An Educational Transition: Post-Secondary Correctional Education - A Qualitative Case Study, Greg Bartholomew
An Educational Transition: Post-Secondary Correctional Education - A Qualitative Case Study, Greg Bartholomew
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Administration of post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) programs within state was vastly changed through legislation enacted in 2009. This study examined the transition of a PSCE system formerly facilitated by higher education to the current system administered by the State Department of Corrections (SDC). This qualitative case study involved multiple perspectives from five different stake-holding groups or five socials units: state legislators, county law enforcement personnel, university personnel, state higher education administrators, SDC personnel, and technical college personnel. A thick, rich description of the transition was obtained by relying on multiple perspectives offered by informants.
The stakeholders’ “display of multiple, refracted …

Communities Of Memory: The Utah History Fair And The Utilization Of History And Memory, Nicholas Andrew Demas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Utah's students, grades 4-12, create projects for the Utah History Fair, Utah's National History Day affiliate program. As far as the rigors of youth academic prowess are concerned, National History Day and the Utah History Fair are amongst the top in the nation. Within the myriad of projects created by Utah's participating students is important information about what aspects of the past captures students' attention and why they choose to research their selected topics. Through a careful examination of student topics from 1981-1984 and 2009-2012, this project taps into what students comprehend about the past. Further inspection into why students …

The Legislative Purposes And Intent Of The Common Levy In Nebraska’S Learning Community, Matthew L. Blomstedt
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this historical study was to establish the purposes and intent of the common levy in Nebraska’s learning community. The development of this unique regional educational structure consisting of eleven school districts in the Omaha, Nebraska metropolitan area is central to the study. The research detailed the context of the decisions made by the Nebraska Legislature to establish and implement the learning community law from 2005 and 2012. Specifically, the study focused on the establishment of a regional tax base, the common levy, as a response to boundary and finance instability that persisted in the Omaha area. The …

Case Histories Of Earthen Dam Failures, R. P. Sharma, Ali Kumar
Case Histories Of Earthen Dam Failures, R. P. Sharma, Ali Kumar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Historical study of dams conceived in earlier times is essential. To continue advancing, the engineering profession must periodically review past problems and the lessons that they taught. Candid sharing of information on failures as well as successes is needed. In fact, some of the most valuable learning has come from projects where errors have been clear in retrospect. In recent years, dam safety has drawn increasing attention from the public. This is because floods resulting from breaching of dams can lead to devastating disasters with tremendous loss of life and property, especially in densely populated areas. Past dam failure disasters …
Improving The Structural Performance Of Heritage Buildings. A Comprehensive Romanian Experience., Ion Vlad
Improving The Structural Performance Of Heritage Buildings. A Comprehensive Romanian Experience., Ion Vlad
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper is devoted to historical masonry buildings’ protection against the destructive influence of earthquakes. Experimental and analytical investigations were performed to verify an original methodology that was developed for improving the structural performance of such a building. The seismic retrofitting of the cultural heritage requires compliance with the severe restrictions of the Romanian legislation related to the preservation of the original artistic and structural features. The intervention on the building started with the understanding of the original idea that was in the mind of the first designer. To accomplish this desideratum, two studies have been performed: a historical study …
Moving Targets: Meanings Of Mobility In Metropolitan Nairobi, Meghan Elizabeth Ference
Moving Targets: Meanings Of Mobility In Metropolitan Nairobi, Meghan Elizabeth Ference
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation is an ethnographic and historical study of the urban transportation system in Nairobi, Kenya and the large youth workforce who operate it. Currently, the informal mini-bus taxi system made up of vehicles called matatus, carries nearly 80% of the urban population in Nairobi on a daily basis. It is, by far, the most popular form of transportation in the country and employs the largest number of young people, as well. This type of transportation is not unique to African countries as mini-bus: 14-32 passengers) and midi-bus: 32-48 passengers) taxis are common in Turkey, Jamaica, Philippines, Russia and Chile …

