On The Reproductive Biology Of The Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus Thynnus, Jessica M. Knapp Jan 2012

On The Reproductive Biology Of The Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus Thynnus, Jessica M. Knapp

Doctoral Dissertations

The Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, is a highly migratory species capable of traversing great distances throughout the North Atlantic Ocean, but spawning is known to occur only in the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico/Straits of Florida. The regulatory body charged with managing Atlantic bluefin tuna, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), currently recognizes two spawning stocks, eastern and western, separated by a management line at 45° W. The eastern stock spawns from May through July in the Mediterranean Sea with an age at first maturity of 3--4 years. Due in part to a …

The Voice Of The Negro: African American Radio, Wvon, And The Struggle For Civil Rights In Chicago, Jennifer Searcy

Dissertations

Little historical research has been done on the role that radio stations in the northern United States played in spreading information related to the Civil Rights Movement. Owned and operated by Chess Records label owners Leonard and Phil Chess, the Chicago radio station WVON 1450 AM, "The Voice of the Negro," was one of the most popular African American radio stations in the country during the 1960s. This dissertation explores how WVON served not only as a lucrative marketing outlet for the label's music and for the national rhythm and blues and soul music industry, but also as a driving …

A Case Study: The Impact Of An Immersion Experience On The Vocation Of Lay Teacher-Leaders In American Jesuit High Schools, Martin Joseph Schreiber

Dissertations

The purpose of this case study explores the impact of an immersion experience to a least developed country on the vocation of lay teacher leaders in American Jesuit High Schools. Nine lay teacher leaders engaged in a four stage process of immersion from November 2009 to August 2010. The study employed the conceptual framework of Edward Hahnenberg's, "Awakening Vocation" to develop a self-understanding of a lay teacher leader's call. The writings of Paulo Freire, Fredrick Buechner and Parker Palmer informed the study's exploration of vocation. Poetry from Mary Oliver and William Stafford functioned as a method for articulating a lay …

Deterritorialization, Pure War, And The Consequences Of Indian Captivity In Transnational Colonial Discourse, Billy J. Stratton Jan 2012

Deterritorialization, Pure War, And The Consequences Of Indian Captivity In Transnational Colonial Discourse, Billy J. Stratton

English and Literary Arts: Faculty Scholarship

The genre of the captivity narrative has operated as a vital circuit for transnational colonial discourse since its inception. Throughout the age of discovery, accounts of the captivity became an indispensible means of connecting the European metropole to foreign lands in Asia and Africa, as well as North and South America. The development of the Indian captivity narrative within the Atlantic context functioned as an effective tool for the dissemination of knowledge concerning the New World and its Indigenous inhabitants. In this essay, I examine some of the ways in which the captivity narrative functions as a colonial apparatus vital …

Social-Network Theory And The Diffusion Of The Search-And-Seizure Exclusionary Rule Among State Courts Between Weeks And Wolf, Laurence A. Benner, Robert Bird, Donald J. Smythe Jan 2012

Social-Network Theory And The Diffusion Of The Search-And-Seizure Exclusionary Rule Among State Courts Between Weeks And Wolf, Laurence A. Benner, Robert Bird, Donald J. Smythe

Faculty Scholarship

In light of the Supreme Court’s recent narrowing of the Fourth Amendment exclusionary rule in cases like Herring v. United States and Davis v. United States, there is renewed interest in whether state supreme courts will maintain or similarly narrow the search and seizure exclusionary rule for violations of their own state constitutions. The pattern of early adoptions of the exclusionary rule as a matter of state law before it was mandated by the federal Constitution may provide interesting insights into how the state supreme courts will respond to cases such as Herring and Davis. This article uses social-network theory …

The Record Of The Twelve, 1835: The Quorum Of The Twelve Apostles' Call And 1835 Mission, Ronal K. Esplin, Sharon E. Nielsen

BYU Studies

In 2011, the Joseph Smith Papers Project of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made public a document created in 1835 by Orson Hyde and William E. McLellin. That document is presented in its entirety here with an introduction and editorial notes. Ronald Esplin and Sharon Nielsen, members of the editorial team of the Joseph Smith Papers, give historical context of the document: in 1835, twelve men were called as the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Joseph Smith instructed the quorum to keep a record of their meetings and actions; the document presented in this article is that …

Vox Populi-Vox Belli: A Historical Study Of Southern Ante Bellum Public Attitudes And Motivations Toward Secession, Julian Boyden Jan 2012

Vox Populi-Vox Belli: A Historical Study Of Southern Ante Bellum Public Attitudes And Motivations Toward Secession, Julian Boyden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines why the south seceded in 1860 as opposed to any other time in the 19th century and what changed the mentalité of the people in the period 1857-1860. The underlying issue in southern politics and the issue of secession was clearly slavery and slavery rested on the economics of cotton. Yet slavery and cotton do not explain why the South seceded in 1860 and not at other times in the preceding seventy years. 1807 saw the outlawing of the international slave trade and 1819 saw Congress pass the Slave Trade Act interdicting the ships involved. In 1828 …

