Mays 1941 Movement In Iraq Against Britain And The Honorable Role Of Najaf In It - A Historical Study, Good Morning Winds Al-Fatlawi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Mace’s national liberation movement against the British colonization of Iraq in 1941 was considered an important “pivotal event” in the contemporary history of Iraq. The deterioration of the situation, along with Britain’s determination to land its forces in Basra in preparation for the occupation of Iraq, led to the outbreak of a revolutionary uprising in April 1941 that did not aim to eliminate loyal politicians For Britain, but also for undermining British influence in Iraq. And the escalation of the British colonial interventions in 1941 in the affairs of the nation in Iraq, the weaving of conspiracies and planning against …

Pathology, Identity, Or Both?: Making Meaning From Early Christian Martyrdom, Matthew J. Recla
Pathology, Identity, Or Both?: Making Meaning From Early Christian Martyrdom, Matthew J. Recla
University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2022
Partly in response to an earlier ‘pathological approach’ that seemingly stigmatised early Christian martyrdom, recent scholarship has adopted an ‘identity approach’ that explains martyrdom as a normative discourse of self-construction. This explanation of martyrdom as Christian identity-making, not willing death, is insufficient for three reasons. First, this approach implicitly reaffirms the theological claim that religious identity alone makes martyrs. In doing so it reduces the complexity of the individual martyr to ‘Christian’. Second, this approach excises the existential phenomenon of the martyr from martyrdom. Third, the term ‘identity’ has become ubiquitous, and its use to mark both sameness and difference …
An Analysis Of Success Center Directors’ Perceptions Concerning College Remedial Education Programs, Melvin Steele Jr.
An Analysis Of Success Center Directors’ Perceptions Concerning College Remedial Education Programs, Melvin Steele Jr.
Dissertations
Success Centers are a component of community colleges that prepare students who need additional foundational coursework to proceed to college-level credit classes (Housel, 2020). In this study, the perceptions of Success Center Directors concerning their programs were explored through the lens of adult learning theory as advanced by Knowles and Lindeman (Merriam, 2018) using an online survey. Five research questions were investigated, which dealt with the services provided by Success Centers at community colleges, services that directors wanted to add, the credentials of those working in Success Centers, the impact of Success Centers on their stakeholders, and contingency plans used …
A “Medieval” Myth For A “Modern” Empire Britain Under The Shadow Of Arthur (1461–1612), Julian Gonzalez De Leon Heiblum
A “Medieval” Myth For A “Modern” Empire Britain Under The Shadow Of Arthur (1461–1612), Julian Gonzalez De Leon Heiblum
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation studies the use of the Arthurian myth from the fifteenth through early seventeenth centuries, as a narrative that connected a set of political principles for the unification of Britain and its imperial expansion. Joining other competing political myths in the British archipelago, the political significance of the Arthurian myth has nevertheless been overlooked. On the one hand, the myth informed the transformations of kingship in England and Wales from the crowning of Edward IV to the early years of James’ English reign. It did so specifically within the process of institutionalizing a British crown which was intertwined with …
The Decline Of Natural Law And The Rise Of Exclusive Positivism, Bill Watson
The Decline Of Natural Law And The Rise Of Exclusive Positivism, Bill Watson
SMU Law Review Forum
Stuart Banner’s The Decline of Natural Law: How American Lawyers Once Used Natural Law and Why They Stopped addresses a “fundamental change in American legal thought that took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.” Prior to this change, lawyers routinely relied on natural law in their arguments, and judges took those arguments seriously. Natural law gave judges “a reservoir of principles. . .to draw upon” in cases that positive law could not cleanly resolve, which made it easy to see judges as discovering law in those cases. After the change, however, natural law dropped out of the …

Gay Boy And Playboy Revues: Constructing U.S. Queer Collectivities In Networks Of Peripatetic Burlesque And Nightclub Drag Performers, 1933–1939, Kalle Westerling
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Across the United States, in the mid-1930s, drag made a transition, along with much other entertainment, from vaudeville into night clubs. There, concomitant with developing notions of gender and sexuality, it became increasingly associated with the contemporary expressions of drag that we see today in popular television shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and in gay nightclubs across the country. In short, it became the queer form of entertainment. But in the 1930s, with such developing notions of gender and sexuality, it was not as easy as saying that it was a gay art form. Rather, as heterosexuality and heteronormativity took …

Examining The Influence Of Religious Attitudes, Acceptance Of Change, And Cultural Mistrust On The Utilization Of Therapy For African American Male College Students Utilizing Therapy, Jessica Miranda Shine
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Cultural mistrust and fear of potential racism from people in the medical profession may be contributing to a noted disdain for mental health counseling among African American men. The purpose of this study was designed to gain insight into how attitudes toward religious help-seeking, acceptance of change, cultural mistrust, and mental health stigma impact therapy utilization among African American male college students. The review of literature explored the theoretical frameworks followed by the historical perspective, epigenetics, family structure, masculinity concept and help-seeking behaviors, noting barriers, fear, stigmas, spiritual influence, and economic hardships. Acceptance of change-evolving action is not currently endorsed …

