Benson Lossing: His Life And Work, 1830-1860, Diane M. Casey

The Courier

Benson J. Lossing's interest in reaching a popular rather than an elite audience, his journalistic style, and the changing methods of historical research, which began to develop at the end of the nineteenth century, have all led to the current opinion of him-that he was a popularizer of history, and not a historian. However, an examination of his long and varied career suggests that his work deserves consideration in the study of antebellum American life.

Western Women And True Womanhood Culture And Symbol In History And Literature, June O. Underwood Apr 1985

Western Women And True Womanhood Culture And Symbol In History And Literature, June O. Underwood

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

History cannot happen," says Henry Nash Smith, "that is, men cannot engage in purposive group behavior without images which simultaneously express collective desires and impose coherence." Although Smith does not mention it, women too engaged in purposive group behavior. They too had images that organized their experiences and gave impetus to action. And since women were part of the great western migration, the images that made sense to them and engaged them in action within the westering experience were formative in their history.1

This article will look at nineteenth-century western women and the symbols that formed their particular history …

A Comparative Study Of Alcoholic And Nonalcoholic Women's Perception Of Their Relationship With Their Father, Judith A. Hinga Apr 1985

A Comparative Study Of Alcoholic And Nonalcoholic Women's Perception Of Their Relationship With Their Father, Judith A. Hinga

Dissertations

The literature review outlined the historical perspectives impacting current thinking about the role fathers play in child development. Theories of child development saw the mother as the important parent and all but ignored the father. Later researchers studied the father-daughter relationship and found that the paternal relationship is also an important factor in a female's personality development.

Theories of female alcoholism reviewed in this study indicate that there is a relationship between sex-role conflict and female alcoholism. Existing data show that the family of origin of female alcoholics is characterized by a cold, rejecting mother and a warm, accepting father. …

The Major Studies On Vincent De Paul, Carey J. Leonard C.M. Apr 1985

The Major Studies On Vincent De Paul, Carey J. Leonard C.M.

Vincentian Studies

The real Vincent de Paul, versus the legendary one, was not known for several centuries because his communities restricted his writings to themselves. This article categorizes and critiques the major works on him. It begins with the four institutional biographies from before the twentieth century by Louis Abelly, Pierre Collet, Michel-Ulysse Maynard, and Louis-Victor-Emile Bougaud. Twentieth century works are then evaluated, starting with those of Pierre Coste. Historical studies of the Church and spirituality during and after Vincent’s time place him in social, political, and ecclesial context. Other efforts examine how his works and spirituality may be applied to contemporary …

A Widening Horizon Catholic Sisterhoods On The Northern Plains, 1874-1910, Susan C. Peterson Apr 1985

A Widening Horizon Catholic Sisterhoods On The Northern Plains, 1874-1910, Susan C. Peterson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Catholic sisterhoods have been part of American life since the colonial period, first as operators of charitable institutions to aid the needy and then, in the nineteenth century, as teachers of both immigrant children in the East and Indian children at mission schools on reservations in the West. Conventional historical studies have either slighted or ignored their contributions to the settlement of the northern plains, and recent articles on Catholic missions in history journals do little better. In both secular and church histories, Catholic sisters are traditionally pictured as silent representatives of female purity or as extensions of the church …

Having A Purpose In Life Western Women Teachers In The Twentieth Century, Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson Apr 1985

Having A Purpose In Life Western Women Teachers In The Twentieth Century, Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Beginning late in the eighteenth century, social theorists developed an ideology of domesticity, maintaining that women's proper role lay in the care of children, the nurture of the husband, the physical maintenance of the domicile, and the guardianship of both home and social morality.1 Although this ideology helped to propel females into teaching, historians have not agreed on the impact of domestic ideology on women teachers and on the education profession itself. Some scholars conclude that women's easy access to teaching posts turned the classroom into a workshop for motherhood for the average female, perpetuating anti-intellectualism in education to …

The Anchor: 1985

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Suicide: A Constitutional Right?, Thomas J. Marzen, Mary K. O'Dowd, Daniel Crone, Thomas J. Balch

Duquesne Law Review

Recent advocacy of a right to suicide raises the question of whether statutes which penalize the assistance of suicide and the widespread practice of intervention to stop suicide attempts are unconstitutional. This article considers the claim that the right of privacy or substantive due process encompasses autonomy to do whatever affects no one else, and concludes that the Supreme Court has recognized only those forms of autonomy that it has deemed to be rooted in the traditions and history of our society. After outlining the attitudes toward suicide at various stages in Western Civilization, focusing on Anglo- American history and …

History And Legal Discourse: The Language Of The New Legal History [Essay], Samuel J. Astorino Jan 1985

History And Legal Discourse: The Language Of The New Legal History [Essay], Samuel J. Astorino

Duquesne Law Review

While the New Legal History has succeeded in establishing itself as an indispensable perspective in the specific study of the evolution of American law, its findings have not yet been incorporated into the mainstream of general American history. One of the chief reasons for this failure is the employment of technical legal language by lawyer-historians in their historical analyses of the common law and the corresponding inability of non-lawyer historians to understand such language. To this extent, general American history remains incomplete in its portrayal of the past, particularly in the area of industrialization.

Reflections On Ethical Elements Of Judaic Halakhah, Phillip Sigal Jan 1985

Reflections On Ethical Elements Of Judaic Halakhah, Phillip Sigal

Duquesne Law Review

Halakhah, or the body of Jewish norms of conduct and religious practices, consists of an everchanging aggregate of ethical principles. Halakhah is thus unlike most "legal" systems, which are characterized by the presence of a governmental authority reinforced by a justice system established to impose penalties. This article highlights the nature of halakhah as distinct from such traditional legal systems. Following this introduction, the author focuses on hermeneutics, the rules of religious textual interpretation, and their application to halakhic revision. The author then applies the hermeneutic to illustrate halakhic development in the areas of abortion and self-incrimination, and, in addition, …

Rites And Passage In Leonardo Bruni's Dialogues To Pier Paolo Vergerio, Olga Zorzi Pugliese Jan 1985

Rites And Passage In Leonardo Bruni's Dialogues To Pier Paolo Vergerio, Olga Zorzi Pugliese

Quidditas

The Dialogues to Pier Paolo Vergerio are a fairly brief, rather unassuming, yet much defamed work by Leonardo Bruni (c. 1370-1444), the Italian humanist from Arezzo who lived most of his life in Florence, the hub of early Renaissance civilization. Composed of two parts, the second of which is, apparently, a retraction of the first, and dating probably from a the years 1401 and 1405-06, respectively, the Dialogues constitute, because of the contradictions contained in them, a puzzling text that has elicited a variety of interpretations from critics in the historical as well as the literary fields. Although much research …
