This study uses the Maxillofacial Injury Severity Score (MFISS) – a system used by surgeons to assess traumatic head injuries on a 0 – 4 scale– to evaluate postmortem imaging. By applying the MFISS to postmortem cases, this research aims to reverse engineer trauma manifestation to explain initial ballistic injury in head gunshot (GSWH) victims to be translated into current clinical practice, particularly reconstructive surgery and preventative care. This study hypothesizes that applying the MFISS to postmortem head gunshot imaging will provide valuable data for …

Targeting Nmdar Signaling In Retinopathy Of Prematurity: A Novel Antibody-Based Strategy, Sanjana Chekuri Jun 2025

Targeting Nmdar Signaling In Retinopathy Of Prematurity: A Novel Antibody-Based Strategy, Sanjana Chekuri

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of vision loss in premature infants, caused by high-oxygen therapy exposure postnatally for lung development. During this period, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression is suppressed, inhibiting normal blood vessel growth. When premature infants transition back to a normal-oxygen environment, the metabolic demands of the retina exceed oxygen availability, inducing a state of relative hypoxia. This hypoxia triggers the upregulation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), which in turn drives the overexpression of VEGF and erythropoietin (EPO), leading to pathological neovascularization. N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor (NMDAR) is a highly expressed excitatory receptor in the brain …

All-American Crime: Reflections On Welcome The Wretched By César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, Kit Johnson Jun 2025

All-American Crime: Reflections On Welcome The Wretched By César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, Kit Johnson

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

In his 2024 book, Welcome the Wretched, Professor César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández questions why it is that non-citizens who have committed crimes are slated for removal from this country. After all, he notes, “Migrants don’t bring crime here. It’s already here. It always has been and always will be.”

We may not readily admit it, but crime in the United States is truly All-American. Section I of this Essay tries to shed light on the widespread nature of criminality in the United States by recounting my own crimes and those of family and friends, with the goal of pushing the …

Between The Sword And A Hard Place: Systemic Solutions To The Shortcomings Of The Missouri Public Defender System, Andrew A. Bohon Jun 2025

Between The Sword And A Hard Place: Systemic Solutions To The Shortcomings Of The Missouri Public Defender System, Andrew A. Bohon

Missouri Law Review

“Striving to better, oft we mar what’s well.” The attempt to solve a problem can sometimes topple a functional system entirely. The striving to improve a thing can frustrate its purpose. Limping along under the guise of functionality, however, many sociopolitical processes hinder our progress. Something works, so we cling to it in fear of making it worse. The idea has been aphorized that perfect is the enemy of good. Although a quaint and conservative philosophy, there is a countertheory: “Good is the enemy of great.”

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Low Impact Image Analysis To Traditional Vegetation Sampling In A Branford Marsh, Peter T. Porrello Jun 2025

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Low Impact Image Analysis To Traditional Vegetation Sampling In A Branford Marsh, Peter T. Porrello

Master's Theses

The growing need for non-intrusive research methods has led to a surge in passive data collection, such as audio recorders, data loggers, and camera traps, in the ecological field. This improves the capacity to observe fragile habitats without causing any harm and gives researchers new perspectives on the natural world. A non-invasive cable camera system is suggested as a means of gathering data to lessen these ecological disruptions. By taking images of the salt marsh's surface, this technique will minimize plant destruction and lower CO2 emissions brought on by foot traffic through the marsh, whilst producing data that is on …

Educational Change Through Bureaucratic Effectiveness: The Role Of Mid-Level Networks, Jose Eos R. Trinidad Jun 2025

Educational Change Through Bureaucratic Effectiveness: The Role Of Mid-Level Networks, Jose Eos R. Trinidad

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

Studies of networks for educational change often focus on webs of teachers, school leaders, policymakers, and philanthropists, with little attention to staff at the middle level, who arguably have immense potential to effect change. This article explores an initiative for educational change through mid-level staff using the case of a nonprofit that places its members in large, public education bureaucracies in a developing country. I explore a mechanism for how the strategic patchwork of staff can support change through improved bureaucracy. First, staff are intentionally placed, reputationally distinct, and purposely connected. Second, these individuals influence bureaucratic effectiveness through coordinated policies, …

A Right To Repress: Ipec V Inslee And The Parental Right To Determine The Gender Of A Child, August Brown Jun 2025

A Right To Repress: Ipec V Inslee And The Parental Right To Determine The Gender Of A Child, August Brown

Washington Law Review

Do parents have a constitutional right to determine their child’s gender? No court has held that they do, but that assumption was the basis of a challenge brought in August 2023 to Senate Bill 5599 (ESSB 5599)—an amendment to the Washington State Family Reconciliation Act, which protects runaway youth seeking gender-affirming treatment and reproductive health care services from immediate parental notification. Plaintiffs International Partners for Ethical Care (IPEC) and others challenged the bill before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Their claims turn on parental rights, as well as several associated federal and state constitutional claims. …

Unlocking Platform Data For Research, Niva Elkin-Koren, Maayan Perel, Ohad Somech

Indiana Law Journal

Digital platforms, which control unique access points to the rich data stored on their servers, have become a “living lab” of real-time information. Scientists and researchers increasingly use platform data for various purposes, such as training machine learning (ML) systems and Natural Language Processing (NLP) models, and for studying diverse fields such as medicine, humanities, and social sciences, including the influence of digital platforms on society. However, researchers increasingly encounter significant barriers when attempting to access platform data. Although platforms typically lack proprietary rights over the data itself, they exert strong control over its use by imposing digital locks and …
