Assessment And Design Of Disposable Medical And Adaptive Apparel, Ling Chang Fu, I Lai Ching, Sheng Guan Shing Jul 2012

Assessment And Design Of Disposable Medical And Adaptive Apparel, Ling Chang Fu, I Lai Ching, Sheng Guan Shing

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This study discussed the design of functional clothing for patients who suffer from spinal cord injury-induced lower-limb disabilities caused by car accidents or illness. Recycled fibers were used as the basic material, and digital printing technology used to create different color combinations. Ready-made clothes in Taiwan are not suitable for with physical disable patients or those with urine drainage bags. The fabric is not antibacterial, and the designs are dull. The study surveyed physicians and patients in order to gain an indepth understanding of patients’ actual needs. This study included four parts: 1) questionnaire survey and interviews with four physical …

When Was Judicial Self-Restraint, Aziz Huq Jul 2012

When Was Judicial Self-Restraint, Aziz Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This Essay responds to Judge Posner’s Jorde Symposium Essay The Rise and Fall of Judicial Restraint by analyzing the question of when, if ever, has judicial self-restraint thrived in the federal courts. Its central aim is to shed historicizing light on the trajectory of judicial activism by imaginatively rifling through an array of canonical and somewhat-less-than-canonical empirical identification strategies. Two conclusions follow from the inquiry. First, I find that the available data on the historical trajectory of judicial restraint are surprisingly poor, and it is necessary to offer any judgment about the historical path of judicial activism with great caution. …

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper is intended as a scope paper for the comparative study of eco-tourism in Queensland, Australia and Japan based on: The Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin Watch in Queensland as well as the Ogasawara Whale-watching Association in Japan. Three particular aspects of the concept underlying successful eco-tourism initiatives will be emphasized in the paper: involvement of local associations, defined rights of access to the eco-tourism resource, and the role of the state in supporting eco-tourism initiatives.

Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes Jul 2012

Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper argues that the primary advantage of the case study, its ability to reveal insight into ‘real-life’ contemporary phenomena (the here and now) set against critical incidents, happenings or events over time (cause and effect), could be undermined by a lack of methodological rigor and sound empiricism in design research. Often the ‘one off’ is reported as a ‘case’ without the critical insight or analytical discourse necessary to derive sound theory from practice. A systematic audit of design case studies in four of the leading design research journals has been undertaken along with a detailed analysis of the type, …

Beyond Post-Modernity In Mathematics Education, Ole Skovsmose Jul 2012

Beyond Post-Modernity In Mathematics Education, Ole Skovsmose

The Mathematics Enthusiast

A radical form of postmodernity is presented with reference to Nietzsche’s ideas with respect to truth, knowledge, sciences, progress, democracy, and ethical values in general. Thereafter is presented Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge. This brings us forward to the notion of genealogy, which is a defining idea for the postmodern conception of critique. However, it is emphasised that a critique can address the generativity of mathematical rationality by considering mathematics-based fabrications. Finally, imagination is presented as yet another feature of a critical enterprise. It is illustrated how such a three dimensional critical enterprise is relevant for both mathematics and mathematics education. …

Lack Of Men, Flame Throwers And Rabbit Drives: Student Life In Australia's First Rural Teachers College 1945-1955, Anthony Potts Jul 2012

Lack Of Men, Flame Throwers And Rabbit Drives: Student Life In Australia's First Rural Teachers College 1945-1955, Anthony Potts

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article examines student life in an Australian rural teachers college. The paper is informed by studies on university student life and extends these to Australia’s first rural teachers college in the period 1945-1955. It explores the diversity of students’ experiences in a small college with predominately female students gradually supplemented by male students. It looks at staff student relations in a college struggling to train teachers for rural Australian towns in the immediate post World War II period. While these rural students’ lives were similar to those portrayed in the standard histories of teacher education students were well aware …

Impact Of Adopting Hris On Three Tiers Of Hrm: Evidence From Developing Economy, Irfan Saleem Jul 2012

Impact Of Adopting Hris On Three Tiers Of Hrm: Evidence From Developing Economy, Irfan Saleem

Business Review

In information based economies, cross-sectional studies are needed to uncover missing linkage between Human Resource Management and Information Technology. Consequently Human Resource (HR) researchers and managers need to rethink about achieving organizational objectives with and through the people added by modernized technology in this information age. The main objective of this study is to identify the contribution of Human Resource Information System (HRIS) adoption impact on three tiers i.e. Operational, Functional and Strategic Human Resource Management (HRM). Findings show that that HRIS adoption significantly impacts HRM Operational Processes and moderately facilitates its Functional Processes and provides insignificant support for Strategic …

Post-Reform Medicaid Before The Court: Discordant Advocacy Reflects Conflicting Attitudes, Nicole Huberfeld Jul 2012

