The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 1985-11-08, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1981-1990

Anthropologist Sherry B. Ortner and author Richard G. Barnet will speak in the Limits and Constraints symposium. Dr. Robert Smith will discuss Wooster's excavations at Pella in Jordan. Letters to the editor contest the claims that the fine arts on campus are supported to the detriment of the communication department and the lack of specific action by the Board of Trustees to prevent College investments from supporting the South African government in Apartheid.

French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Oct 1985

French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

The recent controversy in France over the new history textbooks based on the reforms promulgated under René Haby in the middle 1970s can serve as a reminder of the many uses such textbooks can have in our civilization classes. In the past ten years the Haby programs have become the symbol for what many observers in France take to be a serious weakening of the teaching of history since the late 1960s. At the primary level, history was joined to geography and the sciences as an activité d'éveil; no longer was it the privileged instrument for fostering national identity as …

Vcu Today (1985-10-02)

VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Contract And Commercial Law Scholarship In Common Law Canada, Leon E. Trakman Oct 1985

Contract And Commercial Law Scholarship In Common Law Canada, Leon E. Trakman

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Professor Trakman characterizes contract and commercial law scholarship in Canada as a young discipline, which has so far focused on descriptive analysis rather than prescriptive synthesis. As the area matures, preoccupations will move naturally to include prescription as well as description, scholars will come to recognize the integration of contract and commercial law with outside values; and the scholarship will accept its potential role in necessary substantive and procedural law reform.

The Theoretical And Policy Challenges In Canadian Compensation Law, John Mclaren Oct 1985

The Theoretical And Policy Challenges In Canadian Compensation Law, John Mclaren

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article examines the traditional torts-based focus of scholarship in Canadian compensation law, notes the growth of theoretical and interdisciplinary speculation in recent years, and considers both the potential for and character of more extended research of the latter types in the future. Comparisons are made with recent trends in compensation law in both England and the United States.

Corporate Law In Legal Theory And Legal Scholarship: From Classicism To Feminism, Kathleen A. Lahey, Sarah W. Salter Oct 1985

Corporate Law In Legal Theory And Legal Scholarship: From Classicism To Feminism, Kathleen A. Lahey, Sarah W. Salter

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Corporate law scholarship is dominated by traditional (masculist) forms of inquiry that ignore the sources and consequences of corporatism and effectively support the business corporation as a situs of male domination. Professors Lahey and Salter suggest that a challenge to the dominant perspective must come from groups, such as women, that have been socially marginalized and have not therefore fully internalized the terms of the discourse of bureaucratic capitalism. Only when female legal scholars actively study and promote feminist values such as participation, decentralization, and power sharing will a serious challenge to the patriarchal mentality of the business world be …

Legal Scholarship And Legal Education, Graham Parker Oct 1985

Legal Scholarship And Legal Education, Graham Parker

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Legal scholarship must be related to legal education, so that teaching does not reflect only one aspect of legal training, whether it be black-letter law, clinical training, or feeble attempts to graft on bits of other disciplines. Instead, students must be exposed to a true synthesis of law and other disciplines and areas of learning. This will require a serious reconsideration of teaching methods, preparation of teaching materials, and ways of testing law students. Academic law should not be merely reflexive. Some attempt must be made, if possible, to avoid the intellectual lag of the law. It may be necessary …

A Comparison Of Stress Levels And Body Weight In School-Age Children, Melissa Kent Aug 1985

A Comparison Of Stress Levels And Body Weight In School-Age Children, Melissa Kent

MSN Research Projects

This descriptive study was designed to compare stress levels in school-age children according to weight category. The researcher hypothesized that when third-grade students’ scores on the Kent Stress Measurement Tool for children were compared according to weight category (underweight, appropriate weight, overweight), there would be no signifi cant difference. Sixty-four third-grade public school students participated in the study. Height and weight measurements were done, plotted on a growth percentile graph, and a weight category assigned. A researcher-designed question naire, the Kent Stress Management Tool for Children, was administered to the students. The one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the scores. …

The Wiedergeburt In The Religion Of The Zoarites, Elizabeth Siber White Aug 1985

The Wiedergeburt In The Religion Of The Zoarites, Elizabeth Siber White

Masters Theses

In 1817 a little-known group of German Separatists fled religious persecution in Wurttemberg and took up residence in America. Eventually known as the Zoarites, they founded a religious commune in the northeastern Ohio wilderness in 1819, which they called Zoar, and continued to live the common life there until 1898, at which time they voted to disband.

What sort of religious beliefs led them to endure persecution in Germany and then to establish a religious commune in Ohio? This study was undertaken in part to answer just such questions. Relying primarily on the unpublished, largely untranslated discourses of J. M. …

Part II outlines some of the areas where more and different work needs to be done, concluding with some general thoughts on how the development of such directions in scholarship might be …

The Next Step: Definition, Generalization, And Theory In American Family Law, Carl E. Schneider Jun 1985

The Next Step: Definition, Generalization, And Theory In American Family Law, Carl E. Schneider

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The Journal of Law Reform's Symposium on Family Law comes opportunely, in legal scholarship's spring of hope, its winter of despair, at a time when we have everything before us, when we have nothing before us. As is natural in such an epoch, reflection about legal scholarship, about its history, purposes, and methods, has flourished. This Symposium invites us to extend that reflection to family law, and this essay attempts, tentatively and speculatively, to accept the invitation.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this work has been to provide a working biography on the life of James Grey Willie for the field of history, and also to provide a useful and meaningful volume for the James Willie descendants. The work covers James' life from its beginnings in England in 1814, to his death in Mendon, Utah, in 1895. It covers the surviving traces that exist on his life, with the notable accomplishments of Pastor in the Mormon mission field in England (1853-1856), and Bishop of the Salt Lake City Seventh Ward between 1856 and 1859, with major emphasis on his …
