Polyploidy Among Plant Species Extraneous In Indiana, Frances I. Scott May 1950

Polyploidy Among Plant Species Extraneous In Indiana, Frances I. Scott

Butler University Botanical Studies

This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining whether there is any relationship between polyploidy and geographic distribution with special reference to species extraneous in a given area. It has been maintained that a more rigorous habitat tends to produce polyploids, that plants which are on the limits of their geographic distribution in a given area should exhibit a high degree of polyploidy since they are on one of the extremes of their habitat range. Since polyploids (particularly tetraploids) usually exhibit a greater vigor and adaptability than do diploids, it has seemed a natural deduction that diploid species might …

Legal Writing On Statutory Construction, Paul H. Sanders, John W. Wade Apr 1950

Legal Writing On Statutory Construction, Paul H. Sanders, John W. Wade

Vanderbilt Law Review

This review does not purport to provide a complete critique of the various works in the field of Statutory Construction. It is not directed primarily to the specialist. Instead, it is intended to bring together for the benefit of the general practitioner the various books and other writings on the subject and thus amounts essentially to a bibliography. But an effort has been made to suggest the approach of the longer works and to estimate in some measure their value. Thus this symposium on the subject of Statutory Construction can be rounded out by providing convenient reference to other writings …

A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson Jan 1950

A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many events of the gold rush have been adequately narrated in numerous books and articles. The succeeding pages in this thesis will recall, historically by topic, important incidents of one phase of that period never before treated as a separate study that phase is the theatre of the Mother Lode region.

The argonauts of the Mother Lode wanted to be entertained and could pay for it. Many preferred the saloon and gamboling hall, but the theatre did not languish because of this, and in fact, developed in some instances directly out of the saloons and fandango halls.

It was the …

Luther's Endorsement Of The "Confessio Bohemica.", Jaroslav Pelikan Jr. Nov 1949

Luther's Endorsement Of The "Confessio Bohemica.", Jaroslav Pelikan Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

As a result of the research that has been carried on in the past half century on the theology of the Reformation. we are now in an advantageous position for a historical and theological evaluation of the faith of the Reformers. What began as purely historical investigation has become instead a recovery of Reformation insights that had been lost in the intervening centuries. For this reason contemporary theological scholarship has been compelled to buttress its systematic presentations with historical material and to make its historical study relevant by drawing theological conclusions from it.

William D. Moore (1824-96), Amateur Geologist Of Mississippi, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

It is now nearly ninety years since William D. Moore, then professor of English at the University of Mississippi, collaborated with Eugene W. Hilgard on his famous geological report of that State. The archivists and historians have lost Moore from their records (if, indeed, they ever sought seriously for information of him), so that what was written five years ago of W. D. Moore (in another connection) remains as true as it was then: "No record of whence he came, or whither went (when the University closed in 1861), is to be found at the University." Since the present writer …

Correlation Of Elongation In White And Red Pine With Rainfall, Jerry Anne Motley

Butler University Botanical Studies

Research in height growth has been carried on in the east by Kienholz, Cook and Baldwin; in th emiddle west by Rees and Friesner; and in Montana by Kirkwood.

Kienholz showed from his observations on red oak, white ash, red maple, gray birch, white or paper birch, yellow birch, tulip poplar, large-toothed aspen, trembling or quaking aspen, red pine, and European larch that these species fall into two groups according to seasonal length growth.
