BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis continues to grow in the United States with 46,700 drug overdose deaths due to opioids in 2017 alone. Vet shopping, the practice of soliciting veterinarians for prescription medications, has been receiving national media attention in recent years. A 2014 review of Prescription Monitoring Drug Programs found less than 10 veterinary shoppers nationwide. Still much is unknown about the role of vet shopping and the opioid crisis. This study sought to understand the practice of vet shopping through the eyes of veterinarians practicing in Appalachian counties within the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, United States.

Clinical Evaluation Of Functional State Of Immune System Partucular Components In Patients With Opium Addiction, Sh. Kh. Sultanov, Z. Sh. Ashurov, N. I. Khodzhaeva, L. Sh. Shadmanova, E. M. Lyan

Central Asian Journal of Pediatrics

In this study, a comprehensive research of the phagocytic activity of neutrophils in patients with heroin addiction was carried out. It was found that heroin addiction is accompanied by pronounced changes in the cellular-humoral defense system of the body. Opiate substances have a mainly suppressive effect on immunocompetent cells. The disorganization of the immune systems, which are closely interconnected with the central nervous system, leads to disruption of cellular and humoral homeostasis and aggravates the process of drug addiction. One of the existing hypotheses of the cause of this process is the theory of a decrease in the function of …

Plant Defensin Antibacterial Mode Of Action Against Pseudomonas Species, Andrew E. Sathoff, Shawn Lewenza, Deborah A. Samac Jun 2020

Plant Defensin Antibacterial Mode Of Action Against Pseudomonas Species, Andrew E. Sathoff, Shawn Lewenza, Deborah A. Samac

Research & Publications

Background: Though many plant defensins exhibit antibacterial activity, little is known about their antibacterial mode of action (MOA). Antimicrobial peptides with a characterized MOA induce the expression of multiple bacterial outer membrane modifications, which are required for resistance to these membrane-targeting peptides. Mini-Tn5- lux mutant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with Tn insertions disrupting outer membrane protective modifications were assessed for sensitivity against plant defensin peptides. These transcriptional lux reporter strains were also evaluated for lux gene expression in response to sublethal plant defensin exposure. Also, a plant pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae was modified through transposon mutagenesis to …

The City Of Louisville Encapsulates The United States Demographics, Stephen P. Furmanek, Connor Glick, Thomas Chandler, Mahder A. Tella, William A. Mattingly, Julio A. Ramirez, Timothy L. Wiemken

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

Background: One weakness that applies to all population-based studies performed in the United States (US) is that investigators perform population-based extrapolations without providing objective statistical evidence to show how well a particular city is a suitable surrogate for the US. The objective of this study was to propose and utilize a novel computational metric to compare individual US cities with the US average.

Methods: This was a secondary data analysis of publicly available databases containing US sociodemographic, economic, and health-related data. In total, 58 demographic, housing, economic, health behavior, and health status variables for each US city with a residential …

Intoxication With Endogenous Angiotensin Ii: A Covid-19 Hypothesis, Adonis Sfera, Carolina Osorio, Nyla Jafri, Eddie Lee Diaz, Jose Campo Maldonado

School of Medicine Publications

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has spread rapidly around the globe. However, despite its high pathogenicity and transmissibility, the severity of the associated disease, COVID-19, varies widely. While the prognosis is favorable in most patients, critical illness, manifested by respiratory distress, thromboembolism, shock, and multi-organ failure, has been reported in about 5% of cases. Several studies have associated poor COVID-19 outcomes with the exhaustion of natural killer cells and cytotoxic T cells, lymphopenia, and elevated serum levels of D-dimer. In this article, we propose a common pathophysiological denominator for these negative prognostic markers, endogenous, angiotensin II toxicity. We hypothesize …

Myocardial Echinococcosis: Rare Manifestation Of A Common Parasitic Disease In Northern Tanzania, Ahmed Jusabani, Clement F. Kalambo, Mubashir Jusabani, Salim Surani

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

Hydatid (Echinococcal) disease often involves the liver and lungs but in sporadic cases, it can involve cardiac structures. A 24-year-old male was referred with symptoms of cough and shortness of breath and a provisional diagnosis of metastatic disease of unknown primary to the lung, which was based on a chest X-ray (CXR). Incidentally, on echocardiogram, he was found to have right ventricular (RV) and myocardial multiseptated cysts, which were compatible with cardiac echinococcosis, as the patient had multiple bilateral lung cysts as well. Imaging with ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has ameliorated the diagnosis of …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Walker’s Manihot, Manihot walkerae, is an endangered plant that is endemic to the Tamaulipan thornscrub ecoregion of extreme southern Texas and northeastern Mexico. M. walkerae populations are highly fragmented and are found on both protected public lands and private property. Habitat loss and competition by invasive species are the most detrimental threats for M. walkerae; however, the effect of climate change on M. walkerae’s geographic distribution remains unexplored and could result in further range restrictions. Our objectives are to evaluate the potential effects of climate change on the distribution of M. walkerae and assess the usefulness of natural protected areas …

