Evaluating The Lasting Impacts Of A Dialogue-To-Change Program On Racial Understanding Using Ripple Effect Mapping, Mary Emery, Anuradha Choudhary, Mike D. Stout, Grace Langford, Eric Walcott, Marcia Ostrom
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
This paper explores the impacts of Coming Together for Racial Understanding (Coming Together), using Ripple Effect Mapping (REM). REM is a participatory evaluation tool that captures and analyzes intended and unintended outcomes. This method maps how individual change leads to wider changes in interactions and activities, from personal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels to the widest ripple of the potential for change in policy, structure, and accepted practice. We adapted REM for virtual settings using Google Jamboard to hold two REM sessions with 20 participants and used mapping results to populate a follow-up survey for 2018 and 2019 training participants. …
Culturally Responsive Evaluation In Extension Programs For Indigenous Youth, Sara M. Tomis, J.C. Bunch, Amy Harder, T. Grady Roberts
Culturally Responsive Evaluation In Extension Programs For Indigenous Youth, Sara M. Tomis, J.C. Bunch, Amy Harder, T. Grady Roberts
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Indigenous communities, deserving and in need of salient Extension services, experience disparity in programming and culturally responsive evaluation because of historic and current social and financial barriers. An exploration of culturally responsive evaluation practices in Extension programs serving Indigenous youth audiences is warranted to identify areas for improvement. A focus group of Extension professionals was conducted to investigate evaluation practice within a federally funded Extension program. Findings indicated that Extension professionals were committed to operating and evaluating in ways that respected Indigenous culture, but improvements in culturally responsive practice are needed among both university and federal partners.
Lasting Memories: Effects Of Previous Healthcare Experiences On Young Adults’ Pain Tolerance, Emily Goldstein Sigman, Sherwood Burns-Nader
Lasting Memories: Effects Of Previous Healthcare Experiences On Young Adults’ Pain Tolerance, Emily Goldstein Sigman, Sherwood Burns-Nader
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
This cross-sectional study investigated the connections between previous healthcare experiences, young adults’ pain tolerance, and healthcare fear and anxiety. Prior healthcare experiences, current fear of medical procedures, and pain tolerance were reported by 257 young adults via a survey. Structural equation modeling revealed that increased numbers of previous healthcare experiences were associated with higher pain tolerance and decreased fear and anxiety towards healthcare procedures in young adulthood. Conversely, individuals with fewer previous healthcare experiences exhibited lower pain tolerance and heightened fear and anxiety towards medical procedures as young adults. These findings suggest that the relationship between previous healthcare experiences and …
Trauma-Informed And Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices To Support Multilingual Learners In K-12 Classrooms, Emily Johnson
Trauma-Informed And Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices To Support Multilingual Learners In K-12 Classrooms, Emily Johnson
Graduate Teacher Education
This Capstone paper examined how trauma-informed (TI) and culturally responsive (CR) belonging of multilingual learners (MLs) in K-12 classrooms. This study evaluated the intersection of TI education and CR teaching as a framework to support MLs. With MLs representing approximately 10% of the U.S. student population (NCES, 2024), schools faced an urgent need to address the academic, linguistic, and social-emotional challenges due to adverse childhood experiences, migration-related stress, displacement, and cultural adjustment. The literature review included qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and intervention-based studies examining MLs, refugee-background students, teacher perceptions, professional development, school-based interventions, and CR instructional practices. This paper explored how …
Automated Scoring Of Prosody In Oral Reading Fluency: Integrating Acoustic And Sentence/Chunk-Level Silence Features With Machine Learning, Kuo Wang
Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations
Prosody, the ability to read with appropriate variation in pitch, duration, pausing, and stress, is an important (and challenging to measure) dimension of oral reading fluency (ORF) and comprehension. ORF prosody is currently measured through human raters and rubric-based scoring systems (e.g., the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) or the Multidimensional Fluency Scale (MDFS scales). The rating process is labor and resource-intensive and introduces rater bias. Recent work has shown acoustic features to predict prosody ratings; however, their models had low generalization performance on cross-domain data (unseen passages and student samples).
The present study investigated the automated assessment of …

Exploring Immune Priming In The Species Exaiptasia Diaphana, Torrence Campos
Biology Theses
Vibrio coralliilyticus is a pathogen that infects various coral species across several reef ecosystems and causes mortality within a span of a few days. With increasing temperatures, the pathogen becomes more virulent towards coral. Probiotics such as MCH1-7 have previously been used to treat infected corals before and after exposure to V. coralliilyticus. In this study, we will be using a species of sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana in place of coral to evaluate the effects of two V. coralliilyticus strains ATCC BAA-450 and OFT6-21. It was determined that BAA-450 was more virulent. It led to immediate stress and higher mortality. …

