The purpose of this content analysis was to categorize, code, and analyze trends related to graduate music therapy theses/dissertations completed from the year 2000 to 2012. Information was gathered related to what American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved schools have graduate programs and how many students have graduated from these institutions. Research questions addressed in this study were to determine (1) who were the thesis/dissertation advisors for students, (2) what was the type of goal for the research, (3) what types of studies were completed, and (4) what populations were studied.
Results included 35 schools offering graduate music therapy degrees. …
Validating The Use Of Sex Steroid Hormones Extracted From The Skeletal Muscle Tissue Of The Atlantic Sharpnose Shark (Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae), Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias), And The Little Skate (Leucoraja Erinacea) To Assess Reproductive Status In Elasmobranch Fishes, Bianca Prohaska
All Theses And Dissertations
Currently, circulating concentrations of plasma steroid hormones are used as one means to assess reproductive maturity and reproductive cycles in elasmobranchs. However, obtaining blood non-lethally from large and/or endangered species can be problematic because of difficulties involved with specimen handling. Thus, there is a need to develop new approaches and techniques to study the reproductive biology of elasmobranchs. Previous work conducted on other classes of vertebrates has demonstrated that steroid hormones can be successfully extracted from muscle tissue. The process of collecting muscle tissue samples is quick, minimally invasive, and may be conducted without removing the animal from the water, …
Building A House Of Peace: The Origins Of The Imperial Presidency And The Framework For Executive Power, 1933-1960, Katherine Elizabeth Ellison
Building A House Of Peace: The Origins Of The Imperial Presidency And The Framework For Executive Power, 1933-1960, Katherine Elizabeth Ellison
Dissertations
This project offers a fundamental rethinking of the origins of the imperial presidency, taking an interdisciplinary approach as perceived through the interactions of the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches of government during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. In light of the end of the Cold War and twenty-first century recurrence of the imperial presidency after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the original thesis proposed by historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. in The Imperial Presidency and other works based on the periodization of the Cold War is in need of updating.
By utilizing legal theories, political science models, and historical analysis, …
Social Media And Peer Review: Edmodo In The Composition Classroom, Mark Gardner
Social Media And Peer Review: Edmodo In The Composition Classroom, Mark Gardner
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
Peer review has become a staple in the composition classroom because of its ability to help students to see writing in a social context. While students use social writing on a daily basis on social networking sites (SNS), these communicative tools have yet to be accepted as valuable pedagogical tools in composition classrooms. This case study investigates how students use Edmodo, an education-specific SNS, to perform a semi-anonymous peer review activity with students from another class. Due to the lack of research in composition studies related to SNS use as a peer review tool, this study expands the conversations of …
Air Too Pure For Slavery And The Rights Of British Liberty: The Black Experience In London, 1772-1883, Tony A. Frazier
Air Too Pure For Slavery And The Rights Of British Liberty: The Black Experience In London, 1772-1883, Tony A. Frazier
Dissertations
This dissertation presents abundant evidence that people of African descent were very present and visible in eighteenth-century London society. In the eighteenth century, London was one of the largest cities in the world with a population that reached almost 700,000 in 1750 and over a million in 1800. In addition, Great Britain was the leading slave trafficking nation in the world. Therefore, it was no surprise that the debate concerning black freedom and liberty was center stage in one of the most important regions in Europe and the Atlantic world. This question, much like the development of slavery in eighteenth-century …
Which Is The Wisest Course?: The Transformation In Mormon Temple Consciousness, 1870–1898, Richard E. Bennett
Which Is The Wisest Course?: The Transformation In Mormon Temple Consciousness, 1870–1898, Richard E. Bennett
BYU Studies
From the 1870s to 1890, the first Latter-day Saint temples in Utah were completed and temple work was fully underway, and at the same time the Church was being legally compelled to abandon polygamy. In 1890, Wilford Woodruff faced disenfranchisement of the Church and the loss of the temples. He was prepared to defend polygamy, but upon revelation from God changed his course and issued the manifesto ending plural marriage. Richard E. Bennett argues that a growing temple consciousness among Church leaders was a more significant cause of the manifesto than political ends, including the Saints' desire for statehood. The …

