat Perceptions On The Effectiveness Of Health Message Framing Across Countries, Anthony K. Asare, Tilottama Ghosh Chowdhury, Patricia Norberg, Jun Kang, Richard Bannor
Global Advances in Business Communication
Pandemic diseases are characterized as being highly contagious, where there is limited control and a threat of spreading globally. During a pandemic outbreak, hysteria and media hype make it difficult for medical authorities to get accurate and useful information to individuals to minimize the spread of the epidemic. This research investigates the impact of message framing on intentions to interact with health messages, taking into account perceived magnitude of the pandemic threat. The authors conduct research in three countries – U.S., China, and Ghana. Study 1 was a between-subjects design to examine the impact of message frame (positive, negative) in …
