Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Pearson syndrome (PS) is a rare multisystem mitochondrial disorder characterized by single large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions (SLSMDs). It typically presents in infancy with refractory sideroblastic anemia, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and failure to thrive. Due to its heterogeneous manifestations and resemblance to other hematological conditions, early diagnosis remains a clinical challenge.

CASE PRESENTATION: A south asian male infant presented with persistent pancytopenia, severe anemia unresponsive to intravenous and oral iron and multivitamin supplements, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, failure to thrive, and metabolic acidosis. Born to consanguineous parents, the child had a significant family history of early infant deaths and hematological abnormalities. …

Nebraska And The Midwest Agtech Ecosystem: Benchmarking Innovation Investment And Translation Gaps, Ankit Chandra, Ishani Lal, Brennan Costello

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Agricultural innovation is central to the sustainable transformation of food systems, yet the capital that finances it is unevenly distributed relative to where food is produced. This paper develops a diagnostic framework for measuring this mismatch and applies it across the U.S. Midwest from 2021 to 2025, with particular emphasis on Nebraska's structural position within this landscape. Drawing on venture capital deal-flow data, 17 stakeholder interviews, and a novel strength-weakness-opportunity-gap (SWOG) ecosystem mapping methodology, we document $736 million in tracked Midwest AgTech funding across eight states (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota). We introduce three …

Reconciling Faith And Academic Identity: Evangelical Christian Identity And Ontological Confusion In Sport Studies, Sean Burke

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies

This paper investigates the interplay of ontological confusion and Evangelical Christian identity within the context of qualitative sport studies research. Employing a reflexive autoethnographic method, I explore my personal experiences as an Evangelical Christian and as a social scientist who grapples with the complexities of paradigmatic confusion. Personal vignettes highlight the influence of sporting spaces and figures such as Tim Tebow and Kurt Warner in shaping my faith, identity, and framework for understanding reality. The analysis delves into the challenges posed by competing paradigmatic orientations, including positivism and social constructivism. These paradigms reveal the inherent difficulty of aligning scholarly inquiry …

Female Athletes With Differences Of Sex Development (Dsd): A Christian Perspective On Fairness And Compassion, Angela M. Robles

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies

One of the most significant controversies in elite women’s sport relates to the participation of female athletes with differences of sex development (DSD), as demonstrated by recent Olympic debates surrounding athletes like Imane Khelif and Caster Semenya. Today, a complex challenge continues to evolve at the intersection of DSD and competitive sports, and it requires careful consideration. The central argument of this paper is that DSD athletes are worthy of compassionate treatment grounded in their inherent dignity, and is founded on the understanding of what it means for humans to be created in the image of God (imago Dei). The …

Employing the See–Judge–Act methodology, it draws from Spe Salvi, Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae, and the Vatican document Giving the Best of Yourself, in dialogue with C. R. Snyder’s psychological theory …

Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan Jul 2026

Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan

Michigan Journal of International Law

As the climate crisis intensifies, advocates worldwide have stood up to defend their communities, territories, and environment. In response, they have faced violent retaliation. This repression persists despite evolving international, regional, and national-level legal frameworks around the “right to defend rights” and the “right to protection.” This article begins by providing a comprehensive overview of this evolving legal landscape. Against this backdrop, the article examines the tactics and architectures of violence used to repress land and environmental defenders through the lens of counterinsurgency theory.

The article proposes a typology of counterinsurgent violence including: surveillance; stigmatization; criminalization; arbitrary detention; infiltration; cooptation; …

Institutionalizing The Trade-Labor Nexus, Yueming Yan Jul 2026

Institutionalizing The Trade-Labor Nexus, Yueming Yan

Michigan Journal of International Law

While scholars have extensively explored the evolution of labor provisions in trade agreements, less attention has been paid to the institutional mechanisms that operationalize these provisions. This article addresses this gap by offering a comparative analysis of labor compliance models that are emerging across jurisdictions.

Recognizing that no institutional design is without trade-offs, this article applies the theory of comparative institutional analysis to evaluate existing models—not by asking whether they are (in)effective in the abstract, but: (in)effective compared to what? Specifically, it examines the strengths and limitations of various institutional mechanisms using benchmarks that matter to policymakers, including procedural efficiency, …

Active Limited Partners Flunk Functional Test, Karen Burke Jul 2026

Active Limited Partners Flunk Functional Test, Karen Burke

UF Law Faculty Publications

In 1977, Congress enacted section 1402(a)(13), which exempts limited partners "as such" from self-employment tax on their share of partnership income. A half century later, active investment management professionals have claimed limited partner status to avoid self-employment tax on investment management fees, seemingly standing this anti-abuse rule on its head. While the Treasury twice issued proposed regulations to clarify and modernize the definition of a limited partner, these attempts encountered a firestorm of protest. The Tax Court's controversial Soroban decision rejected claims that state-law limited partners are automatically exempt from self-employment tax, holding that a functional analysis is required to …

Developing And Sustaining Indigenous Nursing Leadership: The Heal Southwest Leadership Cohort, Cristina Rivera Carpenter, Adriann Begay Jul 2026

Developing And Sustaining Indigenous Nursing Leadership: The Heal Southwest Leadership Cohort, Cristina Rivera Carpenter, Adriann Begay