Declines Of Black-Billed Magpie (Pica Hudsonia) And Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus) In The North-Central United States Following The Invasion Of West Nile Virus, Stephen J. Brenner, Joel G. Jorgensen Jun 2020

Declines Of Black-Billed Magpie (Pica Hudsonia) And Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus) In The North-Central United States Following The Invasion Of West Nile Virus, Stephen J. Brenner, Joel G. Jorgensen

Western North American Naturalist

West Nile virus (WNV) is an introduced pathogen, transmitted by mosquitos, that spread across North America following its arrival there in 1999. Birds host the virus, but consequences of the disease to bird species have been variable. A small number of avian species are especially susceptible to WNV, experience high mortality rates when infected, and have shown regional declines apparently because of the disease. Other species have seemingly been unaffected. Transmission of WNV is associated with climate, with higher incidence of transmission in dry areas with warm winters. The north-central United States is an area that exhibits clines in temperature …

Often thought of as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarette use among youth and young adults has steadily increased over the past 10 years. With over 34 percent of high school students and over 7.8 percent of young adults using electronic cigarettes, organizations like the CDC and the FDA have created campaigns and advertisements to combat the epidemic (Truth Initiative). This study uses a 2x2 between subject factoral experiment to gain insights into how varying levels of anti-vaping advertisements’ threat and efficacy elements effect college age students’ perceptions and behaviors towards e-cigarettes. While several of the study’s hypotheses …

Dengue virus (DENV) is the most common and widespread arboviral infection worldwide. Though all four DENV serotypes cocirculate in nature, the clinicopathological framework of these serotypes is undefined in Pakistan. A cross-sectional, observational study was performed to document the circulation of various arboviruses in the Sindh region of Pakistan. Here we describe a population of patients diagnosed with DENV spanning a 2-year period. This study used an orthogonal system of NS1 antigen ELISA followed by RT-PCR for DENV detection and subtyping. A total of 168 NS1 positive patients were evaluated of which 91 patients were serotyped via RT-PCR. There was …

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey

Theses and Dissertations

Rising concerns related to the effects of traffic congestion have led to the search for alternative transportation solutions. Advances in battery technology have resulted in an increase of electric vehicles (EVs), which serve to reduce the impact of many of the negative consequences of congestion, including pollution and the cost of wasted fuel. Furthermore, the energy-efficiency and quiet operation of electric motors have made feasible concepts such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM), in which electric aircraft transport passengers in dense urban areas prone to severe traffic slowdowns. Electrified transportation may be the solution needed to combat urban gridlock, but many …

Low-Cost Diagnostics: Using Paper As A Material And Pens As An Instrument, Annie Armitstead Jun 2020

Low-Cost Diagnostics: Using Paper As A Material And Pens As An Instrument, Annie Armitstead

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIs) are equipment-free tests that produce results quickly using small sample volumes. Colored lines appear as the test runs, indicating the presence of a biomarker. LFIs are ideal in a variety of settings. Development of these assays can be complicated for small team operations, and tests are not sufficiently adaptable for low resource settings. If robust point-of-care tests can be developed on site, they can expand the reach of global diagnostics, improving health around the world. We report a simple empowering LFI (seLFI) that only requires treated printer paper and a plastic backing card. This eliminates the …

Vertebrates On The Brink As Indicators Of Biological Annihilation And The Sixth Mass Extinction, Gerardo Ceballos, Paul R. Ehrlich, Peter H. Raven

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The ongoing sixth mass species extinction is the result of the destruction of component populations leading to eventual extirpation of entire species. Populations and species extinctions have severe implications for society through the degradation of ecosystem services. Here we assess the extinction crisis from a different perspective. We examine 29,400 species of terrestrial vertebrates, and determine which are on the brink of extinction because they have fewer than 1,000 individuals. There are 515 species on the brink (1.7% of the evaluated vertebrates). Around 94% of the populations of 77 mammal and bird species on the brink have been lost in …

We Are Not Alone In Trying To Be Alone, Patricia C. Lopes

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Certain diseases, like colds, tend not to stop us. A paracetamol here, an ibuprofen there, and we are on the go. That is, until we, as a species, are faced with a virus that not only spreads through social contact, but has an estimated reproductive number of 2 to 2.5 and potentially kills 3–4% of those infected (WHO, 2020). To reduce transmission probability of COVID-19, governmental agencies around the world have recommended or enforced measures to decrease social contact; early evidence suggests these measures produce the intended effect (Kucharski et al., 2020).
