Anemia: An Uncommon Cause Of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis, Iqra Athar, Afrah Malik, Neelma Naz Khattak, Tashfain Shifa, Zukhruf Zayian

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a multifactorial illness seen more commonly in females as compared to males. Its diagnosis is often delayed due to variable clinical presentations. It is now identified more often due to advancements in neuroimaging modalities. We present an uncommon case of CVST caused by anemia in a 23-year-old female. Our patient presented with complaints of headache since the past two days and left sided hemiplegia since past one day. Later on during her hospital stay she developed generalized tonic clonic seizures. MRI and MRV brain with contrast revealed right cerebral venous (vein of Trolard) thrombosis. …

Role Of Rituximab In Autoimmune Encephalitis: A Report Of Two Cases, Salman Farooq, Shafaq Saleem, Muhammad Bilal Tariq

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is a form of autoimmune encephalitis that predominantly affects young individuals and often presents with neuropsychiatric symptoms. It is frequently misdiagnosed as a primary psychiatric disorder due to its initial presentation. Although first-line immunotherapy typically includes corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), or plasmapheresis, a subset of patients shows limited response and requires escalation to second-line agents such as Rituximab. We report two adult male patients, aged 35 and 41 years, who initially presented with behavioral disturbances, confusion, memory deficits, and speech abnormalities. Both were initially misdiagnosed with psychiatric illnesses, delaying appropriate treatment. Diagnostic workups including MRI, EEG, …

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors, such as abemaciclib, are approved for hormone receptor–positive (HR+) breast cancer, where they inhibit tumor cell cycle progression. While their antiproliferative effects are established, less is known about how they may reflect molecular changes and using cfDNA as a biomarker of treatment response. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of abemaciclib on breast cancer cell proliferation in vitro and characterize cfDNA released during treatment using next-generation sequencing. Abemaciclib treatment significantly reduced cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. cfDNA release correlated with treatment intensity, and sequencing revealed upregulation of a gene in p21 …

The Rise Of Big Data And The Law Of Armed Conflict, Laura A. Dickinson Jun 2025

The Rise Of Big Data And The Law Of Armed Conflict, Laura A. Dickinson

Chicago Journal of International Law

Big data—extremely large quantities of information and the analytics used to process it—is now crucial to the way militaries operate on the battlefield. Data is used to run weapons systems, analyze intelligence, procure and deploy personnel, evaluate battlefield conditions, detain prisoners, and more. And not only is data increasingly being used on the battlefield, but operations targeting adversaries’ data—to acquire it, delete and destroy it, or distort or poison it—are becoming increasingly important as well. Beyond the battlefield, big data lies at the epicenter of adversarial activities below the armed conflict threshold. Because data is the fuel of artificial intelligence …

Two Terribles: A Day Without Space And Ai Enabled Synthetic Biological Weapons A Warning Order, James E. Baker

Chicago Journal of International Law

A day without space, a term used to describe the loss or destruction of America’s space assets, and the potential generation of novel biological threats using AI and synthetic biology present catastrophic and potentially existential threats to U.S. security in a way that nuclear weapons did before and continue to do so today. Yet they have not received the level of attention from national security lawyers or commentators they warrant. This article describes the threats. It describes the current and inchoate nature of the law to address these threats. And it makes initial recommendations to policymakers and lawyers about how …

Whose Truth Commission, Lehlohonolo January Jun 2025

Whose Truth Commission, Lehlohonolo January

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

It is often said that the victor always dictates the narrative and thus dictates how history is represented. The end of Apartheid in South Africa wasn’t a result of an outright victorious defeat of the Apartheid State together with its institutions of coercion but rather came about as a result of a culmination of a series of events. If this adage holds true, then why is it that the narrative seems to paint a picture of a victor’s perspective? This assertion is not made lightly but is no less reflective of how the facts seem to portray themselves in that …

A Design Based, Mixed Method Study On Evaluating Traditional Grading Practices And The Implications For Mastery Learning And Educational Equity In A Midwestern School District, Christina Kirchner

