Bioengineering Senior Theses

The objective of our project is to create, design and test a fully functional continuously monitoring hydrogen peroxide sensor. This sensor aims to identify early detection of diseases associated with oxidative stress which can include certain types of cancer, neurodivergent diseases and cardiovascular diseases. Early detection of hydrogen peroxide levels can provide patients with early treatment and can help reduce disease progression. Overall, the biosensor prioritizes early detection of ROS levels allowing various consumers such as healthcare sectors, patients, and research institutions to benefit from continuous monitoring for health management and disease prevention.

Educational Efficacy Of Private Well-Testing Workshops And The Surveillance Of Private Drinking Water Quality In Connecticut, Alec Janis, Michael Dietz, Meredith Metcalf Jun 2025

Educational Efficacy Of Private Well-Testing Workshops And The Surveillance Of Private Drinking Water Quality In Connecticut, Alec Janis, Michael Dietz, Meredith Metcalf

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

More than 820,000 Connecticut residents rely on groundwater from private wells, yet minimal regulations address well water quality. Extension programs across the United States have begun to provide private drinking water education and testing assistance to address this public health gap. Few studies have analyzed the efficacy of these programs.

We delivered four workshops across Connecticut, from November 2022 to November 2023, where participants were given an educational presentation on private drinking water and an opportunity to test their well-water quality at a subsidized cost. After participating in the workshops, participants believed they were more confident to begin annual testing, …

White Paper: Addressing Nature Access Inequities Through School-Based Interventions In Early Childhood Education, Steph Dean Jun 2025

White Paper: Addressing Nature Access Inequities Through School-Based Interventions In Early Childhood Education, Steph Dean

Publications

Access to nature is a powerful determinant of young children’s physical, mental, and cognitive development. Yet systemic barriers, particularly those related to geography, race, and socioeconomic status, prevent many young learners from engaging meaningfully with the natural world. Urban, rural, and low-income communities face distinct but compounding challenges in accessing quality green spaces. In light of these disparities, early childhood settings such as preschools, Head Start programs, and childcare centers, play a pivotal role in offering equitable nature access during the school day. This white paper makes the case for nature-based experiences in early learning environments as a vital solution …

Transitioning The Cal Poly Quarter Horse Enterprise Curriculum: From Quarters To Semesters, Jacquelyn R. Huebner Jun 2025

Transitioning The Cal Poly Quarter Horse Enterprise Curriculum: From Quarters To Semesters, Jacquelyn R. Huebner

Agricultural Education: Graduate Internship Reports

The Cal Poly Quarter Horse Enterprise began in 1978, when student riders brought Cal Poly-bred horses to futurity events to sell them. In 1996, Gene Armstrong brought the sale to Cal Poly, and ever since, the annual performance horse auction has broken records as one of the highest grossing collegiate horse sales in the nation. This sale not only provides funding for the care of over one hundred horses housed at the Equine Center for educational use, but also provides an opportunity for students to gain experience in starting and training young horses, as well as putting on a dynamic …

Dairy-To-Go: An Informal And Formal Education Model On Milking Dairy Cattle, Elizabeth Ann Marie Kostalnick Jun 2025

Dairy-To-Go: An Informal And Formal Education Model On Milking Dairy Cattle, Elizabeth Ann Marie Kostalnick

Agricultural Education: Graduate Internship Reports

Within California, 360 schools have FFA programs; however, there are still over 2,000 high schools within the state. This equates to only 18% of California high schools having access to FFA. That number may be greater than 10%, however, access to agricultural curriculum is still limited. Considering US crop production is concentrated predominantly in California and the Midwest (USDA-ERS 2017), high schools in California, regardless of location and proximity to a farm, should have access to an agricultural curriculum. The purpose of this project was to create a curriculum where middle school and high school educators can show the process …

The Objective Observer: The Washington State Supreme Court's Remedial Aspirations And Experience On The Ground, David B. Owens

Washington Law Review

The Washington State Supreme Court has adopted an “objective observer rule” for addressing whether race impacted jury selection and extended this rule to evaluating all aspects of Washington courts, including jury trials. The objective observer rule allows courts to evaluate whether decisions in those courtrooms could be viewed as the result of racial bias, even where there is no evidence of specific racial animus and in the absence of racial slurs. The rule, which covers a form of disparate impact, has now existed for over half a decade. This Article outlines the Washington State Supreme Court’s development of the objective …

The Gift Of Public Funds Bogeyman, Noah Purcell, Michelle Saperstein Jun 2025

The Gift Of Public Funds Bogeyman, Noah Purcell, Michelle Saperstein

Washington Law Review

Washington’s “gift of public funds” doctrine is frequently misunderstood in ways that impede innovative ideas aimed at remedying some of our state’s most intractable problems. This doctrine arises from article VIII, sections 5 and 7 of the Washington Constitution, which prohibit state and local governments from gifting assets or loaning credit. While the Washington State Supreme Court historically applied these provisions in restrictive and confusing ways, the Court’s modern jurisprudence recognizes that the doctrine is inapplicable to funding expended for any of the many “fundamental purposes” of government. Even where a government program does not fall under this broad category, …