A significant amount of data is obtained through …
Teacher Leadership: Emergent Leadership In A Complex System Functioning As A Professional Learning Community, Andrea Lorene Voshell
Teacher Leadership: Emergent Leadership In A Complex System Functioning As A Professional Learning Community, Andrea Lorene Voshell
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The extent to which organizational, social, cultural, and leadership contexts within schools support or impede the complexity of emergent leadership as it relates to professional learning communities was investigated in this study. Through in-depth interviews exploring ways in which teacher leadership manifests itself, the ability of teachers to understand their own leadership capacity, and how their emergent leadership influences others, data from this study reshape the notion that schools do not need to reform, but need to transform from traditional schools of teaching into contemporary schools of learning, providing the type of professional knowledge needed to foster 21st century skills …
Postcolonial Fissures And The Contingent Nation An Antinationalist Critique Of Philippine Historiography, Lisandro E. Claudio
Postcolonial Fissures And The Contingent Nation An Antinationalist Critique Of Philippine Historiography, Lisandro E. Claudio
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle examines instances in Philippine historiography where nationalism, as a unitary end, has been used to elide and obscure class difference. It begins with a partial explanation of the lacunae in antinationalist thinking in the Philippines, and then proceeds to a critique of contemporary nationalist historiography. Using historians Zeus Salazar and Reynaldo Ileto as case studies, it examines how nationalist historiography can serve as means to implicitly justify localized acts of class oppression. The works of these scholars, while crucial in forwarding critiques of colonialism and neocolonialism, privilege nationalist unity over thorough examinations of disjunctures produced by class difference.

Brian Friel’S Modern Irish Drama: Writing The Past, Present, & Future, Brian F. Mccabe
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Postcolonial and historicized readings of Irish literatures describe the evils of colonialism, and the ways it has distorted nationhood and nation-building to serve the ends of greedy empires. But, what happens to a nation or nations in the vacuum after a major colonial power abandons the colony or is driven out? [excerpt]
Casting A New Mold: The Story Of The Iron Molders’ International Union And The Organization Of National Labor, Jason Dedeker
Casting A New Mold: The Story Of The Iron Molders’ International Union And The Organization Of National Labor, Jason Dedeker
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The doings of the labor movement during the Civil War were crucial in the development of the great time of unions at the turn of the 19th-century. While the nation was focused on the issue of slavery, the free labor force of the North strove for improved working conditions and more power in the workplace. Workers and the unions they formed faced unique challenges in the Civil War era. The international labor community found the problem of slavery more pressing than the plight of Northern workers. The United States government, comprised mainly of Republicans, discouraged the tactics and goals of …
Evidence-Based Federal Civil Rulemaking: A New Contemporaneous Case Coding Rule, Will Rhee
Evidence-Based Federal Civil Rulemaking: A New Contemporaneous Case Coding Rule, Will Rhee
Pace Law Review
This Article proposes a new Federal Rule concerning the federal courts’ online case management/electronic case filing system (CM/ECF). Whenever a party, the court clerk, or the presiding judge in a civil lawsuit electronically files a document, the Model Rule requires her to answer standardized online questions about that document. These questions are limited to indisputable factual information about case-related outcomes. By answering these questions, the filer codes research variables contemporaneously with the filing of every document. Such mandatory contemporaneous coding would provide comprehensive, reliable, and inexpensive descriptive empirical data6 for evidence-based rulemaking. This Federal Courts CM/ECF Descriptive Dataset should be …
The First Mission Of The Twelve Apostles: 1835, Maclane Elon Heward
The First Mission Of The Twelve Apostles: 1835, Maclane Elon Heward
Theses and Dissertations
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an administrative and ecclesiastical quorum. The Church, first organized in 1830, did not organize the Quorum of Twelve Apostles until 1835. When it was organized, Joseph Smith outlined the quorum's responsibilities through revelation. The Twelve were assigned two unique and specific responsibilities: to take the gospel to the nations of the earth and to form a traveling high council for the regulating of the Church outside of its stakes. The first opportunity for the Twelve to fulfill their responsibilities was in May 1835 when …