Reading, Travel, And The Pedagogy Of Growing Up In Late Nineteenth-Century Germany, M. Stanley Majors
Reading, Travel, And The Pedagogy Of Growing Up In Late Nineteenth-Century Germany, M. Stanley Majors
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This project brings together the domestic world of young adult reading with the foreign world of international travel that informed German experience at the end of the nineteenth century. By uniting these two ostensibly disparate realms under one interpretive frame, I offer a new perspective on the theory and practice of young-adult reading at the turn of the last century and the role this reading about travel played in the development of sense of self and sense of place within a national body.
My analysis reads specific youth literature about travel: Brigitte Augusti, Friedrich Pajeken) against depictions of youth reading …

American Romanticism And The Politics Of Literary Originality: The Dark Passages Of Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, And Melville, Peter Brock Olson
American Romanticism And The Politics Of Literary Originality: The Dark Passages Of Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, And Melville, Peter Brock Olson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Critics and commentators have recently reinitiated interest in Romanticism within the sphere of nineteenth-century American literature, and have sought to recuperate Romantic aesthetics to explore the implications of the American renaissance. The scholarship in Romantic theory has given impetus to a New Romanticism that synthesizes philosophy of literature--phenomenology and poststructuralism--with cultural and genre studies. This dissertation studies four canonic mid-nineteenth-century American authors--Emerson, Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville--through the nexus of Romantic negativity and originality, and takes a metacritical approach to a transatlantic critical field juxtaposing American Transcendentalism, British Romanticism, and German Idealism within the sphere of an antebellum cultural matrix composed …

Applying The Multiple Constituents’ Model And Social Justice Variables To Determine The Constituents’ Perception Of The Virginia Putative Father Registry, Tracey Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
A putative father registry represents a legal option for unmarried males who wish to secure legal notice regarding an adoption proceeding for a child they may have fathered. Putative father registries must balance the interests of the putative father against those of the child, the birth mother, and the adoptive parents. This study utilized a framework adapted from the Multiple Constituency Model and used social justice, as indicated by distributive justice and procedural justice, to determine the perceptions among primary constituency groups of the Virginia Putative Father Registry. This research utilized a mixed-methods approach to analyze qualitative data from focus …

Interactive Aphra: Skyping Behn Into Your Classroom, Cheryl Wanko
Interactive Aphra: Skyping Behn Into Your Classroom, Cheryl Wanko
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Beginning by asking how teachers manage the presence of the author in their literature classrooms, this article describes the classroom experiment of interviewing Karen Eterovich, an actor who portrays Aphra Behn, using Skype. It describes the planning and scripting processes, explains the particular interests of this group of students, and assesses the final activity. Questions arose about topics for the interview, appropriate ways for Behn to respond, and the need for a script. The pedagogical opportunities for preparing students as interviewers and of expanding their understanding of performance, historical reenactment, and the construct of the author are discussed. Possible extensions …