Attempting To Resolve The Felon-In-Possession Prohibition Circuit Split: The Second Amendment Historical Analogue Test After United States V. Rahimi, Chloe E. Bonds Jun 2025

Attempting To Resolve The Felon-In-Possession Prohibition Circuit Split: The Second Amendment Historical Analogue Test After United States V. Rahimi, Chloe E. Bonds

Mercer Law Review

The Second Amendment provides, “[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The inception of this amendment was rooted in the Founding Fathers’ Enlightenment ideals and disapproval of the English Crown’s “standing armies.” In founding-era America, the militias were not composed of professional soldiers but instead of local citizens with the aim of providing common defense. The main concern surrounding the ratification was that the Second Amendment would give too much power to the federal government and result in the same …

Looking For The Public In Public Law, Nikhil Menezes, David E. Pozen Jun 2025

Looking For The Public In Public Law, Nikhil Menezes, David E. Pozen

University of Chicago Law Review

The “public” is everywhere and nowhere in contemporary public law. Everywhere, in that the term is constantly invoked to justify and explain existing arrangements. Nowhere, in that serious attempts to identify a relevant public and elicit its input are few and far between. Scholars and officials depict the U.S. public as playing myriad roles in governance—checking, guiding, approving, repudiating—without offering an account of how public preferences are formed or how they exercise influence on questions of interest.

This Article seeks to identify and call attention to the foundational dilemmas underlying this disconnect, to clarify their normative contours and intellectual history, …

Stomach Content And Stable Isotope Analysis Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Volitans) In The Florida Keys, Emily E. Shallow, Cassandra N. Glaspie, Michael J. Polito, Mitchell S. Lovell Jun 2025

Stomach Content And Stable Isotope Analysis Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Volitans) In The Florida Keys, Emily E. Shallow, Cassandra N. Glaspie, Michael J. Polito, Mitchell S. Lovell

Faculty Publications

The invasive red lionfish, Pterois volitans, plays a unique role in seagrass and reef ecosystems, where it functions as a top predator and competitor for both food and shelter. Given the ubiquitous distribution of lionfish in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean basins, their species provides an excellent opportunity to understand how an invasive predator's diet and primary energy pathways change as a function of size and habitat type. To investigate these patterns, we studied lionfish from a mosaic of deep reef, shallow patch reef, and seagrass bed habitats in the Florida Keys using stomach contents and stable isotope analysis …

Enhancing The Sport Spectatorship Market For Hearing-Impaired Audiences: Accessibility And Engagement Strategies, Niveditha Karthikeyan Jun 2025

Enhancing The Sport Spectatorship Market For Hearing-Impaired Audiences: Accessibility And Engagement Strategies, Niveditha Karthikeyan

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This paper examines the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to the in-person sport spectatorship experience of hearing-impaired individuals. The delivery of the core sport product, especially at the stadium, is not equally accessible to individuals with disabilities, particularly for audience with hearing impairments. While the ADA mandates accessibility in public accommodations, its implementation for communication access within sport venues remains inconsistent. Through a focused review of legal frameworks, venue practices, and emerging technologies, the paper identifies gaps in current accessibility efforts and outlines practical recommendations to enhance inclusivity. Key strategies include the use of AI-powered real-time captioning, …

Promotions And Themes: An Empirical Analysis Of Attendance Factors In The National Women's Soccer League, Lena Gunn, Alexander Traugutt

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has experienced significant growth, making it crucial to understand attendance drivers at matches. This study evaluated the impact of themed events and promotions on attendance during the 2023 NWSL season. Using data from all regular-season home matches (N = 167), an OLS regression analyzed how various factors influenced attendance measured as a percentage of stadium capacity. Results revealed that themed events significantly increased attendance, while traditional promotions showed a positive but non-significant effect. External factors including post-World Cup timing, visiting team marquee players, and market demographics also significantly influenced attendance. These findings provide actionable …

Promoting Well-Being Among Intercollegiate Student-Athletes: The Impact Of Collegiate Sport Business Practices, Laura Kruger

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this experimental study was to identify if the implementation of an educational gratitude workshop could increase intercollegiate student-athletes’ self-reported perceptions of well-being and reduce stress, considering sport administrators must address rising mental health concerns among athletes. Participants of various sport teams were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group to assess differences among self-reported measures of state gratitude, psychological distress, life satisfaction, athlete burnout, and perceived available support in sport. Statistical significance was found in the data analysis which demonstrated that the workshop was meaningful, and it significantly influenced the experimental group’s perceived available support in …

Anemia: An Uncommon Cause Of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis, Iqra Athar, Afrah Malik, Neelma Naz Khattak, Tashfain Shifa, Zukhruf Zayian

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a multifactorial illness seen more commonly in females as compared to males. Its diagnosis is often delayed due to variable clinical presentations. It is now identified more often due to advancements in neuroimaging modalities. We present an uncommon case of CVST caused by anemia in a 23-year-old female. Our patient presented with complaints of headache since the past two days and left sided hemiplegia since past one day. Later on during her hospital stay she developed generalized tonic clonic seizures. MRI and MRV brain with contrast revealed right cerebral venous (vein of Trolard) thrombosis. …
