Berlin Historians And German Politics, Charles E. Mcclelland Jan 1973

Berlin Historians And German Politics, Charles E. Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

By the dawn of the twentieth century, German historians, like "the German academic community as a whole, had fallen into the role of a vaguely conservative and decidedly official establishment." The last third of the nineteenth century had seen the triumph of Prussia over the academic world as well as the political communities of the German lands, with the cultural policy and impulses of Berlin deeply influencing the direction of German historiography and political thought. This influence took the form of an accommodation of power and idealism rather than a purge of the universities, which were the undisputed home of …

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise Jan 1973

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The essential problem of politics are ancient general, and persistent. A particular political system, such as that of the United States, can be interpreted as a way of coping with recurring problems. Some of the ways a political system deals with problems may be unique, some commonplace. Because it meets its problems in a particular time and place with a special body of past experiences to go on, each political system is unique; so too the American system is unique. But because some problems have recurred ever since civilized men have tried to live together, every political system has had …

Francis Wayland Parker : An Historical Study Of The Influences On His Philosophy Of Education As It Relates To Language Arts, Gregory S. Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Francis Wayland Parker was one of the earliest American educators of national prominence to advocate what has come to be known today as progressive education. He was in total support of the common school concept, helped from the earliest, formal child study association in America, promoted the institution of kindergartens, and stressed the need for a child-centered, correlated curriculum organized around the natural and physical sciences. Through his work in the Quincy, Massachusetts, public schools and at the Cook County (Chicago) Normal School, Parker also made strong contributions to early language arts/reading instruction and methodology. Despite his influences on his …

Abortion After Roe And Doe: A Proposed Statute, Mark B. Anderson, H. Michael Bennett, Andrew D. Coleman, Peter Weiss, Richard K. Wray (Chairman)

Vanderbilt Law Review

On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade' that the Texas criminal abortion statute, which proscribed all abortions except "for the purpose of saving the life of the mother,' 'violated the constitutional right of privacy. Justice Blackmun, delivering the opinion of the Court, declared that the concepts of personal liberty and restrictions on state action provided by the fourteenth amendment supported a right of privacy "broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy."' In a companion case, Doe v. Bolton,' the Court noted several impermissible procedural as well …

“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher Nov 1972

“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is painful for me to write what I am about to write-about the log in the eye of my own church. I am not blind to some of the specks or even logs which concern many of my brothers. Every confusion and diffusion and diminution of the Gospel deeply disturbs me. But our first concern has to be the log in the eye of those among us who assume they are qualified to do eye surgery on their brothers. The Lord's judgment has a strange way of beginning at Jerusalem.