Indigenous Health Posters and Presentations

While Indigenous Peoples represent 2.9% of the total United States (US) population (Office of Minority Health, 2025), only 0.4% of the 4.7 million Registered Nurses (RN) in the US are Indigenous (AACN, 2024). This disparity in nursing representation impacts healthcare delivery and access in Indigenous communities. Healthcare services in Indigenous communities, such as those provided through Indian Health Services (IHS) and 638 facilities, often face high vacancies and high turnover rates (Kruse 2022). There are gaps in mentorship, professional development, community of practice, and available curriculum to practicing Indigenous Nurses who serve their communities. These gaps must be addressed to …

This study explores the roles of shame in the experiences of ex-Christians that led to their deconversion. The study’s results have implications for understanding the experiences of religious trauma, considering that chronic shame has been linked to the development of trauma. Respondents, recruited via Reddit, answered survey questions about the ways in which they perceived shame to influence their religious experiences, personal experiences, and religious deconversion. Inductive thematic analysis was utilized to derive themes …

Man, Cut The Crop: Effects Of Cropectomies On Survival And Behavior In Drosophila Melanogaster, Emily Peraza Jul 2026

Man, Cut The Crop: Effects Of Cropectomies On Survival And Behavior In Drosophila Melanogaster, Emily Peraza

Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal

The gut-brain axis mediates communication between the digestive and nervous systems to regulate physiology and behavior. Its dysfunction profoundly impacts human health and causes disease. Region-specific hormones and neurotransmitters in the digestive system respond to several processes to signal the brain, but the mechanisms of gut-brain signaling are not fully defined. Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful model for studying gut biology by showing remarkable similarity to mammalian digestive systems, as both regulate energy by distributing nutrients. We refined a minimally invasive surgical protocol to remove the crop from adult flies. We then utilized the Activity Recording CAFE (ARC) and Drosophila …

Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow Jul 2026

Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Collaboration between medical and behavioral health providers has been growing consistently through the years. Offering behavioral health services in a medical setting helps individuals who may not otherwise seek mental health care. Much of the available literature focuses on patient characteristics in referral patterns; however, current evidence does not provide much guidance for medical providers to improve their collaboration with behavioral health providers. The present study assessed referral patterns of medical providers serving patients with different presenting problems and with patients who have received prior prescriptions of psychotropic medications. Medical providers were randomly assigned to view four 1-min videos of …

Extending The Fundamental Theorem Of Biomedical Informatics For The Ai Era, Philip R O Payne, Jonathan H Chen, Christopher A Longhurst

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Charles Friedman's Fundamental Theorem of Biomedical Informatics holds that a person working in partnership with an information resource outperforms that same person unassisted. Since its publication, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), adaptive learning systems, and large-scale data infrastructures have transformed the biomedical ecosystem, extending informatics beyond clinical care into domains such as public health, consumer health, translational science, and the broader life sciences. Such expansion has further underscored the importance of the Fundamental Theorem while also elucidating ways it can be expanded to meet current needs.

OBJECTIVE: To reassess and extend the Fundamental Theorem for the AI era in …

Preemption Of State Fraudulent Transfer Law By The Bankruptcy Code, David G. Carlson Jul 2026

Preemption Of State Fraudulent Transfer Law By The Bankruptcy Code, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article argues that state law tort claims based on fraudulent transfers are preempted by the Bankruptcy Code. It contends that allowing such tort claims to persist interferes with a bankruptcy trustee's ability to achieve universal settlements and recover assets, as the trustee cannot guarantee immunity from third-party tort liabilities.

The study took place in a Year 6/7 classroom in the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. All students identified as EAL/D learners. As an experienced, yet non-Indigenous practitioner, I documented the perceived tensions I encountered in the discipline of English. Adopting an Action Research methodology, I explored the classroom struggles as I navigated the mandate of teaching explicitly, yet responsively. I used student dialogue sessions and a reflective journal to document my tensions. Results showed, despite being able …

The Interwoven Dynamics Of Climate, Fire, Resilience And Orangutan Survival In Central Kalimantan’S Peat Swamp Forest, Putu Pujiantari Jul 2026

The Interwoven Dynamics Of Climate, Fire, Resilience And Orangutan Survival In Central Kalimantan’S Peat Swamp Forest, Putu Pujiantari

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tropical peat swamp forests are globally significant carbon reservoirs and biodiversity strongholds, yet they face escalating threats from climate change, fire, and anthropogenic disturbances. This dissertation investigates the interwoven dynamics of climate, fire, forest resilience, and orangutan survival in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, a region which was transformed by the failed Mega Rice Project and recurrent catastrophic wildfires for decades. Using a multi-scale approach that integrates remote sensing time-series analysis (2001–2024),nlandscape-scale disturbance mapping (2005–2025), and fine-scale movement ecology, this research tests three core hypotheses: (1) moisture availability is the dominant climatic driver of wildfire activity, operating through non-linear thresholds; (2) post-fire …

A Language Model’S Capability To Make Reasoned Decisions In Administrative Law, Robert Diab Jul 2026

A Language Model’S Capability To Make Reasoned Decisions In Administrative Law, Robert Diab

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper calls into question a common set of assumptions about the use of artificial intelligence in administrative law in Canada. While some assume that AI (AI) may be useful for assisting a decision-maker where core rights are affected, the prevailing view is that it cannot be relied upon to make final decisions, due mainly to functional limitations: AI cannot give reasons and its outcomes are fraught with bias and opacity that cannot be overcome. The prevailing view, however, took shape in response to earlier, more limited forms of AI. Large language models can be used in a way that …