Post-Reform Medicaid Before The Court: Discordant Advocacy Reflects Conflicting Attitudes, Nicole Huberfeld

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court will decide two major Medicaid cases this term that raise major questions about the program and the tensions it creates between the federal government and the states. The Court heard oral arguments on October 3d in Douglas v. Independent Living Center, a dispute between California and its Medicaid providers regarding reimbursement cuts due to California’s budget crisis. The Medicaid providers argue that these proposed cuts are so extreme as to violate federal law and thus the Supremacy Clause. Their contention hinges on the Equal Access Provision of the Medicaid Act, which commands states to pay healthcare providers …

Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel Jul 2012

Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel

Anthós

As a continent, Africa has been explored, exploited, and largely abandoned by the West. During the colonial era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, foreign powers encountered diverse cultures, superstitions and disease before promptly labeling the entire continent a dangerous and primitive place. For early explorers and colonialists, disease and the threat of ill health is what defined Africa. They overlooked the pre-existing strategies and practices that Africans had adapted to guard against certain diseases, either ignoring them or labeling the misunderstood safety nets as primitive. Also overlooked was the importance of societal organization and communal cooperation among …

Revenge And Its Implications: Literati Discourse Of Justice In Late Qing And Modern Chinese Fiction, Yoojin Soh Jun 2012

Revenge And Its Implications: Literati Discourse Of Justice In Late Qing And Modern Chinese Fiction, Yoojin Soh

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

My dissertation explores literati criticism of injustice embedded in revenge narratives. Ranging from the late Qing to modern China, this research project elaborates on the existing scholarship regarding historical and cultural meanings of revenge to demonstrate the use of earlier textual sources by intellectual writers to embody their ideas and strategies. The literati community inherited a keen sense of injustice in society from previous writing practice and passed it down to later generations. Revenge narratives were able to reinforce this intellectual tradition because the authors of social criticism could use fiction to express their anger and frustration over injustices suffered …

Oral History Heirlooms: Vitality And Substance In Learning, Arlene Abate Carpenter Jun 2012

Oral History Heirlooms: Vitality And Substance In Learning, Arlene Abate Carpenter

Theses and Dissertations

The major problem confronting educators is incorporating a simple, profitable, stimulating, and integrated learning technique in the classroom that motivates students, internalizes lessons, and produces active, enriched learners. This thesis demonstrates that the oral history genre is the viable solution. Nine planned project stages guide educators in establishing a new dimension of knowledge for students where interviews and research combine living memories with documented resources to create and preserve personalized history. The author obtained information through personal interviews with family members from the descendents of Vito Antonio Mevoli, Filomena (Onorato) Mevoli, Dominick Abate, and Catherine (Lorusso) Abate and researched data …

The Complex Origin Of Astyanax Cavefish, Joshua B. Gross Jun 2012

The Complex Origin Of Astyanax Cavefish, Joshua B. Gross

KIP Articles

Background The loss of phenotypic characters is a common feature of evolution. Cave organisms provide excellent models for investigating the underlying patterns and processes governing the evolutionary loss of phenotypic traits. The blind Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus, represents a particularly strong model for both developmental and genetic analyses as these fish can be raised in the laboratory and hybridized with conspecific surface form counterparts to produce large F2 pedigrees. As studies have begun to illuminate the genetic bases for trait evolution in these cavefish, it has become increasingly important to understand these phenotypic changes within the context of cavefish origins. …

Political Emotions: Toward A Fresh Perspective On Collective Emotion In Composition Work, Ingrid Jonna Gilfus Jun 2012

Political Emotions: Toward A Fresh Perspective On Collective Emotion In Composition Work, Ingrid Jonna Gilfus

Writing Program – Dissertations

This dissertation examines theories of emotion in politically contentious discourse in order to better understand the implications for teachers and students in composition classrooms where critical pedagogical practices lead to contentious political work. I suggest that partly as a result of the social and political turn in composition studies, the expectation for disrupting the normative political values and beliefs of students has become part of the curriculum in many writing classrooms. Yet teachers and students charged with such learning goals may be largely unaware of and unprepared for the role emotion might play in this teaching and learning situation. I …

Redefining, Crafting, And Re/Presenting Contemporary Ethnicities: Honduran National Identity, 1994–2006, Cordelia A. Frewen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, Fourth World populations, including those in Honduras, have been steadily gaining partial recognition of cultural rights; yet often official discourses of national identity continue to subsume cultural traditions of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. Honduras's heterogeneous ethnic pluralism has historically been combined to promote a more cohesive national identity of a homogenized, mayanized, indo-Hispanic mestizaje. Exclusion and mis- or under-representation of indigenous groups is reinforced by popular imagination, particularly in the cultural heritage and tourism sectors. Firmly situated within regional Latin American and global trends, over the past two decades, official discourse on …