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt Jan 2012

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite a vast amount of research on Late Antiquity, little attention has been paid to certain figures that prove to be influential during this time. The focus of historians on Constantine I, the first Roman Emperor to allegedly convert to Christianity, has often come at the cost of ignoring Constantine's predecessor, Diocletian, sometimes known as the "Second Father of the Roman Empire". The success of Constantine's empire has often been attributed to the work and reforms of Diocletian, but there have been very few studies of the man beyond simple biography. This work will attempt to view three of Diocletian's …

Biodiversity Of Malaysian Mangrove Fungi And Phylogeography Of Verruculina Enalia From Selected Southeast Asian Countries / Siti Sarah Sharuddin, Siti Sarah Sharuddin

Student Works (2010-2019)

Mangroves are important to the ecosystem as it protects the coastline from erosion, act as a nursery ground for the young sea life creatures and become a habitat for many organisms including hundreds of species of birds (both migratory and resident),monkeys, and lizards. Mangroves also provide a wide variety of substrates for fungi to grow. However, this study will focus on the lignocellulosic material only. Biodiversity of lignicolous mangrove fungi were sampled from three study sites of the Peninsular Malaysia mangrove forest. Cape Rachado (a sandy mangrove forest dominated by Rhizophora apiculata), Telok Pelandok (rocky shores with sandy mangroves dominated …

High Incidence Of Subsequent Pregnancy In Teens Tested For Stds In The Emergency Department, Alla Smith

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

HIGH INCIDENCE OF SUBSEQUENT PREGNANCY IN TEENS TESTED FOR STDs IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT. Alla L. Smith and Lei Chen. Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.

Teen pregnancy continues to be an important public health issue in the United States and elsewhere. Teens at risk for unplanned pregnancies often seek care in emergency departments (EDs). The ED therefore represents a potentially important arena for interventions to prevent subsequent unwanted pregnancies. Establishing the risk of subsequent pregnancy and the time interval from ED visit to conception (Time to Conception) is a …

Justice In Context: Assessing Contextualism As An Approach To Justice, Michael Buckley Jan 2012

Justice In Context: Assessing Contextualism As An Approach To Justice, Michael Buckley

Publications and Research

Moral and political philosophers are increasingly using empirical data to inform their normative theories. This has sparked renewed interest into questions concerning the relationship between facts and principles. A recent attempt to frame these questions within a broader approach to normative theory comes from David Miller, who has on several occasions defended ‘contextualism’ as the best approach to justice. Miller argues that the context of distribution itself brings one or another political principle into play. This paper examines this claim. It considers several plausible strategies for carrying out Miller’s general project and argues that each strategy fails. Nevertheless, the author …

Balkan Minds: Transnational Nationalism And The Transformation Of South Slavic Immigrant Identity In Chicago, 1890-1941, Dejan Kralj Jan 2012

Balkan Minds: Transnational Nationalism And The Transformation Of South Slavic Immigrant Identity In Chicago, 1890-1941, Dejan Kralj

Dissertations (1 year embargo)

At the start of the twentieth century, America was inundated with unskilled workers eager to fuel the engines of the new economy. The South Slavs of the Balkans joined countless others from the furthest corners of the European continent during the final years of the nineteenth century and first two decades of the twentieth. Millions of foreign and unfamiliar faces, outlandishly clad, replaced the previous fair-haired and fair-skinned Western Europeans that originally populated the nation. These innumerably diverse peoples of eastern and southern European origin redefined the character of twentieth-century America.

The vast majority of South Slavic immigrants arrived in …

Down-Sizing The Little Guy Myth In Legal Definitions, Mirit Eyal-Cohen Jan 2012

Down-Sizing The Little Guy Myth In Legal Definitions, Mirit Eyal-Cohen

Articles

What is a “small business” in the eyes of the law? There is not one standard definition. Current legal definitions of a firm's size are inconsistent and overinclusive. They vary from one area of the law to another and within various sections of the same law. They create a skewed picture and result in data distortion that reinforces favoritism toward small entities, as studies on the contribution of small businesses to the economy are greatly dependent on these studies' delineation of the term “small.” In this time of huge deficits and rise in economic inequality, a lot of money is …

China As A Multi-National Country : A Novel Interpretation Of Chinese Nationalism, Zhaojin Lu Jan 2012

