Purpose: Building Automation System (BAS) presents encouraging opportunities to optimise energy consumption while elevating occupants’ thermal comfort. BAS ranges from regular thermostatic valves to home automation systems (HAS), in residential buildings. Well-designed HAS advantage in occupant spaces, providing optimum occupant comfort and energy efficiency. However, not accompanying essential parameters such as real-time climate conditions and occupancy thermal behaviour prevent real-time responsive HAS developments. Existing studies demonstrate an elevated need for efficient HAS, which can potentially consider these significant influencing factors with real-time responses. A developed approach that considers these dynamic changes provides an accurate HAS that addresses the current performance …

Analysis Of Three Decades Of Research In Road And Highway Work Zones Using Bibliometric Methods, Patrick X.W. Zou, Wenxiu Guo
CIB Conferences
Research in road and highway work zones has been continuously increasing since it is critical for maintaining traffic efficiency, reducing accident risks and minimising environmental impact during road maintenance, repair or upgrade. Road and highway work zones significantly impact safety due to traffic flow disruption, layout change and construction activities, which increase the likelihood of collisions, injuries and workers’ exposure to dangers. Despite the growing body of research, there is a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis that examines the historical, current and future trajectories of work zone research. This study analyzes 892 publications from 1990 to 2024, sourced from the …

A Systematic Review Of Drivers And Barriers To The Assimilation Of Net-Zero Carbon Emission Requirements Into Construction Megaprojects Procurement, Andrew Anafo, Robert Osei-Kyei, Vivian Wy Tam
CIB Conferences
There is no gainsaying that climate change is globally recognised as the greatest environmental threat of the 21st century. Therefore, under the Parish Agreement to restraint greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission to net-zero by 2050, climate change mitigation is at the core of environmental schemes of governments worldwide. Bearing in mind that mega construction projects contribute to the rising level of GHGs in the atmosphere, and the seldom consideration of net-zero carbon requirements in the procurement of construction megaprojects, this paper examines the drivers and barriers to assimilating net-zero requirements into construction megaprojects procurement. When net-zero emission requirements are well-thought-out …

The physical condition of motorways and trunk roads in Scotland is monitored by specialist contractors on behalf of Transport Scotland by annual condition survey to provide information about the structural, surface and safety condition of the road surface or pavements. Flexible asphalt pavement is subjected to continuous vehicular and environmental loading causing potholes that needs to be reinstated to maintain functional requirements. However, traditional pothole repair materials have sustainability concerns and can deteriorate quickly after installation. The longevity and durability of pothole repairs is important as repeat treatments incite additional costs. Innovation can enhance sustainable development and for road transport …

Measuring Success Of Transport Infrastructure Projects, Muhammad Umair Khan, Yingbin Feng, Swapan Saha, Peng Zhang
CIB Conferences
Transport infrastructure projects have traditionally been evaluated using financial performance metrics and adherence to project schedules; however, recent research emphasizes the importance of adopting a multidimensional framework that incorporates economic, social, environmental, and technological considerations. Success in such projects now demands balancing value-for-money, return on investment (ROI), and long-term financial sustainability with broader societal objectives such as accessibility, equity, and inclusivity. Environmental sustainability, including reducing carbon footprints, enhancing resource efficiency, and promoting sustainable practices, has become a critical determinant of project outcomes. Additionally, technical performance indicators, such as reliability, safety, service quality, and user satisfaction, provide essential insights into operational …

CIB Conferences
Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is an essential tool to gather data from occupants regarding their dwelling conditions to inform retrofit decisions or improve future performance. With the growing importance of green building (GB) as a potent mechanism to address sustainability challenges within the construction industry, research on POE-in-GB is critical. However, there has been little effort to provide researchers with a systematic and bibliometric analysis of the state-of-the-art of the POE-in-GB field. To address this gap, this study uses bibliometric-systematic analysis to conduct a state-of-the-art review of POE-in-GB. A dataset comprising 183 publications from 1999-2023 was collected from the Scopus and …

Preliminary Proposal For A Knowledge Management System In A Brazilian Construction Company, Based On Iso 30401 Requirements, Juan F De V Otoya, Silvio B. Melhado
CIB Conferences
Knowledge management (KM) has established itself into a discipline for the past decades, progressively being incorporated into international standards such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standard 9001, in 2015 and well-established guides, such as the PMBOK, in 2017, becoming an International Standard in 2018, ISO 30401, which sets the requirements for Knowledge Management Systems (KMS). Although there is substantial literature on the use and application of KM tools and techniques in the construction industry, proposals for KMS are scarce, and, specifically aligned to the ISO 30401 requirements, inexistent. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to tackle this …

Teleoperation is receiving intense attention due to its potential to address health and safety concerns for construction workers caused by on-site hazards. It allows operators to control robots from a distance outside their field of view using wireless communication technologies. Currently one of the most frequently deployed robotic technologies in construction is the remotely operated demolition robot within the field of view. While distance teleoperation offers great potential for enhancing worker safety and addressing labor shortages, the complex and dynamic demolition sites present unique challenges. This paper introduces the preliminary results of a study that explored potential challenges in demolition …