Behold An Angel Of The Lord Came And Stood Before Me:A Cultural Examination Of Joseph Smith's 1823 Visions Of Moroni, Adam Price Hock
Behold An Angel Of The Lord Came And Stood Before Me:A Cultural Examination Of Joseph Smith's 1823 Visions Of Moroni, Adam Price Hock
Theses and Dissertations
Literary historian Terryl L. Givens referenced the visions of Moroni as "exhibit A" of Mormonism for nineteenth century believers. The 1823 visions constituted one of the core tenets of the religion as an underlying premise of The Book of Mormon. The significance of the visions, however, has not translated into many studies on the 1823 visions. This thesis seeks to fill portions of this gap by evaluating the visions within post-Revolutionary evangelical and treasure seeking culture. I contend that the visions drew upon various elements of the culture, but ultimately diverged from the culture. The introduction recounts the vision from …
Why The School Of Paris Is Not French, Robert Jensen
Why The School Of Paris Is Not French, Robert Jensen
Artl@s Bulletin
“Why the School of Paris is not French” explores the role geography plays in the definition of membership in the School. Noting that the School artists have an overwhelming foreign nationality, the paper asks what conditions were necessary for foreign artists to not only live and exhibit in Paris but to succeed as artists. The conclusions reached through a statistical study are that artists only began to succeed in Paris after 1900. Finally, the paper argues that the ability of foreign nationals to thrive in Paris is related to networks of relationships centered on communal studios.
The Career Path Of The Female Superintendent: Why She Leaves, Kerry Robinson
The Career Path Of The Female Superintendent: Why She Leaves, Kerry Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study used a phenomenological approach to determine the reasons why women leave the superintendency. This study not only illustrated the different ways a woman can leave the position of superintendent but also the reasons she would choose to leave. These reasons can be either positive or negative, but they rarely are the sole cause for why a woman leaves the position. This interview study of 20 female participants who served as superintendent in the Commonwealth of Virginia identified four main themes as to why a woman chose to leave the superintendency. These included: (a) it wasn’t the job …

Matriarchy, The Colonial Situation, And The Women's War Of 1929 In Southeastern Nigeria, Samantha Mallory Kies
Matriarchy, The Colonial Situation, And The Women's War Of 1929 In Southeastern Nigeria, Samantha Mallory Kies
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the Igbo women of Southeastern Nigeria from the eve of colonial intrusion to the imposition of colonialism, the Women’s War of 1929, and its aftermath. By placing the Women’s War into the context of the stripping away of inherent rights guaranteed them by matriarchy following the imposition of patriarchy upon the society, this study provides a new explanation of the women’s involvement and lack of male participation in the war. Under traditional matriarchal umbrellas, through their networks and social groups and by the banding together of all women, the Igbo Women’s War of 1929 was the beginning …
Institutions, The State, And Economic Development: An Analysis And Evaluation Of Ha-Joon Chang's Critique Of The Dominant Discourse And His Thoughts On State-Led Development Theory, Luke M. Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines two distinct schools of thought on how to best spur economic activity in developing economies. Mainstream economists, like Hernando De Soto and Douglass North, argue private property rights and free markets, and the institutions which nourish and protect them, are the primary driver of economic growth. Heterodox economists, led by prominent author and economist Ha-Joon Chang, acknowledge institutions play an important role in inducing economic activity but challenge the notion institutions are the primary driver of development. They argue targeted state-led investment and regulation are as important, if not more important, than protecting market freedom and private …
Code-Ifying Copyright: An Architectural Solution To Digitally Expanding The First Sale Doctrine, Evan Hess
Code-Ifying Copyright: An Architectural Solution To Digitally Expanding The First Sale Doctrine, Evan Hess
Fordham Law Review
As the internet blossomed into ubiquity, piracy mushroomed with it. To control the threat, Congress passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The DMCA created a number of safeguards for copyright holders. But the DMCA purposely ignored whether copyright holders could restrict future transfers of their legally purchased work—a concept known in physical property as the “first sale doctrine.” As a result, copyright holders began using licenses to control future transfers of their digital property.
This was not the first time copyright holders have attempted to gain greater control over their work. The history of copyright law demonstrates a pattern …

Unheard Voices In The Community Building Process: The Role Of Poor Black Women In The U.S. During The Mid-20th Century, Dawn Hinton
Journal of International Women's Studies
This work focuses on the process by which two Black women with little resources and education contributed to the development of community. These women were born in the mid-20th century and their narratives are included in the Black Women Oral History Project. Discovered here is that there was a path to community development that these women followed which involved their desire to help, the recognition and use of churches and other community organizations to implement change in their communities.

Contested Nation: Freedman And The Cherokee Nation, Dave Watt
Contested Nation: Freedman And The Cherokee Nation, Dave Watt
Undergraduate Research - History
The Freedmen are, most simply, those individuals that have been freed from bondage. In the United States this term is often used in reference to legally emancipated slaves and consequently, their descendants. The term “Cherokee Freedmen” refers to those freed slaves who joined with the Cherokee Nation, or, men and women who were formerly held in servitude within the Cherokee Nation. This term has also been given to the descendants of marriages involving freed Africans and Cherokee spouses, thus making the network of people labeled Freedmen an expansive group of people. Totaling roughly 3000 people in the present day, Cherokee …