China As A Multi-National Country : A Novel Interpretation Of Chinese Nationalism, Zhaojin Lu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Chinese nationalism in official discourse is conspicuously reflected in CCP's territorial claims to Tibet and Taiwan, where local nationalism is challenging the official definition of China as a unitary multi-national country as the constitution describes. Conventional wisdom, utilized by political propaganda, is considering the contemporary Chinese national boundary as the legacy of "Chinese history", of which the popular version is deliberately depicted in public educational materials. This paper presents a qualitative content analysis of history textbook used in high school in China, showing the historical narratives, as a result of selection, about the Chinese nationhood boundary in ancient China, especially …

"Rumors Which Became His Reputation" : Christopher Marlowe's Afterlife In Fiction And Biography, Kaitlin Albertson Jan 2012

"Rumors Which Became His Reputation" : Christopher Marlowe's Afterlife In Fiction And Biography, Kaitlin Albertson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Reconstructing the lives of historical literary figures when we possess only a few disconnected pieces of evidence proves to be a challenge for biographers and historical fiction writers alike. I examine the life of Christopher Marlowe as it is presented in a number of biographies and historical fictions and identify different approaches to the Marlowe narrative and the various arguments in favor of and against these (re-)constructions. Marlowe's life with its various gaps and mysterious aspects offers a case study of the reconstruction of literary lives. Fiction writers necessarily blur the line between fact and fiction, but biographers engage in …

This study examined how public secondary schools and educators were portrayed in American films of the 1990s. Thirty films were selected for study that were produced and released in the decade of the 1990s. Content analysis and a "Film Analysis Form" produced answers to eight questions regarding the learning environments, portrayal of educators and students, the academic and life lessons taught, and positive or negative statements about education in the films of this decade. The results shoa series of complex environments, educators, students, and academic and life lessons delivered. An assessment of the positive and negative portrayal provided more negative …

Nothing Less Than An Activist: Marge Baroni, Catholicism, And The Natchez, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Eva Elizabeth Walton Jan 2012

Nothing Less Than An Activist: Marge Baroni, Catholicism, And The Natchez, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Eva Elizabeth Walton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a religious and social history of the life of Natchez, Mississippi Catholic activist Marjorie R. Baroni (1924-1986). The study examines Baroni's Catholic faith-driven activism as a counter-narrative to the dominant Protestant narratives of religious motivations in the greater civil rights movement. In analyzing Baroni's story as a lived theological drama, I offer Baroni as a vessel for studying often overlooked Catholic influences in the movement: (1) The activist Catholic faith promoted by Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement (2) The effects of the more inclusive decrees of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) on the Catholic Church …

Chinese/Chinese American Students At The University Of Mississippi From 1946 To 1975, Hsin-Yi Sandy Kao Jan 2012

Chinese/Chinese American Students At The University Of Mississippi From 1946 To 1975, Hsin-Yi Sandy Kao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The historical integration of the University of Mississippi (UM) brought both national and local attention when James Meredith was escorted by U.S. Marshals to enroll and attend classes on October 1, 1962 (Cohodas, 1997; Doyle, 2001; Eagles, 2009). Since the integration of UM, racial issues and efforts to promote racial reconciliation primarily have been defined in binary terms of Black and White. In this way, few people hardly noticed that a small number of Chinese/Chinese American students were actually attending UM prior to the historic integration by Meredith, a circumstance present in other southern universities that led historian Peter Wallenstein …

The Effects Of A Violence Prevention Intervention On Prosocial Behavior And Perception Of School Safety, Cheon Carlon Graham Jan 2012

The Effects Of A Violence Prevention Intervention On Prosocial Behavior And Perception Of School Safety, Cheon Carlon Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order for schools to be successful in providing students with developmentally appropriate instruction and social experiences, an atmosphere of safety and protection is required. The recent spike in school shootings over the past 15 years has created a sense of urgency to examine the dynamics of school violence in order to generate and implement effective security measures (Brooks, Schiraldi, & Ziedenberg, 2000). Unlike traditional problem-focused approaches, the positive approach to school violence is preventive, solution-driven, and systemic. The positive approach to violence prevention at school focuses on building a set of social and emotional strengths that are incompatible with …

Propaganda Use By The Union And Confederacy In Great Britain During The American Civil War, 1861-1862, Annalise Policicchio Jan 2012

Propaganda Use By The Union And Confederacy In Great Britain During The American Civil War, 1861-1862, Annalise Policicchio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the beginning of the American Civil War, the United States (the Union) already had international diplomatic status, whereas the Confederate States of America wanted foreign recognition of its independence. The two governments sent agents and propagandists across the Atlantic, in particular to Great Britain to support their objectives. The Confederacy and the Union used various avenues, including rallies, talking with members of Parliament, and publications to convince the British that supporting the Confederacy was the correct action to take. The Union's most well-known weapon emerged in January 1863: the Emancipation Proclamation. From the moment President Abraham Lincoln announced in …
