Scattered Data Interpolation On Embedded Submanifolds With Restricted Positive Definite Kernels: Sobolev Error Estimates, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady Wright Jun 2012

Scattered Data Interpolation On Embedded Submanifolds With Restricted Positive Definite Kernels: Sobolev Error Estimates, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we present error estimates for kernel interpolation at scattered sites on manifolds. The kernels we consider will be obtained by the restriction of positive definite kernels on Rd, such as radial basis functions, to a smooth, compact embedded submanifold M ⊂ Rd with no boundary. For restricted kernels having finite smoothness, we provide a complete characterization of the native space on M. After this and some preliminary setup, we present Sobolev-type error estimates for the interpolation problem for smooth and non-smooth kernels. In the case of non-smooth kernels, we provide error estimates for target …

Charity And Nationalism: The Case Of ‘Abd Allah Al-Nadim’S Islamic Philanthropic Society, Mohamed Amr Gamal-Eldin Jun 2012

Charity And Nationalism: The Case Of ‘Abd Allah Al-Nadim’S Islamic Philanthropic Society, Mohamed Amr Gamal-Eldin

Theses and Dissertations

My paper argues that charity can be used as a lens to examine nationalism. Due to the transformation of the institution of charity in late nineteenth-century Egypt new charities were developed. In the nineteenth century charity was changing due to the state centralization policies of Mehmed ‘Ali (r. 1805-48), who founded state-run shelters and soup kitchens and enacted prohibitions against begging. Later because of decentralization policies under Said Pasha (r.1854-1863) and Khedive Ismail (r.1863-1879), there was a move away from state control of charity, and the gradual erection of a number of private charitable associations that aimed to help the …

A Small Scale Energy Harvester From Wind Induced Vibrations, Ahmed Sayed Ahmed Abdel-Fattah Jun 2012

A Small Scale Energy Harvester From Wind Induced Vibrations, Ahmed Sayed Ahmed Abdel-Fattah

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a new device for wind energy harvesting on a small-scale was proposed. This system is well suited for powering remote wireless sensors as a cheaper, more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional dry cell batteries which is a need that is being addressed by many recent research studies. The device consists of a cantilever beam with the free end attached to a square section box that is subjected to the air stream inducing aero-elastic flutter. Flutter is a coupled torsion, plunge instability that has been historically studied to be avoided by aerospace and civil engineers. A magnet is …

Growing Gardens: Botanical Gardens, Public Space And Conservation, Terra Celeste Colburn

Master's Theses

This thesis examines the history of botanical gardens and their evolution

from ancient spaces to the modern gardens of the 20th century. I provide a brief

overview of botanical gardens, with a focus on the unique intersection of public

participation and scientific study that started to occur within garden spaces during

the 20th century, which still continues today. I reveal the history of gardens that

influenced the uses of gardens today, with a focus on: the first ancient gardens

and the dependency societies had on them, the influence of science in gardens

starting in the Enlightenment period, the shift away …

Multidimensional Item Response Theory In Clinical Measurement: A Bifactor Graded-Response Model Analysis Of The Outcome-Questionnaire-45.2, Arjan Berkeljon May 2012

Multidimensional Item Response Theory In Clinical Measurement: A Bifactor Graded-Response Model Analysis Of The Outcome-Questionnaire-45.2, Arjan Berkeljon

Theses and Dissertations

Bifactor Item Response Theory (IRT) models are presented as a plausible structure for psychological measures with a primary scale and two or more subscales. A bifactor graded response model, appropriate for polytomous categorical data, was fit to two university counseling center datasets (N=4,679 and N=4,500) of Outcome-Questionnaire-45.2 (OQ) psychotherapy intake data. The bifactor model showed superior fit compared to a unidimensional IRT model. IRT item parameters derived from the bifactor model show that items discriminate well on the primary scale. Items on the OQ's subscales maintain some discrimination ability over and above the primary scale. However, reliability estimates for the …

The Making Of An American Imperialist: Major Edward Austin Burke, Reconstruction New Orleans And The Road To Central America, Kathryn K. Conley

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The period of Reconstruction following the American Civil War, and its legacy, have been the subjects of long debate among historians. Scholars, though, have yet to fully explore important connections between American Reconstruction, the New South that followed, and the period of U.S. imperialism in Central America in the late nineteenth century. The storied career of Major Edward Austin Burke—a Kentucky-born Louisiana Democrat who went on to become a proponent of expansionism and imperialism in Honduras—illuminates the transnational implications of Reconstruction and its aftermath. Through careful examination of personal papers, news accounts, promotional materials, Congressional testimonies and other government records, …

Delayed Effects Of Oil Exposure On Fish, Corinne E. Hicken May 2012

Delayed Effects Of Oil Exposure On Fish, Corinne E. Hicken

Fisheries

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are continuously added to aqueous environments through point source and non-point source pollution and can cause deleterious effects on exposed fish populations. Historically, studies have shown that acute PAH exposure causes only short-term effects in adult fish which were resolved when the exposure ended. Chronic exposure to PAHs, however -- even at the less susceptible juvenile and adult stages -- can cause a host of effects including lesions, lower body length and weight, and reduced swimming ability. More recently studies of embryonic fish have demonstrated that much lower PAH concentrations can cause lethal and sub-lethal effects …

Inside The Score In The 21st Century: Techniques For Contemporary Large Jazz Ensemble Composition, Tyler Dennis May 2012

Inside The Score In The 21st Century: Techniques For Contemporary Large Jazz Ensemble Composition, Tyler Dennis

Honors Theses

This study will attempt to de-mystify some of the techniques utilized in contemporary large ensemble jazz arranging. Large ensemble writing has morphed drastically from its earlier, more well-known inceptions, and yet there is no academic literature out there to explain exactly what this change entails. Through this study, I will attempt to break down the components of this music in order to provide insight for the non-musician and inspiration for the aspiring jazz composer. There is a wealth of knowledge to be found in the large ensemble music of the past decade, and I will attempt to systematically break this …
