Demise Of The Pojoy And Bomto, John H. Hann

Florida Historical Quarterly

South-central Florida’s aboriginal inhabitants remain among the least known of Florida’s native peoples during the first Spanish period because Spaniards did not maintain a permanent presence among them. It is likely that a number of the region’s tribes disappeared without even their names having been recorded. That is true particularly of the peoples living in the interior beyond the southernmost missions and those living on or near the Gulf coast between Tampa Bay’s southern shore and the Caloosahatchee River. Some of those peoples began to appear fleetingly in Spanish records during the 1710-1740 period when attacks by Indians allied to …

Samuel Proctor, Editor, Florida Historical Quarterly, 1963-1993: A Tribute, Michael Gannon

Florida Historical Quarterly

In any enumeration of American historians of Florida who have significantly advanced the craft and expanded the field, one would name George Rainsford Fairbanks (1820-1906), our state’s first serious historian in the English language and charter member of the Historical Society of Florida in 1856; Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871), first American scholar to collect and copy documentary materials for the history of Florida from archives in Spain; Woodbury Lowery (1853- 1906), whose two volumes, The Spanish Settlements within the Present Limits of the United States,1 first placed Florida historiography on a professional footing and established standards of research and citation …

British Colonial Strategies To Control The Influenza Epidemic Of 1918 To 1919 In Ashanti, Dennis Baffour Awuah Mar 2022

British Colonial Strategies To Control The Influenza Epidemic Of 1918 To 1919 In Ashanti, Dennis Baffour Awuah

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to examine the strategies and policies that were employed by the British colonial administration to control the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 in Ashanti. I argue that the varying philosophies of both the colonial administration and the Native population in Ashanti on health and medicine influenced the response trajectory to the disease. It also explores the aspects of Indigenous medical practices which are largely concerned with the religion or beliefs of the people. Before the outbreak of influenza, the colonial administration started a campaign to promote Western medicine while antagonizing Indigenous medicine. To an extent, this made the …

Contemporary Turkish Economic Interests In Libya And Their ‎Impact On Its Foreign Policy, Ali Taha Abdullah Mar 2022

Contemporary Turkish Economic Interests In Libya And Their ‎Impact On Its Foreign Policy, Ali Taha Abdullah

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The paper communicates the Turkish economic interests in Libya according to its new strategy, as well as its impact on its foreign policy with the Arab countries. The conduct of interests relies on the descriptive historical method to get the analytical one. The Turkish government has been able to develop its strategy in light of the events in the Middle East region on the basis of the principle of zero crises and resolving them through political dialogue. Due to its policy which has angered many regional countries, especially the Arab countries, which opposed their ambitions and stood against them, after …

Strange Alliance: An American, A Nazi, And The Battle Of The Bulge, James J. Weingartner Mar 2022

Strange Alliance: An American, A Nazi, And The Battle Of The Bulge, James J. Weingartner

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

One of the stranger episodes in the history of World War II occurred over a period of 90 hours in the Belgian village of La Gleize in December 1944. During the bloody Battle of the Bulge, Hal McCown, a major in the U.S. 30th Infantry Division, was captured by troops of the Nazi Waffen SS and taken to La Gleize, where Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Joachim Peiper had established his headquarters. Peiper commanded a battlegroup whose orders were to capture crossings over the Meuse river, thus opening the way to Antwerp, the primary German objective. It was also …

Enhancing Grassland Biodiversity And Its Consequences For Grassland Management And Utilisation, Johannes Isselstein Mar 2022

Enhancing Grassland Biodiversity And Its Consequences For Grassland Management And Utilisation, Johannes Isselstein

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Key points

1. Grasslands make an important contribution to the biodiversity of rural landscapes.

2. Biodiversity has the potential to support the production function of grassland. The conditions for this are largely unexplored.

3. The enhancement of biodiversity on agriculturally improved, species-poor grasslands is difficult to achieve due to seed limitation and high residual soil fertility.

4. Measures to overcome constraints are addition of propagules, depletion of soil nutrients, and the use of specific sward treatments.

5. Agri-environmental schemes will play an increasing role in achieving the biodiversity targets in the future, however, the efficiency of such schemes needs improvement.

Faculty Voices In Faculty-Led Programs Abroad, Tara M. Augspurger

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the experiences and perceptions of faculty members who develop and lead study abroad programs for students enrolled in higher education institutions. Through qualitative case study inquiry, four questions are answered. First this study explores what motivates faculty members to become involved in the development and implementation of short-term study abroad programs. Second, faculty identify what was involved in creating and leading the short-term, faculty-led program including what obstacles they encountered and how they overcame them. Third, these faculty shared their perceptions of what students gained from participating in the program. Finally, this study investigates what institutions …

Political Leadership Among The Natives Of Spanish Florida, John H. Hann Mar 2022

Political Leadership Among The Natives Of Spanish Florida, John H. Hann

Florida Historical Quarterly

When the first Europeans arrived off Florida’s coasts the land was not uninhabited virgin territory but was occupied by many distinct peoples organized into flourishing, complex, chiefdom-level societies of a non-egalitarian nature. Those societies included the Calusa of the Gulf coast from the Charlotte Harbor area southward to the tip of the Florida peninsula; Tocobaga and others who occupied the shores of Tampa Bay and their hinterland; Ais of the Indian River area and its hinterland; various autonomous Timucua-speaking groups of south Georgia and north Florida from the east coast westward to the Aucilla, Withlacoochee, and Oklawaha rivers; Apalachee whose …

Human Behavior In The Political Environment: A Content Analysis Of Political Content In Hbse Textbooks, Brendan Young

