An Historical Look At Honors Student Characteristics In Higher Education, Daniel E. Key Jan 1984

An Historical Look At Honors Student Characteristics In Higher Education, Daniel E. Key

Graduate Research Papers

Having the opportunity to listen in on several Honors Committee Meetings at the University of Northern Iowa proved to be very thought provoking. The UNI Honors Committee had been discussing plans for a new honors program design when a question was asked, one that proved to be very important and needs serious consideration. "What type of student are we looking for?" What seemed to be a simple question with a simple answer gave rise to further questions and an issue which is the heart of any honors program. What characteristics will potential honors students possess? How will they be selected? …

The Early Sixth-Century Frescoes At S. Martino Ai Monti In Rome, Judson J. Emerick, Caecilia Davis-Weyer

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

This work presents an architectural and art-historical study of the buildings of the monastery and church of S. Martino ai Monti in Rome, the use of which dates from the Carolingian period in the Middle Ages. The authors defend the theories of art historian Richard Krautheimer, who posited that the ancient architectural remnants found in the basement below the basilica date from the sixth century and were used by Christians of that period. The authors defend these claims with a study of the frescoes and wall paintings found there.

Four Leagues Of Pecos: A Legal History Of The Pecos Grant, 1800 - 1933, G. Emlen Hall Jan 1984

Four Leagues Of Pecos: A Legal History Of The Pecos Grant, 1800 - 1933, G. Emlen Hall

Faculty Book Display Case

Land grant disputes from the nineteenth century have divided and embittered some people for most of the twentieth century. In an attempt to bring final resolution to lingering controversies in New Mexico and throughout the West, in 2000 the U.S. Congress pledged to review disputed claims in the next few years.

The Pecos Grant is illustrative of legal and administrative wrangling over land grants. To ensure that a U.S. Senate Committee understood the complexity of the Pecos Grant, New Mexico lawyer and historian Ralph Emerson Twitchell told them in 1923: "There are so many things in connection with this entire …

Irrigation played a very important role in the development of the Yakima Valley as we know it today. The Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District was chosen to show how an irrigation system functions and the part it plays on the lives of the plants, animals and people in its area. A brief historical study of the Tieton Division of the Yakima Project was made. The construction of the Tieton Unit was studied. A slide lecture with an accompanying tape was developed to acquaint junior high school students with the purpose, function and affects of the Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District.

Love And Rebellion: Louisiana Women Novelists, 1865-1919 (Wetmore)., Susan Millar Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of minor Louisiana women novelists from the end of the Civil War to the passage of women's suffrage. A large number of Louisiana women were spurred to write novels by the war and Reconstruction, motivated by both financial considerations and the need to explain their lives. They use conventional forms, like the plantation romance, but the stories they tell suggest that women were ambivalent about Southern traditions and the old order. In breaking down the social codes which both protected and repressed Louisiana women, the Civil War and the Reconstruction led Louisiana women novelists to …

Attitudes Of Classroom Teachers Toward Mainstreaming Hearing-Impaired Pupils., Richard Arlin Johnson Jan 1984

Attitudes Of Classroom Teachers Toward Mainstreaming Hearing-Impaired Pupils., Richard Arlin Johnson

Dissertations (Pre-2016)

The purpose of this study was to assess teacher attitudes toward the concept of mainstreaming hearing-impaired pupils into traditional classrooms. Specifically, the study was designed to determine whether teacher attitudes toward mainstreaming hearing-impaired pupils are influenced by the variables of sex, ethnicity, religious preference, and age. To provide definition and clarity to the study, 20 basic hypotheses were formulated. The hypotheses were designed to assess attitudinal levels relating to awareness of teacher preparation, pupil's behavior, personal adjustment, teaching implementation, and building facilities. Using the stratified random sample technique, the researcher surveyed 126 classroom teachers (106 females, 20 males) assigned to …

Chemistry Of Phosphate Esters : Stereochemical Evidence For A Dissociative Mechanism, Mohammed Hashmat Ali Jan 1984

Chemistry Of Phosphate Esters : Stereochemical Evidence For A Dissociative Mechanism, Mohammed Hashmat Ali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many attempts have been made to elucidate the various mechanism by which phosphates act in biological and other systems. There are many suggestions regarding mechanisms all of which fit into one of two broad categories. 1. Associative. 2. Dissociative. Of these two, interest to the associative type displacement has been of most investigators and this pathway has been established with certainty. On the other hand, less work has been done and there has been much controversy surrounding the dissociative mechanism. The dissociative mechanism is believed to be important because it has been thought that it represents the actual biological processes …

Curriculum Theorizing/Curriculum Modelling And The Roman Catholic School System: Development Of A Theoretical Model For Curriculum Development And/Or Curriculum Improvement, James Charles Machinski Jan 1984

Curriculum Theorizing/Curriculum Modelling And The Roman Catholic School System: Development Of A Theoretical Model For Curriculum Development And/Or Curriculum Improvement, James Charles Machinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Curriculum projects generally take place within a particular school system or district with the express purpose of meeting the needs of the students, community, and schools within that system. The Roman Catholic school system employs methods similar to those used in the public school system insofar as a curriculum theory/model may be adapted to meet its needs; It was the allusions to known curriculum theories/models which did not address the needs of the Roman Catholic school system in dealing with the process of curriculum development/improvement, the lack of comprehensive curriculum theories/models dealing exclusively with the Roman Catholic school system, and …

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis Jan 1984

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis

Dissertations

Problem

There is no written history of West Indies College (WIC). What little is cited in periodicals, magazines, Palm Leaves, and other sources about this institution is insignificant, incomplete, and sometimes incorrect. For over half a century, WIC has been preparing workers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Until 1984, however, no comprehensive history was written on the development of this important institution of higher learning.

Method

The documentary-historical method was employed in this research. Books, periodicals, school bulletins, unpublished manuscripts, board minutes, school reports and agendas, school calendars, private files, correspondence, and other relevant documents as well as oral interviews …
