Business As Usual: Organizational And Market Responses To The Natural Environment And Magnification Of Inequality, Taylor Martin Holdaway

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Climate change is a multifaceted and insidious grand challenge facing the world. Natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, made more common by climate change, will cause enormous ecological, human, and economic damage across the globe. Businesses, organizations, and markets are critically implicated in climate change due to their culpability for greenhouse gas emissions and their roles in building or hindering adaptive capacity and mediating transfers of wealth resulting from climate change. In my dissertation, I investigate how individuals, businesses, and markets respond to climate-related disasters and extreme weather conditions and how these processes contribute to patterns of inequality in the …

Uncovering Transkingdom Connectivity Through Mapping Host-Microbiota Interactions, Nicole Sonnert Apr 2024

Uncovering Transkingdom Connectivity Through Mapping Host-Microbiota Interactions, Nicole Sonnert

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Our microbiota, the trillions of microbes that constitutively colonize every outward-facing surface of our bodies, have diverse impacts on human physiology, yet the molecular bases for these effects remain mostly unknown. Classical pathogens often invade host tissues and modulate immune responses through interactions with human extracellular and secreted proteins (the ‘exoproteome’). Commensal microbes may also facilitate niche colonization and shape host biology by engaging host exoproteins; however, direct microbiota-exoproteome interactions remain largely unexplored. We developed and validated a novel technology, BActerial Selection to Elucidate Host-microbe Interactions in high Throughput (BASEHIT), that enables proteome-scale assessment of human exoproteome-microbiome interactions. Using BASEHIT, …

Master’s Theses - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Objective: To evaluate the toxicological effects of a phytoecdysteroid and their mammalian metabolites through in vitro experiments using the MCF-7 cell line. Turkesterone levels of 11 commercially available turkesterone supplements were measured using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Methods: The phytoecdysteroid 20-hydroxyecdysone (20HE) underwent two chemical reactions to synthesize two mammalian metabolites; 14-deoxy-20-hydroxyecdysone (14DO) and poststerone. These reactions were accomplished by zinc-mediated reduction and Jones oxidation, respectively. The structure of the products was confirmed via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The turkesterone supplements were investigated using a HPLC on a Kinetex 2.6 μm C18 column, …

Concerns have been raised about the possibility of effects from exposure to short wavelength light (SWL), defined here as 380-550 nm, on human health. The spectral sensitivity of the human circadian timing system peaks at around 480 nm, much shorter than the peak sensitivity of daytime vision (i.e., 555 nm). Some experimental studies have demonstrated effects on the circadian timing system and on sleep from SWL exposure, especially when SWL exposure occurs in the evening or at night. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has identified a lack of consensus among public health officials regarding whether SWL from …

Interrelationships Among Local Values Of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, Heat Index, And Adjusted Temperature, Andrea Giraldo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Occupational heat stress significantly affects outdoor workers who face challenges due to increased heat exposure. Because of the prevalence of heat illness, it is important to measure heat stress for outdoor workers. Monitoring occupational heat stress most often relies on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measure. Heat Index (HI) is a widely used measure to account for air temperature and humidity. Adjusted Temperature (Tadj) considers air temperature, humidity and estimates radiant heat. There is interest in predicting WBGT from HI and HI from WBGT. This study builds on previous USF research by Bernard and Iheanacho and Irvin to evaluate …

Faculty Scholarship

Oxygen (O2) binds to hemoglobin (Hb) in the lungs and is then released (dissociated) in the tissues. The Bohr effect is a physiological mechanism that governs the affinity of Hb for O2 based on pH, where a lower pH results in a lower Hb-O2 affinity and higher Hb-O2 dissociation. Hb-O2 affinity and dissociation are crucial for maintaining aerobic metabolism in cells and tissues. Despite its vital role in human physiology, Hb-O2 dissociation measurement is underutilized in basic research and in clinical laboratories, primarily due to the technical complexity and limited throughput of existing methods. We present a rapid Hb-O2 dissociation …

Ur2m: Uncertainty And Resource-Aware Event Detection On Microcontrollers, Hong Jia, Young D. Kwon, Dong Ma, Nhat Pham, Lorena Qendro, Tam Vu, Cecilia Mascolo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional machine learning techniques are prone to generating inaccurate predictions when confronted with shifts in the distribution of data between the training and testing phases. This vulnerability can lead to severe consequences, especially in applications such as mobile healthcare. Uncertainty estimation has the potential to mitigate this issue by assessing the reliability of a model's output. However, existing uncertainty estimation techniques often require substantial computational resources and memory, making them impractical for implementation on microcontrollers (MCUs). This limitation hinders the feasibility of many important on-device wearable event detection (WED) applications, such as heart attack detection. In this paper, we present …