Dissertations

“Grades are an essential currency of our schools. Schools, colleges and employers use grades to determine many important, and in some cases, life-altering decisions-college admission, financial aid and scholarships, athletic eligibility, promotion, retention, awards, and supports” (Feldman, 2018, p. 3). Grading is not addressed in teacher preparation programs, or within professional development during teachers’ careers; teachers have chosen their own way to grade guided by their own personal experiences, uninformed of research or best practice. Using a human centric, design-based approach, the researcher identified multiple discrepancies with grading practices among the K-12 school organization. Within the discrepancies, other issues were …

Conduct-As-Status In Skrmetti's Gender-Affirming Care Bans, Robert Blake Watson, Neha Srinivasan Jun 2025

Conduct-As-Status In Skrmetti's Gender-Affirming Care Bans, Robert Blake Watson, Neha Srinivasan

Denver Law Review

With its decision in United States v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court has permitted government prohibitions on gender-affirming care for certain transgender individuals. Although these bans construe themselves as barring medical procedures in neutral, conduct-based terms, we contend that the laws discriminate on the basis of transgender status and sex. Drawing from equal protection jurisprudence—including decisions in Lawrence v. Texas, United States v. Windsor, and Obergefell v. Hodges—we contextualize the gender-affirming care bans within the Court’s history of rejecting efforts to mask status-based discrimination through ostensibly neutral restrictions on conduct. By underscoring that both cisgender and transgender individuals seek gender-affirming interventions, …

The Straw That Broke The Camel’S Back: How Expanding The Statute Of Limitations For Pre-Enforcement Challenges Filed Under The Apa Could Upset The Administrative System, Paige K. Harris

Missouri Law Review

Everyone has bad days. But certain days are the worst. The days where everything seems to go wrong. You set the alarm for 6:00 p.m., not 6:00 a.m. You didn’t set the coffee pot, and the café’s line was too long, so you walk into work with a severe lack of caffeine. Your project manager asks you a question you know you answered last week. That annoying co-worker talks over you in a meeting, the chips get stuck in a vending machine, and your rush hour commute takes forty-five minutes longer than expected. Finally, something happens that makes you snap. …

Removing “Black Marks”: How States Can Preserve Wrongful Birth Suits Without Reliance On “Eugenic” Rhetoric, Paul J. Wuennenberg

Missouri Law Review

“[L]ebensunwertes Leben—Life Unworthy of Life.” Those words, used by the National Socialist (Nazi) Party in Germany to describe people with genetic disorders, ring throughout world history as a moral indictment of the Nazi German state and all those who collaborated with it. Unfortunately, Germany was not alone in its designation of some people as unworthy of life; the United States has also, throughout its history, given the same designation to portions of its population. From Japanese-Americans during the Second World War to people with disabilities in the era of eugenics, the American government has frequently singled out those whom it …

To address these challenges, this project utilizes a Husky UGV equipped with a 2D LiDAR sensor, an RGB-D camera, an IMU, an OpenManipulator-X robot arm, and a soft …

Studies On The Effects Of Cap Management On The Oxidation–Reduction Potential, Phenolic Composition, And Sensory Properties Of Red Wines, Dallas J. Parnigoni Jun 2025

Studies On The Effects Of Cap Management On The Oxidation–Reduction Potential, Phenolic Composition, And Sensory Properties Of Red Wines, Dallas J. Parnigoni

Master's Theses

Cap management during alcoholic fermentation of red wines plays a critical role in modulating the phenolic and volatile extraction from grape solids, influencing the homogenization of chemical and temperature gradients, while imparting oxygen to the must. Different cap management alternatives are also thought to influence the evolution of the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). It is critical to understand how different cap management protocols affect these variables to design a cap management protocol tailored to wine style and varietal. This thesis investigated the effects common commercially applied cap management protocols, as well as the efficacy of novel, automated gas mixing protocols as …