The Shimmering Cathedral: Extraordinary Spiritual Experiences And The Meaning We Make Of Them, Seth Daniel Jones
Doctor of Ministry
This project portfolio presents the formational work for a book about Extraordinary Spiritual Experiences (ESEs). The project seeks to create a spiritual cartography which helps guide clergy, professionals, interested persons, and experiencers as they navigate ESEs and the subsequent process of making meaning from such experiences, particularly in the context of Christian faith, but by no means limited to it. By way of a novel exploration of the structure of an ESE event and stories from scripture, it is hoped that pathways for creating a safe space to share ESEs in group settings will blossom. In the context of the …
Contextualizing Britain’S Holocaust Memorial And Museums: Form, Content, And Politics, Rebecca D. Pollack
Contextualizing Britain’S Holocaust Memorial And Museums: Form, Content, And Politics, Rebecca D. Pollack
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The quantity of Holocaust memorials in Britain and their prominence in public debates beseeches the question: Why does a country with a modest Jewish population, that was neither occupied by the Nazis nor lost its citizens in the horrors of the Holocaust, devote large quantities of resources and time to memorializing the events of the Holocaust? While there are private and synagogue-based Holocaust memorials in Britain, this dissertation centers on Britain’s statefunded Holocaust memorials and museums, a substantial network of memorials that is often left out of the abundant literature on Holocaust memory. Each memorial project is examined through the …

A History Of The Center For The Study Of Women And Society, 1975–2015, Clarisa Gonzalez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the early 1970s, New York City was experiencing an extreme fiscal crisis, with a reported debt of at least $600 million. In CUNY, students were protesting admissions policies that favored the white middle class and hikes in tuition. At the same time, the women’s movement was in the midst of the “second wave,” focusing on women in the workplace and in education. It’s in the midst of these tumultuous times that the first motions to create what was then called the Center for the Study of Women and Sex Roles began in 1975 by Graduate Center faculty Joan Kelly, …

Withholding Injunctions In Copyright Cases: Impacts Of Ebay, Pamela Samuelson
Withholding Injunctions In Copyright Cases: Impacts Of Ebay, Pamela Samuelson
William & Mary Law Review
Before the Supreme Court’s 2006 decision in eBay Inc. v. MercExchange, L.L.C., which ruled that courts should exercise equitable discretion when considering whether to issue permanent injunctions in patent infringement cases, courts routinely granted injunctions in copyright cases when plaintiffs proved that defendants had infringed or had likely infringed copyrights. Such findings triggered presumptions of irreparable harm, which were almost never rebutted. Only rarely would courts consider a balancing of hardships or effects of injunctions on public interests.
In the first several years after eBay, commentators reported that eBay had had little impact on the availability of injunctive …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
A first compilation of georeferenced tick locations in Austria and South Tyrol, Italy, is presented here. This allows the tick fauna to be examined in the various climatic regions of the European Alps. The dataset comprises 424 tick locations of Austria and 48 tick locations of South Tyrol, which were digitized from literature and visualized in the form of geographical maps. The tick fauna of Austria includes two species of Argasidae in the genera Argas and Carios and 15 species of Ixodidae in the genera Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Ixodes, altogether 17 tick species. In addition, two species …
The Importance Of Being Political: How To Understand The Us Supreme Court's Approach To Affirmative Action In Education, Gerald N. Rosenberg
The Importance Of Being Political: How To Understand The Us Supreme Court's Approach To Affirmative Action In Education, Gerald N. Rosenberg
National Law School Journal
This article examines the evolving jurisprudence of the US Supreme Court’s decisions on the constitutionality of affirmative action with specific focus on education. Traversing the Court’s affirmative action decisions from the 1970s to 2013, the author argues that the best, and possibly only, way to understand the evolution of this politically contentious doctrine is to focus on politics. This requires paying attention to political commitments of the justices, the role of interest groups, the voter alignments of the Democratic and Republican parties and white elite and public opinion. The author uses leading social science approaches to present three models of …

“To Die Gallantly”?—The Role Of The Surface Fleet In German Naval Strategy, 1919–41, Peter Hooker
Naval War College Review
While the U-boat dominated Germany’s naval war from 1942 on, its surface fleet played a far more significant strategic role to that point than is appreciated. The construction of that fleet was not the result of myopia but of considered appraisals of the German navy’s performance in the First World War and the development of naval technology during the interwar period.
Rewriting And Retranslation In Fernando Arrabal’S Exiled Cinematic Memory, John D. Sanderson
Rewriting And Retranslation In Fernando Arrabal’S Exiled Cinematic Memory, John D. Sanderson
Living in Languages
The rejection suffered in Spain by Fernando Arrabal’s cinematography, specifically by his films dealing with the Spanish Civil War, Viva la muerte (1971) and L’arbre de Guernica (1975), stands in contrast with the international appraisal received in France or the United States. The Spanish playwright and filmmaker, exiled in France since 1955, confronted with his cinematic memory the established historical master narrative in Spain both during Franco’s dictatorship and the newly born democracy, and experienced accordingly a fierce national critical backlash.
The fact that Arrabal wrote both film scripts in Spanish, based on his previous literary and theatrical work, had …