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

To address the problem that social workers feel inadequately prepared to engage in the political system, the current study utilizes a content analysis approach to review political participation content in Human Behavior in the Social Environment (HBSE) textbooks. Thus, this study seeks to address the question: How do HBSE textbooks address political components of CSWE EPAS Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice? Initially, literature regarding social work political participation and political practice in social work curriculum as well as an overview of competency-based education is provided. Additionally, a review of the Civic Volunteerism Model, Systems Theory, and Bloom’s Taxonomy is …

The Spanish St. Augustine Community, 1784-1795: A Reevaluation, Sherry Johnson Mar 2022

The Spanish St. Augustine Community, 1784-1795: A Reevaluation, Sherry Johnson

Florida Historical Quarterly

While documentation is available, historians have not accurately defined the community in St. Augustine after the return of Spanish rule in 1784. Community studies abound for towns in Europe and North America, but community study techniques, which have been so successful in reinterpreting North American colonial history, have been underutilized by Latin American historians. Eighteenth-century St. Augustine presents an opportunity to investigate one frontier settlement and the origins of its inhabitants. However, the point of beginning for any such study must be a definition of the structure of the community itself. Research reveals that St. Augustine resembled other Spanish American …

Vigilante Justice And National Reaction: The 1937 Tallahassee Double Lynching, Walter T. Howard Mar 2022

Vigilante Justice And National Reaction: The 1937 Tallahassee Double Lynching, Walter T. Howard

Florida Historical Quarterly

The gruesome southern custom of lynching blacks no longer plagues the state of Florida. Yet, between 1882 and 1945, this species of vigilantism was a persistent problem. In the period 1889 to 1918, peak lynching years in the United States, nearly 200 blacks were executed in Florida. During the decade 1890-1900, seventy-four blacks were victims to lynch-law in Florida, and in the first ten years of the twentieth century, fifty-one met death in the same fashion. Forty-nine blacks were lynched between 1910 and 1917, and thirty-four between 1922 and 1929. Twelve blacks were executed during the decade of the 1930s, …

Minari: The Concealed Asian Aspiration Wrapped In The American Dream, Anh Luan Tran-Nguyen, Arthur Nguyen Mar 2022

Minari: The Concealed Asian Aspiration Wrapped In The American Dream, Anh Luan Tran-Nguyen, Arthur Nguyen

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

After the success of the Korean film Parasite, Minari – a quasi-autobiographical drama of the Korean-American film director Lee Isaac Chung – has again turned the global public’s attention to Korean culture at large. In this review, we shed light on two themes that we capture from the movie: tensions and compromises in chasing the American dream of immigrants. Although stories about pursuing the American dream are abundant, we know less about how that dream causes tensions at the individual and family levels and how the tensions are resolved. Minari is an excellent example to probe the unfolding issues relating …

Evaluation Of A Hands-On Cooking Class And Its Effects On Self-Efficacy In Relation To Healthy Eating In Type 2 Diabetics, Codi A. Jenshak-Gorzinski Mar 2022

Evaluation Of A Hands-On Cooking Class And Its Effects On Self-Efficacy In Relation To Healthy Eating In Type 2 Diabetics, Codi A. Jenshak-Gorzinski

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is alarming and poses a great threat to U.S. national health. Chronic diabetes can lead to serious conditions such as heart attack and stroke, and can result in premature mortality (World Health Organization, 2018). Diabetes can be prevented or treated by eating a healthy diet. Cooking classes are a potential way to improve American’s knowledge of nutritional principles and help them become confident that they have the capacity to eat a healthy diet. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if participation in cooking classes enhanced self-efficacy as it pertains to healthy …

The Communities Being Served Are The Resources That Are Needed: Innovations In Community-Based Justice In Ontario, An Anthology Of Canadian Research, Ab Currie

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

THIS VOLUME deals with one aspect of community-based justice in which community legal clinics take the lead in building collaborative partnerships with community groups to bring greater access to justice to people. This is not the only model of community-based justice. There are large numbers of helping organizations in communities, some staffed by professional service providers and some by capable volunteers, assisting people to resolve problems involving fairness and social justice in everyday life. There may be other ways in which community organizations assisting people may receive help from legal professionals in the form of direct advice or public legal …

Jewish Eschatology And Early Islamic History, Kenneth Atkinson Mar 2022

Jewish Eschatology And Early Islamic History, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

The arrival of the first Muslims in Palestine had profound effects for the country’s Jewish population. The decline of Christian rule, and the appearance of a new religion by a monotheistic prophet from Arabia, initially led to close relations among the country’s Jews and first Muslims. Many Jews sought to explain the ministry of Muhammad (ca. 610- 632 C.E.) through eschatology and viewed his message as a sign that the end of days was near. Muslims, moreover, initially held a similar theological understanding of the eschaton, which may have been influenced by their contacts with Jews. The Islamic reverence for …

Silenced In History: A Historical Study Of Mary Seacole, Bonnie M. Harmer Feb 2022

Silenced In History: A Historical Study Of Mary Seacole, Bonnie M. Harmer

Dissertations

This study sought to uncover the factors that contributed to the historical disappearance of Mary Seacole from the literature from 1900 through to the 1980s. By the late 1990s she was celebrated as a nursing pioneer and the first nurse practitioner. Seacole, a Creole woman from Jamaica with outstanding clinical skills, was refused the opportunity to join the nurses who Nightingale recruited for the Crimean War campaign. Undaunted by the rejection, Seacole paid for her own voyage and established a boarding house and clinic near the front lines. Her courage and positive patient outcomes were recognized by the military officers. …