BACKGROUND: Pearson syndrome (PS) is a rare multisystem mitochondrial disorder characterized by single large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions (SLSMDs). It typically presents in infancy with refractory sideroblastic anemia, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and failure to thrive. Due to its heterogeneous manifestations and resemblance to other hematological conditions, early diagnosis remains a clinical challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A south asian male infant presented with persistent pancytopenia, severe anemia unresponsive to intravenous and oral iron and multivitamin supplements, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, failure to thrive, and metabolic acidosis. Born to consanguineous parents, the child had a significant family history of early infant deaths and hematological abnormalities. …

Nebraska And The Midwest Agtech Ecosystem: Benchmarking Innovation Investment And Translation Gaps, Ankit Chandra, Ishani Lal, Brennan Costello
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers
Agricultural innovation is central to the sustainable transformation of food systems, yet the capital that finances it is unevenly distributed relative to where food is produced. This paper develops a diagnostic framework for measuring this mismatch and applies it across the U.S. Midwest from 2021 to 2025, with particular emphasis on Nebraska's structural position within this landscape. Drawing on venture capital deal-flow data, 17 stakeholder interviews, and a novel strength-weakness-opportunity-gap (SWOG) ecosystem mapping methodology, we document $736 million in tracked Midwest AgTech funding across eight states (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota). We introduce three …
Reconciling Faith And Academic Identity: Evangelical Christian Identity And Ontological Confusion In Sport Studies, Sean Burke
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
This paper investigates the interplay of ontological confusion and Evangelical Christian identity within the context of qualitative sport studies research. Employing a reflexive autoethnographic method, I explore my personal experiences as an Evangelical Christian and as a social scientist who grapples with the complexities of paradigmatic confusion. Personal vignettes highlight the influence of sporting spaces and figures such as Tim Tebow and Kurt Warner in shaping my faith, identity, and framework for understanding reality. The analysis delves into the challenges posed by competing paradigmatic orientations, including positivism and social constructivism. These paradigms reveal the inherent difficulty of aligning scholarly inquiry …
Female Athletes With Differences Of Sex Development (Dsd): A Christian Perspective On Fairness And Compassion, Angela M. Robles
Female Athletes With Differences Of Sex Development (Dsd): A Christian Perspective On Fairness And Compassion, Angela M. Robles
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
One of the most significant controversies in elite women’s sport relates to the participation of female athletes with differences of sex development (DSD), as demonstrated by recent Olympic debates surrounding athletes like Imane Khelif and Caster Semenya. Today, a complex challenge continues to evolve at the intersection of DSD and competitive sports, and it requires careful consideration. The central argument of this paper is that DSD athletes are worthy of compassionate treatment grounded in their inherent dignity, and is founded on the understanding of what it means for humans to be created in the image of God (imago Dei). The …