Copper’S Corollaries: Trade And Labour Migration In The Copperbelt (1910-1940), Enid Guene
Copper’S Corollaries: Trade And Labour Migration In The Copperbelt (1910-1940), Enid Guene
Zambia Social Science Journal
The geopolitical importance of the mining industry in Zambia and Katanga, and the rural-urban migration patterns that it brought about, has been the subject of many studies. And yet, the extent to which these industries were interdependent is often downplayed or overlooked. Looking more closely at the history of the Zambian and Katangese Copperbelts, one can see that, despite their separateness, there was interplay between them. During the British South Africa Company rule of Rhodesia (1899-1924), Northern Rhodesia was developed as an important labour and food reserve for the Katangese mines. Following the onset of the Great Depression in the …
Wealth, Success, And Personhood: Trajectories Of Labour Migration From Mwinilunga District, 1930s-1970s, Iva Peša
Zambia Social Science Journal
What were the causes and consequences of labour migration from Mwinilunga District between the 1930s and 1970s? Within Zambian historiography, economic and political aspects of labour migration have received much attention. Labour migration has been analysed within dichotomies of rural-urban, development-underdevelopment or tradition-modernity. Instead, this article proposes to bridge such dichotomies and to foreground the socio-cultural dispositions behind labour migration. If mobility is viewed as a social, rather than a geographical practice, connections and long-term continuities come to light. Through the case of Mwinilunga District the causes, motives and effects of labour migration will be examined. Why did individuals decide …
The Lakota Ghost Dance Of 1890, Rani-Henrik Andersson
The Lakota Ghost Dance Of 1890, Rani-Henrik Andersson
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
A broad range of perspectives from Natives and non-Natives makes this book the most complete account and analysis of the Lakota ghost dance ever published. A revitalization movement that swept across Native communities of the West in the late 1880s, the ghost dance took firm hold among the Lakotas, perplexed and alarmed government agents, sparked the intervention of the U.S. Army, and culminated in the massacre of hundreds of Lakota men, women, and children at Wounded Knee in December 1890. Although the Lakota ghost dance has been the subject of much previous historical study, the views of Lakota participants have …
Why The School Of Paris Is Not French, Robert Jensen
Why The School Of Paris Is Not French, Robert Jensen
Art and Visual Studies Faculty Publications
“Why the School of Paris is not French” explores the role geography plays in the definition of membership in the School. Noting that the School artists have an overwhelming foreign nationality, the paper asks what conditions were necessary for foreign artists to not only live and exhibit in Paris but to succeed as artists. The conclusions reached through a statistical study are that artists only began to succeed in Paris after 1900. Finally, the paper argues that the ability of foreign nationals to thrive in Paris is related to networks of relationships centered on communal studios.

Adapting & Appropriating Art From Afar: Negotiating A Global Identity Through Popular Culture, A Study Of Salsa In The Senegalese Context, Elizabeth Bockenfeld
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The following study is essentially an attempt to explore cross-cultural exchange and the resulting (re)creation of different forms of cultural expression. In its broadest sense it aims to explore the quotidian, cultural sides of globalization. It takes for its focus the re-appropriation of salsa music in Dakar, Senegal. Through interviews and participant observation in a number of salsa venues, I explore the various meanings Senegalese salseros put into salsa music and dance. Senegalese salsa is rooted in a very concrete historical background, while also holding meaning for the present. In short, the appropriation of salsa into the Senegalese context serves …

Performing Race, Class And Gender: The Tangled History Of Drag, Bruce Drushel
Performing Race, Class And Gender: The Tangled History Of Drag, Bruce Drushel
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Representations of drag in popular media tend to be cyclical in their frequency, but one constant seems to be their tendency to obscure their complicated past. This is especially true where transgressive gender performance is conflated with issues of race and class. Drag as a cultural practice steeped in critique of the gender binary and its role in reinforcing class-based power structures dates to at least the 16th century, when troops of primarily men in England and France satirically assumed female court personae as a form of protest against taxes and other perceived excesses of the monarchy (Ackroyd). …

Trial By Theory: A Response To Acharya's "Law's Treatment Of Science: From Idealization To Understanding", Gary Edmond, Kent Roach
Dalhousie Law Journal
Adopting a pragmatic and empirically sensitive approach to the use of forensic science and medicine, this essay defends Edmond and Roach's "AContextual Approach to the Admissibility of the State's Forensic Science and Medical Evidence." The authors reiterate their concerns about idealized approaches to science and expertise and question the utility of philosophically-driven and essentialist models of science for legal practice. In detail the essay explains why privileging process over outcomes in the criminal process (andeven perpetuating the dichotomy) is misguided. The authors affirm the importance of factual accuracy and the socio-institutional illegitimacy generated by wrongful convictions. Drawing upon recent inquiries …