A Reader In Early Franciscan Theology: The Summa Halensis, Lydia Schumacher, Oleg Bychkov
A Reader In Early Franciscan Theology: The Summa Halensis, Lydia Schumacher, Oleg Bychkov
Philosophy & Theory
A Reader in Early Franciscan Theology presents for the first time in English key passages from the Summa Halensis, one of the first major installments in the summa genre for which scholasticism became famous. This systematic work of philosophy and theology was collaboratively written mostly between 1236 and 1245 by the founding members of the Franciscan school, such as Alexander of Hales and John of La Rochelle, who worked at the recently founded University of Paris.
Modern scholarship has often dismissed this early Franciscan intellectual tradition as unoriginal, merely systematizing the Augustinian tradition in light of the rediscovery of …

Qualitative Research In Nursing: Bibliometric Study, Edna Johana Mondragón Sánchez, Patrícia Neyva Da Costa Pinheiro, .Paulo Henrique Alexandre De Paula, Miguel Henrique Da Silva Dos Santos, Adriana Gomes Nogueira-Ferreira, Jose Enver Ayala Zuluaga
The Qualitative Report
In this study, we explored the production of qualitative nursing research in program repositories evaluated by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel in Brazil, with concepts six and seven. We utilized a bibliometric study in which we considered Brazilian theses and dissertations with qualitative methodology published in 2018 and 2019 with qualitative methodology. In the 100 papers, 79 theses, and 13 dissertations, we identified that the types of studies that stood out were phenomenology, the wording of the objectives predominantly used the verbs “understand,” and “analyze,” and the instruments and techniques used were semi-structured interviews which present …

The Irrevocable Ecumenical Responsibility, Obligation And Commitment Of The Bishop, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The irrevocable commitment, urgent obligation and responsibility of the bishop to foster ecumenism in pastoral ministry today in his diocese in congruence with the Code of Canon Law 755 and the most recent document of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity entitled “The Bishop and Christian Unity: an Ecumenical Vademecum” is of primordial and utmost capital importance in the Catholic Church. This recent document on ecumenism, in congruence with the Second Vatican Council, (1962–65), the 21st ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic Church, which was convocated by Pope John XXIII on January 25, 1959, as a means of spiritual …

History Or Heritage? An Analysis Of Ghana’S Primary School History Curriculum, Charles Adabo Oppong
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Abstract
At a time that history has gained its place in Ghana’s basic school curriculum, considerable differences of opinion arise, not about the subject’s significance in the school curriculum but concerning the legitimacy of the subject title - that is, whether or not the subject should be referenced ‘History of Ghana’ or ‘Heritage of Ghana’. The different opinions reflect Lowenthal’s (1998) observation that history and heritage are separate disciplines. However, the two subjects are often used interchangeably (Mermion, 2012) and “are habitually confused with each other” (Lowenthal 1998, p. x). While expert academics may be at ease with the distinctions …

Global Human Rights Clinic
Our nation incarcerates over 1.2 million people in state and federal prisons, and two out of three of these incarcerated people are also workers. In most instances, the jobs these people in prison have look similar to those of millions of people working on the outside: They work as cooks, dishwashers, janitors, groundskeepers, barbers, painters, or plumbers; in laundries, kitchens, factories, and hospitals. They provide vital public services such as repairing roads, fighting wildfires, or clearing debris after hurricanes. They washed hospital laundry and worked in mortuary services at the height of the pandemic. They manufacture products like office furniture, …
Deflect, Delay, Deny: A Case Study Of Segregation By Law School Faculty, Briana Rosenbaum
Deflect, Delay, Deny: A Case Study Of Segregation By Law School Faculty, Briana Rosenbaum
Scholarly Works
Many histories of school desegregation litigation center on the natural protagonists, such as the lawyers and plaintiffs who fought the status quo. Little attention is paid to the role that individual faculty members played in the perpetuation of segregated legal education. When the antagonists in the historiographies do appear, it is usually as anonymous individuals and groups. Thus, “the Board of Regents” refused to change its policy and “the University” denied a person’s application.
But recently discovered and rarely accessed historic documents provide proof of the direct role that some law school faculty members played in the perpetuation of segregation. …

“Abolition As Presence”: An East Bay Ca Case Study Of Black Food Geographies, Ayize James
Environmental Studies Honors Projects
Using abolitionist methodologies, the author argues that food activism contests “food deserts” by making food present in sources alternative to supermarkets. The project can be broken into two central inquiries: (1) How do race and class formations in the East Bay generate landscapes of food inaccess that are labeled “food deserts”? and (2) How does food activism in the East Bay generate lasting alternatives to supermarkets?, which is explored through three case studies of food justice organizing in the East Bay.