The Virtue Of Hope In Sports Through Spe Salvi And Its Role In Faith, Resilience, And Character Formation In Student-Athletes, Hansson G. Labisig, Arvin D. Eballo
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Pope Benedict XVI, in Spe Salvi, presents hope as a transformative and redemptive virtue that enables believers to live and suffer differently, rooted in faith in God. He writes, “The one who has hope lives differently.” This study develops a theological-pastoral framework for integrating the virtue of hope into the faith formation of student-athletes within Catholic educational institutions, positioning sport as a genuine locus theologicus for Religious Education and evangelization. Employing the See–Judge–Act methodology, it draws from Spe Salvi, Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae, and the Vatican document Giving the Best of Yourself, in dialogue with C. R. Snyder’s psychological theory …
Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan
Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan
Michigan Journal of International Law
As the climate crisis intensifies, advocates worldwide have stood up to defend their communities, territories, and environment. In response, they have faced violent retaliation. This repression persists despite evolving international, regional, and national-level legal frameworks around the “right to defend rights” and the “right to protection.” This article begins by providing a comprehensive overview of this evolving legal landscape. Against this backdrop, the article examines the tactics and architectures of violence used to repress land and environmental defenders through the lens of counterinsurgency theory.
The article proposes a typology of counterinsurgent violence including: surveillance; stigmatization; criminalization; arbitrary detention; infiltration; cooptation; …
Institutionalizing The Trade-Labor Nexus, Yueming Yan
Institutionalizing The Trade-Labor Nexus, Yueming Yan
Michigan Journal of International Law
While scholars have extensively explored the evolution of labor provisions in trade agreements, less attention has been paid to the institutional mechanisms that operationalize these provisions. This article addresses this gap by offering a comparative analysis of labor compliance models that are emerging across jurisdictions.
Recognizing that no institutional design is without trade-offs, this article applies the theory of comparative institutional analysis to evaluate existing models—not by asking whether they are (in)effective in the abstract, but: (in)effective compared to what? Specifically, it examines the strengths and limitations of various institutional mechanisms using benchmarks that matter to policymakers, including procedural efficiency, …
Active Limited Partners Flunk Functional Test, Karen Burke
Active Limited Partners Flunk Functional Test, Karen Burke
UF Law Faculty Publications
In 1977, Congress enacted section 1402(a)(13), which exempts limited partners "as such" from self-employment tax on their share of partnership income. A half century later, active investment management professionals have claimed limited partner status to avoid self-employment tax on investment management fees, seemingly standing this anti-abuse rule on its head. While the Treasury twice issued proposed regulations to clarify and modernize the definition of a limited partner, these attempts encountered a firestorm of protest. The Tax Court's controversial Soroban decision rejected claims that state-law limited partners are automatically exempt from self-employment tax, holding that a functional analysis is required to …
Developing And Sustaining Indigenous Nursing Leadership: The Heal Southwest Leadership Cohort, Cristina Rivera Carpenter, Adriann Begay
Developing And Sustaining Indigenous Nursing Leadership: The Heal Southwest Leadership Cohort, Cristina Rivera Carpenter, Adriann Begay
Indigenous Health Posters and Presentations
While Indigenous Peoples represent 2.9% of the total United States (US) population (Office of Minority Health, 2025), only 0.4% of the 4.7 million Registered Nurses (RN) in the US are Indigenous (AACN, 2024). This disparity in nursing representation impacts healthcare delivery and access in Indigenous communities. Healthcare services in Indigenous communities, such as those provided through Indian Health Services (IHS) and 638 facilities, often face high vacancies and high turnover rates (Kruse 2022). There are gaps in mentorship, professional development, community of practice, and available curriculum to practicing Indigenous Nurses who serve their communities. These gaps must be addressed to …

The Roles Of Shame In Ex-Christians' Personal Experiences And Deconversion Journeys, Anaya Bruno
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
Although the benefits of religion on individuals’ mental wellbeing have been well-studied, research exploring aspects of religion that may prove harmful to mental wellbeing is limited. This study explores the roles of shame in the experiences of ex-Christians that led to their deconversion. The study’s results have implications for understanding the experiences of religious trauma, considering that chronic shame has been linked to the development of trauma. Respondents, recruited via Reddit, answered survey questions about the ways in which they perceived shame to influence their religious experiences, personal experiences, and religious deconversion. Inductive thematic analysis was utilized to derive themes …
Man, Cut The Crop: Effects Of Cropectomies On Survival And Behavior In Drosophila Melanogaster, Emily Peraza
Man, Cut The Crop: Effects Of Cropectomies On Survival And Behavior In Drosophila Melanogaster, Emily Peraza
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
The gut-brain axis mediates communication between the digestive and nervous systems to regulate physiology and behavior. Its dysfunction profoundly impacts human health and causes disease. Region-specific hormones and neurotransmitters in the digestive system respond to several processes to signal the brain, but the mechanisms of gut-brain signaling are not fully defined. Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful model for studying gut biology by showing remarkable similarity to mammalian digestive systems, as both regulate energy by distributing nutrients. We refined a minimally invasive surgical protocol to remove the crop from adult flies. We then utilized the Activity Recording CAFE (ARC) and Drosophila …

The first hypothesis proposed that women would be more skeptical than men about AI's use in news, citing greater concerns …
Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow
Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Collaboration between medical and behavioral health providers has been growing consistently through the years. Offering behavioral health services in a medical setting helps individuals who may not otherwise seek mental health care. Much of the available literature focuses on patient characteristics in referral patterns; however, current evidence does not provide much guidance for medical providers to improve their collaboration with behavioral health providers. The present study assessed referral patterns of medical providers serving patients with different presenting problems and with patients who have received prior prescriptions of psychotropic medications. Medical providers were randomly assigned to view four 1-min videos of …
