The Forest Primeval Of Indiana As Recorded In The Original U.S. Land Surveys And An Evaluation Of Previous Interpretations Of Indiana Vegatation, John E. Potzger, Margaret Esther Potzger, Jack Mccormick

Butler University Botanical Studies

Between 1799 and 1846, the territory which now comprises the State of Indiana was divided by the United States public land survey into six-mile-square townships as a prerequisite for the equitable distribution of public lands. Each township, in turn, was subdivided into 36 sections one-mile square. Section and quarter-section corners, as well as a number of intermediate points, were marked by blazing trees. The location, name, and diameter of more than 214,500 "witness trees," composed of more than 80 species and generic groups, were recorded in the Indiana surveyors' journals. These journals and the maps compiled from them, records inscribed …

A Study Of The Historic Theories Of The Atonement, William F. Bromley

Graduate Thesis Collection

In one of his letters to the church at Corinth, the apostle Paul sets forth as one of the basic facts of the primitive Gospel that "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. "l In the same passage, he asserts that it is by this Gospel that men are saved - that is that there is a definite relationship between the death of Christ and the salvation of men. To define this relationship has been a task that has occupied the thinking of some of the greatest minds of the ages since the day that Jesus of Nazareth …

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg Aug 1955

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

Archaeology is, furthermore, of great value because it relates exegesis to historical facts. Christianity is a historical religion, based upon events and experiences which transpired in history. Allegorical and symbolical interpretations often ignore the historical background of the Christian religion and lead to aberrations in religious thought. While the New Testament as a supernatural revelation harbors many elements transcending historical verification, it does nevertheless contain much material which can be determined by historical study. Thus Dana asserts: "There is no feature of the process of interpretation more important than the reconstruction of the historical situation out of which a given …

The Historical Development Of The World Council Of Churches With Special Reference To American Lutheran Participation, Ralph Underwager Jun 1955

The Historical Development Of The World Council Of Churches With Special Reference To American Lutheran Participation, Ralph Underwager

Bachelor of Divinity

This is a quest into the historical development of the World Council of Churches as an expression of the faith, life, and witness of the churches of our time. The historical perspective includes the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a whole, but particular emphasis will fall on the years since 1910, the date of the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. Major movements, the men that guided them, and significant historical realities, with special attention given to the extent of American Lutheran participation, will form the major part of this inquiry.

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty Jun 1955

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty

Concordia Theological Monthly

"In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," sighed Luther, in reference to current doctrinal misunderstanding. "In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," might be a contemporary comment on neglect of the worship of, and witness to, the Holy Spirit. It has become almost a rubric to bemoan this neglect on Whitsunday, the third great feast of the church year, but this complaint is often followed by a tendency to contribute to the neglect and the ignominy through silence from the pulpit, as far as a living concern for the work of the Holy Spirit is concerned, …

That The Scriptures Might Be Fullfilled, Roy Schroeder Jun 1955

That The Scriptures Might Be Fullfilled, Roy Schroeder

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this thesis we want to study the concept of .fulfilment as found in the New Testament. John Marsh points out the importance of this concept when he says: “To an age which has inherited the new and refined instruments of historical study which were developed in the nineteenth century., it has become very difficult to give any intellectual, as distinct from devotional or religious, context to the concept of ‘fulfilment’ as the Bible understands it.

A Critical Study Of The Methods Of Higher Criticism, Robert F. Day May 1955

A Critical Study Of The Methods Of Higher Criticism, Robert F. Day

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Beginning with the eighteenth century and continuing to the present certain Biblical scholars segmented the Pentateuch into various documents as to its origin. They claimed the methods of inquiry and principles, by which they determined. the different sources used to write the Pentateuch, were valid. This work was known as Biblical Higher Critic ism, otherwise known as just, Higher Criticism. Conservative Biblical scholarship has thoroughly disagreed with the findings of Destructive Higher Critic ism but little has been written on the methods or principles of inquiry end their application. Most conservative attacks have been at the results rather than investigation …
